Musically, DT are exceedingly talented, but James' vocals are horrible these days. And this new musical direction is irritating. Train of Thought was the beginning of this era. I seriously hope they revert back to something actually melodic instead of another album of heavy metal wankery.
With the latest set from Dream Theater Chaos In Motion 2007-2008 the band gives their fans the ultimate gift by putting two DVDs and three CDs together for the most comprehensive overview of their music to date in a live setting. I grabbed this gem the day it came out and later discovered the concert date I attended in Boston in 2007 makes a few appearances on the set, which makes this experience all that more personal and special for this listener. I was able to attend another concert early in 2008 and bring along my young son, a Petrucci disciple, and he thought seeing DT live was the most amazing thing he has ever seen. Thanks to the graciousness of Jordan Rudess and making these dreams come true, I continue to enjoy watching the development and legacy of DT grow with each passing year. Chaos In Motion 2007-2008 is a lot to digest and after you are finished watching all the live footage, interviews and bonuses, then heard all three CDs, you certainly have the feeling you were just given the grand tour and history of a band. DT is at the point where a presentation such as this will be more commonplace because of their hard earned and well-deserved success. I recently spoke to their former manager Jim Putulski, and as we were discussing Jim’s latest new label Blistering Records, the mention of the work ethic of DT came up and he intimated that if more bands held that belief closer to their heart that success would be unavoidable. At the beginning of the first DVD, there are some questionable videos in reference to quality however, that is something that is more of an anomaly. Once you get past those rare instances, this is superb and it covers much of the output from this band. As the back of the box set says, “1 year & 1 day, 115 shows, 105 cities, 35 countries, 5 continents, hundreds of thousands of fans…1 Band” puts this entire event into proper perspective. The enormity of presence that DT commands finds a time capsule to fit into within this one sentence. The promo videos and live screen projection films are also a highlight and very enjoyable. With “Behind The Chaos On The Road” segments, Mike Portnoy’s tour of the stage prior to a show is an entirely different look from the band’s eyes that we rarely get to see. As I mentioned previously, this set is all encompassing and I do not think very much is missing. The total DT experience is available here, including life on the road and all the people that make things happen along the way from the bus driver to the cooks, people that seldom get the recognition they deserve. This band is proud of its legacy and is always willing to give credit where it is due and that is why I respect them so much. Success has not changed their outlook, just made all of them more grateful for the current position they hold in music today. It is hard to imagine how a DVD/CD box set could get much better than this although I have a feeling what is in the future will be yet another notch higher than this. DT is always looking to improve and this is a great way to see how this band has grown in every way by watching the DVDs. If you want to compare, contrast, and see how just how far they have come over the years, check out the double feature DVD Images and Words Live in Tokyo/5 Years in a Livetime, proceed to check out Chaos In Motion 2007-2008, and then watch the amazing progression of a band in one sitting. At the end of each track, my iPod shuts down and reboots.
Uneven feel throughout. It's like getting lost in a maze. What's with James's hair ,yikes. Rogaine time.
Sorry. I'm a DT fan. But, I can't just give this high marks because the musicians are stellar. Based on other Live DT- this is bad. Ruined by James shot vocals. I got this because Surrounded was supposed to be a must have because of JPs great extended solos. Forget it- I can't stomache the high pitched mumblesof James. I really think JL forgot the lyrics and just screeched the melody from the mid to the end on Surrounded- killed what could of been a highlight. Lines in the Sand is great and made it to the playlist. Panic, In the presence & Schmedley pretty good as well. But nothing near as great as Score or Live Scenes. Get those instead. Real shame that one players craft can overshadow an otherwise awesome collection of musicianship. I almost wish they would pull a KISS trick and go back and overdub some vocals so the rest wouldn't go to waste. Sorry James ...
Dream Theater has done it again! I thought SCORE was a huge hit, but now chaos in motion is out. I was waiting so Long for this. I loved systematic chaos, and they added some awesome songs to Chaos In Motion. This new Schmedley Wilcox sounds great too. This is just so great. Dream theater really out did themselves this time. I am so excited i am going to cry. Just kidding, but seriously, if you do not by this, you are not a true fan.
This series of live cuts is fantastic. LaBrie's voice warbles in places, but if you can stand his voice on the studio recordings, you won't mind this. The centerpiece is Surrounded, which contains an extended guitar solo by Petrucci that is simply incredible. He includes the solos from Mother by Pink Floyd and Sugar Mice by Marillion, and LaBrie even sings part of it.
I saw them twice during this last concert series. Both times they were incredible! This is a wonderful recording that captures much of the color that Dream Theater brings to live performance. But you must see a show to truly appreciate what these musicians can do! This live recording includes some of their most challenging works, and they pull it off with no mistakes. The immensity of In the Presence of Enemies is worth the purchase alone. Not only do they showcase their new work in this Tour series, Dream Theater also brought back old classics like "Scarred" "Surrounded" "Lines in the Sand" and "Take the Time", this is a wonderful album!!!
Everything on the tour is simply amazing. But the vocals nearly kill it. For a good half of the tour, he sounds like a dying horse. Too high when his throat is bad.
This is truly a tour de force DVD and CD release. As a side note, Dream Theater has exceeded my expectations in each and every performance they have ever had up to this point. This commercial release of their Chaos In Motion world tour is a step up from the previous Score DVD and shows that they will continue to move up in the music industry. I suggest you purchase this incredible series of live performances by the greatest ensemble on the planet!!!!
I do agree that James' vocals are starting to escape him, but also figure that some of you are possibly comparing to his studio albums. You figure that sometimes the artists will "cheat" on studio albums to cover up those little imperfections. Live is another story. It's one take, and that's it. You can't fix that. Also, look at Forsaken. Does that not sound EXACTLY like it does on the video? I do agree that this is not exactly perfect, nor should it be marked as such. Figure also that these guys are going on 20+ yrs. of being a band. That definetly takes a toll on certain people; this may be a sign of James LaBrie's vocals maturing. Who knows? Maybe James' was just having a bad day. And everyone has one at some point, right guys? Wait for the next album. You'll all see, things will definetly be different. P.S. 80% of the album's tracks are album only because they are really long. This CD, however, shouldn't cost $16.00. Hey, I'll buy it anyway.
Constant motion and panic attack, 2 non-stop rock songs, perfect opener. next blind faith, love it. Then some good songs fr a while. Then, The ministry of lost souls, mastered well, along with In the presence of enemies, an amazing epic song. And schmedly wilcox, like the instrumedly, but with lyrical songs, And every song ended an album. This was an amazing medley, It openswith Trial of tears (end of falling into infinity) with an overture extended by about 5 minutes, which made it a 7minute overture. Then finally free, which ended metropolis pt 2. After that is an instrumental version of a segment in learning to live, which ended Images and words. Then, if possible, an even harder version of a segment of in the name of god, which ended Train of thought. Then what ended the massive 24:00 octavarium and the album octavarium, ended the 21:18 epic medly, which was Razor's Edge.
The album itself is on par with other DT albums. James LaBrie is still the weak link in this group live. The reason that I gave it only two stars is simple. Like others, I am having problems playing this album on my iPod. It plays the first track fine, and then goes into reboot after almost every other track. I have been unable to listen to this album in its entirety. My frustration is unending on this one. iTunes: Help us out and get this fixed!
As usual, just spectacular! The intro mix was a nice way to begin this album as well as the show.
I had the pleasure of seeing DT on this tour with Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, and Three. I was amazed with the show and amazed with this album. Live albums are usually dissapointing but DT add elements to their live show that are not captured in the studio. Essential for long time fans or a good place to start for newcomers.
YES! ITS OUT! thank god DT came out with another live dvd, it was well-needed!!! This is a dvd that focuses on the new, while bringing back the old. for example the song surrounded, which hasnt really been on a live cd/dvd since Live At The Marquee, so its great to hear a newer version of that song. Same thing with Take The Time, which i have never heard a live version of. Lines In The Sand and Scarred are two more songs taht really haven't been featured live, but are amazing songs. Blind Faith is one of the big songs i have been looking forward to hearing live, and would you look at that, its right there! Then you have Panic Attack which bound to be a hit since its on Rock Band 2 and its just an incredible feat, and all the new stuff from Systematic Chaos. Overall, very nice job Dream Theater, you never disappoint me!
Chaos in Motion is definitely worth purchasing. But be forwarned, the sound quality, unfortunately, is probably right on par with Once In A Livetime. The only reason I couldn't bring myself to give this release a 5 out of 5. However, the "setlist" for this particular release is spot on. Check out "Surrounded" and be amazed at JP's improvisation of his own classic solo, and the JP/JR unison just before JL comes right back in with his soaring vocals. Not to mention the awesome JP solo at the end of Surrounded. DT's version of Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathusa" aka the 2001: A Space Odyessy theme song is a really nice opening touch (I missed the last tour so this was completely new to me). Schmedley Wilcox has a very nice flow between the different DT masterpieces represented throughout the last ten years. VERY COOL! And SCARRED!! They finally played it in its entirety, not to mention flawlessly! Again, sonic letdowns aside, this is a must have for all DT diehards! Better yet, buy the 5 disc (3 CD, 2 DVD) box set. It'll be worth your time.
not the best live album, but not bad. Also, why is 80 percent of the album "album only". iTunes is so cheap.
I've had playback problems as well. The ipod restarts after ending certain tracks, and it won't even play the Medley track.
Has anyone else had problems playing the tunes. I purchased the album. and almost after playing every track, my Ipod wants to go to start up mode again. Then on tracks like surrounded and Scarred, the track would play for a few seconds then just end, and the ipod would start up again. my 360 won't even recognice the album when syncing it with the ipod. If you had this problem and/or have any suggestions. Please post them on here. thank you.
You'd probably need to shut down and reboot if you were asked to play any DT song too =p
I was all happy when DT came out with Chaos In Motion. Now don't get me wrong, I liked all the songs. When I listened to In The Presence Of Enemies, since that is my FAVORITE DT song, I was highly dissatisfied with James's vocals. I DID NOT LIKE HIS VOICE WHEN HE SANG THIS SONG!!!!!!!! When he sang ITPOE on Systematic Chaos I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!! HIS VOICE WAS LIKE HE WAS FROM HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!!! But as soon as he sang, my eyes literally melted from my sockets!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been a DT fan since they formed back in the mid 80's. I own every album, and this live set is a great addition to my collection. These guys are top notch musicians, often thought of as a musicians band because of the difficulty in trying to comprehend the arrangements these guys come up with. They manage to be cutting edge without being redundant. Since they took over their own production and engineering, the music has gotten better, more involved, and more personal. These guys are incredible! If you haven't heard them before, be prepared to listen to outrageously progressive music with balls and chunk like no other band can deliver!
Finally, a show that outdoes Score! Yeah, it was a good show, but I though it could've been way better. With this show, you get that and so much more. Great SC songs like Constant Motion, The Dark Eternal Night, The Ministry Of Lost Souls, Forsaken and the entire In The Presence Of Enemies suite, not to mention Blind Faith, a Surrounded with a jam session, Lines In The Sand, Scarred, Take The Time, and of course, the Schmedley Wilcox, which is just a medley of Trial Of Tears, Finally Free, Learning To Live, In The Name Of God and The Razor's Edge from Octavarium. Ok, I said a lot, mainly just the entire setlist, but these are all great songs! Get them! Get them now!
I'll say from the beginnin DT has some of the best music out there. However with so many live releases I would think they would like to not re-hash themselves. I'm looking for songs played live on these releases I've not heard a decent live recording of. For example...The Glass Prison, 6AM etc... I'd really like to hear some new stuff played live rather than re-hashing songs like "Take the Time", "Surrounded", "Lines in the Sand", "Scarred". All of these songs have had decent live recordings. Thats 1/3 the album thats re-hashed and the rest of it is new.
As their last DVD release SCORE proved definitively when it outsold Pink Floyd's PULSE, Dream Theater is truly a group to be reckoned with despite its removal from the mainstream of today's music scene. With this latest live album, Chaos in Motion, and the accompanying DVD set, these gods of progressive rock do it again, presenting the musical tour de force that fans have come to expect from a band known for its flawless execution both in the studio and onstage. Diehard fans will be pleased by this album's selection of new and old favorites, and technically-minded aspiring musicians will wet themselves out of sheer exhuberance as these titans of their instruments blaze through seemingly impossible flurries of notes and play in the most obscure of time signatures without missing a beat. In the end, while some may dismiss Dream Theater's songs, with their extended instrumental breaks and at times Hollywood-esque orchestral themes, as overwrought shred-fests that bring to mind terms like "hedonism" and "musical opulence," most musicians (fans or not) will take a step back and enjoy the band for--if nothing else--its immensely impressive technical virtuosity. With Chaos in Motion, Dream Theater yet again demonstrates, with the enviable apparent ease for which they have become so famous, just that: virtuosity.
Buy this album if you like music.
The band is great as usual. However, the sound quality palls in comparison to their other shows. LaBrie's voice is shot and not worth listening too anymore. He actually made my ears bleed.
This is a live album of a diffrent color, surley. It is not one show but a collection of what I can assume are some of the best runs of these tracks from the Chaos in Motion tour. I am particulary glad to see "Lines in the Sand" represented on this release, featuring some of Petrucci's best guitar work. I am also really enjoying the live versions of material from "Systematic Chaos" mainly with the full and un-seperated run of "In the Presence of Enemies"....simply epic. Dream Theater also manages to deliver to both of their audiences with this live release, giving a good selection of songs that will satisfy both the Metal and Progressive audiences, just as was the case with "Score" and "Live from Budokan"...........I cannot give this release anything less than a 5 star. P.S make sure to pick up the DVD as well, LaBries moustache he sported for this tour is quite humorous (LOL). But the presentation of the DVD is definatly worth a view as much as the Music is worth a listen.

Again DT deliver the goods live but it has to be said that it's easy to lose track of if you are listening to a live album or the studio album given the quality of the sound and the faithful (astounding) reproduction of the tracks. Schmedley Wilcox does not hang together as well as some other DT medleys (e.g. Budokan) but the album is worth buying if only for Petrucci's humble homage to some greats (Lifeson, Satriani, Gilmour, amongst others) which he is blatant in weaving into the set and most obviously, his solo on Surrounded: to a Marillion backdrop, he plays tribute to Satriani (Always With Me, Always With You) before climaxing with the solo from Mother (Pink Floyd). Awesome.
Well what an i say? 20 years on, Dream Theater still know how to rock. The music quality is simply amazing. and watching the crew set it all up, just proves how hard it is to do. And for £17.99 for the deluxe edition with 3 hours of extra footage, is a total bargain.. Check out: In the presence of enemies, the ministry of lost souls and schmedly Wilcox.. 10/10!
