this is the greatest r&b, soul album in the UNIVERSE!!! after you hear this cd, you can't listen to usher, chris brown, or neyo again. i can't believe that i'm only the second person to rate this masterpiece. just goes to show how people don't appreciate good music anymore.

My favorite song is move on up!

Genius....Pure Genius.

I had forgotten just how much I adore early 70's Funk and Soul. And then, there as the theme song for The Duece, is the Curtis Mayfield Masterpiece. This album is great, and he is a great songwriter that cptures the feel of the early 70s. If you can watch the opening creidts for The Duece, you will see one of the greatest music videos ever put together. Move on up was a great single, Down Below captures the ghetto in all its rawness. The only thing that compares to that song is The Message by Grandmaster Flash, and that is a distant second.

As a middleclass white guy, I may not be behind Curtis' politics 100%; but man his music transends time; his singing; playing--songwriting--sounds as good now as in 1970- furthermore, -Curtis took one for the team, when he had his terrible accident--and I, for one, goes very few days not thinking about him, and the joyous music he left behind--hope there is no Hell below Curtis--you deserve to be up there---

One of the greatest song writer

By the late 60's, Curtis Mayfield's singer-songwriter talents were steadily increasing beyond that of The Impressions. When 'Curtis' was finally released, he took Northern/Chicago Soul to another level of funk-infested, orchestral soul with a brotherly message. There's plenty to take in, whether it's the empowering "Move On Up" or the dark album-opener "(Don't Worry) If There's A Hell Below". Buy this album for "Move On Up"; Dig a little deeper for "The Makings Of You", "We People Who Are Darker Than Blue", and a personal favorite - "Miss Black America".

Im 35 and like to think of myself as a music enthusiast... How in the heck I never heard CURTIS MAYFIELD is beyond me... I take that back.... I hear Curtis Mayfield everywhere. Who has not been influenced by this man in the rap community. Its like I was lost and now I am found. I love the trully multicultural beat with that obvious 70's feel makes me remember why it good to be alive.

This feels like Curtis Mayfield has never left us! This music is the essence of genuis! Love you MAN!!

Curtis is one of the few musicians who is so gifted that he makes you want to learn how to make music yourself. I am lucky enough to have been exposed to his music at a young age. If the lyrics dont move you the music will.... brilliant.

I was 18 when this album was released, I can remember playing it over and over again. This is probably one of the best social commentary albums that have come out, it has a way of hitting you hard and yet healing you at the same time. Cutis Mayfield appeals to the highest angels in us and every song is fused in measured tones. This is a great classic album for anyone to have in their library.

All of his stuff is smoking hot. This is of course seminal because it was is first solo effort and introduced him to a huge audience.

The meaning of soul..

Before this, I was mostly only aware of Curtis Mayfield's work with The Impressions and the Staple Singers, along with the SUPERFLY soundtrrack. Songs like "Other Side of Town" show that the man was so much deeper than that. No wonder rappers sample the hell out of his tracks. I read about Barry White's music described once as "champagne flowing down ghetto streets." The same could be said for Curtis's music...except he never for a moment lets you forget where you are...

I love today's music--well, most of the time. Whenever it's not too explicit. But Curtis Mayfield has introduced a whole new world of music to me; I can't believe I've been missing out on it so long. Move On Up is such an inspiring song. My aunt has breast cancer and this song always makes her smile. Thank you very much, Mr. Mayfield.

Powerful music

M + A is right, no appreciation. This is back in the day when soul music had that power. Aritist could sing, Musicians could play, and people did more than remake music ala Mariah Carey, Blige and them. Wack. People will never really know soul power. Its a shame what the modern day R&B artist has done to there own music. No originality, just money. Modern R&B deserves itself.

I was a skinny white boy from Chicago stationed in Long Binh, South Viet Nam in 1971-2. I would come back to the hooch after work and put on my Sansui headphones and crank that opening bass line of just THE best soul/RB cut of all time, "If there is hell below . . . ", . . . and I knew that the man understood: "We're all gonna go!." That song was a cold slap in the face at a time when the world needed it. Read some "Autobiography of Malcolm X," turn off rap/hip hop, listen to this album, and get in touch with a man-sized view of the world.

Just remember, you can't think of Curtis Mayfield without thinking of WAWA.

"Be Thankful for What You Got" (the actual name of the song with the lyrics "diamond in the back") was performed by William DeVaughn and often confused as having been recorded by Curtis Mayfield (although it was influenced by Mayfield).

Curtis Mayfield for all you have shared with the earth. miss your sounds.

For me, this album has infinite replay ability. Politically conscious lyrics matched with beautiful and lush backing tracks just makes for an incredible experience. Highly Reccomend!

How did I never hear about him before?? First time I heard him was not too long ago on a kanye track when he was sampled, but this is amazing!
