It is amazing that all of those reviews were about Beyonce instead of the beauty of the music. The music was wonderful. No Beyonce is not Etta James, but neither is Jennifer Husdon. Beyonce helped produce Cadillac Records so it makes since for her to play that role. What I don't understand is why someone would recommend Jennifer Hudson to play that role. Yes she can sing but she looks nothing like Etta James. Beyonce is a closer match than Jennifer Hudson. Oh by the way, before this movie, had any one of you heard of any of these people or had ya'll heard any other song from Etta James other than At Last?
Beyonce truely sets herself apart from other performers with this effort. Her range of voice and style of singing brings new life into these wonderful songs. This is a must have if you love great music.
Beyonce sings from her toes up .... she has an incredible voice. At Last is one of my favorite songs and no one sings it better!

While Beyonce is no Etta James, she brought this song back from the dead. Honestly, I never even heard the song until I heard Beyonce sing it. Afterwards, I looked up the song with Ms. James singing and it was just as beautiful, if not more, but that doesn't mean you should trash Beyonce, when all she was doing was her best. It doesn't matter that it doesn't sound as good. In fact, people should admire her for even daring to attempt following in the same footsteps as our beloved Ms. James.
I have to disagree with the reviews I've read. I think Beyonce did a wonderful job on this and put her own feelings into the music.As did the other artists.

At Last, Finally someone, not Etta, has made this their own! Sung with heart and soul!! It evokes an image of Mr and Mrs Obamas' historical first dance and a new beginning. I will, forever, associate this song with a better time and a fresh new take on an old standard!!! Way to go Beyonce!!!
Beyonce did way better than Etta James....she brought more life to the song. My opinion is that the original version was very dull and boring.
Beyoncé did a flawless job as Etta! She brings so much raw emotion to Etta. Beyoncé's voice is pure heaven.
I thought their interpretation of the originals were outstanding. The point was NOT to simply copy the original artist(s), but to give their own rendition of it. & I for one, thought the actors did an amazing job. I'll definitely be adding "Cadillac Records" to my top favorite movie list.
I loved this movie and the music. I did not know this story all though I am sure most others did. What a great way to share this great and important part of music history to us who don't. I saw all the bad reviews of Beyonce, but I have to say that I did not know the songs "Trust In Me" or " I'd Rather Go Blind" and even though I agree this is not Etta it is not the point. I now know these GREAT songs by one of the BEST female singers ever (Etta) because of Beyonce. I am impressed with Beyonce's acting skills and I think her voice is strong on these songs. I wish she would sing great songs like this more often. Thumps UP from me!
i'll admit, i had my doubts when i learned beyonce was doing the famous Etta James ballad but i was pleasantly suprised. i think beyonce did a very good job with what she had to work with. obviously she's no Etta James and i don't think she was trying to be. as a hip hop diva, she did amazing with her version of this classic.
Beyonce emotes these amazing covers and does Etta justice. She truly solidifies herself as a legendary singer with these classic songs!! GO B

I agree with the entry below. It's not like Beyonce ripped off Etta James. She was playing the role of Etta James. Obviously she will not be able to sing the songs with the same flare as the original artist. However, those tracks definately do not qualify in the terrible catagory. So stop trying to hate on everything and appreciate each artist as they are. Or better yet just don't download it and carry on.
I totally disagree with the negative reviews. Beyonce was great playing Etta James. Did not care for her singing in Dream Girls. She was fantastic singing and portraying Etta. I was brought to tears when I heard her sing I Would Rather Go Blind. Watch the movie Cadillac Records, you won't be sorry. The cast and music are fantastic!!! You will learn some interesting history about the music industry while being totally entertained. I had to buy the CD after I saw the movie. My husband agrees, Beyonce does a great job singing and acting in this part. I Love, Love, Love it. I looked for a book, there wasn't one. I found a book written by Etta James. I then watched the movie and listened to the CD again and again. Glad I own all three.
Well stated Maestro, But I gotta admit, although Beyonce's voice has a certain southern earthiness, she lacks the throatiness, grit, and soul that comes from having lived the very experience. Think of Aretha singing "Natural Woman" or Billie Holliday singing "Good Morning Heartache". Beyonce's renditions sound contrived and forced, and ring eerily similar to "Listen". Mos Def, a brilliant actor and hip hop artist, just isn't selling me on the Chuck Berry stuff, I give him props for his effort, but it lands a little short and flat, for my tastes. Jeffery Wright is surprisingly credible in his turn, as is the truly talented Solange Knowles. All in all, the album seems to be an uneven hodge-podge of styles and genres that just doesn't connect. And don't even get me started about the Elvis thing...the ultimate white guy wanna be black (at least on wax) I mean, really? zo
There are alot of people that are knocking Beyonce for her portrayal of Etta James. Those of you doing so are missing the point, the movie wasn't made to compare Etta to Beyonce, it was to portray the musical discovery of Etta James and all the other artist that were part of the Cadillac records family, besides most artist have another artist's musical style that they admire.
I'm disappointed that they have the length of the song SHORTER then in the movie. Lame. Great movie though.

I like this disc, it's good but not all their songs just some of them. My favorite song of the disc is At Last of Beyonce i really like that song. Beyonce has a great voice and I think her voice performance in the movie is really good!!!:))
I thought Beyonce did a wonderful job with these songs. I bought every single one of them. She isn't Etta James, and she doesn't have to be. She is Beyonce. Her voice is lovely and skillful, and she deserves credit for tackling such a daunting challenge.
Guess i'll have to try to right this ship. Seems some are unable to appreciate a great Soundtrack when thye hear one. Di'ing covers - my oh my folks... Musicians have been covering the classics since the begining of song! & for my money - these covers are incredible! The soundtrack has inspired my desire to see "Cadillac Records" - the movie. But - hey - if you ain't into a great soundtrack because your moral standards prevent your mind from going there... Stick to your principles. But - as i've said too many times before - what the heck are you doing trashing this wonderful CD in a review? Just doesn't make much sense... But such is life - i guess. Thanks Beyonce & the rest of the Cadillac Records cast & crew - This is a wonderful collection of great Blues/R&B tracks. I'm sure the folks who brought these songs to us (many years ago) are smiling @ your efforts. Love them & Love U2 - But Most of All - Love this CD! SWEETNESS to My EARS!
The songs and the way that things happened in the movie made for the understanding of what was going on and how things happened by then.
Who decided to cast Beyonce as Etta James? That is a blasphemy. Don't take me wrong I like some of Beyonce's songs but she just doesn't have it. She can't act either. Bad, Bad, Bad, choice. I hope they make another biopic about Mrs. James and they cast someone that can do her justice!!!!
Well, just in my thoughts, Beyonce yes, didn't really sang alot like her, but remember Diana Ross played Billie Holiday, put on a great performance, but didn't do justice at all...Although I really enjoyed Diana's Versions of the songs, same with Beyonce's, (History repeating itself, one of her Icons...playing a mock version of Diana (Dreamgirls), now the real Etta James (Cadillac Records), doing movies like Diana on other artist hmmm....)but Beyonce doing this movie actually made me go listen to Etta James, no offense to her, but I didn't really know much other than At Last, but now I'm more knowledgable of her and her great songs...some aren't as good as other versions though like other artists have done (songs I heard Etta Perform). Yes, I really believe that Queen Latifah would have been grand or Jennifer Hudson, whom I didn't think of until reading the reviews...Look at Queen, in Hairspray! With the blonde hair and all yep! For some reason, I think Hairspray creator/writer was thinking of Etta when he created that character, well, between her and Aretha, pay close attention :)!!! John Waters, check out the version too of Hairspray, with Ricki Lake, from 1988, that lady was great too! Well back to this, again, Beyonce did nice Job....I was surprised about Columbus Short, he really did a wonderful job in film and him singing I'm shocked! Why Nas on here? That made it a little too modern for me..surprised of him then they just threw baby sis Solange on here too (Like in those L'oreal Commercials with I Decided!) Oh My! I like songs but my goodness!

Okay people they are called covers meaning people remade the songs.They may not be good as the original because nothing ever really is but these were fabulous covers.And i understand that Ms.Etta James felt disrespected for B singing her song at the inaguration but i'm pretty sure she didn't think it would bug her.Its not her fault they wanted her maybe she should of thought about it first but she sang it deal with it.She is not trying to be her she's doing the job they asked her to do same as all the other actors and that's act and try their hardest to potray these amazing people and i think they did a damn good job.
I do so love when Beyonce does old school. Lately her new stuff just seems to get trashier and trashier... which is sad, because I'm really quite a fan of her's. This album's pretty nice. Worth checking out.

As a younger person listening to the songs sung by Beyonce, I think she did a great job in this role. It made me interested in more of Etta's songs.
Everyone says negative things like their music professors or historians of music. You missed the purpose of this movie. It's a history of the beginning of the music we all listen to today. The stars who portrayed those musicians did a fine job. There's nobody else out there, that could've done it better. The album is fantastic, the movie is fabulous. My hat's off to Mr. Chess who did what no man had the balls to do in that era.

Beyonce' did excellent on this album! obviously she will not, be Etta James but thats not what matters, no one will be Etta James! Beyonces voice is so powerful and so beautiful and i dont think they could have picked a better singer/ actress to portray that lady in this movie! Beyonce sang each and every one of those amazingly, each brought me to tears because she put so much emotion into them! Some people only know how to complain...

Beyonce will all do respect, you don't have chops to do Etta. Etta is an Icon. I think is a disrespect to not have the real Etta singing her songs. I know Beyonce is not comparing herself to Etta but I truly believed that out of respect to the original artists, the Soundtrack should have them singing their song and a cheap imitation.
Everybody keeps harping on Beyonce and thats why they give this one star but she only has 3 songs in the whole album. Even if you don't like Beyonce there is a lot of music in hear that is worth listening to. Furthermore, this notion that our music and the pasts music is not intertwined is completely stupid. Hip-Hop, Rock, and many other genres of music were born from this music so to say that Mos Def or any other of these guys is out of place for doing this is being short sighted. Plus Mos Def is a great actor and a great musician who is not like those other mainstream rappers that are just a waste of time to listen to.
I read one review that really changed my thinking, and I now give this review: I do not think Beyonce sounds like Etta James, or even looks like her. But I know that THAT is not the point, so I give this a 3. I love her interpratation of At Last, and, even though it was very different from the original, I recognized and fell in love with the song at once. She's not really Etta, but I give her this: she gave it an awesome twist.

Wow. I didnt expect everyone to be so harsh on Beyonce for her version of "At Last". In all honesty, and with respect to Etta could anyone have sang that song with as much heart and pain as a woman strung out on drugs and alcohol? Cut her some slack I think she did great. They both have very distinct voices and while I do favor the original a little more she did nailed it. Enough with that I am diggin that cat Howlin Wolf in the film and even Columbus Short did a nice job. Overall the movie is good and the sound track is nice as well.
All of these songs are great, and they made me go back and listen to the originals again, that by its self was worth it. To all of the critics of these covers get a hobbie, the originals stand on their own merrit.
I liked the movie and I liked the songs all over again when Beyonce sang them. I got the originals and now I got the this record. It's okay to be happy with it all versions, because we get to choose which we are in the mood for.
beyoncé has a very soulful voice she should make songs like this....great movie great album :)
