We still have you, Neil. Thanks again.
this is classic old neil. if I close my eyes I see neil at 30 here, circa 1975 and tonights the night or zuma. great guitar driving tunes, lots of fun, "just singin a song" sounds as if it could have come off of "live rust"...incredible track. when worlds, fuel line, cough up the bucks, hit the road, light a candle. the backing band and harmonies are spot on. rock on neil!
Thank God for the Neil Youngs out there. Instead of the self-absorbed, all about me rap and hip hop, and plastic, substance-less pop that permeate the "air waves" these days, it's nice to have a rare alternative: real rock and roll with an actual message that goes beyond how many ho's one has in their harem, how much bling they're wearing, how much money they have, and how naughty they can be. Neil's rock and roll almost sounds cave man like as he's gotten older-- which suits this music just fine. It's raw, and real. And, the car/highway imagery is just the setting for what he's really talking about: the state of our lives in this present economic, political, and cultural abyss. Besides that, some of these songs really stay with you, like "Get Behind The Wheel," "Johnny Magic," and the title track. And, "Light A Candle" shows Neil can still change it up and come up with an acoustic gem that harkens back to his glorious "Harvest" era. Long live Neil Young, and Keep On Rocking in what we hope will continue to be the Free World.
Neil Young may not have the late John Lennon's vocal talent, but a Day in the Life (live) music video is rockin'!
Neil's a gear-head and now he's going to tell you - in song- how to get them gears, and your soul, of course, burnin' clean. But they're ain't nuthin' soulful about an automobile, whether it burns on gas-o-line or vegetable oil. Get a room!
A slow climb a up a slippery slope that never quite feels that he has strong foothold, and fails to make it to the top of his musical plateau on this journey of disappointment. He collapses in a heap, tired and spent.
No offense intended but contrary to another reviewers comments the "garage band" aspect of this album only adds character rather than coming across as inadequate recording technique. Hearing real instruments and real voices with vintage sound contributes to the impact of the music. I would have given four (4) stars however I must admit I found the lyrics sometimes weak and repetitious but the music almost makes up for it with typical Neal Young intensity. For those who still enjoy real Rock and Roll without today's electronic distractions this is worth a listen.
Wow. Just nice to hear Neil get back to rock. F the politics, but just like the raw, crunchy tunes. Watching Day in the Life made me jones for a show. Come to Charleston Neil!!!!!!!!!!!! King of the one note guitar solo. Bababooey to you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Neil sounds as whiney as ever on this album. What a wast of 10 bucks if you ask me (yes you did!). He and Bruce should do a project together called (Throw In The Bucket...We're Done).
Another great from Neil Young! I saw him in concert for the 19th time last night in Kansas City (I never miss a concert) and he always gives a great show! I have always loved the fact that he always keeps with the current issues of our times that we live. He is a man whom always has a view into the modern world we live in today. From the times such as "Ohio" to today's issues that we need to take care of our mother earth for our children to enjoy, and he does it all in a song! A great song writer and performer! As a Native American, I once again thank you for some great tunes about some great issues!! Neil will never be a wash up! He can still rock in the very best!
Neil Young is still driving people crazy after four decades of music. I love it. He is the only artist to challenge his audience at every turn. Are you up to the challenge? (second review)
Music that matters. So many aging artists are stuck in the past. Neil lives in the present. Ripe and Juicy. On Time. Apparently he hasn't sung everything he has to say. I hope he never shuts up. Intagwity. Yeah, that's right.
if you don't love neil you don't know ANYTHING about music.
i've read mixed reviews for this one, but for me... neil can do no wrong. so if you're a fan you'll support this record and enjoy it as i do!
AFTER 'CHROME DREAMS II' I SAID I WOULDN'T BUY A NEW NEIL YOUNG ALBUM BUT AFTER LISTENING TO THE 30 SEC. CLIPS ON ITUNES I HEARD WHAT I THOUGHT WAS SOME NEW AND DIFFERENT RIFFS. AFTER PURCHASING THE ALBUM I KNOW NOW I WILL DEFINITELY NOT BUY A NEW NEIL YOUNG ALBUM AGAIN, I'LL JUST CONTINUE EXPANDING MY COLLECTION OF HIS 60S AND 70S ALBUMS AND I WOULD SUGGEST THE SAME TO ANYONE WHO'S ON THE FENCE. ALSO, NEIL YOUNG REALLY NEEDS TO GET A GOOD DRUMMER, CHAD CROMWELL AND ESPECIALLY RALPH MOLINA JUST DON'T CUT IT. ONE LAST THING, THE PACKAGING LEAVES A LOT TO BE DESIRED, NO WONDER CD SALES HAVE FALLEN SO MUCH WHEN YOU PUT NO THOUGHT OR IMAGINATION/EFFORT INTO THE PACKAGING.
Thank the stars for Neil Young. He writes and plays the music he wants to play, critics be damned. This is a decent album, but I do think this could have been better if it were done with Crazy Horse. Greendale was interesting and had some great parts, but I would love to see a true Neil Young and Crazy Horse album done at least one more time before everyone is too old (if that is even possible for him and the Horse). Songs like "Just Singing A Song" , "Hit The Road", "When Worlds Collide" and even "Cough Up The Bucks" would have made great tracks to play with Crazy Horse and that simple, guitar/bass/drums sound blended with Young and Talbot's raw screw-it-we-sing-what-we-want vocals. No matter what Neil Young does, he continues to be a very underrated guitarist, both electric and acoustic. He knows exactly what to play/what not to play, and has that signature tone all his own.
This is a solid album that deserves respect. There are about three songs out of the ten that make the album worth the purchase price. Fork in the Road is great, Light a Candle is a solid song with the classic essence of Neil's music, and my favorite on the album Just Singing a Song. I wish Billy Bob Thornton would take some music lessons with Neil !
just 'cough up the bucks' and pick this one up. if you don't own harvest then don't bother and start there.
What can I say........He is still a viable artist. He is a chameleon, an innovator, and keeps coming out with great albums. Can't wait to see a live show.......again.
Neil seems to be cranking out tunes to coincide with world events rather than what's in his heart.
.."One Day In A Garage Far Away!"..Oh; Yeah!-Go tell Neil Young to "Get Behind The Wheel" and take that "Fork In The Road!"-( Just don't tell him to crank out another "Heart Of Gold" or "Rockin' In The Free World"; 'Cause He'll tell You to go "Hit The Road!")-{We just caught a rare interview with Neil on "American Masters"; Where he admits he can be "Intense"; Especially when taking yet another Musical Excursion; Adamantly "Dedicated To The Muse!"}-On "Fork In The Road"; You get Neil as: The Rocker; The Protester; The Gearhead & The Reporter!-Neil Young just keeps on Surprising and Entertaining us! (His "Home Movies" are a real Hoot!)-"Don't Be Denied"-Get It!...by Grimmbo.
Neil. Stop. Just stop please. It's over. You use your past glory to justify garbage. I say this as a friend and true fan. Give it a rest. Someone has to say it.
My 26th Neil album, and while this is not his best, it's a heck of a lot of fun and worthy of 5 stars! More "Tonight's the Night" than "Harvest" or "Prarie Wind", and more lighthearted than "Living with War". He doesn't take himself too seriously in this album: "I'm a big rock star, My sales have tanked, But I still got you...Thanks." And his messages are contemporary: "There's a bailout coming but it's not for me. It's for all those creeps watching tickers on TV." He even get's his flat screen repo'd and misses the Raiders game. Great Videos - low budget hilarious - love the air guitar and the shots inside the car! Well done, Neil. Thanks.
This album is like a used car lot: a few clunkers, some junkers, and a couple of classic gems. Good grooves & crunchy guitars, mostly mediocre lyrics. Gotta love Neil, though!
I have been listening to Neil for 40 years. Not only does he continue to make great music, this album may be one of the most relevant statements on America today. He is tuned into the bailouts, our love affair with gas guzzling cars and the WAR. It's like he took in all of our nonsense over the last few months and created a coordinated masterpiece. Even then, his optimism comes through. Neil will keep on rockin till the power goes out. Thank you!
Feels like old times. New album getting killed in reviews. Neil veers off. What's he doing? Let's underestimate it. Where are the Archives? This is a great band and it really cooks. The music is in the core of Neil's wheelhouse. I wonder if he can hit this pitch... He can. It's recorded on tour and the band's groove shows. Some reviews have complained about the album being too simplistic, idealistic and recorded too quickly. THIS IS WHAT NEIL YOUNG DOES. And Neil Young is far from simplistic. The music grinds, grooves and soars like his best work. It's tight and loose at the same time. His voice sounds great and the arrangements are dead on. A bonus - goofy videos. God help us, I think he's using a Flip or something. I've been a long time fan of Neil's (since 1968). This is his strongest music, taken as a whole, in a while. Great songs - Just Singing a Song is a classic. Light a Candle, Johnny Magic, Fork in the Road and on, these are the real deal from Neil. He's having a blast and the band is too. Great album. Neil, like John Irwin's mother used to say, "Good for you, GOOD FOR YOU."
It's like a hot meatball sub with all the fixinsss
OK, rockin' and acoustic....Neil fans will luv it. All the rest?......well, you are....the "rest." So be it, we're good with that. Bru
the best niel yet. a must have. i love it...
I initially was a little sad we weren't gonna get too much acoustic out of Neil this time around, but this album really grew on me. Neil is still ornery, relevant, and passionate, and you gotta love it!
If you like Neil Young's music you'll like this new album. If you don't know or like Neil Young; download the "A Day In the Life" video. That should make you a fan...
This is what real MUSIC sounds like. Everyone who is trying in the business take note on Neil Young's run & you'll be blown away. This album is nothing short to greatness & everything this man puts out is bad-a*s!!!! That's the way I know how to put it in words & his vocals to go with the guitar is extremely food for thought like if your a writer or a film maker, Neil's music can fit into almost every scene. I love this dude & I love iTunes for putting it out!!!
I've heard every Neil Young album since 1969, and this is good average three-star Neil, the kind of unchallenging and unchallenged stuff he could write in his sleep. (I really think his work took a big dip downward when he got that "It's all the same song" idea. Bad influence on him, very bad.) However unfortunately this continues "Living With War" 's infatuation with poor sound quality. Evidently Neil thinks that c. 1980 garage band sound is a mark of authenticity. I really wonder what to think about people who have to FAKE their signifiers of authenticity.... Note to Neil: today's kids get better sound quality out of a computer, an A/D converter, and a halfway decent microphone. So, three stars marked down to two because he won't spend the bucks for decent production. Boo hiss on that. Longtime fans deserve better than average SQ, not worse than average. I wish someone would introduce him to Kavi Alexander.
You have to get the cotton out of your ears naysayers! this album is solid. The messages, the band, and the songs. come on. Older fans, don't be put off. this one does cook!
Even after suffering a brain aneurysm, Neil is still more relevant and smart and painfully soulful than most of the crap that passes for music in this here new world. Neil takes to the road in his electric car and slams down some primal notes, once again. Who else tackles politics, love/loss and road themes in such a joyous way? Not since old Bruce was tapping em out in his original leather jacket. Neil, rock on. I love you.
As a longtime young fan i guess you could say i was a bit disappointed in his last few efforts. Never the less, Neil proves his timeless GENIUS once again with Fork in the Road. This concept album is filled with great melodies, beat, guitar, pathos and humor. If you're a Neil Young fan, I highly recommend it...you'll recognize certain riffs borrowed from past works. This collection of songs is a real treat....Also check out the video of "A Day in the Life"

Neil Young is an inspiration to all of us who love to Rock, young and old!! I feared that this could be another of his near misses, but I am still smiling - his tongue is firmly planted in his cheek here, as he pointedly jabs at modern day consumerism and head in the sand politics. While I appreciate this in Neils' more recent work, it would not be enough for me - but fortunately, he has wrapped it all up in killer tunage - the guy just can't stop himself ! There are four videos offered here, including a surprisingly adept version of " A Day in the Life", and the title song video is worth the price of admission by itself. Thank you Neil - you make me proud to be an ' elder dude ' !!
Last Neil Young i purchased was Silver and Gold which i really enjoyed.I had to get Light a Candle to play along with on my guitar.Keep on rockin' in the free world Neil.
