Garbage. M. Ward is so much better on his own. Zooey only detracts from his talent. I wish I could give 0 zeros, or better yet, negative.
Great voice, but not catchy or memorable at all. Sounds almost improved
I really like this CD. Which makes sense because I adore Zooey Deschanel and I love love love listening to music from the 50's. This CD does have a really retro 50's-ish sond to it.
Their style is very different from most songs today, but the more you listen to them the more you get hooked. The songs are catchy, and the lyrics are fun. I love this album, and volume two is just as good if not better.
oh how happy I am that they collaberated. What a great pair. His cool guitar with her sweet husky voice. Pure joy listening.
Can we come up with something new????
I have this on vinyl and i think i've played it more than 50 times and I'm still not tired of listening to it. The musical arrangements from M. Ward are amazing and Deschanel's writing and vocals are just perfect. I love it. Counting the days until Volume Two.
Zooey has got a great voice. A serious talent. M. Ward's vocals are kind've boring, but he's got some great instrumental skill. Overall, I'm mostly not feeling it. I want to like this album more, but I can't shake the feeling that it could be better. There's nothing unpleasant about it, but nothing very exciting either. About 70% of them didn't make the cut to keep in my collection. Most of these songs have a 50's feel to them mixed with a Country & Western vibe and it's just kinda boring. It's Tammy Wynette singing doo wop and it's not my genre. Maybe more interesting songs just don't match her vocal niche, which is a shame. I also hate annoying back-up singers and this album has the worst sort of them. Occasionally some songs will sound almost like Camera Obscura - and that's the part of She & Him that I like. Camera Obscura will also occasionally have 50's sounding songs and those are my least favorite of their songs as well. Obscura has a very subtle hint of sensuality in their music, however, and that's what makes them so much more interesting.
What is so great about Zooey Deschanel? It is that she is so unique and talented. I have been a fan of hers for a while and I just realized she had a band. I love it!!! Totally worth your money. Her and Him, there music is different from anything else these days. BUY IT NOW!! you will not be dissappointed :)
When I first listened to this album, I was only into a few songs. A few weeks later, I went back to listen to the rest of the album. I bought another couple songs. The cycle repeats over and over again until the only songs of She and Him I don't have are "Got Me" and "I Should Have Known Better". I think that Zooey Deschanel is far superior to other acrtess/singers out there. She's sweet, cheerful, but then again she can be sentimental. I love that she wrote Volume Two's lyrics, and there not the cliche lyrics either; they're meaningful and poignant but still happy and youthful. Coming from a person who loves old songs (1920-60's) She and Him is fantastically indie. M. Ward is equally as awesome. His guitar playing is fabulous and I can honestly say I like just his music too. Overall, I am a devoted She and Him fan. Buy the album...it's worth it.
I love it!
incredible
I love her music! Her voice is amazing and her indie old fashion styles definitely suits her. With the songs "this is not a test" and "sentimental heart" this album is one of the greatest I've heard.
Overall, this album is dynamite. Ten out of ten stars. this is probably my most played album, along with Regina Spector's "Far". She & Him is so amazing. How have I never heard of them before this??? Anyway, this is my breakdown of the cd's tracks: Sentimental Heart: 8/10 - This bored me at first, but it really grows on you. It's kind of wistful but cute at the same time. Why Do You Let Me Stay Here: 10/10 - Best song on the cd. And one of S&H's best known songs. So happy! This is Not a Test: 7/10 - The chorus on this song can get annoying Change is Hard: 8/10 - The words in the song are so cute. It's about breaking someone's heart and wanting to go back and fix it. I Though I Saw Your Face Today: 10/10 - My second favorite song. I love Zooey's voice in this song. It really showcases her unique vocals. Take it Back: 5/10 - Worst song on the cd, I think. I've only gotten all the way through this once. I think it's really boring I Was Made for You: 9/10 - Sooo cute! A happy summery song about love You Really Got a Hold on Me: 10/10 - I wouldn't think I'd like this, but strangely I do. It's about not wanting to love someone, but loving them anyway Black Hole: 9/10 - Very witty lyrics. My favorite line is "I'm alone on a bicycle for two". ;) Got Me: 6/10 - Another boring song. Sounds like a bad country song. I Should Have Known Better: 7/10 - Not my favorite. It has a strange Hawaiian vibe going on Sweet Darlin': 7.5/10 - Kind of neutral toward this song. It's cute, but forgetable Swing Low Sweet Chariot: 9/10 - Great bonus track! Sounds like a cool, 1960's album, like the kind of treasure you'd find hidden in a back corner of a thrift shop All in all, this is a solid record. It's definitely one of my favorites. Now if I can only get my hands on some She & Him concert tickets...
Most of these reviewers seem to be blinded by their crushes on Zooey Deschanel. She really doesn't sing well. No, really. Sorry Zooey. Please stick to the acting career.
Honestly, Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward? They could just re-package Post War with Zooey Deschanel's picture on the cover and I'd buy it. She is completely irresistable. M. Ward is a lucky lucky (talented) lucky man. Zooey Deschanel could be in a crappy movie with Sarah Jessica Parker and Keanu Reeves and I would sit through it because she is so enchanting. What do her parents look like? I mean it's just frickin unbelievable.
I've had this album on vinyl for a while and it sounds waaaay better in that format, but I just had to finally get it for my Ipod. This reminds me of better times. BTW if anyone is looking for or enjoys that "retro" sound, I highly recommend listening to the Tontons.
She certainly is a quirky little thing, isn't she? I'm kinda diggin it
My opinion on this album is not skewed by my EXTREME crush on Zooey Deschanel. Just letting you know up front. When I first heard this CD, I was very pleased. One of the few CDs I actually listened to first track to the last. It was extremely unique and I really love the retro sound of it. I don't think this music can be classified as "Bubble Gum Pop", that title belongs to Britney Spears, and she doesn't have anything on Zooey and M. Ward. This music is full blown Indie style. With some 70's retro thrown in. I absolutely love it. Also, I saw She & Him, with Band of Horses in Bend, OR over Memorial Day Weekend, and I have to say this band (and her voice) sound so much better live than they do on the CD. That's hard to come by these days. With all the auto-tune and computerized voices, it is very hard to come by an artist that beats the crap out of their studio voice when performing live. And Band of Horses, WOW! What an loud and raw and extremely talented performance they gave this little city :) but that's a different story. Overall, this album is unique and special through and through. No, not everyone will love her voice. But everyone has a taste and personally I think to enjoy such an awesome voice you need to have a different perspective on music. And that's why She & Him is such a big hit with this person :)
Zooey has such an amazing voice, and this mish-mosh of songs just doesn't do her justice! Unfortunately, I think that her voice just doesn't appeal to the mainstream pop audience, and that is why she is stuck in this "alternative" world. But, this mix of country, motown, lounge, and alternative just isn't for her. Can't wait to see her get in the groove with someone who can help her be as big as she is supposed to be!
Love Zooey so much! I adore her fashion, and I'm a huge fan of New Girl. Her voice is so unique and beautiful I'm in love with her music!
I have listened to this a couple times now. The album itself has the most beautiful sound of something we don't get in the music industry anymore: Chemistry. This music fits together like a sock and a shoe. However, I'd like to dedicate this review to the absolutely awesome "Swing Low Sweet Chariot". One of the most spectacular pieces of music I've heard in a long time. Just Zooey's voice with backing humming. Probably one of my favorite songs in a while.
Loved volume 2 so went back and bought volume 1. Love them both
There isn't a song on this album that I find displeasing. Zooey Deschanel has an amazing voice and makes this album soar. It's beautiful in its simplicity. Can't wait to hear Volume Two!
I saw her in the yes man and i wish the song she sang, im not your booty call was on it. It was a good song. It would of changed the vibe of the album but i still love it.
The duo of M. Ward and Zoey Deschanel successfully created a sound that is unique and all their own - and i enjoy every single part of it! I am anxious to see what your new album in March will entail! I think you two would be perfect to record a remake of Ritchie Valen's "We Belong Together" - with the combination of Ward's vintage instrumentals and Zoey's graceful voice, they provide a special depth to any love song. Keep up the great work!!
I never knew Katy Perry's other stuff was so much better! =}
This is my favorite album. Really Got a Hold of Me is probably the best song. M. Ward and Zooey make a great duo.
I love She and Him's approach to music. They're blending the soft sound of old 50s with more modern instrumentation to create the most catching thing I've heard in a long time. Do it forever!
I was really drawn from zooeys voice from a rendition of please, please, please by The Smiths from the 500 Days of Summer album. So I ended up purchasing both Volume 1+2. First week or two I only enjoyed one one song and the rest were really different to me. I spent that whole week trying to figure out why so many people rate it 5 stars. As I listened to it more and more most of the songs grew on me and I am so glad I purchased it. I realized why people rate it 5 stars now. She is simply amazing! I'm enjoying more and more songs as I'm listening to it. Hope that helps.
I love this album so much. M Ward's guitar complements well with Zooey Deschanel's voice. The vocals are my favorite. Her voice is remniscent of music of a bygone era. The lyrics and tunes of the songs are warm, cheery and sweet. Listening to this album is like bathing yourself in a warm tub of sunshine.
wow, this is almost perfect. and i really LOVE the beatles cover!!! I think this whole album is timeless and wonderful!! Can't wait for volume 2. and coachella. BUY THIS ALBUM NOW FOLKS!!!!!!!!
I must say, whoever thinks this is Katy Perry, you are seriously confused! Zooey deschanel has amazing vocals! This album is great!
This is a great cd, older style brings back the smoothness of music i will be picking the album up as well, can't wait for volume.2 to come out =)
So good! Zooey has the most amazing voice. Of course some songs are better than others but that's how it is with a anyone else's album.
There is something about M.Ward that is soo amazing his stage presence.. mellow.. his method of madness with the way he plays guitar.. he just stands there.. and you dont expcet anymore or any less.. Now thats talent.. No costume no dance no smoke and glass so to speak. And Zooey.. her voice sounds the same live and on cd infact " You got a hold on me" sounds better live.. go figure... Im so excited about Volume 2!!!!!!!!!! Theives is a great song off of that one
I got into She & Him after watching (500) Days of summer. The music is so chill and oldschool I just love it. I love anything Zooey is in. She's great. That's one beautiful voice she has. If your a fan of music this is a must have.
She & Him is probably one of the best album I've heard in a long time. Though it is a little short, not one song is a bad song and it'll keep you having it on repeat. Anyways great album, can't wait for Volume Two in march. :D
I am so bored of actress turned singer songwriters. Other than Zooey! This song has a great 60's pop kind of feeling and listening to it is a pleasure.
This is a great album! I listen to it all the time, and the songs are super catchy. Every song feels a little different, so it keeps the album exciting. I really like the lyrics and she's got a unique and pretty voice. Definitely worth buying!
I love zooey deschanels voice and the music genre. The song why do you let me stay here goes along well with the mini 500 days if summer podcast :))
SHE'S AMAZING! GREAT VOICE. .
I think she has so Etching sweet and special that is lost in girls today. I am a national spokesperson and I use her music in between my breaks to keep the crowd happy. I love you Zooey!
Despite a couple of rather cute and catchy little numbers, the album is derivative and mildly irritating. At times, it is reminiscent of a bad country record you found at a thrift store. At points, it evokes a cat's chorus! I hate to be critical, but I certainly didn't get enough bang for my buck. 'You Really Got a Hold On Me' is just criminal! I look forward to hearing something more original in the future.
This is a great She & Him album, but is weaker than Volume Two, sadly! But it still is awesome! Key Tracks: Sentimental Heart, Why Don't You Let Me Stay Here?, and Sweet Darlin'
This album is pants
This blew my expectations out of the water! This is an amazing album, I have yet to get Volume Two, because I can't stop listening to Volume One! Thank you Ms. Deschanel and Mr. Ward, you are a power combo!
I heart this album. When the hell does volume 2 come out???
Buy this album instead of Taylor Swift's new one. You get just as many songs for a lower price and the songs have much better quality and lyrics.
I love her voice and they are a great duo. I specially love the Beatles cover songs!! Amazing!
