Penny_ Lane - This album is music to my ears!!!I really like this new album..its different from her others but still has the same orginal quirkyness that I so dearly love!!! She is one talented chica and I would recommend this one and all the rest of her albums to anyone who likes something uniquely special!
Shalma M. - FarAs a fan of Regina's Begin To Hope and Soviet Kitsch eras, I enjoyed the songs on this album. I did feel a much more poppy essence among the music generally. However, Far is a heartfelt album, and I really enjoyed the songs I purchased. She clearly did some incredible writing for this album, and I'm happy I purchased the songs I did (1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9). In addition to those, I also love 2, 11, and 12. This woman is just beautiful in so many ways. I appreciate her being in the music-making world.
iSingiSwim - A fabulous CD all around: 8.8A fabulous CD all around: 8.8
For a taste, I would recommend buying Eet, Blue Lips, Laughing With, Dance Anthem of the 80's, and Genius Next Door.
The Calculation: 8.5
An upbeat, poppy song, but not as memorable as others on the album
Eet: 9
A beautiful, easily accessible song
Blue Lips: 10
One of my favorite songs on the album, breathtakingly beautiful and meaningful
Folding Chair: 9
A fun, cute, quirky song
Machine: 7
Possibly my least favorite song on the album
Laughing With: 10
A gorgeous and touching song for those who believe in God and those who don't
Human of the Year: 7.5
A fine song but not one of the best on the album
Two Birds: 8
A sweet song on the album, nothing complex about the lyrics
Dance Anthem of the 80's: 9.5
I didn't like this song at first, but it's become one of my favorites - grows on you with its simple melody and repetition
Genius Next Door: 10
A wonderful, thought-provoking song with incredibly original and interesting lyrics
Wallet: 9
A sweet song about finding someone's lost wallet and using their Blockbuster card to find their address
One More Time With Feeling: 8.5
A fun, catchy song with a great chorus
Man of a Thousand Faces: 8
Slightly eerie, and although not one of my favorites, an appropriate ending to the album
FutureCritic666 - My favorite albumAnd it's been like 5 months since I bought it.
danc13 - SELL OUT?Loved the experimentation and quirkiness of her previous albums, not to mention the dark streak that balanced some of the more cheerful tunes. This feels WAY too radio-friendly for me, and was truly a disappointment.
Cass1dyB - FOLDING CHAIR!That's all
Krista09 - Regina is a wonder-woman.This album is great, I love every song on this album. The songs that don't have much popularity are so great. The sounds that she creates are wonderful!
libraryminded - WowI just love Spektors amazing piano/vocal work. Many people underestimate the ability of the combination, but she perfects the style! Great job
Cdraso - What a masterpiece! This is the best album I've ever listened to in my life. I always get tired of musicians after a few months of listening, but this album is the exception. Over 2 years later and I am still absolutely in love with every single song.
Blah. . . - A good starting place...This album is a good starting place for someone like me who had only heard Us and Fidelity before receiving this album as a birthday gift. When I first listened to Far, The Calculation, Two Birds, and Dance Anthem of the 80s stuck out to me and where my favorites. I did get bored of this and ended up listening to the album over again and liking almost all of it (although I will say in every one of her albums there is at least one song that is not my cup of tea). I downloaded the rest of her albums and found some of her music is very difficult to get into. I ended up liking a lot of songs that I wouldn’t have ever liked let alone finished if I hadn’t been introduced to this album and Regina Spektor in a slightly toned down fashion. If you compare Fidelity (one of her most popular songs) to Back of a Truck (one of my personal favorites) you can see an example of what I’m trying to say. Fidelity is approachable, easy to listen to, short, catchy, with simpler lyrics. On the other hand Back of a Truck, like so many of her best songs (and again this is what I think, you may prefer her short songs like Flyin’), is long and filled with odd lyrics and vocals that are sometimes off putting. It took me several tries to listen to the song all the way through and even more to not skip a section I disliked in the middle. I’m glad I kept trying and I’m not trying to say listening to her music is a chore it’s just hard to get in to. We’re so used to fast catchy music we have trouble getting into music like hers. But what I’m really trying to say is, if you are a new listener, start here and work backward through her collection.
singin&dancin - L-O-V-EI discovered Regina a while ago...fell in love with her music!!! This album is no exception! Whoo-Hoo :))
flashback trip syndrome - Amazing!I know of very few artists that can put out two brilliant albums in a row, but Regina Spektor happens to be one of them. Each song on Far sounds like it could have come straight off Begin To Hope (which, at least in my opinion, is about as close to perfect as an album will ever get). Regina's vocals are, as usual, impressive and unique, and the piano work is gorgeous to say the least. Regina hasn't lost her touch at all - in fact, "Folding Chair" and "Blue Lips" may be two of her greatest songs yet. And if you're into her darker stuff, "Machine" reminds me a whole lot of "The Flowers," my favorite from Soviet Kitsch. Even songs I didn't like much at first (namely "Wallet" and "Man of a Thousand Faces") are starting to grow on me. Overall, I'd say this album is pretty awesome, definitely worth nine bucks.
Nora and Eli - AmazingAll her songs are amazing. I've introduced her music to all my friends, and I love her songs!
Keep up the good work!
mebz713 - VERY DEEP and AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!OK, when I first got the song "Laughing With", I thought it was going to be quirky like songs in "Begin to Hope". When I settled down and actually listened to the song, it was so deep I cried (but that's normal for me, because I cry when I hear pretty songs)! Seriously, the song was.... oh, I can't tell you! You have to listen to it! If you LOVE deep and beautiful songs, BUY THIS ALBULM!!!!!!
MillieCW - Amelia's viewRegina Spektor is someone who doesn't need to be mainstream to have good music, she has created wonderful soul searching songs that I personally could listen to for hours. She does not need to sing songs hat have no meaning to her to be a good artist. She inspires me to speak my mind and not let anyone change it and I am very surprised she has not become hugely famous for her talented works. Thank you Regina for creating such beautiful music I hope you continue.
kprmahre - Fantastic! If I could use two words to explain this CD, I would just say "Buy it."
But fortunately, I can use a lot more than two words. :)
My friend Claire introduced me to Regina Spektor, and she is absolutely amazing. I'm a pianist myself, and she is really inspiring to me and many other musicians, I'm sure.
Her voice has the best range I've ever heard, no kidding.
I would tell you what my favorite songs from Far are, but I really can't choose. When I first got the CD, I spent pretty much a week listening to nothing else but Dance Anthem of the 80's. It's really addicting. But then I forced myself to listen to the other songs too, and they're just as good, if not better.
People who like Regina Spektor might like:
Ingrid Michaelson, A Fine Frenzy, Kate Nash, Holly Rossmiller, Bright Eyes, Keane, or Lydia.
Colter_unical - great !!wow what great vocals
CielleIsHere - Love Regina!Regina Spektor is an amazingly talented person. This album is great! In my opinion, begin to hope was better, but this one is great too. My favorites are eet, laughing with, blue lips, folding chair, and dance anthem of the 80's.
BrianSwaldi - Odd BirdI'm all for artist independence and artistic self direction, but maybe she needs someone to tell her what to sing and how to sing it, because she can't seem to get out of her own way to let her beautiful voice star instead of her personality. All of music is the worse for it. She's an odd bird. More rambling and random lyrics that are often about nothing at all but what was on her mind. Why can't she just sing instead of putting her personality into it? Sing some standards maybe?
For instance, Folding Chair is mostly a wonderful song and then she throws out this hiccup like dolphin sound and completely ruins it. Like i'm supposed to go "ooh she's not afraid to be odd and unique!" She doesnt have a voice for that kind of crap. She has the voice of a classy vocalist, but she attempts to turn songs that could be new standards into some female version of a brain damaged Primus song.
Her voice is perfect, her music is a tragedy. It's so empty and pretentious, yet not shallow. How pointless is that? And, my God, how hard up do you have to be for material to use finding a wallet as inspiration?? Several songs are that "this is what i did today" bland. Really weak writting.
Overall what bothers me most about all of her albums is that i have to wade through soo much crap to get to the good pieces of her music.
shortydee - The Best Album Out There!I love all of Regina's albums but this one is my favorite. This is definetly a must buy album and I would recommend it to anyone. My favorite songs from this album would have to be The Calculation, Folding Chair, And Dance Anthem. I love Regina and wish that I could see her live.
dillonboss - Amazing album. that's allRegina Spektor never fails to create pleasing music. Very rarely these days can you listen to an album from top to bottom and like every song. This album is like that. If you don't have it already, you are crazy so buy this now. Thanks Regina!
puppy lover!!!! - laughing withthis is the only song I got so far off her album and i am in LOVE it is so beautiful wether you believe in god or not. it makes me want to sing and cry at the same time. I RECOMEND THIS TO ANYONE!!!!
Cupcakegirl - Love it but...I really love Regina Spektor, but why is it under gay pride? I don't get it. She is not gay i know that.
Ryan Burdick - I Can't Stop Listening To This!Seriously, I can't stop, and I don't want to! Rock on Regina, see ya in Ann Arbor!
edgeofyourseat - Am I the only one......who doesn't like this album nearly as much as her other work? Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore Regina, and some of the songs on this are really great- I love Eet, Two Birds, Dance Anthem of the 80s, Genius Next Door, & Wallet- but I really didn't like how a lot of the songs were produced. Folding Chair has a strange, twangy/beachy vibe that detracts from the song for me, and on some other songs the use of percussion distracted me from her beautiful melodies. I love all of her demo versions of Time is All Around, for instance, but on this album there are often some cymbals tossed into the song in a way that is highly distracting. Dance Anthem also has too many cymbals for my taste.
I love you, Regina, but Far definitely isn't your strongest work- it's not as quirky as Mary Ann Meets The Gravediggers or Soviet Kitsch, not as soulful as Songs or 11:11, and not as well-produced as Begin to Hope. Don't get me wrong, all of the melodies on this are lovely, but compared to her older material, I really didn't enjoy as much.
VIP Music Critic - Great! This is a really great album. I love how every track is all piano. Some songs are upbeat, while others are sadder. Favs are: Eet, Blue Lips, Machine,Two Birds, Genius Next Door
the worst of kids - wowI am a fan of hardcore, metal core, indie rock. from bands like shere khan, blood for blood, champion, set it straight, as I lay dying, they came burning, and the program to bands like, say anything, the mountain goats, and weatherbox. this is not the point. I bought this album because of her performance on SNL... amazing... as is this album. Regina transends genres. she got my attention, and I'm glad she did. I wouldve paid $18.00 for this album. so if you're reading this and are still with me spend the $8.99 or whatever it is and support this amazing artist. you won't regret it.
aalove34 - Doesn't get better than this!I love this record!! Her singing is so sweet, effortless and full of emotion. She takes risks with her vocalizing and never fails. This album makes me look forward to what is yet to come but in the meantime I will be spinning this one on repeat. Over and over and over again...
Coco leman - woopsi feel i should apologize, i am pretty sure that that single "one star" rating came from me choosing the one star on accident in quest to find the review that gave this album a single star. So woops.
lllllllllllllily - UnbelievableAs a new fan of Regina Spektors' music, I only knew a few songs. I bought this CD thinking it would be good background music, but was blown away by the majesty of the album.
Her voice, the piano, her lyrics, it all fits together in way that often gives me chills.
when I get CDs I try not to listen to them too often to prevent getting sick of them. However this album is incredible, there isn't one bad song. So every day, I listen to it the whole way through! I can't stop myself. This album surprised me in so many ways. Obviously I recommend it strongly.
heatherharmony - D:Why can't I complete my album now?!?!? It says it's being modified?! D:
NAOOO, I need it for a road trip today!
suprsam - Really unique; really entertainingThis was my first of Regina's albums, and I am happy with it. Her story-telling, her poetry, her voice--all amazing and all unique. My fav songs are Blue and Eet.
Musiclover0527 - Love!Regina is so inspirational! I absolutely love her vocalizing and piano music! :D her music is very unique. My favorite song on this album is Blue Lips <3
H>E>R - love itthe words in all of her songs are amazing and funny, i would recomend this to anyone. i think its time to step out of the "satusquo" music and take a splash into regina specktor because this girl is incredibly talented. my favorite song: Genius Next Door
MHIF - She's growing well.I've been a fan for some time, and I think she really shows in this ablum how she has grown from previous studio productions. She is holding on very well to her sound and nitch while progressing into less vague and more meaningful lyrics. She is very talented.
akhavein - It's oh so good!Great album...
Honest Opinion Now - "Human of the Year" = Song of the year!I downloaded this song a/f hearing a small portion on the new HBO series ENLIGHTENED. I fell in love INSTANTLY! I listen to it over and over again! Something a/b the way the instruments (LOVE PIANO)/her voice swells, then becomes quiet throughout gives it a dramatic effect. It makes me shed a tear here and there, depending on my mood. It is also very empowering because of this dramatic effect. Just LOVE it! At some point soon, I'll purchase the entire album.
applefreak1616 - <33love her voice!!
Paladin913 - Best of Year So Far...This is my favorite non-soundtrack of the year so far. (The two soundtrack albums in competition with fave album are 500 Days of Summer and Fame.) This is Oct, so it is my favorite over 10 months.
Many albums have a couple of hits and then some mediocre stuff - this is one great song after another with no soft spots.
garcj372 - Have Nothing but Love for this WomanI've been a huge fan of Regina Spektor ever since I heard Soviet Kitsch back in 2004, when I was still a high school freshman. After that, I dwelled deeply into her previous albums, fascinated by just how much work she had already produced. I was also thrilled to discover the plethora of songs that lay in her live sessions and demos. Many Regina fans will be keenly aware of just how many songs have gone unproduced and are probably circling the web in noisy live recordings. However, every now and again, there comes a clean, good quality track. So, it goes without saying that I highly anticipated her fifth album. If only to hear how some of my most favorite tracks (folding chair, dance athem) had been captured in actual recording studios. So perhaps the only disappointing part of this album, to me, was that I attributed so many of these songs to a completely different sound, having heard Blue Lips, Folding Chair, Dance Anthem, Wallet, and Genius Next Door in a different environment. I treasured them as they were, so hearing them sung any different way seemed foreign and odd. In the past week, I have been listening to this album somewhat on a loop, and my own subjectivity shouldn't deterr any listener from enjoying this album, because it truly is a wonderful album. I love the hip hop vibe from Dance Athem, one of the most refreshing and amusing examples of how well a track can be redone and re explored. And Laughig With was justly picked as the single, but if you really want a taste of what she's about, I think Folding Chair and Wallet are perfect summations of her quirkiness and story-telling. In short, the album is another great extension of her previous work, and the witty, poetic writing is intact, as it should be. And I encourage anybody that has not seen her live, to do so, immediately, because she's a great performer.
all me and nobody else - PerfectionThis is an example of a perfect album. It includes beautiful ballads like "Blue Lips" and "Genius Next Door", but also fun dancy songs like "Dance Anthem of the 80's" and "Two Birds". The only song that shows Regina's exaggerative odd side is "Machine".
I would recommend "Blue Lips" if you're only getting one song.
reginaspektorfan12 - The Best! This is by far her best album.! Nice job Regina! i took an interest when my friend played it and thought it was a great song. She is very talented and has a great voice!
Meloncolony - Regina Really is the Human of the Year! ;)Haha. I love puns.
AAAanyway! I love Regina. She is an excellent artist, and I feel that Begin to Hope was really her masterpiece. Far is really a different kind of album than what she has done before. It is not so quirky, childish, and inexperienced as the other ones. Which were GREAT, don't get me wrong! ;) But this album seems to portray experience, age, and the journey of life in full blast. It's excellent if you want to listen to a seriously deep, melodic, and interesting album! Hehe. just BUY it already!!!! :)
~\~Julie~/~ - She's done it again!Phenomenal. This is a guilt-free purchase.
L andN2 - Folding ChairFolding Chair is a great song with a catchy tune to it!
Tiger Peps - Great stuff, but she's got some competitionRegina is great, no doubt about that, but she's got some up and coming competition in Florence + the Machine. If you haven't heard her debut album yet, you must. It's fantastic. However, I do like both artists and Regina's new album is pretty good.
LochNessieee - Regina is someone we all should see as a beautiful example. She's just so pure! Her music, all since "Songs" and "11:11" all the way up to "far" and everything in between is spectacular. The lyrics and music are original, real, and from the heart. We all should look up to Regina, I know I do. This is one of the best albums of the year for sure. Five stars for the album, and three cheers for Regina. I love every songs she's ever sang.
NOLAgirl - entrancingher music is so beautiful, it always has been, and it always will be. i really first fell in love with begin to hope and the songs "That Time" and "fidelity"; then started going farther and farther back. i wasn't displeased with any of it.
it's just so different from the average female musician.
the only thing that bothers me is that EVERY REGINA SONG IS 1.29. itunes, why? i hate this new raised prices thing.
thanks regina, for sticking out and making music that causes the world to be just a little bit more beautiful.
Speaker household - This album is Regina's best!!Far is Regina's best album. I just wish she made more albums like this!!!!!!!!
