- Overlooked

I love this album - I think it's been overlooked greatly. A comforting, contemporary look at life and love with Mayer's trademark soul.

- Not Impressed

I loved Contiuum and Try!, so I figured I'd try another album featuring the members of the John Mayer Trio. This album completely wastes the musical talents of Pino and Steve. In my opinion, that's probably John's fault, either intentionally (which was a poor choice musically) or unintentionally (which indicates that he's a bad songwriter). There is nothing even remotely complex about this album. Mayer was lauded as a fantastic guitarist after Try! Where is that talent on this album? I understand that this is Mayer solo album and not a JMT album, and thus is more subdued, but REALLY? This is the kind of music that puts me to sleep. Yes, there are a few good musical moments, and good lyrics from time to time; I am not doubting Mayer as a lyricist. I do have some serious doubts about his ability to write exciting, new, fresh, and innovative music, becuase there is none of that on this album, despite the fact that he employed two of the best session musicians alive. Get "Heartbreak Warfare" and "Assassins" and move on to better things. I'm glad I borrowed this album from my sister and didn't actually purchase it.

- Inspirational

I've been listening to John Mayer for years now. Whether it's guy troubles or a long drive, he's the one I choose. He basically clears my mind of anything negative and brings positive thoughts. Calming and magical, his music uplifts my spirit and he will forever be my favorite artist.

:D

- Rather Enjoyed

To be perfectly honest, I am rather disappointed that people keep comparing this album to Continuum. That was a phenomenal album. Hands down, no exceptions. But no two things are the same. Every artist has ast least one that is not well-received. John has yet to have that album for me. Sure there are some tracks that don't quite feel like they belong, but on a general whole, I really enjoyed this work of his art and felt he really stretched into some other platforms only previously scratched at. Perfectly Lonely hits a place too close to home and other tracks struck veins and nerves I'd long forgotten existed because no one artist (or collective group) has hit it. Being said - I have to say that he really is this generation's Bob Dylan (who is hands down my favorite artist of all time). Comparing him to such a powerful and influential singer/songwriter is a weighty argument, but Mayer's work speaks for itself. He is not afraid of his work, to try new things and test waters. Much like the beloved Dylan. I am convinced that Mayer's smooth voice and beautiful guitar can soothe my soul even if he were to do a cover of Rob Zombie's Dragula or Drowning Pool's Down With The Sickness. And he has certainly kept it coming with Born and Raised. I really cannot wait to see what the man does in his coming years.

- Amazing

This album is amazing, i dont see how people are saying its not as good as continuum. This album is full of great songs, the only songs i wouldnt recomend is do you know me and all we ever do is say goodbye. Album Review: Heartbreak Warfare: this song is definetly one of the standout songs on the album, i recomend this song 5/5 All we ever do is say goodbye: one of the weaker songs on the album, i wouldnt recomend it 2/5 Half of my heart: this song is one of the best on the album (it would be better without taylor swift, u can barley even tell shes singing 5/5 Who says: this is his most layed back song, thats why i love it, its easy to listen to, great song 5/5 Perfectly lonley: my favorite song on the album, must buy this, i know it will become a hit 5/5 Assassin: great song, the lyrics are very well written 5/5 Crossroads: this song ROCKS, awsome guitar part, may not be the best song lyric wise, but a must have song 5/5 War of my life: good song, nice beat, id recomend it 4.5/5 Edge of desire: nice song, nice beat, catchy 4/5 Do you know me: not a song id recomend, to slow, worst song on the album by a long shot 1/5 Friends, lovers or nothing: great great song, very catchy lyrics, one of the best on the album, a must have song 5/5 Album as a whole: great album with only 2 bad songs, must get this album 4/5

- "Not Continuum." Not Supposed to Be

When listening to this album, people need to put Continuum in a dark corner of their mind. Battle Studies is not a follow up to that album that we all know is Mayer's best work thus far. Battle Studies is a completely different project. It's a story that plays out track by track with "Crossroads" as an intermission. It contains a different agenda. It's linear. I don't think it's fair to compare the latest album of any artist with their previous or greatest effort. Don't do it with Continuum and Battle Studies because you will be disappointed. Instead, give this album a chance to be its own thing. The lyrics are profound "Heartbreak Warfare" and the melodies are laid back "Do You Know Me." Please give this whole album at least two solid listen throughs and I think you will find it remarkable in its own right.

- edge of desire

so i was really looking forward to this album. and it didn't impress me. perhaps my expectations were to high since Continuum had become "most played" in my itunes library, but either way, Mayer seems to have gone in a different direction; almost too pop-y. I liked his movement towards blues-pop fusion in continuum but i feel like this cd was more for satisfying fans than making new and inspiring music. This becomes extremely obvious in "Half of my Heart." Mayer almost sounds like he wrote a Taylor Swift 4-chord love song, including her in backgrounds. I was not impressed. Although, the first half of the album was not as expected, i did enjoy tracks 7-11, especially "Edge of Desire" i think John Mayer's lyrics here really connect with an audience and his emotion bleeds through. Personally, i did feel like i needed the completion to my John Mayer collection, but frankly i was slightly disappointed. Maybe i should just stick to his new Trio cds

- LSIGFV;IVB

It is 2011 and I still love this song! Theres not one time where the song got annoying! I love this song and John Mayor! :)

- Wfjkd

A Rocket to the Moon did a better job of singing Heartbreak Warfare than John Mayer did.

- John Mayer

He's a dou(he & his music is sub-par now. Surprise?

- Last of John Mayer as we knew him

In terms of his first four albums, this was probably the least impressive. But it was still quite good. Unfortunately his next two albums are the equivalent of God deciding to make a movie and settling on hot tub time machine. Is it entertaining? Mildly. But could God do better? Yes.

- Amazing

Amazing album from an amazing artist. Assassin and Edge of Desire are off the charts. This is a must have for anyone that appreciates great music and great talent.

- John Mayer is mine

Omg I love every album he has made. he is my favorite artist :) llloooooovvvvveeeeee u John Mayer!!

- One of the best soft rock albums EVER

Im not into heavy metal. This is the rock i listen to. It'sso close to flawless and its so addicting!!! Reccomended: Who Says, Heartbreak Warfare, Perfectly Lonely and everything else...

- PERFECT.

John Mayer is simply amazing. I grew up listening to his songs...I'm a teenager now, but I will NEVER get tired of his music. Every time I listen to a song on this album (or any John Mayer song, for that matter), it brings endless memories into my mind. The best parts of my life are replayed whenever I listen to these songs. John Mayer, thank you for being there with me my whole life, even though you don't know me. (:

- Makes me sad to be an American

John Mayer is just one example of the state of this country. Jerk-offs like him and the multitude of others get filthy rich for sucking. He is a goofy looking, talentless pu**y and these stupid Hollywood bit$^es just fall all over him. One day music will become music again.

- Bitter, wow.

I can hear so much bitterness in this album over his previous work. Obviously it plays out through the snippets we see in the stress from his personal life. I dig the completeness, but the message is one that will appeal to a particular class of people ... but this is what art creation is all about. He has hints of Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck, and Jack Johnson with a touch Cheech & Chong comic view on things throughout. I don't regret the purchase, but was a bit of a surprise in message. Can't wait for someone to nail him down and settle his soul, for sure. See you next album, John.

- Mayer has some kind of magic.

There is something about John Mayer, something that makes him different from all these other male-vocalists-with-acoustic-guitars. And after Battle Studies, I know he's going to be around for a long, long time. Heartbreak Warfare - 7.5/10 - Many fan's favorite, but I don't really see the appeal. Good lyrics, but a bit repetitive. It's not a bad song, though; a very good start to the album, but definitely not something to highlight. All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye - 9/10 - This song grows on you. I didn't quite notice it at first, but after a few listens it has become one of my favorites. It's another classic Mayer ballad; kind of reminds me of Slow Dancing. Beautiful piano and vocals. Half of my Heart - 9.5/10 - One of the best songs that Mayer has ever done. 3 things to mention: an amazing collaboration with Taylor Swift in the chorus vocals, creative and relatable lyrics and a very catchy melody. You have to buy this song; it's a croud pleaser. Who Says - 8/10 - The first single, it's a pretty little song. Not my favorite, but very good indeed; it's quite short and simple. Perfectly Lonely - 9/10 - I love this song! It's every single person's anthem! Just kidding, but it is a good song to sing along to and it has a very good feel. It also demonstrates Mayer's wide vocal range. Good, good. Assassin - 8.5/10 - This song is interesting. It is quite different to everything else. I'm not the biggest fan of the harmonies, but it does have really good lyrics. Crossroads - 6/10 - This song is a flop in my opinion. It looks like some kind of interlude; yet, I think Mayer has withdrawn too much from his style with this track and I don't like what he has done. Only the brilliant guitar can save this song. War of my Life - 9.5/10 - When you listen to this song, you will understand why we love John. Its message is clear, poetic and everyone can relate to it. Mayer doesn't experiment too much with this song; keeps it simple, like in older tracks of him. Edge of Desire - 10/10 - The song of the record. It's marvelous. I really can't see anything wrong about this song. Even if it's just for the lyrics, buy this song. 'I want you so bad, I'll go back on the things I believe'. Mayer, you are a genious. Do You Know Me - 9.5/10 - My other favorite, you can tell I'm a fan of ballads. It might be a bit boring for some people, but I think this lullaby-song won't make you regret buying it. Friends, Lovers or Nothing - 9/10 - The album ends with another absolutely Mayer track. It's a wonderful song, but, in my opinion, it's too long, which often makes it repetitive. BEST SONG: Edge Of Desire. WORST SONG: Crossroads. OVERALL MARK: 9/10

- A-mazing

Could listen to him all day. A freaking musical god.

- real music

mayer dominates again!

- Many people are bashing Who Says...

I just wanted to point out it's the reason and meaning behind the song why it does make sense as a single and is much better than the song seems at first listen...it's about being able to do whatever you want not being held back and who says you can't? and basically who cares if someone says no? go for it...it's just done in metaphors and some personal experiences of his

- Deeply Disappointed :(

John Mayer's best album was "Room For Squares" by far. In it he displays he is one of the best singer/songwriters in the country. He shreds on the guitar in "Neon" with jazzy bar chords that make the song like no other. But in this album he killed my enthusiasm in his music with shallow songs that don't display his superior guitar skills and amazing songwriting, and even pairing up with Taylor Swift. If he makes another album, I pray he improves on this failure. He probably knows he is capable of more. So many good artists are falling to the pressure of making poppy albums for more popularity. Among these are Train, One Republic, and Lifehouse. PLEASEE. SAVE THE GOOD MUSIC WE HAVE.

- Great Album!

Luv EVERY song!

- Heartbreak too similar to U2's I STILL haven't found what I'm looking for

Bono should sue like John was vanilla!

- John Mayer

Amazing and thought provoking album. I listen to it at least once a day; puts me in a great mood; lyrical genius and phenomenal musician!

- Not my favorite album, but one song...

makes me feel great...Heartbreak Warfare! It's fantastic!

- Unsure

I haven't bought this, but it sounds more pop-music-y than his older songs, and it's absulutely not what I expected.

- Amazing!!

John Mayer never dissapoints me, i love his voice!! his lyrics always speak to me in some way or another.

- Amazing

Title says all

- Back In The Day

Remember when John Mayer used to be good?

- its definetly good but...

where are the soulful guitar solos? i miss them. sure he's trying a new genre, but hes such an excelent guitar player. I still love it. Good job John

- โค๐Ÿ˜โœŒ

Let's be honest, John Mayer could sing the phone book & it would be amazing. In love with this album๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’šโค๐Ÿ’›

- LOVE IT. โค๐Ÿ‘

I've never liked a whole album, not even by my favorite artist. This is my favorite though and the only album that I actually enjoy. Love John Mayer and love how relaxing his songs can be. This by far, is the best album he has ever made.

- Perfect.

John Mayer is perfect. Always will be. As long as he doesn't pull a t-swift & we all know what that means, then he'll remain perfect.

- 8/10

This is fantastic, and I'm so glad I saw him live with Owl City! Key Tracks: Half of My Heart, Heartbreak Warfare, and Perfectly Lonely

- <3

love the new album!! its awsome(:<*in_love*>

- hmm

Not like the John Mayer I remember... but I do like Half of My Heart <3

- it's a grower...

Good pop songs. Good melodies. Not continuum. There are studio musicians and live musicians. John is a live musician as evidenced by "Where the Light is." I have also seen him live. This album is a good studio album. Worth the 11 bux.

- Great album, not his best.

This album was powerful enough to get me interested in John Mayer, but after exploring some of his other music i relized that this was not his best work.

- Good but...

I like John Mayer's music, but I don't like who John Mayer is.

- Good

Not as good as his other stuff but still great

- Ouch!

Wow! So dissapointed with this effort that the only word that pop's to mind is BRUTAL! John is an extremly talented artist but on this one, he clearly "phoned it in!"

- Bad-dull Studies

If you ever wondered what John Mayer could do in his sleep, this album might be your answer: it really sounds like he's napping most of the way through. There are a still few isolated moments of inspiration and originality...and the tracks 'Assassin' and 'Crossroads' capture most of them. The other tracks each seem like songs John Mayer could have written, rehearsed, and recorded in the same half hour. Repetitive riffs and lyrics, and harmonically cliched. Boring and unremarkable...a real departure from his other great collections.

- Props, John Mayer

I have a ton of John Mayer on my iTunes that I never listen to. But something about this album made me actually listen to it. I don't like John Mayer very much as a person, but these lyrics are so honest and raw. "Heartbreak Warfare" is beautiful and I love the lyrics. I think my favorite song on this album would have to be "Assassin" because it's so interesting lyrically and musically. Props, John Mayer.

- Taylor Rae

I love John Mayer.! Tilll the very end. keep it up babe, your doing great.

- Great!

This was the first album I got by John and I would have to say it's my favorite so far. You can relate to every song on this album especially if you've ever been in love. I feel like he writes from his heart and that's what makes his music so amazing. Thank you john

- Not his best, but still pretty good

I admit Battle Studies was not love at first listen. In many technical aspects, these songs are subpar compared to his previous work - choruses are repetitive and guitar isn't as amazing as it could be. But being an avid John Mayer fan, I faithfully listened a few more times through, and I have grown to appreciate his new sound. No more of the bluesy riffs that I love, but still plenty of catchy beats and tunes. And despite the slight peskiness of the repetition, evidence of his lyrical genious emerges consistently throughout this album, and I am still pleasantly surprised from time to time to realize some significance of a small phrase I hadn't noticed before. Granted, I still love Continuum way more, but this album is not a follow-up to Continuum; if you listen to it as an individual, you may find yourself appreciating it too. So I say, give it a chance before you make your verdict.

- Still to this day disappointed.

I am a huge fan of John, and when I first heard this album, I didn't really like it. So I've waited a while to see if it could grow on me and still to this day I don't think there is any variety in these songs. Most of them sound the same, except Crossroads, which is actually a cool rock/blues song on this album that I've grown to like, (This album is also missing the sexy blues riffs and solos that John had on Continuum). Sorry Johnny, but I'm NOT recommending this to anyone except people who like songs that are extremely poppy and don't sound to special. But John, your Paradise Valley album is Dynamite.

- Ew

Ok why is this thing under rock im prettg positive iv seen him sing many songs on the Disney channel!!! Yuck this album has such a gut renching gross sound!!!
