I Have Been A Fan Since Room 4 Squares, And Have All Other Cds Since, I Just Have 2 Say This Is His Best So Far. Faves Are Friends, Lovers Or Nothing,All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye And Edge Of Desire. Overall An Easy 5 Stars

- AWesome work John.

Hey - This album is great - I'm loving it already! Crossroads - WICKED!!! Can't wait to get on my guitar and figure out some of this stuff. Woo Hoo!

- 4/10 - a half baked effort, let me tell you why...

As a big fan of Continuum and all the JMTrio albums I was excited to hear about this new release from John Mayer. He is by far one of the best guitarists around (especially blues) but this is a pretty sub-standard bit of song writing and production. Steve Jordan, his drummer in JMTrio, is ok as a drummer but added zero value to the overall esthetic of this album. Being that JM is a control freak, my theory is JM purposely brings on sub-standard talent so he can tell them to march to HIS beat. I've enjoyed ad nauseaum all his other commercial releases but this is a departure in the wrong direction. The album has a handful of good songs; "who says" is a nice tune, although for the guitar-freak-in-me, it's the same regurgitated progression as "Stop This Train". Other decent tracks are "Heartbreak Warfare" (which will be his 2nd single) and the Coldplay-esque progression in "All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye". The 3rd track though lightly featuring Taylor Swift is AWFUL, POPPY, and uber commercial. Feels so Disney. I thought it was Miley Cyrus or something…yikes. I think JM will be ready to barf after touring this song in about 5 weeks. As a big blues fan, John has shown he isn't just some skinny white kid who can play an Eric Clapton cover but unfortunately he threw that reputation out the window when he played his over-produced, neutered version of Cream's classic, "Crossroads". It is so straight-edge it sounds like a robot is playing the main riff. WTF John? "Assassin" is another song that starts okay... It is an all new style JM is trying out. It features what new sounds like a Kimbala (a little thumb piano) and some ok lyrics. All is going well until the bridge. The transition musically is just wrong. I wasn't trained at Berklee College of Music like John but I guarantee he wasn't happy with how that sounds and everytime he hears it 5,10,30 years in the future, he will cringe. I know I do. Yech. The rest of the album isn't even worth talking about. It's dissapointing to come off an album with so many good tunes: "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room", "Gravity" and "Belief". So, in summary, wow, a JM album I don't like. Very odd. I can almost picture the meeting between JM and some cheesehead at Columbia. "John, the last album was a huge commercial success, you won a couple of grammy's for it but ya know you really outta tone down the bluesy feel a bit". John, I hope you will redeem yourself. I know you will. You are an amazing talent but sometimes it's better not to fix something that ain't broke. /SB/

- Disappointing

An album delving into self pity and lacking in the fresh and heartfelt aspects we are used to from John Mayer. As a fan with all the albums, I can say that John can do WAY better. He seems like he thinks his life is depressing and it's worth writing about that depression. I think he should grow up and return to his former songwriting brilliance. Highly disappointing album.

- Battle Studies has ALL of my heart :)

John Mayer delivers again with "Battle Studies." As the name suggests, the album is a commentary on the nature of relationships (a la "love is a battlefield") but it also demonstrates Mayer's artistic skill and willingness to take on a challenge. The sound is different from "Continuum," but when considered in relation to his other albums, "Battle Studies" seems like the natural evolution of Mayer's musical sound. In typical fashion, the lyrics balance poignant, sometimes comedic verses with simple, melodic choruses. Particularly impressive are "Heartbreak Warfare," "Half of my Heart," "Assassin," and "Edge of Desire." Buy, listen and enjoy!

- BEST ALBUM OF 09

This album ROCKS!??!?!?!?!?!? I don't know why people are saying this is crap compared to contuuum. Its atliste as good as Contuum, if not better. But if it didn't have the song Perfecly Lonely, the whole album would just sound dull and slow blues. (Perfecly Lonely gives it some freshness like Contuum. All the songs have awsome lyrics and Crossroads sounds almost as good as Creams version. Great:)

- What a shame.

First off, I'm a huge fan of John Mayer's music - especially his guitar playing, melodies and his early lyrics. Unfortunately, this album is a largely a let down. With the possible exception of "Who Says", the lyrics are rather painful. Who needs a whiney "love" song from him? How can you relate to a guy who dates and breaks-up with Aniston, Simpson, etc. only to write songs about how painful love is? Boo hoo, John. (PS, John even admitted to the instanity of this in one of his comedy videos last year.) As a big star, if he no longer has the insights that led to great songs like "Why Georgia", "Bigger Than My Body", "Back To You", "Neon" and "Home Life", he needs to take a break from the ladies and get back in touch with what made him tick. At least the melodies are generally better than the lyrics. Heartbreak Warefare and Assassin are decent tunes if you forget about the trashy lyrics that go with them. My final complaint is that this is generally a "soft" album. The tracks are all slow. You can just imagine the producers of the album pleading with John to come-up with something "zippy". Instead, we only get a cover of Crossroads. While a great cover, I would have liked to see something original in its place.

- Amazing

I have always been a JM fan and this has made me love him more. Every song is well thought-out and I love that it's a bit different than his past albums. Cannot wait to see him again live in 2010.

- Love it

John Mayer, you make us think more about what's going on in this world. Your music is moving and great to listen to!

- Too country, but still good.

I love John Mayer, I really do, and this is a great album, but I just don't like the country feel it has to it? It's a little to taylor swift-ish for me. But other then that it's great. John's an amazing artist and never fails to stun me with his work.

- Waste of time

I've been a big John Mayer fan, but there is nothing of interest on this album. On the first few albums the song writing was great - the songs were interesting musically and lyrically. I thinks he's one of the most talented artists to come along in a long time, and so I don't understand why he'd put this album out. It just seems like a complete waste of time. I don't get how you can go from "Room for Squares" and "Heavier Things" to this so quickly.

- John Mayer - Battle Studies

Quite different from his past albums (Continuum was phenomenal) and I wasn't sold on the first listen. BUT, it has definitely grown on me and remains in my SUV's CD-player for now. I appreciate when artists take a new direction ... it shows growth. Thank you John Mayer!

- Amazing

Amazing album, LOVE Assassin

- Always brilliant.

Amazing songs, once again. My favourites are: Assassin, Edge of desire, Half of my heart, Perfectly lonely, and Friends, lovers or nothing. If you like John Mayer you will love the lastest album.

- A little upset...

Not even close to touching how amazing his old stuff is...I really hope his next album is better than this one and at is at least on par with his old stuff...i am eagerly awaiting his next album!

- Not what I expected :(

When I heard the awesome single "Who Says" I was really excited to hear the album since its been three years since a studio album. But some songs aren't the John Mayer I was looking for. I listened to "Room For Squares' after I listened to the album and songs like "Why Georgia" and "My Stupid Mouth". It sounds like he tried harder to make the record sound better on those albums. But some songs are pretty good on this album like "All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye". Keep trying. :)

- Perfection.

John Mayer has matured as an artist delivering some of his best music yet! The best tracks in my opinion: Edge of Desire and Assassin. Edge of Desire promises to set you in a completely different mood, with poetic lyrics and a perfect melody the track is heatbreaking to listen to!

- We want the old John back

One of the things that I have always liked about John Mayer, was you could always see his blues roots, outside of another tired version of crossroads, which every blues star has tackled, he is now a main stream pop star and that's it. The skill and heart is gone, he is producing pop hits for the general public it is like drinking swill and no longer a vintage wine. Sorry John but you need to get back to what defined you in the early days.

- Leona should #1

Bad

- Mayer hasn't let me down :)

This is an amazing record to listen to. Very different from Continuum, but still as splendid to listen to. Mayer's songs never seize to amaze me :) Definately something you should purchase :)

- Copy

Heartbreak Warfare totally rips off Peace On Earth by U2. Still a good song though.

- Battle Studies

I was surprised by Battle Studies and it's slow, country twist. Very different from Continuum. I find the music in this album resembles itself and you seem to not notice every track passing because of the resemblance. I was a little disapointed. There are a few great tracks on it though. I think John is going in a very interesting direction with his musical styles and I believe that his net album will be amazing, since he has proved that he can truly play and perform any kind of music; from country to rock and even hip-hop (duo with Kanye West). I'm even more excited for his next work than I've ever been for any of his albums.

- Heavier Things Redux

I find it interesting to read that a lot of reviews are comparing Battle Studies to Heavier Things - an album that was, initially, a let down to me after the debut brilliance of Room For Squares - but 6 years later, HT is one of my favourite JM CDs - as I'm sure Battle Studies is also destined to become. Mayer's appeal is dichotomous - on one hand, a master craftsman of accessible, lyrically lush, melodically gratifying, acoustically grounded pop music; on the other, a wizard with an electric guitar, able to stop your heart with his prowess on the fretboard. Battle Studies falls into the former category of course - which is exactly where Mayer's studio work shines. While some are complaining there's no evidence of the "guitar god" on this CD, I've always found that the only way to experience this from him is either in live recordings, or the in the visceral experience of attending a live concert. So no disappointment here - another gem in a growing catalogue of superbly crafted songs. He's one of a dying breed, Mayer is - a throwback to another age, an old soul with an inherent talent, the likes of which is very rare these days in the music world.

- Great job once again!

This album has not been disapointing! All the songs are amazingly written and they are really catchy too. I will say though that his other stuff is better. This album is still great, but I think that continuum and room for squares are still better albums. I guess that he is definetly going in a different diredtion, but that is fine. Once again this album is truely amazing! My favourite songs are Heartbreak Warfare, and Assassin! They are all great really though!

- I love you <3

i lovelovelovelovelovelovelovelovelove it sooo much. eeeee i recommend it to anyone! Its just so complete so awesome, got the album before it came out and getting a pre-sale on the tickets. was it worth it? HECK YES IT WAS! soo amazing. love john mayer :) buybuybuy! eee!

- Maybe not what I expected!

After Try!, Continuum and Where The Light Is maybe thats not the album I was expecting but still have good songs and riffs. I think this album will rise up in concert with strip/ less arrangement/ produce song and the guitar bring back up front!

- A major letdown

I have had a whole hearted affinity for John Mayer for many years now. In the past I have found it refreshing to see a musician who plays what he wants, follows his muse. We the fans have witnessed him evolve from solely a pop guitarist to a bluesy soulful player. And i for one have loved the last few albums. But upon listening to his most recent offering, I was terrified to find that he has completely conformed to become your typical pop-synthesizer musician. His amazing guitar prowess is seldom heard on this completely uninspired attempt to seemingly mimic artists like Tyrone Wells and Train. But fear not fellow Mayer fans. I have not totally abondoned hope. I pray that John will again change his genre to something that better displays his prodigious talent as a singer songwriter.

- Wake Up!

All the people who are complain about this new CD are probably deaf or people who didn't quite make the music industry, therefore became a self proclaimed critic. John Mayer has brought something new to the table, he simply wanted to create a new sound and took his music writing to a different area. If you hopeless people expect the same sound from the artist then go to your nearest music store and purchase another copy of continuum. I love all the songs on this CD, they are all different but holds consistency in the theme. JM, no matter if it's his older material or this new album.. Amazing. If you don't have JM's back I do.

- Its hard to be awesome everytime.

I gotta hand it to John, he is a serious heavy hitter when it comes to song writing and musicianship. Since he broke nearly ten years ago hes done nothing but kill it! Odds would have that this record would not be the slam dunk that the rest of his career has been. So when you write your review go easy on him. He'll always be good. Great work John!

- NOT THE SAME OLD MAYER!!

Didn't know what to expect with this new album, more of the same came to mind, but it is anything from the same old John. Fun, different, upbeat and a great mixer of tunes. Well worth the wait and the price. Buy this album and enjoy!!!

- John Mayer reminds me of...

.... a luke warm cup of milk. And maybe rancid milk at that. Mayer is the perfect image for white boredome pop rock. Isn't this soft rock of the 21st century. Blech! Oh yes he's got the hooks and the slick image, but for anyone with even the most remote sense of adventure when it comes to music, this is completely uninspiring and about as exciting as a brown lawn. Boo!

- Give it a few listens, its amazing.

When I first listened to the album I was agreeing with other people when they said its just "blah". But if you give it a chance and listen to it a couple times all the way through, it might be my favourite album of his. Front to back (maybe minus 'Half of my Heart') is amazing. Any John Mayer fan will love this album.

- Different...still good

A little over three years of waiting, finally Battle Studies is here! It may not be the cd we've all expected but still has it's jems, the songs on this cd are sure to please JM fans. These songs may not be radio hits, but that makes them that much better in my eyes. Songs like 'Assassins' and 'Half of my heart' are unique, unlike other John Mayer songs.

- True Mayer fans will understand this album

The sound of this album is very reminiscent of "Heavier Things", which is definitely a good thing. As much as I loved the bluesy direction of Continuum and Where the Light Is, this album is very very refreshing. Some say its blah and boring....but kick back with the girlfriend/boyfriend/whoever with a sixpack of crispy cool beer, and you'll see that there is a lot of good stuff here that you can just nod your head to. "I'm on Fire" absolutely blew my mind. Take "Message in a Bottle" or "Free Fallin" and shove it. He has raised the bar again with an amazing cover.

- What a disapointment!

Wow... I'm stunned at how poor this album is. He had an opportunity to move up in the realm of some true heavy hitters but this falls short of even his second album which was easily the weakest to date. After Continuum I was eagerly anticipating this release but it seems with this one, either the lyrics or the arrangements on every track are weak and meaningless. Here's hoping he bounces back with the next one because this one sounds alot like an album created because the record company decided it was time for something new.

- Fresh but still John

JM finds a way to reinvent himself with every album. That's the difference between good and great. Another sound, another beautiful album.

- Great CD

No where comparable to Continuum but awesome album.
