Third best CONCORD I've heard. Aloys Kontarsky's is still the best by far,also still unavailable on cd , regrettably. Hamelin's is my second favorite. Denk's is the BEST first sonata I've heard to date.Nice job. It's easy to make a mish- mosh of these pieces-Denk creditably does not. As for the pieces themselves-if you don't know them,you really ought to. I came to Ives in the seventies from Zappa ,Stravinsky,Varese,Webern,Berg,Stockhausen,Maxwell Davies and Cage-what a great trip it was! Enjoy.

After trying to wrap my head around the music of Ives for years, Denk's stunning recording and entertaining and educational notes have parted the clouds. It's all here. The truly American melange of styles and moods are perfectly captured by Jeremy Denk's colorful playing. I have been hearing great things about Jeremy Denk for a while and he definitely delivers on this recording. His Concord Sonata is stunning and truly unique. He also gives us a brilliant interpretation of the under appreciated Sonata No. 1. Denk really gets Ives and his music. I look forward to hearing more from Denk in the future and hope he gets back into the studio soon.

These pieces by Ives are filled with power and grace. Denk's playing is note perfect; and at the same time, he shows us the beauty, the drama, and the fun of Ives's unique vision by bringing out the singing melodies at the heart of this piece. Check out "The Alcotts" (track 10) for a great example of this. I have heard the Concord sonata played many times before, but never been moved by it so much as here. This is an amazing album.
