Eric Clapton - Clapton

About Clapton by Eric Clapton Album

Co-produced by guitarist and long-time collaborator Doyle Bramhall II, ‘Clapton’ features an all star cast of musical collaborations started with the legendary JJ Cale, drummer Jim Keltner, bassist Willie Weeks, and keyboardist Walt Richmond - and the sessions later added guests including Steve Winwood, Wynton Marsalis, Sheryl Crow, Allen Toussaint, and Derek Trucks. Clapton created a collection that touches on everything from century-old traditional brass bands to little-known country blues to brand-new originals. The result is both relaxed and revelatory, and unlike anything the guitarist has done in his legendary career. ‘This album wasn't what it was intended to be at all,’ says Eric Clapton. ‘It's actually better than it was meant to be because, in a way, I just let it happen. It's an eclectic collection of songs that weren't really on the map - and I like it so much because if it's a surprise to the fans, that's only because it's a surprise to me, as well.’

- Good CD

Clapton is as good now as he was when he was young. Very good album...I especially like the bluesy ones. He's better than Paul McCartney (who is around the same age). I love Paul, but, he needs to retire. Rock on Clapton!!!

- its ok for his age

remember that hes 65 but some songs are Good and some are just plan bad

- At age 65, Clapton has "lost" it

This is, frankly... a bad album, with one may 2 songs that any redeeming value whatsoever. Much of the album is lazy and sounds like a bad Vegas lounge act. Clapton is 65 and he sounds 85

- It's Clapton...So Enjoy ...

I've followed EC from his stint in the Yardbirds ... to Mayall ... Delanny ... his solo career ... and so on ... around 9 or 10 concerts. To me, personally, it's not the lyrics ... It's his superb and amazing excellence of his guitar work ... He's, without question or debate, mastered his guitar and easily adapts to any style necessary to perform whatever piece he's chosen to play. This album shows the skill of a master at his craft. Did Clapton become 'lax or lazy' with this album? I don't think so ... listen more closely ... It's Clapton ... so enjoy.

- Slowhand has found the key.

I absolutely love this album. Eric has mellowed to such a relaxed and comfortable place. He no doubt has found happiness and true love in his life. It has heart, soul and most of all truth. I really like the different styles and choices he has chosen for this endeavor. I must admit, I've been a fan for a very long time and have seen him go down some dark and lonely roads. It's such a pleasure to hear that all that seems to be far behind him. He is truly an artist for the ages. He doesn't need the screaming guitar leads to supply his emotions. Kudos, Eric. You have surely come home. The key to the highway has led you to a wonderful edition of your mastery. And the title is perfect. Need it say anymore?

- Full of Soul

Any recent concert-goer can attest to the fact that Clapton is an amazing performer and musician. However, Clapton is a solo artist and has been for some time - expecting to press play and hear a Cream or Blind Faith album is an unfortunate mistake for any listener. His respect for the talents of other musicians is displayed by the many contriubutors on this album and is a testament to Clapton's ability to bring his own soul to any undertaking. The tracks beautifully showcase his roots in the Blues and give us an album quite unlke any in his catalog. The flowing pace won't give you the rock excitement of Layla or Crossroads, but will absolutely confirm that Clapton cares first and foremost about the music, the soul, the feeling - and he doesn't disappoint.

- Amazing

It's October 2010 and I'm sitting here listening to new, excellent Eric Clapton music...Life is good! Thanks Eric!

- solid and intriguing; not for everyone

People seem to have a very strange idea of what “mellow” means. Apparently if you don’t solo like it’s 1973, you’re boring. But I really got into Clapton listening to Unplugged and Me and Mr Johnson, so this album makes sense to me in line with those others. "Travelin' Alone" makes a good way to start a car ride. “Can’t Hold Out Much Longer” has that heavy blues drag: slow tempo but not soft. “River Runs Deep," despite the underlying violence of the lyrics, is totally hypnotic. You can listen to it on loop. And Clapton's version of Autumn leaves is heartbreaking. If you consider that “boring” I don’t know what to do for you. The showtunes aren’t my favorites, but it’s interesting that he manages to make them his own, effectively introducing them to people whose only knowledge of Irving Berlin might be “God Bless America.” The Bottom Line: It’s not the heaviest or most virtuoso Clapton, and not every track is essential. But if you really like music, not just uptempo chords to get drunk to, then it deserves a good listen and more than a “this song is so old…” yo mama joke.

- Clapton

A little mellow for my taste but hey it's still Clapton

- Clapton back to his roots -- pure blues album

For blues lovers who love clapton and visa versa this is an amazing album This is Eric circa 1965-1967 going back to the Bluesbreakers era where he was truly a blues man. Here he tones down the marshall and les paul combo and instead goes for a vareity of blues styles: Chicago esque muddy waters, and John Lee Hooker and also even goes delta blues, acoustic and even some ragtime. I give the album 4 stars as not every track is for me - ie I am not a ragtime fan. Travelin alone and I was fooled are standout blues classics that sound like they could have been recorded forty years ago. On top of this Clapton's riffs, soul and voice are outstanding. He is back to his roots and sounds fantastic. Think old time blues. WHO SHOULD NOT BUY THIS? If you like the standard Clapton styles (only): blistering guitar leads of his Cream Daze (Crossroads, White Room, his classic jj cale covers of the 70's (after midnight, cocaine) or the poppy jingle of the 80's clapton (pe Pretending)... this WONT be for you.

- Very, very good,,,,4.5 stars

Yes, it is mellow. But that doesn't mean that isn't very good. Really good, in fact. Think of it as Clapton's response to what T Bone Burnett did with Robert Plant and Allison Krauss. It is in a similar vain, except with a much lighter hand on the production side. Clapton does a really nice job of giving each song exactly what is called for, nothing more and nothing less. Just because the guy can rip doesn't mean he should. As tasteful as anything Clapton has done in a long, long time. Well done, Sir Eric.

- El Snooze-o

After sampling the tunes and reading the reviews, I'm fortunate to have saved myself 12 bucks. Clapton continues his slide into irrelevance with this latest disappointment. For the Clapton fanatics he can do no wrong and, of course, they'll say I'm off base for not having listened to the album in its entirety. But this is merely the latest example of his transition into the "easy listening" genre. For us non-fanatics, he continues to offer effective cures for insomnia like this pillow-friendly collection. At least it's cheaper than a visit to the doctor and a prescription for Xanax. I'm virtually the same age as this guy, have enjoyed his music since the Yardbirds, but haven't heard anything inspiring or engaging since From The Cradle. I still hope against hope with every new studio release that he'll match some of his earlier studio stuff or live works, like the Madison Square Garden teamup with Stevie Winwood two years ago. Afer having enjoyed listening to that gem just a few weeks ago and then sampling this newest one, the contrast is astounding. This album should be relegated to the dinner hour at every nursing home in America. It'll help with digestion. I'm a grandpa but I'm still rockin' and rollin'...I just wish Eric was, too. Save your money, folks.

- This is the stuff

I think it's pretty awesome to see how he's grown musically into even more jazz and gospel elements in his music...not to mention his love for the blues. This is a great album and really highlites what a great musician Clapton is.

- still rocking

Clapton seems to wow me with every song, this album takes a slitly diffrent approch then some in the past, But its right where Clapton belongs. He tones down the volume and still keeps the rock and role going, with class.

- Just not there

I know it's not the 70's no more and Eric has put out some great songs but this album just don't have no meat left on the bone. the worst EC album ever.

- Uuughhh

EC I will agree is probably the greatest guitar player ever. This is a work of an old man. The only thing this album is good for is a nice long nap!! Totally painful. Zzzzzzzz

- Good god

What have I been missing.

- This made me SO HAPPY

This is the first new, good album I've gotten in probably half a year. It's really, really good. The one thing is that it feels a little "over-produced" which conflicts with the typical Clapton feel...kinda. Clapton really has maintained his typical bluesy twist to everything and there's really creative solos (like you'd expect anything less from this guitar god). My one problem is that I still don't like Clapton's vocals that much. They're like Bob Dylan's vocals; they're really unique, but that's no excuse for not training the vox so that they sound better. Clapton also does a really nice remix of the jazz standard Autumn Leaves, but my personal favorite track of this album is My Very Good Friend the Milkman or Diamonds Made from Rain.

- Listen to some of his Blues, Unplugged and drop it down on one level, and raise it up on another.

Covers of some songs and some of his own with some great Musicians adding into the work. Has he gotten better? I think he's expanded his abilities. Abilities that he's always had, but that he's exploring (or maybe just sharing now.) in his older years. Being 46 I've been listening to his music since I first heard him playing and singing. All I can say, is thank's Eric for all of the pleasures I've had listening to (and experimenting I did with my own guitars until I was wounded in the military) but you'll be missing out if you like his music and don't get this album.

- Disappointed

I'm a huge Clapton fan & a fan of many genres & styles of music (VERY open-minded). All I can say about this album is it's well produced, high quality music. It's just NOT what you want when you buy an Eric Clapton album. He has the right as an artist to record whatever he wants, so props to him for doing something different. I'm just not a fan of this album. Has maybe 2 or 3 songs I will keep on my iPod. The rest will just stay "in storage" on my computer.

- He still has it!

Wow is how I can describ this album he did an a,azing job for being 65 on of his best i think even tho he had several best

- Don't ever stop!

The man is a genius and he keeps making quality stuff. This album is no exception. I love the smooth blues; it's an awesome selection of tunes. A great contrast to "From the Cradle"

- New album

Mr. Clapton is like a bottle of good wine; it just keeps getting better!!

- NOTHING HERE WORTH BUYING

SAVE YOUR MONEY...

- Eric Clapton

As the question below is asked still good at 65, Eric Clapton is a fine aged wine, it can only get better and Mr. Clapton does it with Class and grace, namaste'

- Clapton

Love this album!!!!!!!!!!

- Ever Evolving Eric

I'm a huge Clapton fan and I am always glad to hear new music from him, even if it is "old" music and played his way on this new release. I strongly dissagree with the negative reviews here. Those who just want to hear him blasting a lead guitar constantly and hearing the old three chord progression from EC, have just not grown-up musically. EC constantly plays either live, with other artists or solo. He plays his heart out at live shows and takes time to craft any new release, unlike some artists who release crap year after year. I really think he deserves a lot of credit for staying in the game so long. God know's he sure doesn't have to. He plays for the love of it. Just as he did so long ago starting out.

- Very well done!!!!!!!

I think a guy who has been everywhere and back with his history has the right to make a record like this and it pays off! Great guitar tone through out and respectful to the music that influenced him in his roots!

- Too Mellow

As a very Big EC fan, I have to say that this is a major dissapointment. The production is excellent but nothing sticks out as a great song. Fantastic talent is wasted. maybe in the future I will like it better. I bought it to complete the collection but if you do not collect Clapton this is a waste.

- WOW

One of the best albums to come out in the last few years. Great diversity of song selections and a great lineup of musicians!

- Clapton

I have seen him live more times than I can count over 40 year. Eric Clapton remains as the greatest guitar player on the planet. Even B.B. King has said, "he can play the blues better than most of them out there." Keep'em comin' Eric.

- Clapton

Totally love this album!!

- clapton

I've been listening to eric since the '60's. Always been a big fan. Hey, It's Eric Clapton! But, no offense; sounds like just another 65yr old guy past his prime. One word comes to mind on this album - yawn..... does he have anything musically to say anymore? not to me. Same way with Dylan's latest album. sounded like the guy just needs another paycheck and is operating off the fact that he still has a marquis name. Musically, songs like 'Autumn Leaves' just bore me to death because Eric is not a crooner, or a jazz artist. Do we have to listen to some more old rock guys butcher the standards? The worst I've ever heard was Steven Tyler with the Boston Pops singing "Smile" I cringe and have to shut if off it's so bad. Steven can't sing, he never could; songs like "Walk This Way" he can get away with - it's rock. But please, don't try and get up and do a duet with Andre Bocelli. hahahaha Eric can do whatever he wants, he's a rock legend - my favorite guitar solo will always be him doing "Crossroads" from the 60's. awesome improv with him and Bruce and Baker. But, this kind of album just bores me to death. time to retire....I've seen him 50 times, who cares?? If you can't kick it anymore, time to let the young-bloods have the stage..... move over old man....

- Clapton

Clapton is album with few real surprises. If you've followed his career (as I have since Mayall), you see the slowing of the gears as he enters old age. He's refined and minimalized both his vocal and guitar chops, all the while becoming more confident and relaxed in the process. Being a guitarist myself, I always wait for him to unleash one of his soaring solos, but that's probably not going to happen any time soon. His playng here is sporadic and lovely at the same time...always leaving you wanting more. The tunes are soulful and hypnotic and the production is straight out of the Rick Rubin handbook. Thanks, Eric, a truly fine effort!

- Clapton still has it

First listen to this album I didn't enjoy as much as I thought I would, not because it was bad but because I wanted it to rock harder. After listening to it a few times I cant get enough. And for anyone who says Clapton has lost it obviously hasn't seen him perform live recently. Guy still plays the guitar like no other. Claptons like a fine wine... just keeps getting better with age. I'd say this is his "old man" album, but its a sick one nonetheless. They dont call Clapton god b/c hes a chump. They call him God b/c thats what he is!

- How did this NOT sweep the Grammys

I've joked about my taste in new music... Toby Keith... Little Big Town... but seriously, is it so wrong to like Clapton?

- Too bad

I have every album Clapton has ever done. This is the only one I wish I never got. Too bad. He is a legend and in my opinion one of the greatest artists of all time but this album was a huge let down

- SOME PEOPLE JUST DON'T GET IT

this is a great GREAT album . i have listened to it just about non stop since i bought it . its NOT 1972 anymore. eric has matured and this is a mature piece of work . yeah its NOT layla . the songs are great , the performances are great . i LOVE this album and if you like good music you will too .

- Incredible

Two words: Slowhand's Back.

- EC is God! (Live on Stage)

It may even be a good production, but it's too boring like most of his "studio records" since the 90s'. Definetly not the EC we see on stage!! Not EC i like to listen!

- Clapton at his best

EC has really stepped out of established patterns on this one, and the result is pretty much what you'd expect of a master who can, and sometimes will, take a chance with his audience. This collection contains much of what most listen to Clapton for, and like any of his guitar-playing fans, I never tire of it... he always gets me off. Over the years, as I have listened to Clapton's guitar, something else has caught my ear... there is no doubt that Clapton is a great singer, and maybe on this batch of tunes, he felt he could lay back enough on his audience, and trust the groove to carry the tune... this is Clapton singing as well as anyone does, and it's a very gratifying sound. I read some other reviewer saying "Clapton has gone Rod Stewart on us..." referring to Stewart's (excellent) 'songs-of-the-past' outing(s). Stewart, on those recordings, especially the first, sported an A-team ensemble of big-band style players, and spirited arrangements, and that was cool. The difference with Clapton on "How Deep is the Ocean" is that it sounds unmistakably Clapton, while honoring the tone of the tune. A cop-out? Try it yourself (if you are a singer) and see how it comes out! Needless to say, the rockin' bluesy stuff is as good as ever, after all, Clapton invented this corner of the world singlehandedly, and there is no doubt he still owns it. All in all, a really terrific album... I love them all, even the sort-a lame ones. If you haven't given Clapton a listen for a while, this is a real good place to drop in. Bruce (BB) Bouck

- Buy this

You can't go wrong with this album!!!

- Great blues the real thing. The genius Clapton is here

I read the negative reviews and found it hard to fathom. I admit to liking the big hits as a rule.It takes me a few times hearing a song till it starts to grow and then I may buy it. Very rare for me listening to new songs I haven't heard much and buying an album full. When I previewed this collection I loved them all and bought it. The blues and popular songs can be separated by a fine line some times. This was written as a back to the roots blues piece of work. Clapton has gone on for years trying to find homes, Cities, and companions designed to get him in a frame of mind and creativity he thinks he needs. Nothing new about this. Can't wit to listen and hope for more.

- He seems to be content with it all

It's just where he is today: taking it easy, and why not. And he's smart to realize HE doesn't have to be the center of it all (in the studio) anymore. I really hope he's having fun. Having some good times with close friends and trusted musicians--is a pretty good way to make a living. Nice set Clapton and company. I gladly pay for the good things. This is good. Thanks.

- Sorry - Not this time.

Move along, please. Nothing to see, here. In a word - TIRED!!!

- Keeps getting better

I absolutely love this album, one of Eric's best to date. I've been in a blues mood for listening for the past few years digging up old classic blues and some new blues as well. This Album satisfies my blues and also gives a refreshing break from the blues with songs likeMy Very Good Friend the Milkman and When Somebody Thinks Your Wonderful. Both keep an older simpler style that takes a break from the blues.

- Clapton still has it

Like others who grew up on EC's guitar work, I was a little surprised at this latest collection - but just keep listening. It grows on you and now I wish I had more like "Autumn Leaves"

- He never ceases to amaze!!!

First of all people should not be able to write reviews after listening to the samples. I've been listening to this album for two days straight and in my opinion this is won of his best. The different styles, the since that this guy can play whatever he wants and make it fabulous. It really has the feel of a bunch of friends getting together in a studio and just having fun. Do yourself a favor. Buy this album, throw away your preconceived notions of what Clapton should be and just appreciate the genius of a master musician doing what he loves to do!!!

- Beautiful album

Right back to the roots, ad fontes, the blues, and he does it so well! Thanks for a great album!
