The album blows..... The heads off of girls don't support this guy.
This guy killed a man, and his music is weird and he wears his sunglasses too high on his nose
Forget all the whining...just let this be exactly what it is...GREAT! I hope Phil Spectre gets the money from this music. So his estate can keep this really great music alive. To the ones that say ..."duh...didn't he just kill someone"? Yes, he did...however...THAT IS A DIFFERENT FORUM! OH and to the ones that say...."why would anyone want to support a murderer"?...same to you....THAT IS ANOTHER FORUM!!! This is the place where we appreciate the good things that someone has done. If you don't want to post something nice, THEN KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT, didn't your mama teach you that if you can't say something nice, to not say anything at all? PHIL SPECTRE created so much really great music. Geez, Darlene Love can still be watched every Christmas week live one night only to sing her traditional Phil Spectre Christmas song! It's amazing...it was amazing then, it's still amazing now, even more so because it's 50 years later, and people are still listening to this really great music.
Great Compilation. Awesome Sound..But where is "He Hit me and it Felt like a Kiss" .. You can`t have a Phil Spector greatest hits without that song.Still a great set of songs.
Although I'm sure that Phil's music was and is great, why would anybody at this point make more money for him or his estate?!?!? If there is new money to be made from his music, shouldn't it go to his victim's family???
For those who want a concise sampler of the work of producer Phil Spector, this album will satisfy your needs. He has brought us some of pop's greatest songs, and they are perfectly showcased here. The one question that crosses my mind, however, is which one is the greatest: The Ronettes' still-magical masterpiece "Be My Baby" or Tina Turner's outstanding musical explosion "River Deep - Mountain High." Listen to the entire album but pay attention specifically to these two cuts - they are the cream of the crop.
Yes, he's quite possibly insane. Does that make the music he was involved with less amazing? Absolutely not! Phil's output during the 60's is truly essential listening and his 'Wall of Sound' one of 20th century pop culture's high points!
does anyone know where the proceeds go? If phil spector receives it, cannot and will not purchase. even though the songs are great!
In the lull between the primordial spark of ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll and the ‘60s echo brought by the British Invasion, Phil Spector reinvented the pop single. He broke into the music industry in the late ‘50s with his group, The Teddy Bears, and subsequently elevated the stature of “record producer” with his unique Wall of Sound methods. Starting in New York, and eventually decamping to Los Angeles, Spector’s fame eclipsed that of his artists. Though the Ronettes and Crystals got star billing, and the A-list studio players got their historic due as the Wrecking Crew, these singles have collectively become known as “Phil Spector records.” And given Spector’s reclusive lifestyle and his 2009 incarceration, the records are more than ever his public legacy. This 19-track collection samples the key years, 1962-66, during which Spector produced for his own Philles label. With the Philles catalog now in the licensing hands of Sony Legacy and EMI, the fiftieth anniversary of the label’s 1961 founding is being celebrated with a new round of reissues. Alongside this remastered collection of Spector’s hits are collections for the Ronettes, Crystals and Darlene Love. This set stretches from the Crystals’ and Philles’ first single, 1961’s “There’s No Other (Like My Baby),” through the 1966 release whose chart failure is reported to have broken Spector’s heart, Ike & Tina Turner’s “River Deep, Mountain High.” In between are key sides from the Ronettes, Darlene Love, Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans, Righteous Brothers and more from the Crystals, gathering together all of the label’s Top 40 singles except for three mid-60s releases by the Righteous Brothers. This is a great look at the peaks, both commercial and artistic, of Spector’s run at Philles. It’s missing the warm-up act of pre-Philles sides with Ray Peterson, Gene Pitney, Curtis Lee and the Paris Sisters, as well as Spector’s comeback work in the ‘70s and 80s, but as a single disc overview of the Wall of Sound, and given the per-track royalty model for U.S. releases, it’s hard to argue with the choices. To reach deeper into the Phil Spector and Philles catalogs, to hear B-sides, album tracks and the few non-charting Philles singles, seek out the individual artist collections being issued in parallel, dig up a copy of the out-of-print box set Back to Mono, or spring for the imported Phil Spector Masters. This isn’t the vault archaeology that fans seek, and many will complain about the mono line-up (all except “River Deep”), but it is a welcome overview of one of pop music’s greatest auteurs. Phil is gone...died of Covid in prison...but his music will live on. A twisted tormented genius.
I like to think the latest mastering technicians have an ear for authenticity, however, so we hear these songs in a new light. With each one going for $0.99 you have quite a steal, although some would say Ike & Tina provide the cream of the crop, which appears Album Only at this time and place. I do not know anything about Darlene Love so I learn more this way and good Lord, you would do better to buy this than tickets to _Baby, I Love You_ on Broadway.
I don't care that Spector murdered. I only care that "river deep - mountain high is a great musical masterpiece made long before he killed anyone and I want it badly. trouble is although I tunes lists the album, you can't actually buy it. you can buy most individual cuts but R D M H is only available by buying the entire album which can't be bought. I can only assume someone at I tunes agrees that Spector was crazy only during the creation of that particular song. so don't be hypocritical; come out and say it or take it off I tunes if you won't sell it. I want an answer.
Didn't this guy kill someone.....I would never support this low life
First of all, I think it's a bit distasteful that Phil Spector's face is plastered on the cover. Obviously the collection needs his name on it to sell, but there's enough constant reminder that he's attached to this. It's a bit insensitive to the victim's friends and family as well. That was a very bad call. As for the music itself, you're not going to hear pop music that is this gorgeous ever again. The vocal groups, The Wrecking Crew (the backup band), and the Wall of Sound production technique were used to create some of the most awe inspiring recordings of all time. This is about as good as it gets folks. These 19 tracks are some of the most timeless recordings ever, with seemingly everything going against them. Some of these tracks are pushing 50 years old, and they're attached to the name of a murderer. Yet they sound just as fresh, happy, bouncy, and beautiful as they did when Spector first pressed that "Back to Mono" button (due in part to some nice remastering). Buy this collection if you enjoy good pop music. These really are timeless pieces. Also, a reviewer was asking about "River Deep, Mountain High". It's the final track, and it's there in all its glory. :)
Phil Spector Is A Murderer but he is also insane! That does not change the fact that he changed the way music sounds today.
hope funds go to the victims family
Don't give this murderer money!
"River Deep, Mountain High" is on the CD. Not here? Anybody?

Bought this album, which included the Christmas album. Suddenly most of the songs disappeared from my playlist & now the definitive collection is not available on iTunes. Whilst I appreciate that iTunes still own the songs even when you’ve paid for them, it leaves a bad taste when you are forced to pay twice (at least) for the same songs. A distasteful business practice.
No Reviews! This man is up there with George Martin and Berry Gordy. Every track on this album pretty much a masterpiece, this is a big chunk of popular music history as much as Motown, The British Invasion of The US in the 60's, through to Bowie and then Punk. Yet nobody has left a review? I dispair. Buy this AND the Christmas album.
