you can't get it wronger than the itunes review. That is if you re a fan. This is the folksy pre-growl tom waits. not so easy to fit in the box, so they're not in the greatest hits. so don't put it in that box. there's 6 or 7 classics that you'll love, it's more than the sum of its parts. and it's a real insight into the guy's roots. truly beautiful

This is one of my favorite albums, there really isn't any filler on this. Tom Waits earlier stuff is my favorite, so these stripped, low down bluesy songs are like heaven. You have everything that makes Waits awesome- the humor, the stark sadness, and he even gives us some amazing love songs (Little Trip to Heaven is my favorite track, it's just incredible. If you call yourself a Tom Waits fan, you must own this. If you're a newcomer wanting to hear what hes all about- this is the perfect starting place. A timeless, genius album that I'll treasure until I die.

I will say that sometimes it's hard to realize that this is the Tom Waits that we hear today. But that dose not take away from the fact that this is great stuff..... Not just for Tom Waits fans.

i can't say that i agree with the review posted here. though many people may be surprised by the bluesy, one man show feel of this album, it is by no means sub-standard. taken on its own merits, away from the tom waits' catalog, it contains good, solid, bare-bones blues ("Goin' Down Slow") with a Waits twist ("Looks Like I'm Up S**t Creek Again", "So Long I'll See Ya"). no, this is not an album for those who look for more of the "concept" Waits, but those seeking good, drinkin' alone at 4 am tunes.
