LINKIN PARK - A Thousand Suns

About A Thousand Suns by LINKIN PARK Album

A Thousand Suns is the fourth studio album by American rock band Linkin Park. It was released on September 8, 2010, under Warner Bros. Records. The album was written by the band, while production was handled by Linkin Park vocalist Mike Shinoda and Rick Rubin who previously worked together to produce the band's third studio album Minutes to Midnight (2007). Recording sessions for the album took place at NRG Recording Studios in North Hollywood, California from 2008 until early 2010. A Thousand Suns is a multi-concept album dealing with human fears such as nuclear warfare. The band has acknowledged that the album is a drastic departure from their previous work, as they experimented on different and new sounds for A Thousand Suns. Shinoda stated in an interview with MTV that the album references numerous social issues, as well as blending human ideas with technology. The album's title comes from the Hindu Sanskrit scripture, the Bhagavad Gita: "If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the mighty one," a quote made famous by J. Robert Oppenheimer in reference to the atomic bomb, which references the numerous apocalyptic themes of the album. The lead single for the album, "The Catalyst", was sent to radio and released to digital music retailers on August 2, 2010. "The Catalyst" peaked at the Billboard Alternative Songs and Rock Songs charts, as well as reaching #27 at the Billboard Hot 100 upon the album's release. Three more singles were released to promote the album, namely "Waiting for the End", "Burning in the Skies" and "Iridescent". "The Catalyst" and "Waiting for the End" have been both certified gold by the RIAA. The band promoted the album through the A Thousand Suns World Tour from October 2010 to September 2011. Upon release, the album was met with positive reviews, but it polarized critics and fans over the band's new direction. Despite this, the album has been a commercial success debuting at number one on over ten charts. The album has been certified gold by the RIAA on February 2011 and has sold 840,000 copies in the United States as of April 2012.

- So fricking awesome

I feel like most of the people who are hating this album are hardcore death metal fans or people who only listened to clips of the songs because there’s no way you can hate on how beautiful this album is. It is absolutely amazing and flows in such a great way, while meteora and hybrid theory showed how great linkin park is, a thousand suns really proved that linkin park is a band that genuinely cares about what they put out. How dare people call them sell outs when they take risks like these (making a concept album) because they want to experiment and show evolution. If anything they deserve more praise and respect. The album is fantastic and I personally love Robot Boy which is serveerly underrated. It is very peaceful and speaks to me for some reason it’s actually my favorite song of all time so yeah. Definely worth a buy or at least a listen.

- Under-rated

This is their most underrated album. As a whole it stutters in place but has some really great stuff if you give it a chance.

- One of My Favorite Albums of All Time

I remember how obsessed I was with this record 2 years ago, I could see why people hate it & love it. It is an album that is far from perfect, but still very underrated. The story is clear & amazing, the music might have been more electronic than nu metal but I can see why this album is shows an electronic side. Me personally, this album is my favorite Linkin Park record of all time. This is the album that got me into more concept records, & it's a sound that I fell in love with. Ssay what you want about this album, but it's underrrated to me.

- The Greatest

I love it!

- A Thousand Suns, A Thousand Words

When this album debuted back in 2010, I was a Junior in high school and something about it just connected with my soul and psyche in a way that I could not stop listening to it for a month straight. LP is my favorite band of all time and I was very glad this album came out after Minutes to Midnight, a great album, but not one of my favorites by LP. Regardless, every track on this album, a concept album, is great and will take you on a journey.

- The Worst Linkin Park Album

Every Linkin Park album (except One More Light) has that awesome electronic-hard rock sound. Even One More Light, a pop and pop rock album has good songs like good goodbye and talking to myself but this album sounds terrible and has no good songs.

- This will be recognized someday

I realize it's not your usual LP. Some bands can't get away with stepping away from screaming for 12 tracks. Chester and Mike knew what they were doing here. This album is a work of genius. It will always be my favorite from them.

- RIP Chester

Thank you for being the voice of a generation. LP might not have been critically acclaimed, but they were beloved by tens of millions around the world. A Thousand Suns was their most dividing work when it came out. It marked a stylistic departure from previous releases, but this album is still their most special to me. Thank you for giving us so much wonderful music LP.

- Not my fav one from them but still awesome

Wretches and Kings is definitely my favorite in this album!

- Okay

I listened to Linkin Park's album Black Sun for the first time in almost 4 years today. Honestly, I can't believe I ever loved this album. I mean, it's not terrible but it's nowhere near as great as I said it was when it came out. I'm not even nostalgic for it. All I think of is how divided the fan base was when it came out. It's not terrible though. It's got some real stinkers on it, but if this was the sound track for a semi realistic nuclear apocalypse movie, I think I might like it more. On one hand, I feel like they really wanted to impress they had grown up w their audience, or they tried to challenge their audience and maybe even new audiences by using more aggressive swearing more frequently. It just comes off as incredibly forces and childish. It's like when they kid on the playground starts swearing to impress the older kids. It's just stupid, and dumb, and breaks any amount of flow that was had up to that point. On the other hand this album has a few really solid tracks. I really like the interludes a lot, and on the really stellar tracks it seems like the whole band is just having a great time together, like Waiting for the End or Blackout. Even the music videos for those songs are really solid and fun to watch. All this said I can't harp on them too much. I feel obligated to respect them in some sense as they're one of the few bands from the 90's/00's era that's still together that still seems like they're still having fun. Overall 2/5 A few good tracks and interesting interludes are ultimately spoiled by a sloppy lyrics and a general lack of musical flow within the tracks.

- No no no

I'm sorry guys I thought Linkin Park was a Rock band. Back in my day there was a METAL band called LINKIN PARK!!! You guys should look them up.

- Wretches and Kings

Even though this might not be their best album they have some great songs on it such as the bass heavy Wretches and Kings, when they come for me and waiting for the end

- A Thousand Suns Review

A Thousand Suns is a great album because I love all of the tracks that was in this album and I love all albums that LINKIN PARK has done.

- One of their best

As much as i love every song waiting for the end is my top favorite

- Favorite LINKIN PARK Album

This has to be my favorite LINKIN PARK album. Meteora comes in close second but i think i have to say this is the BEST thing they have put out so far. This is an album that makes you think and wonder. It has speeches from well known figures and just sounds so interesting as a whole. The best thing about it i would have to say is how each song connects to the next. THATS what an album is supposed to do and what its supposed to sound like. Everything in this is new, fresh, and full of variety. Its truly inspiring and one of the most creative and mature out of all LINKIN PARKS albums. Thank you guys for putting all the hard work into this and giving us an amazing work of art.

- Evolution

This is a great album. The only reason people are hating on this album is because it's different and not like LINKIN PARK's old sound. It adds more electronic elements and less rock/rap. The only problem I have with A Thousand Suns is all of the unnecessary interludes that come in between the songs. Despite the fact that the interludes fill up half the album, there are lots of great songs. Some examples of these are Burning In The Skies, When They Come For Me, Wretches and Kings, Blackout, Waiting For The End and The Catalyst. If you just skip the interludes, you'll be enjoying one of LINKIN PARK's most underrated albums.

- Ahead of its time. Experimental.

This album takes you on a beautiful journey thanks to its seamless transitions and subject matter. 11 years later, this album holds up extremely well. I definitely did not appreciate the album as much when it came out. The versatility of the band is on full display here. Highlights: Waiting for the End, Iridescent, The Catalyst, The Messenger. These songs can hold their own against any Linkin Park songs from Hybrid Theory or Meteora.

- Linkin Park's worst, but still good

I gotta admit this is their worst album. It's actually only 9 tracks, 6 of these tracks are preludes/interludes. But the band continues to evolve their sound and change things up with electronic rock. At first I wouldn't go near this album due to the pre/interlude tracks. They are actually scary/haunting as hell to listening. But then again the idea of this is the nuclear war so the idea is be spooked by the ominous interludes. The songs tho ain't that bad, some are interesting for the band using drum sets like When They Come for Me and Blackout. Irredesent is also a really beautiful track too. Sometimes when I'm a dark place makes me cry, it's prelude, Wisdom Justice And Love, it the most haunting track on this album with MLK's robot echoing voice. But still not bad LP.

- Blackout

Blackout is truly an amazing song, representing the aggressive and passive sides of the band. I personally have enjoyed Minutes to Midnight and A Thousand Suns. Although the band’s style has changed, I think it’s a welcome change.

- I love it

Like all the songs and catalyst is my favorite. God bless us eveyone

- WAY different, but still (mostly) good

A few tracks were boring, and the sounds were strange in a few ways, but overall this is still a great album. Way to keep the consistency.

- Lift me up, Let me go

Terribly underrated album. Sure, it's not the same sound as their first two albums, but it's just as good. "Robot Boy" is so beautiful.

- Not the best

This is a alright cd. LP has done better then this. But overall they were trying a new sound that's fine. But if it doesn't work you go back to your normal genre. That's what this cd is saying. Go back to the other sound. This didn't really work.

- A little yummy

Yum)()):):))/)-))/).)(/,)).?

- HAPPY 10th 🎉

Years later, this album is still incredible. 🎶

- Beautiful

Great concept album

- SERIOUSLY ewwwee Sss za

Suitor dSszZZze,eSea w se seeswaeasccxjvzve

- Not for Me

I didn't like it when it came out, and still don't. Catalyst and Blackout are the only songs I like.

- Great

I listened to this recently, for the first time in a few years, and I actually really liked it.

- Eh.. not very good

Honestly , only a few select songs were decent , unlike they're other albums this one I wasn't feeling at all

- Black out

It’s crazier than heck!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

- An experiment that failed!!!

Quite possibly the most boring album they ever made. Too many pointless stupid interludes and intermissions, and awkward boring direction. I almost fell asleep.

- No words.

The catalyst has remained my favorite song for the past 6 years. Everytime the song comes on I tell everyone to be quiet. Its the type of song that makes you realize what music could be.

- Maybe I’m in the minority here

This might possibly be my favorite album of all time by LP. Absolutely love “Waiting for the end” and “Iridescent.”

- The best album

Listen to the emotion poured into these tracks and the concept it puts across. The fear of nuclear fallout...human fears in general and the hope to rise above it. God, this album is wonderful!

- Great album

Btw the song,”wretches and Kings” is explicit.

- 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

🔥💯🍦

- Sell outs

Yep. Still crap

- May be their best album

My opinion on this is probably a lone one and that's okay. I love old and new Linkin Park. This album doesn't totally abandon old sounds, but mainly focuses on a single concept (hence the reasoning for all the filler "noise" tracks). Would I put those songs on my iPod? No. But would I buy the entire album just to listen to it all the way through to get the full experience? YES!! Absolutely yes! This album is not for the casual listener; it is for the ones ready and willing the experience something unique and interesting compared to all the pop crap, and derivative rock that is too scared to try something new.

- Try to Catchup Mo-Fo's

I really love this album. It is not the kind of album you'd expect from Hybrid Theory or Meteora. However like always, the band knows how to make breathtaking music, no matter which genre or what sound. What's so awesome about this album that like the previous albums, this one does a good job of trying to raise awareness of what's going on or what has happened in the real world. Only the purpose of this album is much bigger because it mainly focuses on history, constant wars and the regrets of the nuclear bomb and how much destruction it can cause if we continue to lose to ourselves. If you're a true LP fan and you understand this album really well, It feels like this album has a story because if you listen to the intro (The Requiem/Radiance)and the last 5 songs, WJL/Iridescent and Fallout kinda represent the rising action and The Catalyst represents the climax. After that it comes to an calm, acoustic resolution which is "The Messenger". Overall, I love this so much. This is my 3rd favorite Linkin Park album total...but my #1 favorite Linkin Park album outside the HT/Meteora sound. Linkin Park is capable of lot of genres and I'm proud of the bravery that had, and the risks that they took. I recommend this album to die hard, open minded music lovers. LP4L

- Worth listening to, but kind of lazy

The album is worth listening to for sure, and I would buy it in a hearbeat if I didn't have it, but it contains a lot of crap and redos of the same thing. A lot of lyrics are recycled from the third track, and there's a lot of tracks that aren't really songs, but more parts of a different song, which is great in small quantity, but not in the quantity that this provides. I reccomend this album for sure, but buy all of LINKIN PARK's other successes first, or just buy two or three songs off of this and call it a day. You can look at the popularity meters to determine what is a song and what's not. Two bars are non-songs, anything above is an actual song, just maybe not that popular.

- Worst one I’ve listened to so far

Going through Linkin Park’s discography and I’ve got to say it’s been the worst album from them I’ve heard so far. The album has absolutely no consistency in ANY regard. Not sound. Not message. Not structure. The only thing that is consistent is how bad most of the songs are. The album has no idea what it wants to be, changing from a more hard rock feel in one song to a piano ballad in another to some electronic noise in the background as an interlude. The sound and feel is all over the place, and while some songs are decent (Blackout, Wretches and Kings, The Catalyst) the rest of the album falls completely flat in sound, message, and structure. It honestly feels like they felt the need to put out an album and so Mike made most of it using a laptop and a decent microphone. Also Chester gets to shine in some of the songs, which he does really well. That’s honestly the best thing this album has going for it. Moving away from sound and onto the message of the album, it once again misses the mark. It seems to be a lot more political than any of their previous albums using snippets of political speeches, but then fails to deliver any sort of cohesive message (I don’t mind the band taking a political stance or making a statement, but they don’t seem to do anything outside of saying “this is political” and that really ruins the ability of the listener to interpret it in their own manner). The most coherent message it seems to send is “War is bad” but that’s not really anything new; and even then it’s not that coherent. If Linkin Park really felt like they needed to put out an album, I would’ve just taken some of their most completed songs from their underground tracks and put that out. It would’ve made for a much better album and possibly introduced their existing fan base at the time to some new songs. 1.5 out of 5 for not being the worst album I’ve ever heard, but definitely able to crack my bottom 10.

- Wow

This Album is Another Game changer from Linkin Park So Fresh From the day it was released to now i still love it

- Best album they’ve made

I love this album so much. From start to finish, it’s a masterpiece. Maybe the songs on their own aren’t the best but as an album, couldn’t be better. Mike Shinoda is a genius

- Possibly My Favorite LP Album

I think this might be my favorite album from Linkin park because it's so different and it plays so well as a whole; in fact, I'd almost go so far as to say that if you want to listen to this, you should probably listen to the entire thing, because the tracks don't work as well as standalones (although a few of them do). There's quite a variety of tracks, although there are only 9 "real" songs (but they're all very good). The album as a whole sounds amazing and polished. Even though some fans might bash it for not sounding like Linkin Park's first two albums (as they do with every album that comes out), I'd say this is one of their best.

- They are amazing

They have tried different sounds during their career and they always rock

- The Best

This is a good album. I like it. The only songs I listened to in this album is waiting for the end and iridescent and they're both the best songs in this album.

- <3

One of my favorite albums. RIP Chester <3

- Wow

Deep, atmospheric and thoughtful.. what an album.. just wish there were a few more songs than intros lol

A Thousand Suns is the fourth studio album by American rock band Linkin Park. It was first released in multiple nations on September 8, 2010, and in the United States on September 13, 2010, by Warner Bros. Records. The album was produced by Mike Shinoda and Rick Rubin, who had also worked together to produce the band's previous studio album Minutes to Midnight (2007). Recording sessions for A Thousand Suns took place at NRG Recording Studios in Hollywood, California from 2009 until early 2010. A Thousand Suns is a concept album dealing with human fears such as nuclear warfare. The band has said the album is a drastic departure from their previous work; they experimented on different and new sounds. Chester Bennington told MTV the album references numerous social issues and blends human ideas with technology. The title is a reference to the Bhagavad Gita, a line from which was popularized in 1945 by J. Robert Oppenheimer, who described the atomic bomb as being "as bright as a thousand suns". It also appears in a line from the first single of the album, "The Catalyst". A Thousand Suns is Linkin Park's longest studio album to date, clocking in at 47 minutes and 48 seconds. "Waiting for the End" was sent to radio and released to digital music retailers on August 2, 2010. "Waiting for the End" peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Alternative Songs and Rock Songs charts. Linkin Park promoted the album through the A Thousand Suns World Tour from October 2010 to September 2011. The album was generally received positively by critics, some of whom found it to be a natural progression for the band, but polarized fans. The record debuted at number one on over ten charts, and was certified platinum by the RIAA in August 2017.
