- Amazing!

Baroness does not disappoint! This double album is their best by far. Catchy yet trippy, heavy yet beautiful songs make for an amazing listen through 75 minutes of awesome musicianship. Get this now!

- One of the best albums ever.

I have never written a review before, but I believe this record deserves to be my first. To start off with, I'm sick of reading about how Yellow & Green doesn't sound anything like Red or Blue and that it's not "metal". If you're struggling to classify this album in a specific genre instead of listening to awesome music, then shame on you. This album shows progression and maturation while still keeping the Baroness edge. Sick tones, ridiculous effects, clean vocals, great drum work, a plethora of instruments, and Baroness doing it all. If you want the same boring garbage that comes out nowadays that's "metal", then go grab an Avenged Sevenfold album and enjoy. Or, you can do yourself a favor and grab this album that continues to impress, and fails to get boring. Listen to Cocainium and try not to bash your head against the wall! Easily one of my top five records of all time.

- Amazing

I went to watch baroness in Lawrence Kansas last year and got my albums signed, I got the opportunity to talk with john baizley. The man is very down to earth and so is this album. It is going in areas metal never try's to go. It's softer and fool of emotion. It's truly one of my most beloved albums.

- not their best, but good

I've been a fan of Baroness since their first album. Their style of music never gets old to me......the heavy guitar lines, chunky bass lines, big drum beats, and the crushing vocals. This album displays the band's maturity in exploring different avenues of music, which are styles I also like. I listen to many different bands and styles of music but I'm not a fan at all of mainstream music on the radio which this album resembles to close for a metal enthusiast. My opinion is that either they wanted to explore each others musical curiosities or they wanted to get more album sales which this album should achieve beings it is geared more for the radio. That also goes for any new Metallica album after "and justice for all" and the newest Mastodon album which is my least favorite out of all of them. Most people would call this being a sellout which is an opinion so a 3 star is all I give due to them straying farther than any band has strayed before from the roots they began from. I won't be buying this one due to that. Hopefully they go back to their original sound they created from the first album....

- BEST ALBUM(S) EVER

I always wanted to like Baroness but I never really liked the vocals. but now with Yellow&Green there is nothing wrong with any song. every song is just BEAUTIFUL. this is my favorite album in the world. 5 STARS

- Not the same.

Now, I may be "a narrow minded musical listener" but this is what I think of the album. My first baroness album was Blue Record and I loved it, so naturally I was excited to here from them again. However, Yellow & Green is not the same as blue. Yellow starts out sort of similar to Blue, and Red seeing as it has some up beat songs. Green however is mostly filled with slower tempos and mellodies, not what I've become accustomed to with previous records. I'm all for different types of music, BUT I like when I can come to expect somthing of a similar output from album to album. I hope in the future they plan on going back to there uptempo doom metalish style.

- Listen to it the entire way through

With headphones, loud, start to finish and it gets better and better every listen.

- Very good album.

All I have to say is that EugeniaL doesn't have a clue what she is talking about. Great album, great band. Different than Red and Blue, but who cares. Good music is good music.

- Patience

I've been listening, to baroness since I picked up the red album just out of admiration for the artwork. While I really enjoyed it I felt the blue record was a slight step back. Then when I began to listen to this yellow and green I was sure it would be my last album from them. However upon listening over and over it really grew on me and is now my favorite record of theirs. It has a slight retro feel, with some great songwriting. It's their softest offering but also the most interesting. The album flows seamlessly from one track to the next. There are some shaky vocals on this, but that would be my only complaint about a near perfect double album. This is sophisticated rock that isn't for everyone, but trust me be patient and continue to listen. My favorite tracks are march to the sea and sea lungs.

- Very refreshing

This is one of those few records where a bit light bulb goes off in my head and I think. ah hah! I have not listened to metal in years, and I am only kicking myself for not going to more of their shows in Savannah when I went to school there. This is the kind of 'metal' music that removes the bad elements what of what is sometimes a pretentious genre. Rarely do people who make metal music approach their songwriting with this level of open mindedness and creativity. The story telling is also very interesting. There are a lot of points where I feel a real 'animals' era Pink Floyd vibe. Kudos to these guys for pushing their genre to new limits and setting a bar that many of their 'peers' may not have the forethought to reach towards. As a former longtime resident of Savannah, this album really hits a very personal chord. It really communicates the dichotomy of living in that city. You are surrounded by all this beauty and relaxation, but there is this undercurrent of crime and possible danger. It’s a place of extremes, but very very rewarding. Every time I hear the last track I get really home sick for the low country. thank you Baroness.

- Fruition!!!

I have loved Baroness from the start, and with this release, they have taken everything they do so well, stuck it into the cauldron, and achieved alchemical gold! This is a full maturation of their music. Listen to Cocainium. It is an amazingly self-contained work of genius!!! (As to the charge that "it's not metal", I agree with a previous reviewer; if you are more concerned with Baroness's work fitting into the confines of a genre, than in their ability to make amazing music, there are gobs & gobs of bands out there who will be sure their product fits a metal cookie cutter mold, so you aren't out much.)

- New sound, but I love it!

Whenever a band changes their sound it alienates some older listeners, but also opens the door to new fans. I personally prefer the new direction Baroness has taken with Green & Yellow, Purple, and to a lesser extent Gold & Grey. This album shows a diverse sound and excellent musical talent with complex writing and arrangements. Not even close to as heavy as previous albums, which I appreciate as it really allows for a wider range of expression. I feel bad for earlier fans because I know how it feels to have a band you love change their style, but I am also personally glad that this is the direction taken by this incredibly gifted band.

- Some Truly Amazing Material

One of my top 50 albums.

- The Strengths and Weaknesses of Yellow and Green.

Fine- so the critics are in and a lot of people hate the album because it is not metal- that is the strength - however the ban refuses to go further and fails on it's lyrical content. While their sonic constructions are excellent lyrically this album is pathetic. Note to band: it's not good when a listener can guess your next lyric without having ever listened to the song. If Baroness had spent as much time constructing conceptual lyrical landscape as they do their sonic one - this might have been one the more inventive and exciting albums I have heard in a long time. Sadly I think I think this is on the same level with Linkin Park- Com on Baroness push it harder!

- They really had no choice but to do something different

The Blue album pushed their original sound as far as it was going to go. Quite frankly Blue was a sub par sequel to Red. Kudos to Baroness for throwing a curve ball with Yellow and Green. The album is not perfect but it is ballsy and overall it works.

- Breath taking.

Baroness is still amazing! Love the growth and maturing of there sound. There is so much to baroness than any genre could ever explain who and what baroness is.....the truth is baroness is baroness. This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Eula is one of the best songs I have ever heard.

- awesome

This is what music should be about. I love it when a band challenges it's listeners and continues to grow on a musical level. The variety and textures of this record make for an amazingly engaging listen. I highly recomend this album.

- Amazing album, one of the best i've heard in a long time.

This album is simply amazing, and I love it very much. It's creative, beautiful, brutal, heavy, melodic and elegant. I have been listening to this album in my iPod for the last 2 weeks straigh, each song differs from the last, but they all string together very well. Worth the money, trust me!

- I'd nominate it for album of the year.

It may not be as heavy, but the new direction is worth investigating. Throughout the years I've been disapointed with many new directions and I am far from a fanboy. This album has a lot more to listen to than first hit's you. Check the guitar part in the chorus of March to the Sea and notice that they actually hid that in the mix. This is not an obvious record, if that makes sense, but it's also not one of those "after I listened to it 8 times I started to like it" kind of record either. Instant appreciation, lot's to delve into after the obvious.

- My Personal Album of the Year

Well I guess third times a charm is actually true. Baroness has created som stellar albums in the past. I can definitely see why so many Baroness fans have problems with this album. The sound is different. WAY DIFFERENT. Yet, it just sounds better. If you were pull away from this album by negative comments from Baroness conservatives, I must ask you at least listen to this album and discover how much musical genius Yellow and Green exerts. Final Verdict 10/10

- Hidden Potential!

I heard March to the Sea on the radio and i figured i would check them out. This album is somewhat of a pearl hidden in the sea, they are not mainstream and i think that is one of the reasons why this is such a find! If you want to sample before you buy, i would lisen to march to sea and eula.

- wow

what a HUGE disappointment. This album is a perfect example of a band getting seccuess and compromising thier sound for more success. One word comes to mind..... SELLOUT

- What do you think?

Last couple of albums were solid. This new one reminds me of a grungy Nickleback. Who likes Nickleback. Exactly! Come back guys! I'll give the next album a chance.

- Genius! Quit hating!

Love it. If you are a real fan of Baroness and what they create musically, you will appreciate this. This album is bigger than you think creativity wise. Headphones first time through and non stop, loved it. Get back on the road dudes! Speedy recoveries! Oh, for the haters, get over yourselves.

- Simply amazing

I personally think its a fantastic album; people will say, "oh it doesn't sound like their old stuff" but why would Baroness want to sound repetitive?! Awesome job boys- this one's worth the vinyl version.

- My take

I awaited this album with zeal, but when early indications suggested this was a departure from the bands previous forays I was initially hesitant. Upon its released I waited a couple days before purchasing, all the while debating if I wanted to venture down an unpredictable path. Although not the forbearer of sludge (or whatever you like to call it), Baroness had distinguished themselves among the crowd as one of the more dynamic and musically gifted of the bunch. Both Red and Blue albums had threads throughout them that hinted this band was more than a stereotypical sludge band. Therefore, this album is not quite the left turn many are making it to be. Rather, it is as if they took “Steel That Sleeps the Eye” and expounded on that to produce Yellow and Green. In fact, should you extract that song from Blue and insert it in Yellow and Green, it would not sound out of place. Now to the album: It has taken me awhile to digest it. Stripped of preconceived notions of their previous work (i.e. accepting Yellow and Green from a novel perspective), it is still difficult to approach. Maybe I have not given it enough listens from start to finish to find that unifying theme that gels the album(s), but it does not display that cohesion of the previous two efforts. However, each song is brilliantly crafted. The mixing is not metal, nor sludge, so if that is what the listener expects, then expect disappointment. Rather, there are true gems in the heap of ore. For example, “Cocainium” has a mellow harmony that is hard to not listen to exhaustion (unless you hate it). And there are other really good songs, but there also a few that leave you scratching your head. Taken as a Yellow and Green album, and not a follow-up to Red and Blue, this is a very good album. Look, Baroness has shown in the previous two albums they were different, more artistic than the rest. Certainly I would welcome another sludge fest, as they have done that brilliantly, but I can appreciate their desire to diversify and seek new sounds. I do not see this as a commercialization (akin to Metallica’s Black album), but rather a growth of artistic expression. However, I would love to see a return to their take on sludge, as it was one of the best.

- Yellow and Green.

Let me first say I love the Red and Blue albums, especially the Blue album. Golgotha is one of my favorite songs. Unfortunately the Yellow and Green album went almost completely away from the red and blue albums. I obviously expect change just in progression and maturity, but this album loses the baroness sound, and identity. It sounds much more mainstream, and with few exception does it show any heaviness that you would expect. The guitar is ok, but not nearly what it was on the previous two albums. The drums are boring, and aren't nearly as complex as red or blue. The vocals have gone away from what they were. Almost every song sounds like they were just trying to rhyme and fell into a formula (which is why I dislike most mainstream bands, they all follow a formula). This album was definitely a regression for Baroness. If another band did this album it would be better, it's just not good for baroness. It reminds me of when Metallica did the black album. Hopefully the next album will be better, and they'll go back to some of there red and blue roots.

- another incredible random find

Who the hell are these guys? If there was no Itunes I'd never would of heard these cats. I plan to buy BLUE and RED next but I felt I should buy something recent first. If you dig Feersum Enjinn, Lusk, The Mars Volta, Meloncoly era Smashing Pumpkins, Failure, TOOL, ect... then these guys are for you...Headphones and a nice buzz make it even better... Ive bought the other albums which are incredible, BUT, this one hits my sweet spot. "Board up the house" is my summer song.. Means alot since I live in a tourist invaded island by the sea..

- What happend?!

Ive been following baroness since the first EP in 2004 and I have watched them grow as a group, seen the songwriting get better and better until this happend. Red and Blue were excellent albums and showed fresh ideas as they slowly moved away from the constant growling vocals. They are still there on red and blue but they seem to be completley gone on green and yellow. I apreciate the creativity of the double LP thing but perhaps they stretched themselves a bit thin? I enjoyed them because they were a heavy band that played tasty riffs. They continue to come up with tasty riffs but it isnt metal music anymore which is why I listend to them in the first place. Ive seen these guys live many times and it was absolutley raw and gritty every single time, but this music is pop-ish and cant be raw and gritty because of its overly producted sound. I look forward to the next album of course because nobody bats a thousand, (Sabbath, Zepplin, Mettalica, etc)

- Starts off strong but ends weak.

Yellow gets off to a strong start, but slowly mellows out. When you get to green it just not heavy at all and in my opinion isn't as good. I mean i can listen to it, but its not near as good as the blue and red albums. Most of the time i listen to yellow and when i get to green change the album.

- Awesome

Please keep doing what your doing baroness forget the haters.

- I will have to hear their next release to see if I agree 100% with this one

Im mixed on this release. I like the fact that Baroness is trying to push beyond the sound they have had since their beginnings, its a must for all bands to grow and experiment. My only issue with this album is the vocals often sound forced into a area and sound that doesn't sound comfortable as well as the music. The band is talented and creative but I agree with some others that several of the tracks fall into the contemporary alternative category and thats not any place for a band who wants to be recognized for its sound and experimentation. I love tracks like Take my bones away and March to the sea, I hear a lot of early Baroness in those and I especially love the move towards more prog sounding songs like Cocainum , Sea Lungs and the Color theme songs. I think if they find a way to merge and complete those sounds of those song with strong lyrics and riffs for the follow up releases after this album, I believe they will find their niche for a few more albums and even more respect from their older fans and a wider but appreciative newer audience. I give it a 3, only because being a older guy thats been through the early metal, punk, post punk and later grunge / indy sounds I would say this ways a bit too heavy with contemporary alternative music for my taste. Maybe it should have just been the Yellow Album, because thats basically all i purchased. Its not strong enough as a double.

- Tepid

This is a watery gruel. Bland and essentially tasteless.

- Took a few listens...

It's definitely a different direction than their previous albums and I respect what they're doing by evolving/changing. But as pleasurable listening experience, I admit I'm a little disappointed. There are definitely some gems, but many tracks come across as weak solely because of the vocals. If Baroness wanted to explore an entirely vocals-free direction in a future album, I'd think the results could be Epic.

- Pretty good.

This album kind of sends this band into a new direction. I like most of it, but some of the songs could be a little more developed.

- Wow...

I listen to diverse styles of music, but honestly appreciate the heavy stuff most. Definitely enjoyed this band’s previous albums and sadly this one (plus the rest after) have only had maybe three or less great jams. It’s exactly what happened to Opeth, In Flames and numerous others. What a shame.

- I'm not dissapointed

First Baroness exposure for me was Blue, which I think is a wonderfully "retro" and jammin piece of work. They play well together have a cool, unique vibe that reminds me of Nirvana in the way they seem to groove together. This is not grunge though. I've read that they sound like Mastodon too. I don't think they sound at all like Mastodon. Mastodon is darker and very different rhythmically. The Hunter is a ROCKIN album though. Anyway, Just because they are both progressive bands, people lump them together but that's done out of haste not examination. I though Red was very boring by the way. I downloaded it after listening to Blue for a while and I was dissapointed. This album is much better than Blue and Red is almost an early demo by comparison to either. This band seems to be developing rapidly. I Must see them live...

- Not just a metal band...

but unexpectedly these guys truly can create art. I don't really care for the metal songs (it not bad music, just not my taste), but I cannot get enough of songs like "Twinkler" & "Stretchmarker". I have gone back through previous albums just to find these hidden gems. Thank you, gents. May metal artists and your music never die 🔥

- A fanboy's heart is broken.

I've loved just about everything Baroness has done, but this is unforgivable. The only reason I gave it two stars is because I'm such a fanboy I can't stomach giving just one. -It's sooooo BORING!!! I listen to this band for the innovative guitar and unique drumming you can't get from most bands. All that is gone (save a very few songs) and replaced with a barrage of ethereal, spacey, and misplaced EFFECTS!!! It's like when Van Halen started using synthesizers... -I really hope the drummer has a side project because he didn't really get to do much of anything on this one. -And the lyrics...good gawd...I always thought the lyrics were kinda hokey, but they were aggressive and fit the music so it didn't matter. Now the ridiculous and just plain dumb words that are spewed (some accompanied with off-key harmonies) are right out in front, making it impossible to be ignored. -"Collapse" is probably the worst song I've ever heard. My wife heard part of it and asked,"You spent your money on this? Haha!" Lemme save you some money and just buy the singles, "Cocainium", "Sea Lungs", and "Stretchmarker." -Walk away and wait for the next one.

- good stuff

G wicks has a great opinion. Listen to that person. Please. But this album. Its awesome.

- Another Great Baroness Album

Wonderful album and, contrary to others on this thread, I think it plays nicely with Red and Blue; just a bit different. One of the best, most original bands on the market now. Thank you guys for putting on a great show in Indianapolis by the way!

- Good stuff

I don't like it as much as the Blue Record, but there are some good moments, and every song is at its worst decent, at its best epic. Few complaints. But i'm not buying the whole thing.

- Impressive

It takes a lot of balls to go out of your comfort zone, especially when you know that there will be masses of people labeling you a sellout. I find this double album a huge jump in musicianship and songwriting for Baroness. They could have ripped out 5 more red and blue albums and their core audience would be thrilled, but it is clear that they have more interest in testing the boundaries rather then being suppressed by them. I for one am going to cherish this music and hope that Baroness continues to move forward, because I am on board for the ride.

- Terrible.

I was a huge fan Of the red and blue albums, but this is just pop junk. How people are nominating this for album of the year is beyond me. Go listen to the blue album and forget they ever made these.

- A Divergence of Genre

This is one of my favorite albums of at least the last 10 years, if not ever. Apparently it came out in 2012, but I only caught onto it early 2014. Prior to this record I really thought Baroness was just another Mastodon wannabe. Not bad, but nothing really stood out to me. After my first listen, I noticed that the first 6 songs really delivered and kept me interested through the remaining 12. I immediately wanted to listen to “Cocanium” again for the Zeppelin-esq guitar hook and organs. This song really hits hard. All 6 of these songs with their powerful vocal harmonies and effect driven guitars really stick with you. None more so than the haunting “Twinkler” which solidifies the divergence of genre that this album represents. The second half of this album really kicks off with one of the biggest snare reverb sounds I have ever heard in “Green Theme” and follows with some amazing vocal harmonies in “Board Up the House”. As with some of my other positive reviews there is not a bad song on either album. I recommend listening cover to cover when you have some time to really chill and enjoy some great musicianship. Well done, classic, masterpiece.

- An unexpected disappointment

After thoroughly enjoying their last two records I must say that I found Y&G to be a bit of a letdown. With a rare exception, gone are any traces of sludge metal, and for that matter, much of anything metal at all. After really liking the first single, 'Take My Bones Away', I was expecting a similar sound for the rest of the record; but it's nowhere to be found, except maybe on The Line Between. Baroness are not a prog metal/prog rock band, yet most of this album affects a prog-metal vibe; apparently the band has been listening to a lot of Pink Floyd and perhaps some Mars Volta lately. It's not convincing. 'Sea Lungs' seems to be going for a 'Golgotha' vibe, but instead sounds like early to mid 80s Ozzy or Priest fare, minus the epic guitar of Rhoads or the howling Halford vox. The band also veers off into modern indie rock territory on other occasions. Sorry, guys, but I heard plenty of this exact same music in the 80s NWOBHM era. The lack of direction and cohesion is apparent and obvious; any pretense towards heaviness has been abandoned :( The final fault I will find with this album is the horrendous mixing and production. The drums seem to be heavily compressed and are simply horrible compared to the last two records, and the indie-rock/prog gloss dilutes any sense of depth or resonance. Vocals sound buried. Overall, 2.5/5.

- I REALLY wanted to like this album, but...

...simply put this is pretty awful no matter what genre you want to put it into. I totally understand if a band doesn't want to do screaming and thundering drums anymore, that is fine and lots of great bands have taken dramatic turns in their music and I have appreciated it and been fine. However, most of this is simply BAD no matter what you think it wants to be. You have no idea how much I WANTED to like this record and after listening to it repeatedly I just cannot find many redeeming qualities. Eula is a great song, no doubt, but so much of this is purely putzing around and navel gazing. Im stunned that a significant amount of people find this acceptable, never mind good!

- Metal the way I like it!

I just started listening to this band, yes I'm a newbie but I must say I'm a fan! Good music!

- It Could Have Been So Much More

If this were an instrumental album, I would have given it 5 stars. Unfortunately it's not. Green Theme is by far the best song out of both albums. It doesn't bother me so much that they're trying to sing more. It's the lyrical content that is lacking and makes it unbearable at times. ...But don't take my word for it.

- Album of the Year!

I have never seen a band evolve and change like Baroness has. From their sludge metal masterpiece Red, to the progressive artistry in Blue, Baroness has once again released something completely new, fresh, and rewarding. Very atmospheric and beautiful.

Yellow & Green Wiki

Chartreuse (US: , UK: , French: [ʃaʁtʁøz] ), also known as yellow-green or greenish yellow, is a color between yellow and green. It was named because of its resemblance to the green color of a French liqueur called green chartreuse, introduced in 1764. Similarly, chartreuse yellow is a yellow color mixed with a small amount of green; it was named because of its resemblance to the color of a similar French liqueur called yellow chartreuse. During the 2000s, yellow-green, as well as other shades of bright green like lime green, became a very popular aesthetic of choice due to various tech companies using it as office decor and other associated products and the massive popularity and success of the Shrek franchise from DreamWorks.
