Seriously people, for those that don't like this soundtrack because it doesn't contain enough of the traditional James Bond music, get a grip. This soundtrack pays plenty of homage to the old scores while providing sweeping new scores full of chords that evoke the spy blockbusters of days past. This film is another example of a brilliant re-imagining, and this score is the perfect companion to it.
Dave Arnold was in top form with the last two movies, and to me Quantum of Solace -- though not as good a movie a Casino Royale and Skyfall -- captured the essence and nuance of Bond as well as any to date. Newman's music was serviceable, but lacked inspiration…and when Newman does occasionally integrate more traditional Monte Norman/Barry-esque melodies it sounds out-of-step with the rest of the score which all over the place -- like it could be pick it up and set down in virtually any mega-action pic of the last twenty years and it would still work just fine.
One of many but I really enjoy this kind of soundtrack love it I listen to it on the way home from work and I listen to it when I’m relaxing at home I highly recommend it it is definitely an outstanding job of the soundtrack
I have to say that I've grown to get extremely tired of the David Arnold aesthetic of Bond soundtracks lately, which was why I was thrilled to hear that Thomas Newman would be taking the reigns! Truth be it I would love to see Christopher Nolan helm a Bond movie and get Mr. Zimmer behind the wheel for a soundtrack at some point, but for now that's just a dream. I do like this new soundtrack. More than anything I like it for it's fresh new sound. There are some new sounds in here that we haven't heard before but it does stay loyal to it's Bond roots. It's fun, has its bombastic moments. Some tracks, like "Close Shave", sound a little too Thomas Newman for me. They bring me back to listening to the soundtrack for Lemony Snicket's Series Of Unfortunate Events, which just doesn't sound Bond. "Breadcrumbs" without a doubt has to be my favorite as it comes right back to the core and just sounds great. Overall it's fun, fresh, and Bond. A worthy addition to the Bond library.
The movie was perfectly scored. I loved Tennyson, Chimera and Shanghai Drive!
Thomas Newman's score to Skyfall has become the first James Bond score to be nominated for Best Original Score Academy Award!!
the skyfall soundtrack is the greatest movie soundtrack in the universe a true classic the best of the best skyfall soundtrack rocks
I was going to buy this move sound track until I went though it and found that did not have the most important song there skyfall opening Title song
I love this music!! It has guitars, electronic programming, Percussion, and an Orchestra!! And was recorded at the great abbey road studios in London. Amazing composer, and a great film!! Enjoy!!!
Awesome!!
I'm a long time collector of spy soundtracks and this one is okay in a generic spy movie sense. I left the theater impressed by the movie but unmoved by its music (a rarity in my Bond movie-viewing experiences since the scores have often been one of the most reliable high points). It simply lacks the 007 flavor that was created by John Barry (and to a lesser degree Monty Norman) in the early films and later modernized by David Arnold. The theme song is just okay too. I'd hoped for better.
How on earth do you ever release a Bond film soundtrack without the title theme? This is a truly bizarre and disappointing choice.
I would totally disagree with Yoyodyne: this score is spectacular and the interweaving of the original is done with such skill and mastery. The score puts the !!! on the action and keeps you on edge. When the Bond Theme is used, it brings just the right measure of nostalgia and familiarity. The motifs are indeed lush and exotic and seem to stand outside the film, on their own, very well. 5 Stars are not enough for the impact this score has on the film.
I rarely write any review, but here is a different story. I loved Bond movies since i was a kid and i did follow the evolution from John Barry, of which i have all the soundtracks, to sir George Martin (same), Mr. Hamlisch (same). I hated the soundtrack of Goldeneye, License to Kill and finally learned to like David Arnold. But here we are at different level. Only Sam Mendes and Thomas Newman can come up with this overall package in Skyfall. The music is a perfect companion for the movie. From the scene in the little Istanbul market to the amazing train fight and so on. Some of the track are just perfect. Others are a caress to your soul. I love the "Health and safety" piece and the pieces related to the prep work in Skyfall. I knew it (i have ALL the soundtracks from Thomas Newman) and his score was really one of the thing i was more waiting for. It did not disappoint me a bit. On the contrary.....may be one of the best ever.
Thomas Newman did a wonderful job doing the soundtrack for the latest James Bond movie, Skyfall. I loved hearing brief snippets of the main James Bond theme here and there along with a bit of Adele's song. The soundtrack for Skyfall is not one of the best soundtracks from the 007 movie series, but it's still a good one. For those who gave this soundtrack a bad rating because it doesn't have Adele's song on it, you should have listened to the short demos before buying.
Good
Tired of studios and artists pulling fast ones... Bought album thinking Adele's song titled Skyfall was on the album, only to find the soundtrack song titled 'Skyfall' was not the same thing... Boo on Adele for forcing the issue with a single release, and Sony for pulling a fast one... One star, not going to reward this behavior, no matter how good or bad the rest of the album is...
I know there are some negative reviews on here and I do see their point. I've been a fan of David Arnold's contribution and am sure he would of done a great job with this film. However Thomas Newman's score is superb and the album has a wonderful moody variety. It's a great download and well worth the money with it's length and number of tracks. If you want Adele's title song, just spend another $1.29. It's not irregular that they don't include the title song, same thing happened when Casino Royale was released. Just don't let that deter you from a great purchase.
This is the first Bond soundtrack to be nominated for an oscar since 1977!! It also won a BAFTA award. Stop hating and just listen to it!!
Bring back David Arnold...at least he knew how to score a Bond film properly!
Super pelicula y buenisima banda de sonido
Newman delivers a strong score layered with exotic rhythms and lush instrumentation -- the perfect soundtrack a globe-trotting spy yarn. That is, a spy yarn not branded with the 007 moniker. That's the problem with his Skyfall score: Newman's much too stingy with the John Barry/Monty Norman James Bond music queues. We've come to expect these familiar themes in Bond movies; David Arnold, the composer of the past half dozen or so Bond films, masterfully wove the John Barry themes into his contemporary scores, delivering the perfect updating of the "Bond sound." For whatever reason (a composer's pride?), Newman is excessively stingy with the traditional Bond cues. Track one literally opens with two meager bars of John Barry's shock trumpet gun-barrel fanfare--almost an "eff you" to Bond fans. Newman only occasionally (and seemingly reluctantly) tosses in the familiar Monty Norman chord progression (Adele's theme song uses that chord progression much more generously) as backing for his own themes. When it turns up, it's welcome, but it's always too fleeting. Nor does Newman even reference Adele's theme in his score. John Barry always wove the theme song into his orchestration, giving each "episode" of the Bond franchise its own sound. That kind of collaboration is not for Newman, who seems to think he's bigger than the material. If he scores the next Bond flick, I hope he remembers that he is a custodian of a musical tradition and not a self-important auteur.
Perfect! :D Bond, James Bond!
I like the music on this soundtrack, BUT you go to the movie, you like the music, you buy the soundtrack, and you EXPECT the music from the movie to be on it. Yes, it's totally cheap not to put the Adele song on there, but where the heck are the end credits as well?? Turns out that track is on a different album-Casino Royale. Come on Sony. REALLY??
I don't think I'm supposed to fall asleep to James Bond, but congrats...a new achievement. I've heard the movie is well done especially with the hardcore Daniel Craig nailing the Bond character so well. But....to me....that's about it. I'll take my friend's word for it on the movie...because if this is the soundtrack, then that film must not be THAT exciting. Where's Mission Impossible 2's OST when you need it most? THAT's good action music.
Thomas does his best to hit the Bond style and casts his nuances in the mix. I enjoyed his interpretation. There was plenty of historical musical references.
Decent music score, but it's not "bondian" enough. Every other Bond composer, even the much-maligned Eric Serra, took the opportunity to interpret the classic James Bond theme in their own style. Not Thomas Newman. The few nods to the JB theme here are rather lazy recycled versions of the David Arnold arrangements. It's the 50th anniversary. Everyone wants to hear the theme, not this generic ethno-twaddle. Will not be buying.
I ENJOYED ALL THE MUSIC THROUGHOUT FILM, BUT I HAVE TO SAY... SILHOUETTE GOT ME PUMPED ALONG WITH THAT SCENE AND NOW IT'S JUST UNFORGETABLE.
Soundtracks and scores must be heard in context with the visuals in the movie. We in the US will soon see how it all fits. Some "Adjustment Bureau" stuck in the action pieces. But we can't bring back John Barry, and David Arnold was starting to get repetitious too. Let's see the film, then decide for certain.
I appreciate great movie scores, especially the catchy ones. And while many are critical of this soundtrack, I've enjoyed it. I've seen the movie twice in theaters, and listened to the soundtrack in between viewings. I can almost picture the scene now. It sends me back to the film without leaving my office.
I don't often purchase film scores, but this one was of such high quality that I actually wanted to give it an occasional listen. Nice work -- I hope the same composer continues on with the Bond series!
If people want new, moody music and want to relegate the James Bond theme to the 1960s, then why do they use the tried and true music for the commercials? Hawaii Five 0 at least kept the theme. This is not the music for a spy action film, much less a Bond movie. (By the way, bring back the standard opening with the gun barrel and the dots. It was good enough for every other Bond.) As Brosnan said in Tomorrow, "Give the people what they want".
As a whole the soundtrack was excellent and definitely had the Bond feel and intensity. The fact that the Title song by Adele was left out is an outrage but to put another song in the track #23 spot titled "Skyfall" is a huge misrepresentation both by Sony, MGM, Columbia Pictures and iTunes by not disclosing the title song was not included. Only on the back of the store bought CD you will find a very small disclaimer that the title song was intentionally left out. Bad business and done in poor taste to the Bond franchise, I guess "buyer beware" defines this experience.
As the BIGGEST Thomas Newman fan, I gotta say this was a disappointment. There is some classic Newman moments here but not enough classic Bond moments. Breadcrumbs does provide a nice small clip of what could have been but overall I thought Newman could have done A LOT better. I do hope after seeing the film the music might work better but as just a music experience it doesn't pass the test. Normally Newman score's are outstanding on their own but here no. I just don't see it. Don't worry Newman fans, LESS THAN ZERO is still Newman's finest hour. Let's just hope it FINALLY gets it's due and gets a FULL RELEASE someday. Boy does it deserve it.
This deserves 5 stars all the way. There are plenty of other albums with the classic 007 theme throughout. This stands on it's own as an excellent buy for anyone who appreciates movie scores. All you need is to get the single from Adele separately, and this a very complete soundtrack with great variety and depth. Looking forward to the next score from Thomas Newman.
Thomas Newman knows his stuff. I think half the negative reviews here are from disgruntled people who were angry about the Adele theme song not being included. Yes, that's disappointing indeed, but come on...you are supposed to be reviewing the music here, not the fact that something is missing! This score is AMAZING and suits the film perfectly. What a palate of styles etc. Mr. Newman has a way of making film scores very listenable away from the film. Most great scores do of course, but he is surely no exception. Some would say that the soundtrack does it's work best when you are only "subconsciously" aware of it during the film and there is truth to that. However, in this case and many others...you are aware of the music and how it is bringing the scene alive and yet it is not "intrusive" or "distracting." This is genius...sorry many of you missing the "pop" song don't get that. I mean, if the score is not to your taste, that's one thing. However, I saw the film yesterday, loved the score...listening it to it know...wow! Some of it makes me hear what might have happened if Beethoven was also a rock musician...
This is actually the score. All the music here is compositions from the film and they are indeed nice. Especially Shanghai Night Drive which has a great smooth chillout sound. You won't hear the Bond theme on every track in fact it seems to be on maybe two but that would get old very very fast. Enjoy it for what it is. The background score to a great film.
Thomas Newman is an incredible composer for film! He has written so many amazing scores and this is no exception! This score leads James Bond themes in a new direction, for this album sounds the most different from the rest of James Bond soundtracks. Don't get me wrong, James Bond themes are used throughout the score, but it sounds more unique than the previous scores created. Very nice new direction, fits the movie perfectly. Highly recommended for Newman fans!
If I had wanted to listen to Wall.e, I would have bought Wall.e I find no joy or even Bond here. No title track either. Bummer. I miss you David Arnold.
This album has been getting a lot of grief because it is so different from the music of all the other Bond movies, but I am so glad that it's different. The movie itself is a whole new kind of Bond - less of the suave, slow paced, intellectual movie and more of a modern action movie with all the style of the characters we know and love. And a new Bond calls for a new sound. We all know that music is extremely vital to film, and I think that Thomas Newman's work is the main thing that brings Bond into the present and beyond. Yes it's different. But Bond can't stay the same forever! Plus, the music itself is absolutely incredible, expressive, and just gorgeous.
Just a bunch of mood music. No hooks or memerable melodies. Can't see anybody activily listening to this and humming along like Barry's scores from the 60's.
Ok, I understand Sam Mendes imposed his regular collaborator, Thomas Newman, but quite frankly this is just background music. Seems a pretty odd choice, since Newman is not known for this sort of atmosphere. David Arnold was the one to get closer to the Bond music material immortalized by the master John Barry. There's not a single cue in this album to resemble those elements. Arnold was smart enough to understand he didn't need to reinvent the formula to make some of the best Bond scores after Barry's era. Such a missed opportunity for the 50th anniversary.
Skyfall by Adele is not on this album because it is an Adele song, not a Thomas Newman song. So stop whining.
Folks, if you're looking for the main title, you have to buy the single. What is left is the incidental music. Don't misunderstand me, some of the music is gripping, or poignant; but there's not a lot that's characteristicly "Bond". There were times when I had to remind myself that I was, in fact, listinging to Skyfall and not one of the other action/adventure chase/fight sequences on my iPod. If you want to have something that is clearly memorable as Skyfall, buy the single. This will not be on my top played list. Meh.
What a huge disappointment this music score / soundtrack was. Almost none of the tracks are memorable. They could be playing in an elevator or in a restaurant's background and I would not know them. Not having the Adele song, or the actual James Bond theme (unless I somehow missed it) makes it not even worth the 1 star I had to give.
I love James Bond 007,but now,I love EVEN MORE! I love the idea of Daniel Craig(And his"water eyes")playing Mr.Bond:The legend shall live on!!!!!!!
Thomas Newman has done it again. This is truly a beautiful, sometimes eerie score. It also uses a lot less of the original James Bond theme than any of the recent scores. I am sure that would irk some, but for me it was quite refreshing (in the same way that the later scores in the Harry Potter series started to use less and less of the John Williams theme). I own more than 200 scores, and I have to say this is probably my favorite one of the year thus far.
Great themes and orchestrations. New musical ideas brought to Bond, but contrary to those saying Newman does not pay sufficient homage to past themes, I beg to disagree. He certainly does bring in past themes in an obvious manner, but the old Bond themes appear quite often as complex variations. They are woven into the music's fabric often part of the percussive and bass instrumentation. Quite beautifully done.
Great, great album--it blew me away. Severine is the most beautiful song I have ever heard.
I personally love movie scores, and this one is great. I am disappointed that the title score by Adele wasn't included, and I was hoping for an instrumental version of the title score. I guess I'll have to wait for the London Philharmonic to cover it.
