This is a recording of live performances at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall on March 13-16, 2013. At the time, I told my friends it was the best performance of Bach's B Minor Mass I'd ever heard. I have not changed my mind. It was a stunningly glorious rendition by an orchestra and soloists in their prime. Won't necessary please purists, but it was definitely wonderful to hear in person. Take a look at the list of performers below, then listen, and you'll agree. Unless those who transferred to this to CD totally botched the job, this should be a contender for one of the top three. Bach played in a pseudo baroque style, sung by Wagner's b*stard children. It's a strange combination that almost works. Gilbert has never been known as a baroque specialist nevermind Bach so perhaps he can be forgiven for this transgression. The playing by the instramentalists is OK, but they aren't exactly the BCJ or Amsterdam Baroque. -Bz
