Skillet - Comatose

About Comatose by Skillet Album

Release Date: October 3, 2006 John Cooper- vocals, bass Korey Cooper- keyboards Ben Kasica- guitar Lori Peters- drums Classic rock riffs, swirling drums, monstrous hooks, and undeniably catchy choruses... hints of old school progressive rock mixed in with modern alternative flourishes... touches of classical influence as swelling strings intersect with sonic adrenaline rushes. It's indeed a fusion unlike any other, marking the latest chapter in the continuous evolution of Skillet, whose moniker couldn't be more fitting for their explosive new Lava/Atlantic Records release, Comatose. The project follows Skillet's 2004 Lava/Atlantic debut, Collide, which launched the group into the public eye with the single "Savior" (the #2 most added at CMJ's "Loud Rock and Crucial Spins" panel the first week out), and garnered the quartet a prestigious Grammy Award nomination. Collide went on to become their best-selling project to date, with over 200,000 units sold, while the band played some 200 dates a year - including tours with the likes of Saliva, Shinedown and Finger Eleven, Three Days Grace - in the process becoming one of the hardest working, heaviest rocking, and most broadly appealing acts of its generation. "We're proud of where we've been in the past, but I feel like this is our strongest record," says vocalist/bassist John Cooper of Comatose. Recorded at Chicago Recording Company (Smashing Pumpkins, Michael Jackson, R. Kelly), the album was produced by Brian Howes (from famed Canadian TVT band Closure and Hinder's hit debut) and mixed by maestros Chris Lord-Alge (Green Day, Hoobastank, Bon Jovi, P.O.D.) and David Bottrill (Tool, Staind). "There are so many different influences that it won't just be about rock audiences or metal audiences," notes Cooper. "I think there's something here for everybody." Pop in the project for a matter of seconds and it's obvious Skillet has raised the bar yet again, building off the refined musicianship found on Collide and taking it to even more jaw-dropping extremes. A case in point is "Rebirthing," a complex but accessible amalgamation of piercing strings and humongous power chords sure to be a concert staple. In sharp contrast, but equally compelling, are tracks like "The Last Night" and "Say Goodbye," oozing with ethereal orchestration and infectious sing-a-long potential. "I just love rock ballads and the old days of Motley Crue, Aerosmith, and Bon Jovi," says Cooper. "They always help you remember where you were, what you were doing, and who you were dating. They represent more of the pop side of what we do, which might have been hinted at in other records, but was never fully realized or matured." On the other side of the Skillet, Comatose shows the band flexing its experimental muscles, adding several piano-based and progressive-influenced pieces. A careful dissection of the album's first single, "Whispers," unveils nods to the current prog crop via the channels of Yes, while "Better Than Drugs" is a delightfully schizophrenic barnburner that is one of the disc's most aggressive displays. "The Last Night" takes a more delicate twist, merging John's vocals with his wife Korey Cooper's keyboard cadences. "It's a new era for both Atlantic and Skillet," exclaims Andy Karp, Head of A&R for Atlantic Records. "It's the first record where we've really been one on one with the band, and it's the latest step in our unique journey together. I've been at the label seventeen years and we're known for having so many great rock n' roll bands: Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Yes, Bad Company. There really aren't a lot of labels that have that kind of pedigree for rock acts, and Skillet is yet another in a long line of great bands." Cooper and company can certainly relate, citing several from the label's lineage as influencers since its infancy. "Growing up, I was a prog freak and loved bands like Yes and Dream Theater," he confirms. "I also grew up with my mom as a classical piano teacher and took lessons for eight years, along with playing in the marching band and symphony. It's funny because every once in a while there was a touch of that on Collide, but until recently, I didn't see what that background had to do with rock music. On this record, we were able to make it work structurally with the piano and strings, plus there's enough prog to make me happy." Aside from Skillet's musical strides, Cooper's songwriting has expanded to cover a vast range of topical territories, some of which follow socially conscious ideals, while others vulnerably mirror his personal life and struggles. Take, for instance, the aforementioned "The Last Night," which talks about someone considering suicide after living life in despair and not having support from their parents. Rather than calling it quits, the track suggests life is worth living and through the help of a supportive friend, they're eventually talked down from that ledge. Even closer to home for Cooper is "The Older I Get," which picks up after his mom passed away, tracing the rocky relationship he had with his dad and new stepmother. "My dad got remarried two months after my mom died, and my stepmother's husband had also passed away a few months earlier," he recalls. "It was a really bizarre situation and they didn't get along, which was also the point when my dad and I started fighting. From the time I was fourteen or fifteen, I don't remember having a single conversation with him for about four years that didn't have to do with fighting. But a lot has mended since then and we've been able to move on. You can only go through life so long living in regret, and while those situations certainly affected me, I don't hold onto the anger anymore." Those introspective visions tie in with the group's overall goals of promoting positive messages that will give fans something to digest beyond pre-conceived clichés or trite topics. Naming the record Comatose further cements those expressions, hoping to rev up listeners to break beyond the mundane, get on track with their relationships, and charge forward with hope. "John has written the best songs he's every written and there's been such an evolution on all levels for the band," says Karp. "Sonically we set out to create a combination of electronic elements, orchestration, and a melodic approach. Skillet has managed to hit all of those three exactly on target, raising its game to yet another level of excellence." More than just making a disc packed with killer compositions, Cooper hopes Comatose's deeper meaning will strike a chord on all levels with listeners from any walk of life. "We live in a time where technology and information is so fast, but somehow we've never felt more alone," he sums up, referencing a line by Matthew McConaughey in Contact. "We're all so desperately trying to communicate with each other online with MySpace and instant messenger that no one gets to know one another, and they feel so alone with nobody to talk to about their problems. So I guess in Bono-esque fashion we're talking about how we need to wake up and come out of the sleep we're in and start reaching out to one another, getting it right in our own lives and actually being there for someone else."

- A must get album

I've been a fan of skillet for a very long time, and this by far is the greatest album they've made, and my favorite album of all time, it has the perfect balance of feel-good songs, emotional songs, fun songs, and inspiring songs, the lyrics have more thought put into them than any other music I've ever heard, definitely the perfect album, and will be very hard for them, or any other band to ever top.

- One of the best albums ever

No matter if your going through a tough time, or you just want to hear some good Christian rock, this album is great.

- Skillet's best album

This is Skillet's best album. It just barely inches out Collide in my opinion. I’ve listened to both over a dozen times and I can now say that Comatose just feels more complete to me. Collide is their 2nd best album without a single doubt in my mind. There’s gonna be people out there who are gonna say they like Collide more, and I can understand that. Just to me Comatose felt more complete and more like an album rather than just a collection of songs. I know they’re a "Christian" band, but they don’t even talk about God in most of these songs. Plus, even if all the songs were about God, there’s nothing wrong with that. If atheists listen to those songs, they’re simply there because it’s good music. And the songs that are about God aren’t even noticeable, which is probably one of the reasons why a lot of non-religious people like them. I think this fully deserves it’s 5 stars. There’s going to be people who are gonna disagree with me, and that’s ok. Not everybody loves symphonic hard rock. That’s a very specific genre. But even if it isn’t your cup of tea, you will enjoy at least a few songs off this album. This album is just an all around great album. Every song feels different and has great structure, great track listing, meaningful and deep lyrics at times, and very unique at it’s time. Not very many rock or metal bands had strings or a boy and girl vocalist back then. Obviously now there’s plenty, but still this album holds up regardless of that which is pretty crazy. Yes there’s better albums out there, that’s not a hard question. And yes this album isn’t the album of the decade, but it’s simple enough to get the job done and is well worth coming back to over, and over, and over again.

- The greatest album of all time -song by song review

Simply put, this is the greatest album of all time. Skillet has not yet surpassed these songs in sound quality, lyricism, and Skillet-ness 1.) Rebirthing This song starts out the album strong, with epic strings and an insane chorus. 2.) The Last Night The tone quickly changes from a banger to a much more serious song. This is about a girl who struggles with cutting and suicidal thoughts. God is telling her that there is hope. 3.) Yours To Hold Beautiful ballad. Really gets going in the second half. Johns vocals have never sounded so sincere. 4.) Better Than Drugs Another banger. The chorus is catchy, and the verses are deep. 5.) Comatose The title track is both sonically and lyrically stunning. Wondrous melodic hard rock, with a beautiful message. 6.) The Older I Get A sad, regretful song about fights in a family, and how they are meaningless. Truly a beautiful song and one of the highlights of the album. 7.) Those Nights This is the greatest song in the world. Skillet creeps into alternative/emo here, as John sings about his childhood and his best friend. 8.) Falling Inside The Black It took me a while to get used to this song, but it has an amazing guitar line and Korey adds her vocals to the chorus. 9.) Say Goodbye Out of the ballads on Comatose, this one is the best. Piano mixes with guitar and strings as John struggles to say goodbye. 10.) Whispers In The Dark I feel like this song should have been the closer, it's so freakin amazing. Right from the opening, there's flaming guitars, heavy vocals, and overall awesomeness. 11.) Looking For Angels This is the only song that is a puzzle to me. John sort of raps the verses. It's a bit of a strange ending to an unforgettable album.

- Terrible

The lead singlet had gone insane and ruined this band for me.

- Amazing music

Skillets music is life changing the song awake and alive is one of my favorites especially the line,” IM AWAKE IM ALIVE NOW I KNOW WHAT I BELIVE INSIDE NO ITS MY TIME AND ILL DO WHAT I WANT CAUSE THIS IS MY LIFE”. - SKILLET MASTERPIECE

I love Skillet, and am a fairly newcomer to them for about 2-3 months. When I first bought this album at 16 years old, am 17 now, didn't like it as much. It grew on me within like 2 weeks and I love it now. Easily their best and most succesful, but Awake is my favorite and this comes a close second. My favorites are Older I Get, Those Nights, Rebirthing, Comatose, Yours to Hold, are my 5 best. If you get into them this and awake are the ones to buy. Overall terrific, check it out if you haven;t listened to it. Another highlight is the symphony too, kinda like what Metallica did live. It's really cool. Awesome band

Comatose is literally on fire. The first time I heard this song was in a Naruto AMV, Obito Uchiha.

- Good

Good album with some solid singles.

- Best Skillet album

Very good. I love the crossover of hard rock and alternative metal. Powerful album.

- The best album they've made.

My favorite album of rock music. Skillet's masterpiece is in Comatose, the album that introduced me to them. Every song is powerful, meaningful, and strong in lyrics and music. Whispers in the Dark is my favorite song.

- Korey and John rock!

They sing so good on this album! I know this is like the only album by Skillet with Korey singing but I got to admit she’s really good! I like Rebirthing, Whispers in the dark, Those nights, The last night, Looking for angels and Comatose. Korey sings in The last night and Rebirthing. It’s a great album! I found out about it last year. The best ones are Whispers in the dark and Those nights

- Skillet is my favorite rock person😍😍😍

I love all of your albums

- The second best album ever (after Awake)

Love Skillet. Listen to them all the time. This band freaking changed my life. Love The Last Night especially. 7 out of 5.

- Wowwwwww

This album is amazing, almost all the songs are worth listening to every day

- This album cemented Skillet as one of the hard rock greats!

This was the album that got me into hard rock and heavy metal. It’s that good. Every song on here is unique. I recommend this album to anyone who wants to hear pure rock and then pure ballad. Buy it. It is one of the best albums out there. Favorites: ALL OF THEM!!!

- Ok

I kind of like awake a little better than comatose

- I love this album

I have always loved this album since October 13, 2006. I don’t know what they do but they have mastered it very well. Comatose or the last night are one of my favorite songs in there if I had to choose. I also love there other albums like awake and alive, Legendary, and even there new album dominion. It also has gotten me through the toughest time in my life. If you are struggling then I would very strongly suggest this album to anybody. Thank you skillet. I have abs always love your music skillet

- BUY THIS, PLEASE!

This got me into rock music, with an amusing message. My favorite album out of any.

- Beautiful

There's only like 2 songs I dislike on here. The Last Night was my favorite, it was emotional and sad and adorable all at the same time and it was nice to hear Korey sing too.

- Skillet

I may not have bought the full album but The song The Last Night related to my girlfriend so much. The other songs are great too.

- Where the end began

This is Skillet’s last album that was any good. Where Collide was sorta relentless, this one is more resigned and introspective, judging from songs like “The Older I Get” and whatnot. There are some really great tunes here, but “Falling Inside The Black” and the overall approach of the record was a dark sign of the joke that they were due to become. Which is a shame really, cuz this album is a rewarding listen to one of Christianity’s oddest contradictions in music.

- Got me hooked on Skillet

I first heard Skillet when I was seven years old at Winter Jam, eight years ago. The songs they performed were all on this album and they were Rebirthing, Falling in the Black, Whispers in the Dark, The Older I Get, and Looking for Angels. I loved their music immediately so when the concert finished, me and my mom went to their merchandise table and bought the Comatose CD. I have absolutely loved Skillet ever since and this, in my opinion, is their best album so far. Don't get me wrong, Rise is an amazing album and Not Gonna Die has the coolest intro ever (you actually miss it if you skip the last minute of the previous track) but I guess the songs in the Comatose album just relate to me better. That and the sentimental value of this album.

- Yours to Hold and Say Goodbye

This album is great. A little of rock but some of them aren’t as rock as others. My 2 favorite songs are “Yours to Hold” and “Say Goodbye”. Those are the songs I love.

- Amazing

The older i get will change your life with a certain person forever

- Just buy it

I discovered this album when I was young, maybe that's why I'm so fond of it. But every song on this is good, worth the buy. Very uplifting for those who need it!

- Powerful Album

This album really touches on some of the struggles we endure in the today's world. It's a well thought out album and it's more alternative rock sound features great violin and cello backings. Hard to beat songs like "Whispers in the Dark" and "Rebirthing", but I think "Looking For Angels" has to be one of the, if not, most underated songs in Skillet's history.

- Amazing Sound!!

This is one of Skillet's best albums. The cello and violin performing a few intro's makes these songs very catchy. Lyrics are very meaningful as well - so five stars all around!!

- Skillet rocks!

This is probably my favourite skillet album

- Excellent

If you liked their later albums or if you are a fan of groups like Three Days Grace, you will appreciate this album. I personally would love to hear them perform with a full orchestra behind them - their songs are catchy, meaningful, and full or power. Some of my favourites include Falling Inside the Black, The Last Night, and Comatose.
