The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream

About Siamese Dream by The Smashing Pumpkins Album

"Siamese Dream" is the second studio album by the American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins, released on July 27, 1993 on Virgin Records. The album fused diverse influences such as shoegazing, dream pop, classic heavy metal, and progressive rock. Despite recording sessions fraught with difficulties and tensions, "Siamese Dream" debuted at number ten on the Billboard charts, sold over four million copies in the U.S. and over six million worldwide, cementing The Smashing Pumpkins as a major force in the alternative rock movement. "Siamese Dream" released four hit singles including "Cherub Rock", "Today", "Disarm", and "Rocket". The Smashing Pumpkins formed in Chicago in 1988. Their debut album "Gish" was released on Caroline Records in 1991 to unexpected success and acclaim. After the release of "Nevermind" later that year, The Smashing Pumpkins were hyped as "the next Nirvana". The band was signed to Caroline Records parent Virgin Records and began recording a follow-up album. Frontman Billy Corgan felt "this great pressure to make the next album set the world on fire." The immense pressure to succeed intensified an already problematic situation: drummer Jimmy Chamberlin was undergoing an increasingly severe addiction to heroin, guitarist James Iha and bassist D'arcy Wretzky had recently ended their romantic relationship, and Corgan, aside from battles with weight gain and suicidal depression, was suffering from his worst-ever bout of writer's block. "Siamese Dream" was recorded mainly between December 1992 and March 1993. The band relocated to Triclops Studios in Marietta, Georgia for the album sessions, so they could avoid local friends and distractions, and to cut Chamberlin off from his known drug connections. Butch Vig reprised his role as producer after working on their debut album "Gish". After he suffered a nervous breakdown, Corgan began visiting a therapist. Consequently his lyrics became more explicit about his troubled past and his insecurities. "Today" was the first song written by Corgan for "Siamese Dream". He played the self-recorded demo to Vig, and received a positive reaction. Soon afterward, executives from Virgin Records came to observe the band after hearing about their problems, but were pleased with the demo and did not soon return to the studio. The reaction from the executives only served to put more stress on Corgan. Corgan worked overtime, practically living in the studio for the recording of "Siamese Dream"—he and Vig would sometimes work on a 45-second section of music for two days, working 16-hour days for weeks at a time to achieve the sound Corgan wanted. Corgan's desire for musical perfection put further strain on the already-frayed relationships between the band members. Vig later recalled, "D'arcy would lock herself in the bathroom, James wouldn't say anything, or Billy would lock himself in the control room." Corgan often overdubbed Iha's and Wretzky's parts with his own playing. Wretzky stated that Corgan only performed most of the guitar and bass parts because he could lay them down in recording easier and with far fewer takes. While Chamberlin performed all drum parts on the album, he would disappear for days on drug benders that caused everyone to fear for his life. After one incident where the drummer had disappeared for two or three days, Corgan "put the hammer down", according to Vig, and had Chamberlin perform the drum part for "Cherub Rock" until his hands bled. Due to Corgan's urging, Chamberlin checked into a rehab clinic. Corgan told Spin later that year, "You know, I gave them a year and a half to prepare for this record... I'm surrounded by these people who I care about very much, yet they continue to keep failing me." Corgan explained that he began to take the actions of others personally; he said, "If you really think about it, of course, someone doesn't do the job because they're lazy, or they don't think it's important. But I took it as, 'You're not worth going home and working on the song.'" Virgin began to grow impatient with the album's recording as it went over budget and became behind schedule. The band, however, would not let the company cut corners if it meant compromising the sound. By the time recording was completed, Corgan and Vig felt too emotionally exhausted to mix the record. Corgan suggested that engineer Alan Moulder mix the album, due to his work on "Loveless" by My Bloody Valentine. Moulder booked two weeks in a studio to mix the album; the mix ended up taking 36 days to complete. Eventually, the album was finished after four months and $250,000 over budget. "Siamese Dream" was released on July 27, 1993. The following week it debuted at number ten on the Billboard charts. Stories of the album's recording had circulated in the music press. Corgan admitted there was some truth to accusations of tyrannical behavior, though he felt the press misunderstood the situation. Entertainment Weekly gave the album a "B" rating; reviewer David Browne praised the band for living up to industry expectations of being the "next Nirvana" and compared "Siamese Dream" favorably to Nirvana's "Nevermind". Browne concluded, "In aiming for more than just another alternative guitar record, Smashing Pumpkins may have stumbled upon a whole new stance: slackers with a vision." Critic Simon Reynolds disagreed; he wrote in his review for The New York Times that "fuzzed-up riffs and angst-wracked vocals are quite the norm these days, and Smashing Pumpkins lacks the zeitgeist-defining edge that made Nirvana's breakthrough so thrilling and resonant." Robert Christgau of the Village Voice gave the album a three star honorable mention, selecting "Geek U.S.A." and "Today" as highlights. "Siamese Dream" earned The Smashing Pumpkins their first Grammy Award nominations. The album was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album, and the group was nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal at the Grammy Awards of 1994. The album is frequently included in lists of the best albums of the 1990s — the Alternative Press ranked it fourth, Pitchfork Media ranked it 18th, and Spin ranked it 23rd. In 2003, the album was ranked number 360 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The artwork for the album was initially going to be created by an outsider artist, but after a series of disagreements with the label, Corgan was forced to step in at the last minute. The album booklet, composed of old photographs of both strangers and Corgan's family members with lyrics handwritten on top, was assembled by Corgan and his wife the day after their wedding. Corgan was not satisfied with the results. The first pressing of the CD contained a 20-page booklet, with a separate page devoted to each song's lyrics and accompanying photograph; later pressings contained a four-panel fold-out liner with thumbnails of each picture. In 1999, Virgin records reissued the album with the original 20-page booklet. Shortly after the Pumpkins reformed in 2007, Corgan posted a message to the band's blog saying that they were "looking for girls from "Siamese Dream" album cover... As you all know, they were quite young when the photo was taken. They are not conjoined anymore, as far as we know." In 2018, the band revealed the girls were Ali Laenger and Lysandra Roberts with a picture posted to social media and an accompanying video featuring the now 32 year old women. The album was also released as a shaped wooden box set (aka Siamese Dream Collectors Edition) with metal hinges limited to only 1,000 copies which contains the UK HUT CD album housed in a recess with individually-numbered silver metal embossed plate at the side and a 20-page booklet housed in a similar recess in the lid. Though the CD itself and the booklet are official and genuine, the wooden box is not an official Virgin (US) or HUT (UK) release.

Nuff Said.

- My life was not the same

First time I saw this cd , I was in 7th grade back in 98..... From there on my life was never the same! I fell in love with his voice! I loved the complete album, track 1- track13...... At 13 years old I promised myself I would see him in concert and at 5 months pregnant I stood for 2 hours straight waiting for the pumpkins to perform at the weenie roast back in 07, such a awesome experience, I became a fan for life all thanks to this album!!!

- Oohhh Billy!

This album to me, is what Led Zepplin II was to my dad - my generations quintessential rock!

- One of my favorite albums of all time!

I never get tired of listening to this album. A stellar performance from Smashing Pumpkins!

- My favorite album I've ever listened to

I really wish I was alive when this was popular; this album is just simply the best.

- Great album from start to finish!

This album is great! It just brings me back to my childhood, when I used to listen to it over and over again lol! Just dusted off all of my old music and realized the CD I used to upload onto my library must have been scratched, so I bought it on iTunes again. Really happy to listen to this music again :)

- The best.

By far my favorite album of all time. amazing. The absolute best from all of them.

- Fly...

...real fly.

- Epic

There are 2 smashing pumpkin albums that sum up how hard they rock and this is 1.

- Another Best of All Time

Thank You Smashing Pumpkins….. Genius. Perfection. ~Love & Light~

- Amazing

This is an example of art in it's highest form. Excellent writing, recording, producing... the layering of sound is staggering and leads me through an ethereal, emotional journey.

- AMAZING.

Best of Smashing Pumpkins' catalog and a place to start for new fans. LOVE "Cherub Rock," "Today," and "Mayonaise." Great from top to bottom.

- 6 stars

Best album front to back. Period. Listening through headphones gives an amazing experience. Genius.

- Best SP album

Yep you heard it here better than melon collie and infinite sadness. However, I do have a special place In my heart for Adore.

- An absolute towering achievement

This album blew everybody's minds in the 90s and still sounds great today. Incredible production, playing and songwriting.

- Overrated

Far from brilliant, the Pumpkins are overrated once again with this album. Siamese Dream features the same ole Pumpkins that you can find on pretty much any other SP album. Decent-to-good guitars and unintelligible/nasal vocals. Corgan's voice often sounds like a goat being castrated. Disarm and Today boast the clearest vocals on the album and they are also the album's best tunes - coincidence? I'm definitely just a fair weather Pumpkins fan and not a deep-cuts kind of guy. In general, if their song has been on the radio I tend to like it. If it's not considered a hit I can't support keeping it in my library. Overall this album is mostly just painful to hear minus 3 songs. Don't get me wrong, most songs have their moments, but those moments don't seem to last for a whole song save the 3 big hits. I can't justify keeping songs just for the occasional good guitar riff. There are only two good songs on this album in Today and Disarm, and even they are still only 3 star quality. It's not good when "pretty good" is your album's best moment. Both Today and Disarm are top 5 Pumpkin's hits all time and they still only clock in at 3 star quality. There's only one other keeper on this album in Cherub and that is only 2 star quality. All the rest are throwaways. I'm not sure if "bloated" is the word to use here, but I do feel that this album could have been whittled down to a decent 5 track ep.

- Great Album

Just outright rocking album for their second album it’s timeless, classic, rock. I love it

- How is this classic anything less than 5 stars

How can anyone give this anything less than 5 stars. This is bread and butter classic alt. rock. Respect that if it weren’t for Nirvana, Alice and Chains, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins and the likes… we’d still be listening to Poison and GnR.

- Great album.

Great album. The melody is nice and it has a mix of awesome shoegazing and alternative metal sounds. One thing that annoys me is over the past 2-3 days, the most popular songs kept changing to Cherub Rock then Today then Disarm and so on. But still, great album

- What a great album

This is music . Let the young ones listen to this who don't know . Show them pearl jam , nirvana , Alice in chains , sound garden , red hot chili peppers .

- Best album known to music history

Honestly this album is straight up gold, it has the best physicadelic but heart felt feel too it, I really recommend the song mayonaise, hummer, and disarm if u wanna discover the smashing Pumpkins

- A generation defining album

The most underrated band of the 90's.

- Best album ever made by anyone!

The title says it all!! Love you @ The real Willcorg (William Corgan)

- 16 again

16 years old-- I knew when I bought this CD ✨at a record store✨ in 1993 and popped it into that Sony boombox for the first listen-through, that this album would be indelible in rock history. Every track is perfectly-produced, harnessing that clean, yet chaotic sound that the Pumpkins mastered. I can always listen to the entire record without the urge to skip, and when "Hummer" plays, I am instantly transported back to age 16. It just keeps getting more delicious every time. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

- An amazing artistic achievement

Simply put, this is one of the 10 best rock albums ever made. Timeless, artistic and awesome.

- Beast

- The album that changed everything...

I can say for a fact that I really did not have much of a clue what truly great music was until I listened to this album. The first time I heard Cherub Rock I was absolutely stunned and blown away...I thought “I had no idea a guitar could sound like this!” I just knew I had to have more. This is my second favorite album of all time just behind Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, but this album has a special place with me as the album that showed me what true greatness is. Top 5 tracks for me are... 5. Luna 4. Today 3. Disarm 2. Mayonaise 1. Cherub Rock

- Smashing Pumpkins

Timeless!

- When Billy was the Goat

This is only one of the greatest rock albums made of all time, let alone in the last 30 years!

This is by far their best. I must've bought this album 10 times over due to people borrowing it and not giving it back. Truly powerful.

- Born in the late 70's?

Thank goodness for digital music. I wore this cassette out listening to it in high school! Great album of my generation!

- A Great Piece of Art!

This is one of the those albums that was a bit under appreciated when it came out but now is revered as one of the best rock albums. Deservedly so...

- Fantastic!!!!

Easily one of the greatest albums of the 90's!! Fantastic from beginning to end. Buy this album it's worth it.

- 🔥

I was introduced to this group in 96-97 an ive loved this group every since brings back those high school days with my best friend

- Musically, the album is a masterpiece, but the lyrical quality does not rise to the same level.

Smashing Pumpkins released Siamese Dream during a rebirth of rock in the early nineties. Competition during this time was intense; with artists trying to balance integrity and accessibility in a way that had not been explored before in mainstream rock. The album reminds me of a time in the band's career when they could fit into both the indie rock and pop radio molds. The album contains several distinct pop songs (Cherub Rock, Today, Disarm); but they are written with an indie aesthetic that makes them just unique enough to not fit the standard pop form. Musically, the album is a masterpiece, but the lyrical quality does not rise to the same level. Siamese Dream blends shoe-gaze, pop, and psychedelia in a way that is familiar, but new. Each track is memorable, and the individual songs also work well as a whole. Every song seems to have its own niche within the context of the album. No track feels the same, but is produced with the same rock aesthetic and tone, making the album feel coherent. The tone of the guitars is heavy, syrupy fuzz, but the mix does not sound like metal. The album is very well-produced, with each track having many layers of instruments, so that the listener can find something new each time. The sound quality is great, and the instruments that are meant to be distinguished from the rest can be heard clearly. There are a few stray moments - Spaceboy includes a clip from what sounds like therapy talk radio, Silverf... contains the line "this take, don't give a f..." with some loose guitar noodling at the end, and Sweet Sweet does not seem to be a finished song. These examples would be fine on a lo-fi record, but Siamese Dream was written to be a masterpiece, and these moments seem silly in the context of a well-written, well-produced album. Vocally, as the main instrument for many of the songs, the singer's voice is an asset. It fits well with the music, and the tone evokes emotion. Lyrically, the album does not fare well. There are a select few songs where the lyrics come together (Cherub Rock, Disarm, Luna), but many of the songs seem to be random thoughts, not meant to be read outside the context of a single verse. Also, many of the lyrics contradict themselves within the song, making for mixed messages and confusing meaning, and are too abstract to make sense ("bleed in your own light, dream of your own life, I miss me, I miss everything I’ll never be" from Rocket; "faith lies in the ways of sin, I chased the charmed but I don’t want them anymore" from Hummer). I understand that many artists want to encourage personal interpretation, but the lyrics are so vague that it is difficult to relate or interpret them except for a few specific songs. The album lacks depth due to the lyricism. Compared with other major albums of this era (Nevermind, Ten, Superunknown, Blood Sugar Sex Magik), Siamese Dream ranks as one of the best in Alternative Rock, if not the best (I am not including the cultural impact of Nevermind in this assessment). It is also an enormous step forward from its predecessor, Gish, which was released a mere two years earlier. In comparison, Siamese Dream has the same virtuoso performances, but with more memorable, emotional content. It was as if the band played high school varsity on Gish, skipped college, and went directly into the professional field on Siamese Dream. If you do not care about lyrics, this is a five-star album. For me, lyrical quality must match musical quality to get five stars. On a musical level, Siamese Dream is a classic album, and one of the all-time best albums in Rock.

- Still great!!!

Love it

- Keep the album art "original", iTunes!

Good 5 star songs

- #1

Nothing will ever top this album. Thank you Pumpkins.

- Greatest Smashing Pumpkins

Look no further for the best and most complete Smashing Pumpkins album. Top to bottom this is the prime of what the band was. Must have. As good as any music from that time period. And better then the crap on the radio these days. Long Live the 90s.

- this and gish

The only two SP albums you need are this one and Gish. And on a side note, I met Jimmy Chamberlin once, and he was a really nice guy.

- Best album

Siamese dream is the best album ever (in my opinion). It's soft at some points, and fast and loud at others.

- Wish I was alive at this time

Amazing from start to finish

- The greatest album of the 90’s.

This is my all time favorite album. It is truly perfection. “Mellon Collie” is a close second.

- 9.5/10

Easily one of the best albums ever produced. I can't believe my ears as I listened to the whole track, it was honestly beautiful. Songs that get over looked (ex hummer, rocket and space boy ) because of lack of popularity are honestly amazing. Long story short this album is worth the full price tag it is a master piece.

- A timeless album

Every song is unique. This album marked a turning point in alternative rock music. Long live the Pumpkins!

- Unforgettable

Possibly the best album of the 90's

- classic

classic alt rock from the 90s if not the best album it was one of the best thats for sure. Buy this album :)

- Outstanding!

This was the first Pumpkins album I bought back in 2001, and it’s stood the test of time. Listening back, I still hear all the things I loved: the big rock sound on tracks like Today or Cherub Rock that drops to softer, gentler crooning on songs like Sweet and Luna.
