I heard the Stokowsky Pictures at an Exhibition playing on XM Radio last week. I was just about to change the channel, thinking, "How many times have I heard this?" But, I quickly realized this was something different, and that Stokowsky was on to something. I downloaded this album and have really enjoyed listening to it. While the Gates of Kiev might be a little less exciting than the Ravel, I'm not sure that it might be more true to Mussorgsky. Anyway, this is a good album and one worth owning.

The sound is crisp but warm, the BSO is spectacular under Serebrier, and Stokowski's transcriptions are inventive and entertaining. The Boris Godunov 'symphonic synthesis' is a treat whether you know the opera or not, and Stokowski's transcription of 'Pictures' is better, in my own humble opinion, than Ravel's. Not for nothing did Gramophone name this disc its Recording of the Month for the recent 'Awards' issue (Nov/05). Highly recommended from an addicted classical/opera collector.
