Black Sabbath - Master of Reality

About Master of Reality by Black Sabbath Album

Master of Reality is the third album by the British heavy metal band Black Sabbath, released in 1971. It is sometimes noted as the first stoner rock album. Master of Reality was certified double platinum after having sold over 2 million copies. The slow and heavy songs that compose most of the album are interspersed with quiet ballads written by Tony Iommi. Two of these, "Embryo" and "Orchid", are short instrumentals serving as interludes. The third, "Solitude", is much longer in comparison and features Ozzy Osbourne's soft, woeful vocals. Unusually, the lyrics of the song "After Forever" written by Terry "Geezer" Butler , focus entirely on Christian themes. At the time, some viewed Black Sabbath as Satanists due to their dark sound, image and lyrics. Similarly, the song "Lord of this World" has lyrics that deal with Satan mocking those who unwittingly follow him. It was released as a single along with "Fairies Wear Boots" in 1971." The song "Solitude" showcases Tony Iommi's multi-instrumental talents, featuring him playing the guitar, flute and piano. The album opener, "Sweet Leaf", is a song about cannabis. "Children of the Grave" was written about war, peace and revolution.

- laughable

i laugh in the face of the one and two stars. this is the best sabbath by far. every track is insane.

- Well then

Itunes decided to just delete hundreds of reviews bc nobody knows. Besides that, this album is a masterpiece. A legendary album that needs no introduction.

- Doom Metal

This album is a heavier album than the previous releases, and trades the bluesy, evil sound for a doom metal sound. Children of the grave is my favorite songs on the album, and is early speed metal. Other standouts are sweet leaf and into the void, which is an early doom metal song. I recommend that you buy this album.

- Classic Metal Album

This Album is a Classic Metal Album🤘

- Best Sabbath album!!!

This is by far the best Sabbath album. "Lord of this world" & "into the void" are masterpieces. If had to pick one album to listen to for the rest of your life, please make this it!

- Awesome.

Pure Sabbath. Love it. Great for getting work done.

- Their best..

If I had to choose one record.

- Black Sabbath -Master Of Reality

WOW! Finally it's here and I think I found it FIRST! Could someone lend me $100.00? and I will have to call in sick at work..I think I still have the 8- Track around here somewhere.......TURN IT UP LOUD WITH LOTS OF BASS

- Hurray

Finally here - one of the greatest albums ever!

- My favorite Sabbath album

Out of their entire catalogue, this one has always been my favorite. "After Forever" and "Children of the Grave" are big highlights. Add to that they're only charging $5.99? I can't pass this up. Neither should you.

- You guys feel like you're floating?

Essential. One of the greatest albums ever. Desert island material here.

- Finally on iTunes!!!

The black sabbath catalog is complete after all the years now we need def leppard and the new wave of British Heavy metal chapter is over

- A true classic

Every single song on this album is amazing and just chugs along. Songs like solitude, orchid, and embryo are nice melodic breaks from the doomy awesomeness that follows.

- about time

This is much needed and just in time. Sadly, much of the best Sabbath music was not as easy to find as it should have been before this I-tunes release.

- west kennesaw

I bought this album in 1971 just as I became a senior in high school. Sweet Leaf is the song that I remember, my friends and I thought this song was so cool and heavy, heavy, heavy! Listening to Master of Reality again after many years, I had forgotten how GREAT this album is. Sweet leaf is not even the best song on the album, with the likes of great songs like "Children of the Grave", "Solitude", and "Into the Void". Tony Iommis' guitar playing is fantastic. Make sure you have a good pair of headphones, and as many of the other comments say, "Play It Loud"!!!!!!

- Finally

I found Black Sabbath's early albums that iTunes put on now. I was looking for these albums before on iTunes but they never showed until today. I can download these songs on my playlist.

- Amazing

This along with Paranoid are their best albums. Best tracks are "After Forever", "Children of the Grave", and "Solitude".

- Tony Iommi Recalls the Best and Worst of Black Sabbath

“We tried recording ‘Into the Void’ in a couple of different studios because Bill [Ward] just couldn’t get it right. Whenever that happened, he would start believing that he wasn’t capable of playing the song. He’d say, ‘To hell with it—I’m not doing this!’ There was one track like that on every album, and ‘Into the Void’ was the most difficult one on Master of Reality. “The coughing that opens the album is actually me! Ozzy had pulled out a joint, and I nearly choked to death on the bloody thing—and they recorded it! I didn’t have any idea that it would end up on the record.”

- Buy the album, not select tracks

This is my first time listening to the whole album front to back, and some songs I never heard before. Young folk like me: buy the whole album, sit down and listen to the whole album. It's an experience very unlike modern records where basically every song is a single; no, here they're all great songs but they're better together. Don't just turn on a song quick while you have a couple minutes in the car. Go to your room, put on a nice pair of headphones, let the music drown out all distractions, and just let it take you on a journey. That's how you listen to classics like this.

- BLACK SABBATH - MASTER OF REALITY

This is one of my favorite metal albums of all time. It's instantly 5 stars its so awesome. It's better on vinyl though because the bass.

- Great iTunes editor notes!

The iTunes Editor notes says it all! I never even bothered to read them except for this album!

- So good

Only album to ever beat this is paranoid.

- YES YES YES!!!

This is the album that defined Black Sabbath and doom metal alike. Also laid the foundation for white metal. Thank you Black Sabbath \m/

- Godfathers of metal's work

Key tracks: sweet leaf, children of the grave, into the void

- SABBATH!!!

If you don't own this album you should! Such a great album from such an amazing band!

- King Sabbath

What a follow up to Paranoid, I remember these guys as a kid and they were on fire back then, and still are this stuff is killer!

- Amazing

So many bands sound like them but there is only one . Sit down young kids and see where your slayer and metallicas come from .

- Awesome

As of right now, I've only listened to their first four albums, and I think this might be their best. Tracks 1-7 were awesome, and 8 was good. Buy this album.

- my first black sabbath album

except it was the castle comm. remaster with an extra live song of children of the grave. and when i picked it up i just took it on a whim, wow i got lucky, the second greatest album i've ever listened to

- Hey guy

Buy the whole album. Its worth it. I bought the whole paranoid album and it didnt dissappoint at all. Im about to do the same here.

- "Metal"

I first heard Black Sabbath back in 2002 and everyone always said how they were “Metal” I instantly fell in love then went to search for more “metal” music and was sadly disappointed no other “metal” band even compares or sounds the same. So I guess I’m not a “metal” fan but a black sabbath fan. Black sabbath must be its own genre.

- Best album of all times.

1971 party album.

- Awesome riffs

The riffs on this album are god-like

- Buy this one on vinyl, no bass in digital.

This is indeed an awesome record. I would strongly urge people to buy this on vinyl. I have most of their early stuff on CD, and the low end bass gets completely lost on ALL digital formats (cd and otherwise). otherwise it's a fun listen. After forever is a personal favorite.

- THIS is heavy

Let's put this is context. This album still stands up as one of the heaviest metal albums ever. And it was released in…wait for it.…1971! These blokes invented metal. Period. End of story. NO other band at that time was anywhere near this heavy. Zeppelin? Please. They just played the blues really loud and ripped off every blues song out there. Sabbath morphed the blues into something altogether different and sinister and made it their own. Plus all of their tunes were original. Into The Void? Friggin unreal.

- Thank God

We've been needing the early studio albums Master Of Reality and those among it are die hard classics they invented a genre which has flourished hugely let's hope Tony Iommi recovers from his bout of cancer we cannot lose another hero

- Old Favorite

I have owned this in 8 Track, vinyl, cassette, CD and now digital. Awesome, awesome, awesome!

- Can't get better than this!

All these songs with Tony's riffs and Ozzy's lyrical sound to the bass of Geezer and drums of The one and only Bill ward! Great Album! Songs lyrically the beginning of waft made sabbath Great! Buy this Now!!

- They Dont Make Them Like This Anymore

This album is just a fantastic journey. The album is solid from beginning to end and it should be listened to in its entirety to fully appreciate the experience. The dark guitar riffs and vocals are just outstanding. I have owned this record on vinyl, cassette and now iTunes. Sabbath at its best!!!

- Children of the grave rules

Must have for a true black sabbath fan my personal favorite

- Sounds better than the CD

The CD mix of Sweet Leaf was regrettably flat. I was pleased to hear this iTunes release has apparently been remastered!

- Some of my Favorite Sabbath songs are on this album!

Arguably the greatest Sabbath album. Sweet Loaf and After Forever are two of my favoirte Sabbath songs. I love this album. You will too.

- Essential listening.

My personal favorite Black Sabbath album.
