Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

About Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath Album

Black Sabbath's first release, almost universally known as "Heavy Metal's first album". The guys from Birmingham, England shocked, scared and enthused million with their new sound - a blend of bluesy, soulful riffs with heavy, distorted tones. Released on Friday the 13th February 1970 by Vertigo Records, Black Sabbath reached number eight on the UK Album Chart. Following its US release in May 1970 by Warner Bros. Records, the album reached number 23 on the Billboard 200, where it remained for over a year, selling a million copies. While the album was a commercial success, it was widely panned by critics. In a review for Rolling Stone magazine, rock critic Lester Bangs felt Sabbath was "just like Cream! But worse". Bangs dismissed Black Sabbath as a "a shuck—despite the murky songtitles and some inane lyrics that sound like Vanilla Fudge paying doggerel tribute to Aleister Crowley, the album has nothing to do with spiritualism, the occult, or anything much except stiff recitations of Cream cliches" In 2003, the album was ranked number 238 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Q magazine (8/00, p.126) later included it as one of the Best Metal Albums of All Time, claiming that " was to prove so influential it remains a template for metal bands three decades on. The band's signature song remains the scariest of all heavy metal songs." Track listing European edition 1. "Black Sabbath" – 6:16 2. "The Wizard" – 4:24 3. "Behind the Wall of Sleep" – 3:38 4. - Best guitar album ever!

I've watched documentaries in the past about this album. It was recorded in 12 hours of studio time. Most of it sounds like the best blues rock band ever playing in a bar. The last track alone is packed with so many great riffs it's incredible! You have to buy this!11

- Their first and their best

This is a beautiful piece of artwork. It was like they were discovering everything they were capable of doing all at once. One commenter noted that he was bothered by some of the tracks because he couldn't tell what genre of music they were playing. Well that's the point. They were doing everything- blues, rock, jazz, metal- all at once and mixed into single tracks. Just a wonderful listen and my personal Sabbath favorite. Get it.

- Outstanding

I bought this when I was a senior in high school (1970-1971) and loved it. I wrote a paper for an english assignment on the premise that the song Black Sabbath was about professional football, played every week on sabbath day. I read the paper in class while playing the song and made line by line comparisons. Got an “A,” of course.

- black sabbath

- Classic Metal album🤘

Classic Metal album🤘

- The START of Metal

When Black Sabbath released their self titled first album they had officially begun Metal music. For sure there were other hard rocking artists like Zepplin and Cream and Deep Purple but nobody had the dark, heavy gloomy sound of Sabbath. This album is worth purchasing if for nothing else for the history of it. It represents a totally new direction in music. It is also worth purchasing because it is without a doubt an awesome album.

- Straight up METAL

The best album of all time.

- what is this i find before me

my friend jon and i would drive around smoking weed and blasting this tape, great times and great music. if you are a young and tender give this one a listen then look up merciful fate blue oyster cult the misfits and thin lizzy you will not regret spending an afternoon with these folks

- One hell of a album !!!

How come there isn't NIB

- No N.I.B or Evil Woman?????

Seriously this album is incomplete without these tracks...iTunes please explain why they are excluded!!!

- A great album

But 1 star for the price: i mean come on! 9.99 for a 5 song album? i dont think so, lower it by 4 bucks then i'll buy it. Long live Black Sabbath a pionerring grop in early Metal

- Amazing

Game changer . Every metal bands influence right here people . 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻

- Classic

Although I think this album is slightly overrated, this is a legendary album. I personally don’t like Wicked World, but if the Itunes version had Evil Woman (ik the Euro version does) I’d give it 5 stars. Still amazing nonetheless.

- Close my eyes and I'm transported back in time!

Even after 45+ years this album sends chills down my spine-- the first time I heard BLACK SABBATH they were not the top bill but the moment they began to play, you knew they were destined for greatness. Their music was (and still is) hypnotic, wow can they play...more than 40 years since I first saw them at the debut of this album (which, shame on iTunes for BUTCHERING )-I have the original album and this is only part of the it - the omission of the other songs changes it drastically -- Once You see them perform, it's hypnotic at very LEAST.......when "Black Sabbath" (title song) began.......you entered a dark realm of the mind- it was scary, freaky and phenomenal --they took you to the darkest corners of your mind......Their first is still one of my all time favorites ..if you love Heavy......then you MUST own "Black Sabbath"!!! A true classic which 40+ years later is still as captivating as it was in 70's.....a true classic which spans the realm of time. One of the all time GREATS-- I was so thrilled to see the album finally on iTunes. I am disappointed that it did not contain all the songs on the original album ........ Don't go changing an album this great .......(to those whom remastered it !). You just shouldn't "mess" with greatness ......the omitted music was there for a purpose!!! (Although it is great to at least get to listen to a portion of the "journey" Sabbath takes us on) listening to them live was like taking a dark journey - scared you to pieces, but you hypnotically followed anyway......

- Real Music

I'm 14 years old and I'm the only person that listens to this stuff. I really wish I had lived during this time because this is what real music is. Not all the crap from today. Long Live Black Sabbath!

- Awesome album

Best songs are The Wizard, Behind the wall of sleep and NIB

- Blown away

I listened to this whole thing front to back, and it was awesome. A horror movie was playing in my head as I listened to “Black Sabbath” and “The Wizard”. Deserves more recognition than Paranoid, since it is more roomier and louder.

- This is a landmark in the evolution of music!

Althogh I waould give the number one spot to their album Paranoid, this one was waht started their fifty year career, and breathed life into music. I feel like I am the only one at my age who still listens to this music. Overall, Black Sabbath is perfect to my ear, not too heavy or light, Ozzy's voice is spectacular. Sabbath for the win!

- the wizard

this song is about gandelf from the hobbit/lord of the rings, trippy how this album is from 1970 yet the movies are being made now

- Buy the album, not select songs

This is my first time listening to the whole album front to back, and some songs I never heard before. Young folk like me: buy the whole album, sit down and listen to the whole album. It's an experience very unlike modern records where basically every song is a single; no, here they're all great songs but they're better together. Like the 14-minute monster that closes the album; not something you turn on quick while you have a couple minutes in the car. Go to your room, put on a nice pair of headphones, let the music drown out all distractions, and just let it take you on a journey. That's how you listen to classics like this.

- Dissapointing

Im highly disappointed in the fact that half the album is missing. Especially my favorite, N.I.B. What happened? How could you not include the full album?

- Yay

This is an amazing album I can't believe they finally got it! If you don't already have this album I recommend you buy it and all of the other classic black sabbath albums!!!

- N.I.B. ** is ** on this CD, Track # 3

N.I.B. ** is ** on this CD. It's Track # 3 on here, which for some reason lists 4 songs All together.

- Only 3 songs for $9.99 ?

Where is the rest of the album?? C'mon iTunes! You can do better than this! And how in the world are you people writing glowing reviews without acknowledging this? Write a review about what you're actually getting here. This is not the same album you're lovingly remembering from days gone by. In closing... Go buy the CD instead!

- This album is

the root of all evil.

- Pure Brilliance!

This is one of the greatest rock albums of all-time. This started Heavy Metal. The historical value cannot be overlooked - buy this album, put on headphones and crank it up! Brilliant!!

- Confused?

For any one confused out there this is the American version that came out. Evil Woman is on the European version.

- JUNK

Some people never grow up.

- Not the whole album

This isn't even close to the original album. So many missing songs. Apple shouldn't be allowed to sell this as the "Black Sabbath" album if all the original songs aren't there. Disappointing.

- No Evil Woman

Evil Woman or not, this album is still great. Both the "Black Box," released in 2004, and the "Complete Albums," released in 2014 have "Evil Woman" as track 6, although on the original UK album, it replaced "Wicked World" altogether. "Evil Woman" was actually the first Sabbath single with "Wicked World" as the b-side. Not sure why "Wicked World" replaced "Evil Woman" on the US release. Kind of disappointed that it's not on iTunes, just for the benefit of those of you who have never heard the song, which was a cover. "Evil Woman" was originally performed by Crow. "The best of Crow" is available on iTunes, and "Evil Woman" is the first track. I like Sabbath's version slightly better, but this is because I heard it long before the original, which is almost as good. Anyway, there's nothing else I can say about this record that hasn't already been said by the other reviewers. This record is just great, and I am confident you will love it.

- AWESOME!!!

Greatest album ever. To those of you who say where is "NIB", it's on track 3. To those of you who say where is "warning", it is on track five

- This is not a complete album. Evil Woman is left out

The album is 5 stars, my favorite songs are Black Sabbath, The Wizard, Evil Woman, Wicked World, N.I.B. This is a great album, but the way iTunes combines some songs and leaves out "Evil Woman"..... Try getting a cd, a tape or something.

- AWESOME!

This is just a great album where the best music genre was created!

- awesome!

awesome. Bill, Geezer, Tony and Ozzy at their finest. love love love this record.

- Awesome

Every song is great. Do not just buy one song. Buy the whole album.

- It's about time....

......they put this album on iTunes. I've been checking for the last couple of years to no avail and suddenly....yesssss its here. Don't bother ordering a hard copy of the disc. Sound quality isnt any better. The wizard has been one of my favorite tracks since I was a kid. As in 4 years old. Way better than my sesame street records. Dio sabbath doesn't compare to this.

- Issues

iTunes butchers another album by putting 2 "album only" songs which include NIB so don't worry...it's sad how greedy and already multi billion dollar company can get...

- Heavy Duty

Every track is like a stone golem slowly emerging from the waters of a tar swamp.

- Sabbath. End of debate.

There's rock. There's hard rock. There's metal. Somewhere, beyond all that, is Sabbath. This one started it all, and nobody else even comes close. Do yourself the favor of listening to this from start to finish - with some killer headphones.

- To the 4 morons who gave this 4 stars

Keep on listening to Steel Panther. How this masterpiece is less than 5 stars by anyone who considers themselves a metalhead is beyond me. The song Black Sabbath is still one of the top 5 songs of all-time to this day, while N.I.B. is in the top 25. If you’re a fan of Doom, Stoner or Sludge metal, this is where it all started. Essential and while I like the Dio Sabbath best, this is their greatest piece of work.

- It's about time

This cover scared the crap out of me when I bought it🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘sabbath rules 🤘🤘🤘🤘

- England release is different??

We should have the option to choose between both versions. Evil Woman on the other. Plus no medleys...

- Great album but...

This album is great no doubt. However, where’s evil woman. Come on!

- A Solid Beginning, to be Later Perfected

This album has its ups and downs. The opener, Black Sabbath, is a true metal classic that reigns down to our day. As it opens with a hopeless sounding thunderstorm, it soon delivers the very first Heavy Metal song. What's even more impressive, it still is one of the heaviest songs ever. It's next number, "The Wizard", possibly the album highlight, gives even more hope that this album will be 100% genuine originality from a band that no one had yet heard of, but soon will. From there, the album slowly disappoints more and more. Yeah, you still have NIB coming, but you'll have to wait through a good 4 and a half minutes of only pretty good music to get there. Wicked World just does not know what it wants to be. A fun bluesy jazz guitar solo? A heavy protest against what is and what should be? An atmospheric guitar-only interlude song? Back to a light hearted blues-jazz solo? The last 16 minutes are by far the most overlook-able. A great, creepy acoustic opening, that soon becomes an array of 4 minute straight up blues songs, all starting one after the other. Buy this album if you're already knee deep in Sabbath's discography. Because it's not the best place to start

- Almost awesome

I could've sworn the first album Black sabbath title Black Sabbath had the song N.I.B. I can only find it on the greatest hits that's only thing I see wrong with this I want the original version not the live version

- Funny thing though

They’re actually a Christian metal band.

- The start of it all

Eerie. Haunting. Marvelous heavy riff madness. This is one of my favorite. It seeps into your head and spellbinds you.

- Awesome..but

Where is N.I.B???

- Together

One of my favorite albums of all time. Also auto correct made the together pop up!

- Hello

evil woman

Black Sabbath Wiki

Black Sabbath were an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1968 by guitarist Tony Iommi, drummer Bill Ward, bassist Geezer Butler, and vocalist Ozzy Osbourne. They are often cited as pioneers of heavy metal music. The band helped define the genre with their first three albums Black Sabbath, Paranoid (both 1970), and Master of Reality (1971). Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the band underwent multiple line-up changes, with Iommi being the only constant member throughout its history. After previous iterations of the group – the Polka Tulk Blues Band, and Earth – the band settled on the name Black Sabbath in 1969. They distinguished themselves through occult themes with horror-inspired lyrics and down-tuned guitars. Signing to Philips Records in November 1969, they released their first single, a cover of the Crow song "Evil Woman", in January 1970, and their debut album, Black Sabbath, was released the following month. Though it received a negative critical response, the album was a commercial success, leading to a follow-up record, Paranoid, later that year. The band's popularity grew, and by 1973's Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, critics were starting to respond favourably. This album, along with its predecessor Vol. 4 (1972) and its successors Sabotage (1975), Technical Ecstasy (1976) and Never Say Die! (1978), saw the band explore more experimental and progressive styles. Osbourne first left Black Sabbath in late 1977 and was briefly replaced by Dave Walker. After returning to record Never Say Die!, Osbourne was dismissed from the band a second time in 1979 due to his substance abuse, and was replaced by former Rainbow vocalist Ronnie James Dio, who recorded three albums with the band: Heaven and Hell (1980), Mob Rules (1981) and the live album Live Evil (1982), the last two featuring drummer Vinny Appice replacing Ward. Following Dio and Appice's departures, Iommi and Butler recorded Born Again (1983) with then-former Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan and Ward returning on drums, while the latter was replaced by then-Electric Light Orchestra drummer Bev Bevan on the subsequent tour. Black Sabbath split in 1984, with Iommi assembling a new version of the band the following year. For the next twelve years, the band endured many personnel changes that included vocalists Glenn Hughes (who appeared on 1986's Seventh Star), Ray Gillen and Tony Martin, as well as several drummers (including Cozy Powell) and bassists; of the vocalists during these years, Martin's tenure was the longest, joining the band in 1987 and recording three studio albums before his initial departure in 1991: The Eternal Idol (1987), Headless Cross (1989), and Tyr (1990). That same year, Iommi reunited with Butler, Dio and Appice to record Dehumanizer (1992), though Dio and Appice had both departed again by the end of 1992. Martin returned as vocalist for two more studio albums, Cross Purposes (1994) and Forbidden (1995), and one live album before the band went on a one-year hiatus during 1996. The original line-up of Iommi, Osbourne, Butler and Ward reunited in 1997, releasing a live album, Reunion, in the following year, and continuing to tour sporadically until 2005, most of which saw Black Sabbath headline Osbourne's annual festival tour Ozzfest. The band went on another hiatus in 2006 when the Mob Rules line-up reunited as Heaven & Hell, touring during the late 2000s and releasing its sole studio album, The Devil You Know, in 2009 before disbanding after Dio's death in the following year. The original line-up of Black Sabbath reunited once again in 2011, though Ward departed prior to the recording of their final studio album and 19th overall, 13 (2013). During their farewell tour, Black Sabbath played its final concert in their home city of Birmingham on 4 February 2017. Occasional partial reunions have occurred since, most recently when Osbourne and Iommi performed together at the closing ceremony of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Black Sabbath have sold over 70 million records worldwide as of 2013, making them one of the most commercially successful heavy metal bands. Black Sabbath, together with Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, have been referred to as the "unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-seventies". They were ranked by MTV as the "Greatest Metal Band of All Time" and placed second on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" list. Rolling Stone magazine ranked them number 85 on its "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" list. Black Sabbath were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. They have also won two Grammy Awards for Best Metal Performance, and in 2019, the band received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
