Madonna - Like a Prayer

About Like a Prayer by Madonna Album

Like a Prayer is the fourth studio album by American singer-songwriter Madonna, released on March 21, 1989 by Sire Records. The RIAA certified it Gold, Platinum & Double Platinum on May 23rd 1989 & Quadruple Platinum on July 16th 1997, recognizing four million shipments in the U.S. - making it her seventh best-selling album there. Worldwide, it has sold more than fifteen million copies. Like a Prayer incorporates rock, dance, pop, soul, and funk elements into the album. Rolling Stone magazine hailed it "as close to art as pop music gets". It was recorded in 1988 with collaborators Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray, and also includes a duet with R&B pop singer Prince. It featured the first of several songs throughout her career in which she talked openly about her mother's death, Promise to Try; Madonna even dedicated the album to "my mother who taught me to pray". She also addresses the end of her marriage to actor Sean Penn in the song Till Death Do Us Part. Before the commercial release of the first single and title track, Pepsi decided to use the song as part of their soft drink commercial featuring Madonna. In addition to this, the company had also struck a deal to sponsor her 1990 Blond Ambition Tour. The commercial was aired twice before the release of the music video on MTV. Pepsi had no idea about the controversial content depicted in the video; Madonna witnesses a murder, kisses a black saint, displays stigmata after cutting her palms on a knife, and dances in a field of burning crosses. Religious groups were furious and threatened to boycott Pepsi. They decided the risk was too great, and they cancelled their ad campaign and sponsorship deal, although Madonna got to keep the $5 million in her contract. Due to the high publicity surrounding the controversy, the single soared to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the USA. The album debuted at number eleven, and within three weeks, shot to number one, where it would stay for over a month. Singles Express Yourself and Cherish both made it to number two. Oh Father was her least successful single since 1984, but still became a top twenty hit, peaking at number twenty. Keep It Together reached number eight on the charts, and Dear Jessie was also a hit single in Europe, and had an animated video. According to a list released by Time magazine on November 13, 2006, Like a Prayer is one of the 100 greatest albums of all time. - ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

This album defines her career...

- Singles are great

Only the singles are worth listening to . And Oh Father is a great ballad

- Like a prayer

Simply her best album of all time and my absolute favorite.

- I love her

She is awesome

- Queen of Pop

Madonna will always be the Queen of Pop!!! Like a Prayer was a moment where she tackled the demons of her past, and had people running to the dance floor all at the same time. Not many pop artists can do both; usually, onlt one or the other.

- #1 album of her career

Controversial and stunning! Best of her career!

- Never liked her...

Her voice is terrible...

- Reviewing from CD Copy

My mom had a CD copy of this so i didn't buy it off iTunes, BUT I think people shoule know it is Freaking AMAZING! I LOVE Lady Gaga and Madonna equally, but this albuum dares to speak of topic that even now few artist like to. And she does so acurately, Especially in the song Oh, Father and Promise To Try. They relate so well. I love how she discusses abuse in Till Death Do Us Part, and Religion as well. I think this STILL should be a top seller and very glad people still listen. Long Live Madonna!

- 🕯❤️🎤

My absolute favorite album by Madonna.

- Like a Prayer

By the end of the 80’s Madonna was considered the “Queen of Pop” and this album proved why and was a great way to end her 80’s era. An excellent follow up from her “True Blue” album. I will argue that I wish she had put the 7” versions of her singles on here because it would’ve made the album sound a bit more complete. She pays tribute to the people she lost along the way of her journey. A divorced woman in her early 30s and had such high energy.

- RE-DEFINING MADONNA

Like A Prayer was released amid a controversial blitz – the launch of Madonna's 1989 album was mired down by angry protestors who were angered a certain All-American soft drink company had allied themselves with the fast-polarizing pop figure. Little could anyone have imagined that continuing with the firestorm that would follow her all through to the 1990's Madonna would solidify herself as the media's most talked about figure. Like A Prayer redefined the way the world would perceive of Madonna as an artist – the media would discount her talent and brand her a brilliant marketeer, but like a grand puppeteer, she never had to pull on the strings all that hard to keep our attention. Along with the title track she would follow it up with one of her biggest hits yet, but (again) the video for "Express Yourself" would incite yet another string of protests -- this time from feminists that accused Madonna of being a "poor role model". At its purest Like A Prayer may have some of the best lyrical and musical arrangements of her career -- as an album it would go on to make the lists of the "Top 100 Pop Albums of All Time". It's impossible to disagree with tracks like the vulnerable "Oh Father" and the Prince duet "Love Song", the brilliance of this album shines through and shattered all image of the Material Girl -- she emerged from the late 80's an icon and pop music's most endurable force. Her prayers were finally answered.

- At her very best ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Madonna at her very best; working with the very best in music & video. Her sound is fresh and alive especially back in 89. She could do no wrong. I remember getting my copy back in 89 and thought it was so cool that the album smelled like Patchouli .

- Art perfection 🙏🏾✨

By the greatest of them all.

- 23 years later and still her best

The production and the musical styles are a little dated but this album is the heart and soul of Madonna. The heartfelt emotion on this album grants it immediate access. Madonna has succeeded in making sure the majority of all but two of her albums (Hard Candy and Bedtime stories, I'm lookin' at you....) are full of emotive and energetic listenable songs, but this simply does it better than any of the others. There is not a single song on here to be missed, ballad, dance, pop, even a little pop-rock and soul, it's all here, and that's why this, along with Ray Of Light, is her best album. Take it from a person whos' been a long time fan of Madonna since the mid-80's. Enough said.

- THe ONE albumd THe GRammys ROBBED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No matter what anyone will EVER stay this album is a masterpiece. Madonna dilvers her best vocals, emotions, hurts, and the heart is there. "Like A Prayer" the song and video are dare I say the best work ever done in music hystrory This album isi as art as a gets. Oh Father is amazing, even the video is a masterpeice., and PROMICE TO TRY, was powerful heartbreaking and used at mom mothes funneral. . The grannys cheated Madonna on what is a REAL masterpice of work , it should be undone. BUT THIS album watch the vieso and you will see why the woman is The #ONE artist of all time. LUV MADONNA BUY BUY BUY BUY

- Love!

We need this album remastered!!! One of M's great albums though I personally love True Blue, Erotica and Rebel Heart.

- just like a prayer...

Madonna will take you there. This was her pinnacle. Best music, best costumes, best videos. Best album of the 80s imo. Don't ask, just listen to the magic that is like a prayer

- VERY GREAT SONG

This song reminds me of the old time gospal music in the late 70's and 80's . I just can not get enough of it and I see myself feeling the music and it is very moving! keep up the good work!

- THE BEST !!!

Simply the BEST !!!!

- Great Album - But Needs A Mastered for iTunes

This is one album that I would purchase if Apple remasters the tracks for iTunes.

- Omg

Omg I remember this. She sang this at the Super Bowl :D

- The most important album of the 80s

The songs on this album are flawless. Everything about it's release was just iconic. From the Pepsi controversy to the AIDS Facts sheets included in the album, scented albums, iconic videos, like really iconic.

- madonna at her most personal

in my opinion, her best album. yes, even better than ray of light and confession on a dance floor. from the auditory orgasm of the first track to the intimacy of the last and everything in between. after like a virgin and true blue, this album is where her lyrics were/are mature. and the album production was great. this is one of the few albums I can listen to from beginning to end. buy it. it's an important piece of pop music that all music fans (casual or die hard) should have.

- She'll Take You There

A flawlessly crafted album that found Madonna at one of the first evolutionary transitions of her career. Upbeat, hook-heavy dance pop gems like Express Yourself and Cherish are as catchy as her earlier hits. But deeper, more reflective themes are explored as well, hinting at the direction of things to come. Back in the day, the release of a new Madonna album was truly an Event, for which time itself momentarily stopped. The release of Like A Prayer coincided with my first foray into gay clubbing in Los Angeles and therefore will forever hold a special place in my heart.

- A Masterpiece

I had to buy it to complete my Madonna's collection... this album is full of great sounds I just love it! It is a classic and everyone should have...

- Queen of Pop!

The best!

- Definitely Madonna's most personal moment

Being 13 years old at time of release. I never really understood how truly brilliant and deep this album really is. Until now, revisiting after nearly 25 years. For some odd reason, I decided to revisit this album. Not sure why either? Usually when revisiting a classic album, there's a certain sense of nostalgia being brought back. But after revisiting this album for the first time in 25 years. I can't help but realize the depth of emotion that is brought back up to the surface. Most poignantly of all is Madonna's frank confessional regarding her personal childhood. Laying bare the traumatic emotional scars that once plagued her growing up. (And probably still do till now.) One of the songs that hit me hard in particular is her song "Oh Father". Which could literally could be about my personal life with my own father as well. Proving how universal the concept truly is when faced in the adversity of growing up in a harsh world. Only to realize that maybe we were wrong in our original thoughts of how we dealt with our most personal demons. (I'm still running from my own father.) Other stand out tracks include the gospel title track, the folk-psychedelia of Dear Jessie, the funky drive of Express Yourself. The album may be a cohesive, unabashed moment of Madonna's personal demons. But the messages it expresses are universal in their truths. And that's what makes this album so powerful. Definitely one of Madonna's best if not THE best of her creative peak.

- First Real Taste of M

This is the album that opened my eyes to this living legend. I was in the 9th grade when it was released. True classic album.

- Genius and artistic

Madonna is so unique from anyone in the world and she...is literally a genius, maybe not musically, but emotionally and in her mind her ideas just scream being a genius. She is quite different from anyone in the world. I finally see why she was the lady gaga of the 80s, and still is amazing because she is so different. The best and almost close to art songs are till death do us apart, oh father, and of course like a prayer. Express yourself is amazing And cherish is superb as well. This whole album screams pop artistic genius. She can save you from darkness cause of her vibrant personality and her drive to succeed and she never gives up. She also doesn't give an eff of what people think about her. I honestly think she is a genius. Literally her IQ was 140...

- She's a loser

Horrible person. Horrible singer.

- Where is the 30th anniversary version?

This album is a classic but the extended version of Cherish alone is amazing! Please add the 30th anniversary version of “Like a prayer” to iTunes!

- Masterpiece

This is the best album of the history of music!!!

- Love it!!!!!

Every song on this album is great. I still listen to it as if it was just released

- Masterpiece!

Madonna created a perfect album with Like A Prayer!

- AT THE TOP

a pop classic up

- Jeff Porcaro What else can I say

Oh! My gosh. It seems that everytime I watch a video on my I-pad screen and hear his drums through my headphones. Lovechills run up and down my spine. He knows how to enchant my heart. I can hold these images of him very close and feel the rhythm of his beats. So it goes without saying anything more. From all of his superb session work to being a founding member of Toto. Jeff Porcaro left behind a lasting legacy. Very soon it will be 26 years since his tragic death and everyone throughout the world still mourns his loss. For me it's a deeper hurt because I never got the opportunity to meet him in person many years ago and get an autographed picture. He will always continue to play drums on my heartstrings every night.I will never stop thinking about my Dreamyeyed Angel. 🐱🎻🎧😊🐈😀🎸🎼💿🎹🎤☺️❤️😇💙📀🎷😇💿🎧💜😂😍🎤🐱😊🐯💛😅😿. Te Amo (Which translated from Spanish means) I love you.Till then as always keep playing those drums in Heaven. Our loss is Heavens Gain.

- What's wrong with Express Yourself

Express yourself sounds strange but other than that this is an amazing album

- Like A Prayer

This is a classic must-gave Madonna album! It's a deep album, revealing her feelings about certain situations in her life with beautifully orchestrated lyrics and her state of mind at the time. My favorite songs are Oh Father and Promise To Try, very deep and reflective songs with beautiful lyrics. You should totally buy this album!!!

- Love her

It's still a great song it brings me back

- The best!

Madonna's best album hands down. I can listen to this album over and over again.

- Best

The best music available

- Prince

All the guitar you hear on Act Of Contrition is Prince

- Nice album

I'm from mass and I love this album .

- Goosebumps

"Like A Prayer"...I was only about a 5 year old boy when I first saw and heard this song come on MTV. The feeling it gave me was incredible...especially in the very beginning of how the song opens up...it gave goosebumps all over my body. Years later I still get that feeling. I love Madonna's older stuff oh yes definately "Live to Tell". To this day my favorite song. 80's come back we need you. :)

- Where it began

Still relevant, fun, dance music with the occasional lyrical insight to her life. Paved the way for the current crop of ultra talented divas. Gaga, Britney, Katy are all part of her legacy for women who now dominate power pop. Each a unique tour de force. No Room For Haters.
