- The production is garbage

The production is really off and doesn't fit Aretha. Let's be honest though, Aretha is long past her prime also.

- Where’s the magic?

Aretha is one of the few performers I have watched over the years who have given me goosebumps. There have been moments when she has sung something, and I’ve thought: No one could possibly do this better. And when she has sat down at the piano and accompanied herself, that’s about as close to heaven as I think I’ll ever get. But, as another reviewer pointed out, something about these vocals feel compressed. Every now and then I do get a whiff of auto-tune, which, if it’s true that they used it, makes me ill. Also, the songs just do not feel alive. They feel overproduced, synthetic, computerized. The thing about Aretha was always her rawness, her in-your-face-ness. Hers was a towering talent that could not be touched. Here I feel she has been reduced to a lounge singer. Why is she singing “I’m Every Woman” — unless it’s going to sound better than Chaka’s, or Whitney’s, what’s the point? Same with “I Will Survive” — it does not sound better than Gloria’s. Yes, the title of the album is correct… except, sorry, I do not think Adele has earned the right to be considered or called a “Great Diva.” She is way too young and has miles to go. But otherwise, yes, that’s right; Aretha does indeed sing some great diva classics… but by doing so, it does not also make her a diva. It makes her someone who is singing the songs of other divas. I felt there were interesting directions being taken in “People,” but had the whole thing been acoustic, it would have been a million times better. It all sounds sanitized. I did not feel anything; nothing. It sounds like all the levels have been rolled off. It comes across as being a labored effort and it sounds like a singer past her prime who works in hotels and this is one of her albums that she sells from the piano where she bangs out standards six nights a week. I love Aretha; she is/was one of a kind. But if she makes another album, I hope she will continue to search for unique covers and/or fresh material, and I hope she can go gutsy, meaning all raw, acoustic and untouched. If she cannot do that, then I am not sure she should continue, because she would be messing with her own legendary works. She actually has earned the right to be called DIVA. Listen to her sing “Natural Woman”… she is phenomenal… but not on this album, I am sorry to report.

- No!

Not to disrespect but when you put a artist as great as Adele down and say you can sing better then her, NO!!!!!! You've mistaken your self, Adele won't fade fast like you did because her vocals are amazing no one can top her she's all natural un like this album.

- Fast Forward this one!

I can’t help but say how disappointed I was with this effort. The voice of this shinning star was dimmed beyond belief. I have never jumped an Aretha song before and on this album I had to skip, skip, skip forward for my own good. The arrangements are candied and Aretha’s voice has been stripped of the richness that touches me and I’m sure others. I have been listening to Aretha for almost 50 years but this album is headed for the bottom of the pile. Great selection of songs, poorly executed.

- BASIC

basic af and her photoshopped self on her cover, she’s a fat mess, and a flop - needs to stop! and retire go away Aretha you are irrelevant. Mariah and ariana say hello

- GODDESS OF EVERYTHING!!!

This woman has given us MASTERPIECE after AFTERPIECE!!! This album is EVERYTHING!!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍

- She's the queen, but deserves better

Aretha is the unchallenged queen of soul. However, the production values on this album fail to do her justice. Sadly, the arrangements are cheesy, and there's distortion that should have been smoothed out in post.

- Bad Karaoke

I wanted to like this album, but there's nothing unique about the covers. Instead of the songs being made uniquely Aretha, they sound like karaoke instrumentals and the main vocals are thin, over-produced, remnants of a once powerful force. If this was an album released early in her career, it would have been the last time we heard of Aretha. If you're going to release a cover, album or single, it has to be able to stand on its own. Like Tina Turner's Proud Mary, Help, Baby I'm A Star, or Heard It Through The Grapevine. Whether you like her version or not, each was uniquely her interpretation. She put her own spin and style on them. This album sounds like Aretha played it safe. It is sad to hear. Only the most ardent fans will truly love this album.

- I Respect This for What it All

I didn't know how I felt about this when it came out - but I respect the style Aretha used for Rolling in the Deep. To be able to sing so well after all this time is a great compliment to her. She made the song an Aretha song.

- Horrible production

This had the potential to be something great and maybe with a better production it could have been. The arrangements, background singers sound like Karaoke. The queen of soul deserves better. What tries to be current here does not succeed and what tries to be soulful does not connect.

- Just 1 detail.

I will survive could have been better.

- S T U N N I N G ! ! !

I grew up listening to Ms. Franklin. My first album was 'Lady Soul' and I have been disappointed since. That was in the 70's. It's 2014 and although Aretha is 70+ which would signal retirement, this album shows how she continues gracefully as Queen of Soul and a force to reckoned with. Love or hate her you have admit that when she began as a youngster who knew she she would still be making music some 60 years later. Bravo! And I'm personally proud of you, Ms. Franklin. An honor to be alive while you continue making history! I would expect nothing less this lady of soul.

- Awesome Aretha! But so-so album.

I've been a fan of Aretha since before many of you were even here. I love Aretha, but people are right, the instrumentals and background vocals sound cheezy, artificial, and canned. It's sounds like Clive Davis gave her a karaoke CD to sing to. It sounds like the whole album was wrung through some kind of roller that flattened everything out like an assembly line production. Aretha's voice gets sanitized to the point where her uniqueness is erased and she sounds like Muzak, and it's not her fault! Did Clive Davis do anything more than suggest this album to Aretha? I can't believe he listened to it. It's Autotuned to death and way over-produced. Aretha's live performance on Letterman was amazing! The know-it-all youngsters who worked on this don't know when to put their toys down and let an artist perform. I know a lot of the young singers they work with need all the help they can get, but Aretha is a 17 (Seventeen!) time Grammy winner. Who else can touch that? After being in this business for more than 50 years, she knows how to sing. Yes, like all of us, age is beginning to tell on her voice, but she's still got it. If you're a fan, buy the album. Just realize that the production crew got a hold of this one and didn't know when to let go.

- Sound

Great sound from the Queen!!

- Not her best but not as bad as people are saying.

I like most tracks on this cd but the background voices are terrible and the mixture of synthetic and real instruments is awful. Her singing... She's in her 70's and you can hear it compared to her older classics but, it isn't bad. I saw her in concert this summer and she still sounds great, this album really doesn't do her justice. Auto tune needs to die. That can be the reason for a lot of it.

- sings the great diva classicas

Aretha franklin queen of the domane

- Hit and miss

The hits are home runs like the divinely jazzy Andre 3000 produced "Nothing Compares to You" with Keisha Jackson, Debra Killings, and Joi Gilliam singing background which is my favorite. I also liked "I Will Survive". The biggest miss and there were a few..."I'm Every Woman" which does NOT favorably compare to Chaka Khan nor Whitney Houston's versions. Overall Aretha is a nation treasure and this project will fit nicely in her stellar 40+ year repertoire.

- The song choices

I was hoping that Clive and Aretha would have choosen other female artist songs to cover. Most of the selcetion is ok but some I would have rather not heard Aretha cover. For example there are a few songs on this album that Aretha has already covered some years ago not to long after they were released. I am also surprised Aretha didn't cover I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston. She has sung it so many times since Whitney passed it just seemed like it would make since for her to do so on this album. As far as the auto tune, to me Aretha is just keeping up with the times.

- Sing it Girl

Rolling in the deep - awesome. I love it. Her creative sing on each track works. She’s powerful, Long live the Queen.

- Great Album!

Skip tracks 1 & 5. The rest are great especially the mash ups!

- OK Miss Aretha

My initial reaction was WTH..who came up with this concept. You know what it reminds me of - when people like Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme did Beatles songs back in the 70s...sounds like a novel idea that went horribly wrong. If ever there was a time I was advocate ones need to stay in their lane, it is today. Now, the vocal quality (in comparison to her earlier output) has diminshed - but show me someone from her era that is still active vocally that can belt it out - ok, scratch Streisand...and Mathis...and probably Diamond...*sigh*, hmm, this list is getting short :/ The culprit - Clive Davis. I think it's great that she's still active, however, I think it would've been better suited that she did songs that are more suited to her singing ability, very deep - Michael Franks style writing. I think they should've gone in the direction of "Lady in Satin" vs "...Sings the Beatles". Get people like Alicia Keys to write her something more profound. Get her a vocal coach that can tame the notes and a producer that will rein her in when she's going too far. Some songs don't require singing from the rails on the balcony to the corner of the basement and back...now I know that's almost impossible for Aretha to do, but if you give her material where being bombastic is the absolute wrong way to handle the song, I promise you she would shine. So this gets 3 stars for effort. I'm glad she's back on a major label, but I think that the next release in 2016 should be something more subdued, but with a chic vibe - more late nite lounge, with tamer vocals. And it's not like she can't do it - just need someone to sit her down and level with her...

- HUH !

" Constipaption relief" music

- Aretha is a master class to new singers

With this work Aretha just establish once again that she is the Queen of Soul. Her voice still amazing and her version of these songs is a statement there will only be one Aretha Franklin. All these Divas should feel more than honored that the Queen has taken the time to make these songs shine in her voice. This is my first Aretha CD and I am loving it.

- Aretha

If I knew where I could purchase this album I would. Love you Queen of Soul!

- Nope!

Very disappointed. Aretha is the queen of soul, but this collection doesn't have much soul. She over-sings and does her octave-jumping riffs where they're not needed and at some points "screams" the songs... She has nothing to prove, but this collection proved to be a dud for me. Good thing it wasn't expensive.

- Still there.

The vocal empathy and interpretive brilliance are still there.

- All hail the Queen of soul, long live the Queen of soul

This project is great Aretha really brings home on this collection of diva standards.as I read some of the other reviews of this project I have to beg to differ Aretha is not using auto tunes as stated by one of the reviewers this is all Aretha pure Aretha Franklin she has never needed any help this collection will make a nice stocking stuffer for Christmas,or even a just because gift I still listen to Aretha's amazing grace album.

- Yes. No. Maybe....

Ok, this was great, obviously, it’s Aretha people. But it’s kind of hard to listen to, as it’s more auto-tuned then some of her previous works, and she’s obviously starting to decline health wise

- Why?

Sorry and with all due respect to Queen Ree but this is horrible. She would release this but not her last 4 albums for Atlantic from the late 70’s? Smh...

- Have Several Seats

Aretha Hunnie sit the hell down and just let the new generation of singers take off were you paved the way .... This could hav celebrities singin your song

- No.

I feel like this alb should've never came out. Like ew she messed up all the classics. Like especially Barbra's "People" and Adele's "Rolling The Deep". Like your voice isn't the same. Stop Aretha. Just stop.

- I enjoyed it.

Came out of nowhere. Nice concept.

- No... Your music is in the past. Leave it there...

Awful..

- Glee

On her Version of "I will survive" she does a mash-up of i will survive and Survivor. Which the television show glee did it first so in all actuality it's not her version it's Glees version just saying..... Don't get me wrong it's a good song and I do have both versions!!

- Aretha Unbound and wonderful

The Queen of Soul retains her title in this album. I love it.The diva put a spin on the music that I had not anticipated. Her voice retained its youthful bounce. This is real jazzy soul so don't expect rapping. Others are free to capture her music in a future album. I would always love the Survivor song and she did make it all new again.

- The album that should not have been...

This is garbage. Aretha is one of the greatest female vocalists of all time and this is crap. The producer should never work again, he murdered these tracks with below sub-par production. Everything is wrong. The fact that there's no real instruments on the majority of the album (seriously, the queen of soul singing to a $49 drum machine track is insulting to everyone) and the vocals are overdone from performance to production... I can't even think about it anymore, it's so depressingly disappointing...

- A for effort, D for execution

Aretha still has it, but this record does her no favors in showing it off. Not the vocal mix, not the choice of songs, not the arrangements - both Rolling In The Deep and Nothing Compares 2 U are arranged in ways that have nothing to do with the songs or themes themselves, and seem to be arranged only to let Auntie Re caterwaul over the beats.

- On THE DIVA singing the Divas.....

Really?! Didn't I tell you, somewhere before that "Once 'Re does a song over, it can't be done again!". Only exception is her doing "Reach Out & touch" - No, Diana OWNS that one and Etta - "At Last"... now that I've heard the entire albulm ( I know I'm still calling it that) As MANY songs as I've heard her re-do. Either she picked the wrong ones or THESE weren't meant to be redone, idk. But I've heard better from the Queen of Soul. Only "People" and "No One" stand out for me. the rest she could've left alone. It's ok though, She's the Queen - so she's due one or two mediocre outings... A star for each GOOD one (just heard "Teach Me..")...Well, posthumously, she did ARETHA, it may not have been the songs WE would have picked but SHE did & that's just fine - We've lost a National & NATURAL TREASURE! - I LOVE YOU ARETHA!

- For drunken parties only

Let's all dress up like Aretha for Halloween, get majorly drunk and sing along with these songs.

- Awesome

I think she sounds wonderful, and she does bring her own flavor to the songs.

- knew it

If only she could still sound like she did in the 60's on this would SLAYED

- XD

She sounds like Herbert the pervert from family guy XD

- The Engineering...

The engineering left much to be desired. It just didn't fit well with the voice. Even a little reverb on her voice to give it a "Hall effect" would have made a tremendous effect. Otherwise, a solid album with solid vocals.

- Not Good

No one could touch Aretha in her prime - no one (the only singer that probably could do it is chaka Khan). Aretha is still trying to sing the same way she did back in the late 60s early 70s - but unfortunately the vocal power is not there anymore (it's simply called age baby). This could have been a great album if the producer really picked the songs that complemented the voice Aretha has now. She still has that amazing vocal phrasing and this is what she should rely on now - not trying to hit all the high notes that she obviously can't hit anymore. Go back - pick some more material that matches your voice and producers that understand the strengths and weaknesses of the voice you have now.

- Oh No Aretha….

You allowed someone to convince you to leap off your throne into the fray. Unnecessary venture.

- Remix please

I know there are remixes of Rolling In The Deep available because they are playing it in dance clubs. Please please make commercially available. Thanks

- This is Classic Aretha!

First off, Aretha was 72 years old when she recorded these hits back in 2014 made famous by other divas! She had a career spanning 50+ years! She won 18 Grammy awards and was nominated 44 times (Michael Jackson won 13 Grammys and Prince won 7, so that puts things in perspective). I'm not going to sit here and write a nasty review of someone who has been singing longer than my 44 years on this earth. If I want to hear Adele sing "Rolling in the Deep" or Alicia Keys sing "No One," then I have those recordings in my library. This is Aretha! Rest in Peace Queen of Soul.

- ❤️

❤️

- Love

All I can say is yes!!!

- Not All The Aretha It Could Be

Yes I noticed the compressed vocals and they degrade the soul in Queen AF's voice they bring her down to a level of Pop from gospel and Soul sounds the sound team didn't do a good job of Queens vocals

- Falls short of mediocre

You know something's off even by the album cover displaying a 72 year old Aretha with 36 year old skin. The music production sounds more like karaoke backing tracks more than arrangements tailored to compliment Aretha's mature voice but nothing could really hide how cigarette-knackered it's become. The distinct vocal styling is there but none of the power behind it. It's an album for the sake of an album rather than any noteworthy offering. Aretha seems to have lost her judgement here that kept her relevant through decades of changing musical tastes. It's quite sad really but at least she didn't cover 'Have I Stayed Too Long At The Fair'.

- Aretha

This record is incredibly enjoyable the only thing i absolutely hate are the background vocals on Midnight Train To Georgia just ruin a great vocal whoever dreamed this up is nuts

- Wow

Wow ce premier extrait (rolling in the deep) est incroyable!

- Fabuleuse idée cet album "Diva".

Une chanteuse à la voix inoubliable!

- Diva's

I saw Ms. Aretha on a breakfast show singing one of these hits! Beautiful, groovy and always a delight to see her...

- Not the Aretha we know

Not the Aretha we know and love. Badly produced! Whom ever produced this album has no idea- the sound is awful! It's like a really bad Karaoke mix. Aretha has done covers before which have been amazing, however this album seems like it has been rushed- bad synthetic instruments, bad choice of lyrical adaptation ...overall bad...and that's very disappointing as I love Aretha.

- it’s a no from me

i hate to say it, but these really are terrible covers. They all sound the same and are just boring

- Woeful

Shame on you Clive D for putting Ms Aretha through such torture. This is BAAAADDD from start to finish. Can't believe this has seen the light of day. Aretha luvvy retire with some dignity and leave the singing to the young ones who can MOAN !!!!

- NEILB

A true legend

- Oh no Aretha!

This woman will always have a place in my heart. But, Aretha your voice is awful these days if this album is anything to go by. Give it away, let us remember the good times.

- Wot u lot talkin about

Aretha Franklin, a legend, nuff said

- Disappointing

Not sure who advised Aretha to record an album of covers. Again. It's a bit of a retrograde step, taking her back to the sixties. I think the vocals are generally excellent. It's the electronic backing and production that don't work. At Last and Teach me Tonight are boring. The disco production on I will Survive is terrible and the backing track to Midnight Train is just awful! The album sounds like it was put together in a rush. Shame on the producers and whoever convinced Aretha to do this.

- What on Earth!

She obviously thought, I must sound as bad as most of the rubbish that’s out there at the moment, and then people will love me again. WRONG! This is BAD, I mean very BAD!!!!

- Horrid

Come on!!! This is Aretha !!! Pro-tools comp'd vocals. Amateur production. Come on. The queen of soul deserves better than this dreck !!!!!!! Sorry Aretha !!

- Wobbly vocal recording..??

It's great to hear Aretha show how it's done, with no disrespect to Adele. But the recording of the vocal for about the first 30 seconds is suspect - it "wobbles" for lack of a technical description. How can that happen, record company??

- Awful

The Queen needs some better advice, this is shrill and embarassing :(

- Oh Dear

I actually burst out laughing when I heard her cover of Rolling In The Deep. It sounded like it was recorded by an X-Factor reject.

- phoned in performance

I know its Aretha but this sounds like something she knocked off in an afternoon!! awful

- Enough is enough

Have appreciated Aretha Franklin's music for many years. I have collected her music and have every song she has ever released, with the exception of A Woman Falling Out Of Love. This album is not good. In fact it is awful to listen to. Sounding like she does today, Aretha Franklin would never get a recordng contract. I know she is trying to bring 'Aretha' to the covers, but it is her worst album ever, and one of the worst I have ever heard, by any artist. Keep singing like this and she will no longer be the Queen of Soul - maybe it is time for a coup!

- It Had To Be Done

I've loved Aretha for ever (her's was my first ever 45), but I was dissapointed by this at first. I love her Rolling in the Deep', now, I even like I will survive, but I wish she'd make an album with fresh songs (& leave Glady's & Diana alone Miss Franklin, they're unique & don't need to be covered). I'd say buy it, it's fun, funky and she's still the Queen of Soul.

- This is awful

Listen to People - a drunk karaoke singer springs to mind. Aretha, this is the worst you have done. Like Barbra's bland re-hash of old songs, why can't these divas keep fresh? Someone needs to tell them "no". Seems only Gladys Knight is keeping it going.

- What in gay hell is this?

I couldn't even make it through the previews.

- Pity

It's a pity such bad reviews as Aretha sounds great on the Kennedy centre honouring Carol King check it out on YouTube.

- 💵💵💷💷

Rolling in the deep was murdered. Every other song on this thing also suffered the same fate. Has the money finally ran out from when she could actually sing?
