Red Hot Chili Peppers - Greatest Hits

About Greatest Hits by Red Hot Chili Peppers Album

While their first compilation album What Hits!? encompasses material from their 1984 debut to 1989's Mother's Milk, this collection of songs takes off from that point, including material from their 1991 album Blood Sugar Sex Magik up through their 2002 album By the Way. It was during this period of their career that the band became a major commercial force in the music industry. Therefore this compilation includes the majority of hit singles released since their breakthrough cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" (also included on What Hits!?). "Higher Ground" from Mother's Milk, an album released by EMI Records, is included on this compilation through contractual negotiations: when the band switched from EMI to Warner Bros., both record companies agreed that one song from their contract was allowed to be included on the other company's compilation.] On What Hits!?, EMI chose to include the song "Under the Bridge" from Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Sixteen songs were recorded for this compilation, however only two were included. The two that made the cut were the singles "Fortune Faded" and "Save the Population", which was released as a non-radio CD single in Japan and Spain. "Fortune Faded" itself was a rerecording of a By The Way outtake that had been performed at some concerts in 2001. A music video was filmed and released for "Fortune Faded" but was left off the DVD version. In addition, alternate mixes of "Californication", "My Friends" and "Higher Ground" are included on this compilation, with no explanation as to why. However, the version of "My Friends" had previously leaked as an 'unmastered version' of the song (it appears mastered here) and the version of "Californication" had been utilized by some radio stations instead of the original track. "Higher Ground" appears in a different mix, which may have been Warner Bros.' attempt at remastering the track, or it may have been a rejected 12-inch mix. The names of the other fourteen songs are either unknown or unconfirmed except for "Runaway", which was included as a bonus track on the iTunes release of By the Way. There are rumors that the songs "Leverage of Space" and "Rolling Sly Stone", which were included in Live in Hyde Park, were recorded at this time. Also, the song "Mini-Epic (Kill For Your Country)", which was performed on the 2004 tour and was supposed to be on an anti-war album produced by Rick Rubin (a project that never came to fruition), is believed to have been recorded at this time. One other song name, which Flea stated backstage at a performance for his Silverlake Conservatory of Music, is "Desiree". "Hump de Bump" was also worked on for the first time during these sessions, as a jam named "40 Detectives". Allegedly, he recorded this on his phone and it was later recorded formally for Stadium Arcadium. "My Friends" is the only track included from the 1995 album, One Hot Minute. It is known that Frusciante and the rest of the band are not fans of Dave Navarro's time with the band, and this is likely to be the reason why other hits from the period, such as "Warped", "Coffee Shop" and "Aeroplane", are not included. Despite the popularity of the song "Love Rollercoaster", it could not be included because it was recorded on Geffen Records rather than Warner Bros. However, the music video for "Aeroplane" is featured on the DVD version of the compilation. A possible reason for this is that bassist Flea's daughter appears in the video. Also absent was the top ten hit "Around the World" from 1999's Californication although the DVD contained the music video. Of their eight U.S. number one singles on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart up to that point, only one of them, "Can't Stop", from their 2002 album By the Way, was excluded, though again the music video was featured on the DVD. To date, worldwide sales show that Greatest Hits has outsold five of the band's ten studio albums including Mother's Milk and I'm With You, making it the band's fifth-highest-selling release. In 2011, Smith discussed the recording sessions for Greatest Hits, saying they recorded sixteen songs and wanted to release a new album of that material after a brief tour; however, by that time John was against doing that because the style he was playing had changed and evolved as had his musical influences. Smith said there is an entire Red Hot Chili Peppers album out there that nobody will likely ever hear.

- By the way

I tried to say I’d be there

- chili peppers have no spice

People think RHCP is good for some reason and I just don’t get it. They aren’t versatile, unique, or original. They play funk metal. A ton of other bands play funk metal. They are no different. Slap bass, funky drums, all complimented by a guitar and bad vocals apparently make the world go round. Go listen to Faith No More. Patton sings Kiedis’ songs better than he does

- cmaaan

its great just (hey oh) or snow should be there

- Awesome!

one of the greatest bands ever!

- The best

Love RHCP! Amazing greatest hits

- Missing...

...Dani California? If I don't love the Peppers so much I would have removed some stars. Still can't lose with this album

- Come back John!

I will always love them but jeez I miss John :(

- Under the bridge

- Missing songs

Great album, I have it on black vinyl, not the grey marbled one, but, Where's Can't stop, around the world, the zephyr song, and aeroplane? Great songs from their band and great songs that I listened to, But they're not on the album? I wish they released a Greatest Hits Vol. 2, If that comes out with the songs i mentioned, I'm getting the songs on digital and greatest hits vol. 2 on vinyl. I hope The second greatest hits compilation exists...

- Not a complete greatest hits.

If you want an introduction to one of the greatest bands of all time, this will have to suffice. It has most of their hits. It can't have Dani California or Snow (Hey Oh) because those songs didn't exist when this album was released. But "Around the World" and "Can't Stop" did exist: there's no excuse for excluding those songs. How did "Universally Speaking," and "Road Trippin'," two non-hits make it on here instead? If you want all the hits, get this and then download the other songs I mentioned.

- yes

a smoking grand one here!

- One of best bands ever

Love then

- Ugh I hate this band (Personal Reasons too)

The only good songs they made where under the bridge and californiacation

- Great value.

The 3 non-album tracks alone is worth the purchase price. Some of their studio albums are so good front to back that this spliced up collection of hit singles pales in comparison. For those complaining about missing favorites, buy the albums and not just settle for their ā€œgreatest hitsā€. Try... Blood Sugar Sex Magik Californication By The Way Stadium Arcadium These classics are amongst the greatest alternative rock albums of all time and still tops anything released in the past 10-20 years.

- Good stuff

Great collection of hits, except there’s no Can’t Stop

- Under the bridge šŸ˜

It's a timeless song that will never grow old šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

- Goo greatest hits

But missing a few good songs like Dani California can’t stop snow Wet sand zephyr song but overall great album with great songs listen to it all the time

- Chilli Peppers greatest hits

Feel the power of the Chilli Pepppers!

- Billing

Charged me tax for the purchase, but its a great song.

- Good but could've had more

Could've had more songs like some of my favorites righteous and the wicked and my lovely man

- No good

Was not happy with purchase

- Legends šŸ¤˜šŸ»

The chili peppers are the best band of all time. They need to do another greatest hits album in a year or 2

- Omg is great

I love this sonf

- Almost Perfect

If they added ā€œCan’t Stopā€ and ā€œAround the Worldā€ this would’ve been a perfect RHCP compilation.

- There could be so many more songs on this

I mean fortune faded and soul to squeeze need I say more .

- One Of the Worst Overrated Bands Of all Time

Give it away Give it away Give it away Now How deep is that ? Yeah Great Musical Ideas Guys You sing About Herion and everybody Thinks Yor deep But Your Not Your Wingy Libearal Eviromentalsts with no depth what so ever This band Represents everything wrong with 90's music Go Listen to nirvana Or Pearl Jam This Band are Hacks

- Mann

Nnnnnnnn

- Under the Bridge

The first time I ever listened to this song I thought nothing of it just another good piece of music from a band that I loved to listen to. After running through a rough patch in life for a couple of months I found I literally did end up under a bridge in my darkest moment. from then on it went up. I got the help I needed and everything got better. After all that my love for music exploded especially after listening and seeing how closely I related to a lot of the lyrics in Under the Bridge. It really showed me a new side of music that I’ve been missing my entire life. It’s amazing how music can show or make you feel it’s really the other side of a coin you’ve been carrying your whole life.

- The negative people are crazy

People that do not like this do not realize how versatile this band is and was. Not the worlds best but really really good.

- Great Album

As a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan, I think that it's really convenient of Apple to combine all these songs into one album! Still enjoying my purchase!

- Love it bro yahhhhs

Bro

- My favorite song ever is Californiacation

You half to listen too Californiacation

- Does Its Job, Mostly

A band with a catalog like RHCP will always struggle to find an affordable collection of hits that completely satisfies everyone. This does a pretty good job. I have a few gripes, but then again, greatest hits collections by any band are always subject to that criticism; everyone has a different opinion on which songs from a band's history are the "greatest."

- One of the best bands of the 90s

One of my all-time favorite bands, they were rocking it then and they still are currently.

- Awesome

You need to have dis album

- Great band

This 3 star review is based off the song selection. Good songs but not my favorite. I was a huge fan of one hot minute which I understand was not a favorite of many. I think "one big mob, one hot minute" should be included but that's just me.

- Missing song

I purchased this entire album but one song, Road trippin’, did not download. I can’t play it! How can I download again only that song??

- W rizzzzzzzz

Bros got w jawline!! YESSSsss

- A little too much rock

There is a lot of rock but it says alternative dissapointed

- Missing the connection

lol loved it

- Perfection šŸ˜»šŸ’˜

I love everything from this album...

- Great but missing a song

I love RHCP and this album, but where is can't stop. That is my favorite RHCP song, and it's weird considering that was a huge song for them. Maybe it's just my bias to the song and the whole By The Way album

- Weaklings and egomaniacs

When Hillel Slovak was in the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the band did interesting things that showcased deep potential. When he died they soldiered on, but with diminishing returns each album. Blood Sugar Sex Magik was the last album they made that could be considered in any way good or listenable, because afterwards it was a descent into tame, good-times-all-the-time-except-when-I’m-singing-about-California hippie garbage that makes me surprised the Peppers aren’t considered adult contemporary or adult alternative. Anthony Kiedis is a horrible and I mean HORRIBLE singer whose pathetic singing makes me want to gouge out my ears and never hear anything ever again, in addition to him being a total creep and pervert who should be in prison for underage indiscretion. He also started the beef between him and Mike Patton and is the clear loser in that feud so he’s also an egomaniac. John Fruscitane is a highly overrated guitarist who doesn’t really do that impressive of guitar work, Flea is a good bassist wasted on mediocre pop rock tunes, and Chad Smith needs to find another band in order for his skills to not wither under the mediocrity he’s surrounded by. The Peppers are not without their talents, but it’s what makes them even more infuriating and annoying. If they fired Kiedis they’d probably be a great band, but his slimy singing and disgusting hippie lyrics are unfortunately what catapulted them to the top of the charts. Most people think because of their prevalence and ubiquity that Flea is the best bass player around, but fail to realize that honor belongs to Les Claypool of Primus and Tony Levin. Kiedis in no way deserves praise as a songwriter or musician or singer in any form or in any universe. That honor belongs to his enemy Mike Patton, who’s got a six octave range, can sing in any style of music and hasn’t molested 14 year old girls. Dude writes pretty far-out songs too, especially in Mr Bungle. Flea as a person wasn’t much better than Kiedis but he did admit to feeling guilty about his bad behavior whereas Kiedis just admitted his to justify part of his ā€œfree loveā€ philosophy which is pretty awful. Red Hot Chili Peppers are THE most overrated band in rock n roll history, whose legacy mainly rests on ONE album (Blood Sugar Sex Magik). You’d be better off listening to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, or better yet Primus, Faith No More, Mr Bungle, Pantera, Alice In Chains, and Stone Temple Pilots. And a million other artists too…

- amazing song choice

can't think of any better songs to put on a cd

- A Good Album

Includes most of Red Hot Chili Peppers hits. But they should include Snow (hey oh!),Dani California ,and Can't Stop. But it's still great music

Greatest Hits Wiki

A greatest hits album or best-of album is a type of compilation album that collects popular and commercially successful songs by a particular artist or band. While greatest hits albums are typically supported by the artist, they can also be created by record companies without express approval from the original artist as a means to generate sales. They are typically regarded as a good starting point for new fans of an artist, but are sometimes criticized by longtime fans as not inclusive enough or necessary at all. It is also common for greatest hits albums to include new recordings, remixes or unreleased alternate takes of the hit songs, plus other new material as bonus tracks to increase appeal for longtime fans (who might otherwise already own the recordings included). At times, a greatest hits compilation marks the first album appearance of a successful single that was never attached to a previous studio album. Greatest hits albums usually are released after an artist or band's contract with a major label is completed, they've been dropped or died, with next releases following on new labels.
