- Loss and Consternation Expressed Perfectly

The most heart wrenching and devastatingly beautiful album I've ever listened to. I have been an avid Sufjan fan since Michigan and have enjoyed all of his works but this, this is on another level. It is so deeply personal yet I'm able to apply every song to my own circumstances of loss (the death of my father) and longing and feel both sympathy and empathy. It resonates to my very core and brings out deep emotions that I often lock away - the very essence of catharsis.…

- Best yet

I have always loved a of sufjan's albums, but this is my new favorite. It's so peaceful and the lyrics are hauntingly beautiful. Couldnt have asked for a better album.

- Iconic

His best album yet. Every single song is full of emotion and musicality.

- Masterpiece

A heartbreaking Masterpiece with a profound message.

- An honest, moving musical portrait of life and loss.

This album is one of the most beautiful, moving, and honest albums I've ever heard in my life. I have always been a huge fan of Sufjan and this album will replace Illinois as my favorite album of his.

- Feathery & Beautiful

:)

- Amazing

One of the best albums in recent memory. Sits right next to Kamasi Washington’s “The Epic” as the best of 2015, so far.

- Chillingly honest

Without question, Sufjan Stevens best album. Lyrically heartbreaking. Musically beautiful and pure.

- Heartbreaking and Beautiful

This is one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking Albums I've ever listen to.. Is emotional and inspirational.. John my beloved brought me to tears..

- Gorgeous, gentle, and painfully honest

Sufjan returns to his roots, stripping all layers of synth and leaving himself with strings and a soft whisper, with which he uses grieve his mother's death and ponder his insecurities surrounding their relationship in a cohesive album.

- Best Album Ever?

An unbelievably beautiful work of art, Carrie and Lowell may very well be the greatest album ever made. Almost every song is a masterpiece and together they form an album beyond compare.

- Absolutely beautiful.

Minimalist, mournful, and majestic, but honestly, what else could you expect from Sufjan?

- Perfect

Album. Lyrically, musically and emotionally. Maltempi

- Best album of 2015 thus far

What else needs to be said? Sufjan Stevens has done it again. Carrie and Lowell cuts deep into the soul in a way only Stevens can accomplish.

- New to his music, but this is good

I'm not big into his music, but John My Beloved hits me right in the feels, since I first heard it in a Laurens x Hamilton animatic and it broke my little heart. I can't speak for the other songs, but that one is amazing.

- I love the atmosphere.

Something sad with something true, a contemporary masterpiece.

- i love this

this album makes me feel so many things, and seriously it’s one of my favorite albums

- Cathedral Experience

Having explored the variety of musical/lyrical content Sufjan Stevens has presented over the years, this collection has become the standard on how I will measure what a masterpiece can be. (Along w/ George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass).

- Exceptionally Innocent & Heartfelt

Stevens' voice so divinely expresses his emotional connection to his words & his music. How magical it is when you hear an artist who can simply make raw power flow from their lips to your ears & into your heart.

- How the heart aches ...

After my mom died unexpectedly two years ago, I was shock at my inability to describe the fleeting feelings of despair, the heartache that was always just below the surface, just how much I mssed her.|| Then I heard Fourth of July. Can't say how many times I played it in a row. The pain finally shook loose. I cried every time. Just like right now. God bless you Sufjan for having the courage to crack open your heart and share the pain.

- Thanks NPR!

Sufjan is an amazing artist! I really resonate with his lyrics. Keep up the good work Sufjan!

- The Perfect Album

The title of my review says it all.

- Prepare Your Tearducts

This isn't an album. This is an existential, emotional, and tragic experience put to rhythm and sound. This isn't something you listen to strictly because it sounds pretty, but because it reaches down into the deepest recesses of your soul, heart, and mind and makes you reflect on all of the tragedies you have encountered in your life. Never before has there been such an experience that was so easily able to thrust me into spiraling emotional turmoil. The rhetoric within this album is unparalleled within all modern music and is truly a work of both art and poetry. Sufjan Stevens brings to the planet Earth his experience and the distraught feeling within him. Through songs like "John My Beloved," "Carrie and Lowell," "The Fourth of July," and "Blue Bucket of Gold" you become transported to a blue world in which the only light is the spotlight on a single blue man sitting in the dark strumming at a guitar, playing the piano, and singing. I don't think anything within years to come can ever even begin to rival the masterpiece that is Carrie and Lowell. It receives 5 out of 5 stars, my tears, and my undying sense of grief.

- Best and most vulnerable album

While I listen to and love all of his works, I found this album to hit the heart and memories of loss and hope. Saw this concert live and was blown away at his range and style.

- Beautiful...💅🏼

This album is perfect in every way.

- Amazing.

I first heard this album live when he was in Milwaukee last October. I bought the album on cassette and I was completely taken aback how amazingly well done this album is. Beautiful. No song is better than the other - they are all amazing. I highly recommend it if you enjoy Sufjan Stevens earlier works.

- Great Album

I’ve been hoping he would come out with an album that was more just him and his guitar. It is a great listen. The first 2 tracks are my favorite. It is definitely a sad album but he occasionally shows hope about his mom’s death through his Faith in Jesus Christ.

- Perfect album

I'm so glad this album was made. Sufjan's gifts as a storyteller and poet are unparalleled.

- Sufjan's Best Album (and that's saying a lot)

I could write a thousand words about this album. You know that Pitchfork "People's List" which lists the top 200 albums 1996-2011 according to their readers? They have OK Computer as number 1, and Sufjan Steven's own "Illinois" is number 10. Well if they updated it so that it goes from 1996-2015, I'm positive this would make the top 10. I'd be pretty surprised if a better album came out this year (and that's saying a lot considering Tame Impala and Radiohead are releasing albums in 2015). Sufjan takes his song-writing skills from "Illinois" and merges it with the style/prduction of "Seven Swans" and the result is breathtaking. Every song is great, no fillers. But here's my top 5: 1) John My Beloved, 2) The Only Thing, 3) Should Have Known Better, 4) No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross, and 5) Eugene. Most people won't understand the greatness of John My Beloved because it's slow, but it's GREAT. Sufjan Stevens is now officially my favorie solo artist and finds himself in my golden top 5 bands along with Radiohead, The Flaming Lips, My Morning Jacket, and oh man there's so many tied for 5th. In fact, I might as well just shoot him into the number 2 spot. 1) Radiohead 2) Sufjan Stevens, enough said.

- Oh God

If, like Sufjan, you've recently lost your Mom and want to gut yourself along with him, this is the album for you. Excoriating. And, incidentally, his best.

- Beautiful

Most beautiful acoustics you'll ever hear. He's phenomenal with how he blends music. Simply amazing

- Haunting

Superb on the first listen, and exponentially better with repeated listenings. One of my all-time favorite albums. If you’re an Elliot Smith fan, you’re looking in the right place.

- Incredible in every way.

What a beautiful record from start to finish. Soft, calming and full of depth. A delicately orchestrated masterpiece and I can guarantee I'll be listening to this record until the rest of forever.

- Beautiful Beyond Words

If I were asked to choose only one album that I could listen to for the rest of my life, it would be this one. Sufjan Stevens is one of my favorite artists, and this album is the most honest exploration of - and portrayal of - the struggles and the beauty of LIFE that I have ever heard. The album predominantly focuses on the death of Sufjan's mother, whom he had a difficult relationship with, and how Sufjan struggled to deal with her death. The resulting songs are in many cases heartbreaking, yet eventually hopeful as well. Needless to say, if this album doesn't make you FEEL, or reflect on life & love & all the things, then I'm not sure what will. A gorgeous album, from start to finish.

- Literally The Best Purchase I Ever Made

If I were to describe my feelings to anyone, I’d just give them this album instead. It’s honestly so beautiful and I’m ashamed to have just recently discovered Sufjan - thanks to the Call Me By Your Name soundtrack. Where has he been all my life? Gah! Consider me a fan forever. *goes on to buy all his other albums* ❤️💕💕💕💕

- you will cry.

the best way I can describe my experience with this album is: wanting to cry but also not wanting to miss a single lyric.

- Okay so

I cried when I heard the forth of July because lately I’ve been thinking of suicide but then my gf who was born on the fourth of july then I heard this song a few months ago from today(may 10th 2022) I just cried in my closet for an hour. But I’ve been better and then I’m going to therapy soon so hope y’all have better days.

- Parental loss redeemed

To be honest, I have always thought Sufjan was a bit over the top, a little too produced for my taste. This album changed everything for me. I lost my father two years ago to death, but I lost him years before to addiction. Never have I had heard an album or read words in a book that so accurately reflected the ache of a child who has been abandoned. “I just wanted to be near you.” Subtle and piercing. I have gifted this album to my siblings as a tool to grieve and to feel identified. I have used it the same way. Thank you for making this album, Sufjan. It really is a gift.

- Brilliant

Seeing this album performed live in dc gave it a whole new dimension for me - please come back to DC more! A deeply personal, raw, and honest set of songs dealing with death and sorrow. He spoke everything I've felt.

- Sufjan is a genius

If you ever were wondering what an angel sounds like, listen to Sufjan Stevens. His songs are so beautiful but so melancholic. It will definitely make you feel something.

- Sufjams Stevens Phenomenal!

As always, a great work of art by Sufjan Stevens. There's not much to say except that he touches on emotions and experiences that reflect not only in his writing but in his overall musical composition. All I have to say is: see him live. I had the fortune of seeing him in Albany and he put on a spectacular show! You really connect with him through this album.

- Not As Good

As seeing him live! #nuthinbeatsfrontrowseats

- Pushed and pulled me.

I fell into this album after my father passed away. Never have I listened to anything so heart breaking and beautiful that so closely aligned with my own path. Sufjan is a one of a kind song writer. This will go down as one of the most important albums of my life. I thank him for this extraordinary creation.

- The Best

I am so glad Sufjan came out with a new album and one that is as beautiful as this. He is an incredibly talented artist and the music he creates is a soundtrack to live by (while driving, cleaning house, ambient music when guests are visiting.) There is no one out there that is quite as good or with music as distinctive as his.

- Pure

A beautiful, honest journey through life and death. The Carrie and Lowell tour was even better than the album. I came back to this album after seeing Sufjan tonight at the Hollywood Bowl. This album is the the current high water mark of his discography, IMHO. Listen for yourself!

- Perfection

Beautifully heartbreaking.

- One of the best albums ever made

This album has impacted me more than anything has before

- Thanks, Sufjan Stevens.

Carrie & Lowell is an amazing album; the songs are difficult to listen to as they reveal a very personal history, one that many would repress or deny. Only Sufjan has the courage to write of this story, welcoming the listener into his personal mythology with acoustic guitar, piano, limited studio production and no drums. This is a beautiful album. Thanks, Sufjan Stevens.

- Absolutely breathtaking

This album has never affected me like anything else. Growing up in a similar situation, it was easy to understand Sufjans feelings. But never would I have thought that I would hear my own feelings in his lyrics. Absolutely beautiful album.

- Wow, just Wow

That is all.

- Sufjan at his best

For those who loved 'come feel the Illinois', and like me didn't quite know what to make of 'Adz', this is Sufjan back doing what he does best, making music like no one else. A heart felt collection of beautiful tunes, his amazing voice, and a rawness not easily found in modern artists. Truly beautiful.

- Faulty iTunes download

Really disappointed - this file is not working correctly on iTunes - buy the physical copy instead. Very disappointed as the album is brilliant n I always use iTunes. Unfortunately they do not fix problematic downloads - the recent Kele album has the same problems of not playing immediately/correctly. again, i had to buy an additional physical copy to enjoy it without being continually frustrated. Hope this 'trend' does not continue or else I will no longer use iTunes

- Comes with a sword

Astonishingly eloquent

- Masterpiece

Sufjan Stevens is the exception to today's music. He truly defines the word alternative by opening his life, thought and struggle through art. Sounds a little cliche but damn this emotional album may be the better of the lot.

- Practically Perfection

I can’t put it into words. There is not a song in there I would skip over, and put together they form an album greater than the sum of its parts, with the artistic direction, instrumentals and songwriting of Sufjan.

- With every single album listen...

...it seeps it self into everything you are. I didn't really know what to think my first listen. Probably because I wasn't focused enough. And Stevens stunningly amazing ways of writing lyrics for his songs can be difficult to get your head around. But push through listen again and again and even now for me it's about my twelfth listen through and I'm feeling new emotions and 'wow' moments in different songs and it's an incredible feeling. This album.... Wow. Wow, wow, wow. Sufjan, thank you for the honesty and pouring out your heart. It's already got universal acclaim. It deserves even more.

- Like warm breath on cold glass

Sufjan will transport you into his wintery, macabre yet undeniably beautiful world with song after song, masterpiece after masterpiece

- His best work

I'm not a huge fan of Sufjan Stevens usually - I loved a few songs on Illinois but find much of his music to be little more than pretentious walls of noise - a shameful waste of obvious talent. This album is quiter, simpler, and contains much beauty and sadness. Fourth of July is the loveliest piece of music I've heard in a long time. I'd buy it just for that - although many of the other songs are great too.

- Beyond words

Grief, put in words.

- Wow.

How can just a single guitar/banjo say more than a thousand books and each song mean more than an eternity of generic pop songs. It's so sad yet so damn beautiful. A few songs even bring me to tears. Pure art, some of the best music around. Whoever rated one star is a demon put here to destroy the earth that has no emotion and taste for music. All of me wants all of you.
