Van Halen - Diver Down

About Diver Down by Van Halen Album

Diver Down is the fifth album by American hard rock band Van Halen, released in 1982. According to Van Halen's official website, it spent 65 weeks on the US album charts and had, by 1998, sold 4 million copies in the United States. The album cover displays the "diver down" flag used in many US jurisdictions to indicate a diver is currently submerged in the area, and caution is advised to nearby boats. Asked about the cover in a 1982 interview with Sylvie Simmons (Sounds, June 23, 1982), David Lee Roth said it was meant to imply that "there was something going on that's not apparent to your eyes. You put up the red flag with the white slash. Well, a lot of people approach Van Halen as sort of the abyss. It means, it's not immediately apparent to your eyes what is going on underneath the surface." The music video for "(Oh) Pretty Woman" was one of the first banned by MTV although VH1 Classic has consistently aired it in recent years. In 1982, Dave explained the ban as the result of complaints that it made fun of "an almost theological figure" the Samurai warrior (Mike Anthony in the video) and also because two midgets appeared to molest a woman (actually a man in drag). The video, directed by Roth, was, he said: "rather like a surrealistic art project ... where they paint the picture and come back three days later and try to figure out what they meant." The track "Intruder" on the album, which precedes "(Oh) Pretty Woman", was written specifically in order that there would be enough music to cover the length of the film that was edited down for the "(Oh) Pretty Woman" video. In his 1982 interview with Sylvie Simmons, Dave takes credit for "Intruder", stating: "I wrote that ... When we finished the movie (i.e., the video) it was about three minutes too long. So, I said, we won't cut any of it; we'll write soundtrack music for the beginning. So we went into the studio and I played the synthesizer and I wrote it. It took about an hour to put that together." (Sounds, June 23, 1982) Eddie and Alex Van Halen's father, Jan Van Halen, plays clarinet on "Big Bad Bill." Five of the twelve songs on the album are covers, the most popular being the Roy Orbison cover "Oh, Pretty Woman." At the time, the record company thought they had a greater chance of a hit record if it comprised songs that were already successful. In retrospect, it turned out to be one of the Van Halen's brothers' least favorite albums, with Eddie stating "I'd rather have a bomb with one of my own songs than a hit with someone else's". However, at the time whilst he admitted to the pressure the band was put under to record it, he was able to tell Guitar Player (Dec. 1982) that it "was fun": "When we came off the Fair Warning tour last year , we were going to take a break and spend a lot of time writing this and that. Dave came up with the idea of, 'Hey, why don't we start off the new year with just putting out a single?' He wanted to do 'Dancing in the Streets.' He gave me the original Martha Reeves & the Vandellas tape, and I listened to it and said, 'I can't get a handle on anything out of this song.' I couldn't figure out a riff, and you know the way I like to play: I always like to do a riff, as opposed to just hitting barre chords and strumming. So I said, 'Look, if you want to do a cover tune, why don't we do 'Pretty Woman'? It took one day. We went to Sunset Sound in L.A., recorded it, and it came out right after the first of the year. It started climbing the charts, so all of a sudden Warner Bros. is going, 'You got a hit single on your hands. We gotta have that record.' We said, 'Wait a minute, we just did that to keep us out there, so that people know we're still alive.' But they just kept pressuring, so we jumped right back in without any rest or time to recuperate from the tour, and started recording. We spent 12 days making the album ... it was a lot of fun." In addition to this, two of the original songs were around long before the album was made. "Hang 'Em High" can trace its roots back to the band's 1977 demos as "Last Night", which had the same music but different lyrics. "Cathedral" was also nothing new, being played in its current form throughout 1981 with earlier versions going back to 1980. Additionally, "Happy Trails" had been recorded for their 1977 demos as a joke.

- Made the Kinks look foolish

VH said "Hey can we borrow a few songs from you? We'll give em back unless we make better versions" and so they did

- Some great songs

While this may technically be the band's weakest effort with wild front man Diamond Dave at the helm, that doesn't mean there aren't some excellent tracks. The opener "Where Have All the Good Times Gone?" has such a genuine Van Halen sound to it that one would never guess it's a cover. Then again, this band always had a knack for making a song their own. Unfortunately that same truth doesn't quite work out for them on "Dancing in the Streets" and "Pretty Woman". I know the latter went on to be a concert staple, but I've never cared for it. While most of the covers are forgettable, the original tracks are top notch. "Hang 'Em High" is standard Van Halen fare served up with growling guitars and wild howls. "Secrets" has such a subdued and smooth sound that it makes you want more. "Little Guitars" is another departure from the metal sound gone right. It's definitely still a rocker, but completely different from anything else the band had done before. "The Full Bug" is a bluesy rocker fueled by Diamond Dave's nasty harmonica playing. Another gem in the bunch. "Big Bad Bill" is purely fun and a change of pace number reminiscent of Women and Children First's title track. "Happy Trails" is great closer, and again, a dose of fun. All in all, this is a good album. If "intruder" "pretty woman" and "dancing in the street" had been replaced by tracks with a little more substance and originality, this album would rank higher in the VH anthology. 3.5/5 is a fair rating.

- Half baked

A fun summer album but not a top shelf Van Halen album. Eddie as always shines throughout.

- Underrated album in my opion.

82', when I actually bought "records'. Strawberries and musicland at the mall. Think it took a bit to grow on me, but is one of my favorite VH. albums. To many songs to list. And by the way, i"m an a oringal diamond dave fan, but I also like van Hagar. If i had to pick one David Lee roth van Halen album I 'm least into, it would be woman and children first. Just never fully got into it, just the hits, oh well, some day.

- Half original, half cover

After the supporting tour of "Fair Warning", Van Halen considered taking a short break to rest and recover before returning to the studio. However, Warner Bros. wanted a single to be released to keep the momentum of the band alive. Since Van Halen had no new material written, they decided to create another cover, which became "(Oh) Pretty Woman". When it came time to make the music video, the song was too short, so the band wrote the instrumental "Intruder". After the video, the band decided to return to the studio and the record company gave the band a short time to complete it. It resulted in an album of half covers and half originals. It became the weakest album yet for the band with unnecessary interludes and some change in tone. There are still some great songs, such as "Little Guitars" and "Hang Em High". Van Halen does do justice on all the covers they did on the record, but for the next record, the band had to do some reinvention to keep themselves relevant and alive.

- Underrated album from VH

I myself would definitely rank this album in the top 5 albums in VH catalog. A fun, rocking album. I wish they would of put another original song written by VH instead of cover songs

- It's van halen of course it's awesome

Awesome album from the David lee roth album. I love happy trails. Best song ever. Little guitars big bad bill is a sweet William now (😂😂😂😂) secrets and hang em high are all the best. Their covers of Dancig in the streets oh pretty women and where have all the good times gone were very well done. Cathedral is the best solo on this album and I get a headache from intruder. I love van halen Even if I wasn't alive for David lee Roths era (other than today!)

- Amazing!!

The greatest rock band of all time

- VH DIVER DOWN

Great album and brings back many good times....

- Great record for cover record.

The label forced Van Halen to get back into the studio. So they recorded a couple of covers and some new stuff. And it’s still an amazing record. The pretty woman cover was a huge hit for a covers record this was a huge hit for Van Halen. Then 1984 came after this.

- Dive Deeper & You’ll Be Rewarded

The casual Van Halen listeners often dismiss this album with comments like “weakest of the DLR era” or “It’s mostly a covers album” blah, blah blah. Here’s the deal. EVERY VH album with Dave and Edward features musical goldmines that are abundantly creative, clever and timeless. Diver Down is NO exception. Let’s dive deeper... First, there’s the musical diversity. No band of their era (with the exception of Queen) had such an intense respect and knowledge of different musical genres that they could draw upon when the creative spark was ignited. “Big Bad Bill Is Sweet William Now” swings like a long lost big band jazz standard, Rumored to feature the Van Halen’s father Jan on clarinet. “The Full Bug” gives us a glimpse into what REALLY made the creative partnership between Dave and Edward work: a common passion for the blues. As Dweezil Zappa recently stated VH blues is “blues, but not like any blues you’ve EVER heard before.” Same with “Bug.” Keith Richard once commented that you’re listening to the REAL Mick Jagger when he blows the harp. Well, when Edward starts riffing the blue notes and Dave kicks in with his whisky drenched vocal musings there’s nothing more truthful or awe inspiring. It’s the heart of their partnership and a peak inside the soul of their genius. Then there’s “Dancing In The Streets.” A big part of VH’s popular appeal was how sweet they could sound...makes the girls dance and the guys chase after ‘em. The background vocals are a big factor in why this is so. “Dancing” is a prime example. And then there’s “Hang ‘Em High”...It’s a freight train of a song...the relentless groove and tempo, how perfectly impossible it is that Dave keeps up with Edward’s ferocious guitar with equally inventive vocal Interplay ranks among their greatest moments. Read that again. Listen to the song. You’ll get it. “Pretty Woman” is a popular cut and like all Dave era VH, the band manages to make it sound NOTHING like the original. It sounds like what it is: another VH classic. Edward Van Halen is sadly gone, but he will never be forgotten. Do your part. Rediscover his music and dive deeper. Share it with your friends and family. Listen to ALL of his tunes not just the hits and appreciate his genius. It’s a gift to all of us who love music. Dive deeper and you will be rewarded. Rock on...

- The Good Ol' Days...

This was back when album-oriented rock dominated the rock radio airwaves. This one is good from begging to end. Did you know Eddie & Alex's father plays clarinet on "Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now"? It's true.

- Two or three great songs, but this was too hastily assembled

I’m not a big fan of Van Halen making an album that’s half covers. Two of the covers are great and Intruder is my second-favorite instrumental, but there’s WAY too much filler.

- Least favorite album.

This is my least favorite album of the Diamond Dave era. There are a few good songs on here along with Eddies great guitar work. But overall it’s just mostly cover songs which I don’t like. But if your a Van Halen fan there are a few tracks off here that are worthy of downloading.

- Love this album

This is o r of the best Van Halen albums ever I love this album great job Van Halen for a great album

- Would have made two great EPs.

Certainly the weakest of the original VH albums, that perhaps would have been better as an EP and released without the covers, and yet, at the same time, a completely essential VH album that I've always had a soft spot for. Weird, right?

- The Greatest!

@ DogmessJohnny you’re a complete idiot. Go Review your head in the Microwave cuz you clueless!

- Quintessential Gen X

My first rock album. And still, in my mind, one of the greatest R&R albums ever.

- FUN

Fun album!

- Oh my goodness

So good

- Obviously

This is a pretty good album especially Big Bad Bill and Little Guitars

- Pretty woman's song

Not the version I wanted. Original version from this album has a nice guitar intro (which I THOUGHT I was getting) , the one I got had the guitar intro cut off. I HATE when iTunes does this. They substitute a different version of the song, usually from a recompiled "best of" album. I wish I could give this back.

- The Good Times Are Here

Some fans malign this album because of the amount of covers and instrumentals, but that does not make the album any less of a fun time. The covers are done very well and they inject hard rock life into some classics. “Big Bad Bill” is campy, but a neat change for the boys. The instrumentals show some imaginative guitar work not seen before. And although there are only four original full band songs, they are brilliant, especially “Secrets”, “Little Guitars”, and “Hang ‘Em High”. It’s Van Halen back in the Sun, after a two year absence.
