Van Halen - Van Halen

About Van Halen by Van Halen Album

Van Halen is the self-titled debut album by American hard rock band Van Halen, released in 1978. The album recorded in 1977 and released in February 1978. It has sold over ten million copies in the United States alone, one of the most successful debuts by a hard rock band. Along with 1984, it gives Van Halen two original (non-greatest hits) albums with Diamond status in sales. From a technical perspective, Eddie Van Halen's guitar solo, Eruption, was influential on many rock guitarists who found popularity in the 1980s."Eruption" was added to the album when producer, Ted Templeman heard Eddie warming up with the instrumental. Eddie told Ted that it was just a solo piece he played live. The album cover was shot at the Whisky a Go Go. In 2003, the album was ranked number 415 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. In 2006, a cover of You Really Got Me based on Van Halen's cover You Really Got Me appeared as a playable song in the music video game Guitar Hero II. Best debut album in rock history with the greatest musician of the 20th century.

- STUPID CRAZY COOL♥️

OH GOD IM RUNNING HIGHYA RUNNING WITH THE DEVIL!!!!!! Welcome to the 1970s!!!

- Heavy Metal 1978

The best Metal band the world has ever heard. The greatest guitar Player and the greatest front man any rock band has ever seen. Mix in a killer drummer and a bass player with some of the best back up vocals. Again, the greatest rock band in the world in my opinion. Mic drop...

- Sgt. Stadanko

Rest In Peace, Edward Van Halen.🤙

- omg

so emotional eddie van halen died today...

- I remember where I was when I heard Eruption

I was washing my friend's car when out of nowhere the local radio station played Eruption. I was a young musician but I thought that was a synthesizer! That's how outrageous Eddie's playing and tone were in 1978. I then saw them open up for Black Sabbath on the now legendary "they blew Sabbath off the stage" tour. And it's true. Van Halen on their first three or four tours were killin'. But that show, on Thanksgiving night in 1978 for the tour of this album was one of the most impactful rock shows of all time. It was probably like seeing The Beatles for the first time. They changed rock forever and were probably the last great classic rock band. Buy this album, Woman and Children First and 1984 and you'll be set. Actually Van Halen II and all the Roth era albums are great.

- 11/10 would listen again

when is dave gonna come around with his ice cream truck i wanna buy ice cream from him

- Best debut LP ever...

I think it would be hard to truly appreciate how otherworldly this record sounded in 1978, unless you were a young music fan hearing it for the first time in that year. I was a very young, aspiring guitarist when this came out. I was in love with the sounds of Blackmore, May, Hendrix, Schenker, Roth, Page, Iommi...all I can say is Van Halen's debut seemed to tear a hole in the sky. He clearly had not only his own sound and personality but a technique that, in the days before music videos, no one I knew could tap into. Eddie was fierce...he was also fiercely original and wonderfully musical. David Lee Roth's charismatic vocal presence on VH is extraordinary...as insistent and energetic as Ed's wonderful guitar playing. They were a truly seminal rock 'n' roll band that defined their own era. Even now, hearing "Little Dreamer" raises the fur on my arms. I remember thinking at the time that VH's debut sounded vaguely menacing, but not at all like Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin who sounded mysterious in very different ways. Surprisingly, I find that "Van Halen" is as exciting to hear today as it was to the ears of the 10 yr. old boy that I was in 1978, sitting in my p.j.'s dropping a needle into the grooves of the classic slab of vinyl...over and over again. Brilliant!!!!

- RIP the legend

What a special guitarist. Lucky to have seen EVH

- Sounds like something I know

This band’s awesome music is almost parallel to AC/DC. I can now call this another piece of my heavy metal album, thank you Van Halen

- The Best Van Halen album.

I remember wearing out my 8-track tape of this album when it came out in 1978. David Lee Roth, Alex and Eddie Van Halen with Michael Anthony at there best. Must have for your rock and roll collection.

- R.I.P. Eddie!

Very sad to hear the news. I'm personally not the biggest Van Halen fan but Eddie was a very important figure in rock music. This is a massive loss for the rock and metal community. Rest easy, Eddie.

- The lost Art of RocknRoll

.... Gone but not forgotten

- Best. Debut. Ever.

This album is completely flawless, beginning to end. An absolute must-buy.

- Great

One of the best debut albums of all time

- RIP EVH

A perfect slice of history from when rock (rightfully) ruled the Earth.

- Eddie

There is nobody on the face of the earth that can out play Eddie

- RIP EVH

I can remember where I was the first time I heard this album. I was living in Prattville, Alabama and I was at my friends house in his room when he put the record on by a new band called Van Halen. Running with the Devil started it off but it was Eruption that blew me away. I could not believe what I was hearing! I had never heard anything like that before or since (to be quite honest).

- best album ever

van halen can't be stopped

- Mastered for iTunes?!?

This edition of this album sound WAY over compressed! I also have the high definition 192Khz version of this album and it’s totally fine. Apple is supposed to be using this same HD master for the Mastered for iTunes stamp. They must have messed something up during the process. Apple please fix this error!

- Best Album of All Time!!!!

Hands down the best rock 'n' roll album of all time!!!!!!!!!!

- Their best album

How can you NOT give this a 5-star? I wish I was around when it first came out.

- Best album ever recorded

I don’t ever leave reviews, but this album is by far the best purchase I’ve ever made. In my opinion, album is worth any price. I’ve listened to this album start to finish at least once a day for many years, and instead of gradually getting burnt out of the songs, as is typical, I’ve only grown to love each song more and more. I still get goosebumps listening to this masterpiece. I can’t recommend it enough.

- A MUST OWN RECORD.

One great debut albums of all time. A must own. The soundtrack of a generation. The birth is of the sunset strip scene of the 1980s in Los Angeles starts here. Rip king Ed

- Jamie's Cryin'

for the loss of E.V.H., huge loss listened to Atomic Punk ten Times Today. Sad, Sad Day. I remember sitting on the school bus looking at this album cover thinking RNR as we know it just had a hole blown in it. A salute to Top Jimmy

- One of the Best Albums of All Time

No review needed; title says all.

- The Classic Van Halen Album

This along with other Davis Lee Roth era albums (VHII, Woman and Children First, Fair Warning, Diver Down, 1984) were basically the soundtrack of my youth and set the template for swagger that all the LA Bands that came out in 1980’s strived to emulate, it sure made being a kid in the 1970’s and a teen in the 80’s a great time to be alive with memories that will last a lifetime that the kids of today will never know because of all the technology and tracking of ones every movement ......I’ll take growing up then with all the fun, optimism, and friendships of my era over today 10 out of 10 times...

- R.I.P. EVH🎸

Has to be the best debut album in hard rock history! And just like Eddie was inspired by Eric “Slowhand” Clapton, Eddie has already inspired millions and will continue to inspire new generations of musicians as they try to learn the best techniques. I remember my friend Jason in my sophomore year in high school in Kona, Hi. learned to play “Eruption” and almost all of VH ‘78 the album perfectly, because he believed that if he was going to play guitar🎸he may as well learn from the best. I miss those days of yesteryear, and I agree with another reviewer, I hate 2020, F@*K Trump, F@*K COVID-19😷, and F@*K every kind of Cancer. Too many good people have died, and too many more will die. Hopefully 🙏 him and all his enablers will be voted out on Tuesday November 3rd.

- First time hearing Eruption and Running With The Devil

Every single song is great, trust me. I’ve heard every song on this album. All have a guitar solo, which are all epic, plus great lyrics by David Lee Roth. Other hard rock artists such as Led Zepplien, Boston, and AC/DC have great debut albums, but this band took what they all created and mushed it all together to create this epic album. Bravo, bravo.

- Genius work from a genius musician!

RIP EVH

- Amazing

Eruption leading into you really got me is, to me, the greatest two song duo ever. Back to back it’s just perfect. The guitar sounds like it’s being played by an alien. Omg. Evh the greatest

- Eruption

The most epic guitar solo ever.

- R.I.P

Rest In Peace Eddie Van Halen. You will be missed by all. Your inspiration with ring out for eternity. 🎸

- Magic

One of the best ever made

- Eddie Van Halen your the best guitarist ever

This guy is a pro at guitar. In Runnin' With the Devil he was so good. Then David Lee Roth your one of my favorite front man. This debut album I think is one of the best debut albums of all time. Van Halen you guys are really good

- One of the Best

A quintessential must have for any classic hard rock collection. Even if you didn't grow up with this music, it should be in your collection. The entire album is excellent.

- Officially The End of an Era

I heard the first Van Halen album when it came out in ‘78 and was completely blown away as a 14yo kid who was learning guitar. Like everyone else who heard it back then, Eddies virtuosity on the guitar was and still is mind bending to hear. I was an immediate fan. Every time I listen to an EVH solo it still gives me chills. His music still holds up. His playing is still technically light years more advanced than many who have come after him and before him as well. We as music lovers who will be around 100 years from now, will still marvel at his guitar playing. Rest in Power Eddie. I’m sure all the greats are jamming with you up in heaven. I’m also sure your guitar playing is the music throughout the clouds and on g-d’s playlist.

- Awesome, but dead

Van Halen’s music is awesome! I miss EVH though. I’d wanna hear him play Eruption till his fingers bleed. So freaking cool!

- 2015 Remaster?

Is this the 2015 Remaster? Sounds quiet more like the 2000 one.

- You don’t own this????

You should prob either get your head checked out or you’ve been living under a rock, this album is one of the best debut albums from start to finish a rock band has ever had. Absolutely kicks butt from the second you press play all the way up to “On Fire”. Every song is A+ and meant to be played as loud as your stereo will let you. Crank it up until your ears bleed with joy.

- WHAT

Son of a b***h how does he do eruption

- RIP Eddie

I hate 2020. Goodbye, Eddie.

- Second to none...

The greatest rock album of all time. RIP Eddie. Play that guitar just as loud in heaven.

- This is Rock!!

Brings back awesome memories!! Growing up at this time was the best!!

- A masterpiece

Ahead of it’s time. Rock music like no one ever heard before. Lightning in a bottle! No one can ever replace EVH.

Van Halen Wiki

Van Halen ( van HAY-len) was an American rock band formed in Pasadena, California, in 1973. Credited with restoring hard rock to the forefront of the music scene, Van Halen was known for their energetic live performances and for the virtuosity of its guitarist, Eddie Van Halen. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. From 1974 to 1985, Van Halen consisted of Eddie Van Halen, Eddie's brother, drummer Alex Van Halen, lead vocalist David Lee Roth, and bassist and vocalist Michael Anthony. Upon its release in 1978, the band's self-titled debut album reached No. 19 on the Billboard 200 and would sell over 10 million copies in the United States, achieving a Diamond certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). By 1982, the band released four more albums: Van Halen II (1979), Women and Children First (1980), Fair Warning (1981), and Diver Down (1982), all of which have since been certified multi-platinum. By the early 1980s, Van Halen was among the most commercially successful rock acts. The album 1984, released in the eponymous year, was a commercial success with U.S. sales of 10 million copies and four successful singles. Its lead single, "Jump", was the band's only number one single on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1985, Roth left the band to embark on a solo career and was replaced by former Montrose lead vocalist Sammy Hagar. With Hagar, the group released four U.S. number-one, multi-platinum albums over the course of 11 years: 5150 in 1986, OU812 in 1988, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge in 1991, and Balance in 1995. Hagar left the band in 1996 shortly before the release of the band's first greatest hits collection, Best Of – Volume I. Former Extreme frontman Gary Cherone replaced Hagar and recorded the commercially unsuccessful album Van Halen III with the band in 1998, before parting ways in 1999. Van Halen then went on hiatus until reuniting with Hagar in 2003 for a worldwide tour in 2004 and the double-disc greatest hits collection, The Best of Both Worlds. Hagar again left Van Halen in 2005. Roth returned in 2006, but Anthony was replaced on bass guitar by Eddie's son, Wolfgang Van Halen. In 2012, the band released their final studio album, A Different Kind of Truth, which was commercially and critically successful. It was also Van Halen's first album with Roth in 28 years and the only one to feature Wolfgang. As of March 2019, Van Halen is 20th on the RIAA's list of best-selling artists in the United States; the band has sold 56 million albums in the U.S. and more than 80 million worldwide, making them one of the best-selling groups of all time. As of 2007, Van Halen is one of only five rock bands with two studio albums to sell more than 10 million copies in the United States and is tied for the most multi-platinum albums by an American band. Additionally, Van Halen has charted 13 number-one hits on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. VH1 ranked the band seventh on its list of the "100 Greatest Hard Rock Artists". Eddie was diagnosed with cancer in 2001, and died of the disease on October 6, 2020. A month after his father's death, Wolfgang confirmed that Van Halen had disbanded.
