Muse - Absolution

About Absolution by Muse Album

"Absolution" is the third studio album by English alternative rock band Muse. It was released on September 21, 2003 in the UK and on March 23, 2004 in the U.S. by Taste Music Limited. The album yielded the band's first big American hits - "Time Is Running Out" and "Hysteria", the former becoming their first UK Top 10 single. Recently it was voted the 21st best British album ever. The band spent much of 2002 recording Absolution with producer Rich Costey. The album was recorded in studios in both Los Angeles and London. Bellamy said that the band made a "conscious decision" to "get together in a room and make music", setting aside time to record the album, as with previous albums recording sessions were 'hastily arranged' and rushed. The album incorporates themes of fear, mistrust, personal achievement and joy. Bellamy said that the beginning of the Iraq War had an effect on their songwriting. Stockholm Syndrome, The Small Print, Time is Running Out and Ruled by Secrecy can all be perceived as having political undertones. The former contains lyrics such as "This is the last time I'll/ Forget you/ I wish I could" that alludes to methods of control used by totalitarian states such as Hitler's / Stalin's Cult of the Personality, which force people to form a "bond" with their dictator. However it could also be interpreted as a critical view of the way the West democracies (US and UK) after 9/11 sacrificed civil rights in the name of "the war on terror". The title "Stockholm Syndrome" (a psychological phenomenon where victims become strangely infatuated with their kidnappers) suggests that citizens of the West have become hijacked and victims of war mongering politicians by lies (the case for Iraq War). Ruled by Secrecy may also refer to Judgement Day. The Small Print was initially titled "Action Faust", Faust being a character in a play who sold his soul to the Devil in return for the Devil's service in life. This may refer to the Biblical figure of the Antichrist or simply be a metaphor- in an effort to survive, people might resort to terrible actions. However "Small Print" can be also viewed as a scream against the policies of record labels and the position of the artist. As lyrics go: "For 15 pound per year / but just the good days" can be interpreted as an exploitation of the artist, because the record label buys only what they think is good (the good days), ignoring the artists troubles (the bad days). In fact as if the artist was a machine, and when the machine doesn't have good days anymore - it gets axed (perhaps a reflection of the dispute about the "Origin of Symmetry" album and its release in the US with the record label). The album also considers how people may react to the end of the world depending on their religion or lack of it. Sing for Absolution appears to show the viewpoint of a person comforted by their love for another and perhaps their religion. Thoughts of a Dying Atheist, meanwhile offer a parallel- a person "Trapped beneath my pillow" unable to comprehend what is happening or find even a futile hope - "It scares the hell out of me/ And the end is all I can see." The track "Blackout" featured an 18 - piece orchestra. Personnel: * Matthew Bellamy – lead vocals, guitars, piano, synthesizers, mandolin on "Blackout" * Chris Wolstenholme – backing vocals, bass guitar, synthesizers on "Hysteria" and "Time Is Running Out" * Dominic Howard – drums, percussion * Paul Reeve – backing vocals, vocal samples

- The Perfect Album

I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this album. The songs on the album are all different and they're all so amazing. This is, and hopefully always will be, my favorite album of all time.

- Falling Away with Muse

I've just never seen the Radiohead comparison. Muse stands on their own as an outstanding band. Falling Away with You made me feel I was falling off into another musically beautiful dimension.

- A Masterpiece

This is not a typical "album." This is a cohesive piece; a work of art. The whole album conveys a singular sentiment and the songs transition beautifully from one to the other. Magnificent.

- Just, the best

Come on. You haven’t heard this album yet?

- Brilliant

First off this is a great album and you should buy it. What I really came to say is regarding the Radiohead comparison. I first heard these guys at Warp tour promoting Absolution in like 2003. My first thought was that they sounded like a Radiohead (c. The Bends) clone. Like it was just an undeniable fact in my mind. Then again, I said a similar thing about Weezer's blue album, that it sounded exactly like the Pixies. When a sound is new and you have little to compare it to, this happens. As time goes on and other bands fill in the gaps, the comparison seems less and less striking.

- BUY THIS ALBUM

This album (besides Origin of Symmetry) is probably Muse's best album. It has the perfect blend of upbeat, electrifying songs like The Small Print, Stockholm Syndrome, and Thoughts of a Dying Atheist mixed with some slow yet beautiful songs like Blackout, Endlessly, and my favorite, Falling Away With You. Your Muse collection hasn't started and surely isn't complete without this masterpiece of an album.

- How can you not like this

Track by track 1. Intro- it's an intro. The end 2. Apocalypse Please- As a Christian it's a little insulting, but I do think it's funny. As a song it's really dramatic and really good. 9/10 3. Time Is Running Out- great bass line great everything you need this song 10/10 4. Sing For Absolution- Also great. If you find the piano verses boring then just listen to the climax. Amazing 10/10 5. Stockholm Syndrome- I know people love this song, but it personally just feels like a 7 minute guitar drum pound, which gets boring after about 4 and a half minutes. (Exaggeration) 6/10 6. Falling Away With You- the acoustic guitar is amazing and I wish it had been kept acoustic for the entire song or instead of making the electric so loud. It's still amazing though and totally 9/10 7. Interlude- it's an interlude. The end 8. Hysteria- Really powerful bass line really powerful guitar and singing. Just buy it. 10/10 9. Blackout- Meh. Not real memorable, not bad. Slow ish song 7.5/10 10. Butterflies and Hurricanes- can't say a whole lot, it's pretty good. 8/10 11. The Small Print- Ok, not a huge metal fan but this song.. This song is beautiful. 10/10 12. Endlessly- I know people love this song but it's just so boring and irritating... 6/10 13. Thoughts of a Dying Atheist- it makes you think while providing a great song. Again, I'm a Christian but still... The only real quirk I have is just bounce back and forth between this songs intro and Sunburn's... I'm pretty sure it's the exact same... 9.5/10 14. Ruled By Secrecy- haven't really thought about this track much. Rather disappointing end but it's not bad. Kind of like Blackout. 7.5/10 Overall 9/10

- My Favorite

Easily my favorite album of all time. I love every track on this album, and I think it is great because in terms of individual tracks, they're all really good, but as an album, it just feels so nice and transitions extremely well. Every song feels like it transitions into the next perfectly. You can't even come close to wrong with any of the tracks, but my favorites are Stockholm Syndrome, Falling Away with You (along with Interlude), and Blackout. This is a perfect album in my opinion, and I don't think it will ever be surpassed. Oh yeah, and the album art is AMAZING, and I think it fits perfectly with the album. I really don't get how people could possibly not like this album, especially after a few listens when you really understand it.

- Not their best but my favorite

Personally, this is my favorite of their albums. Each track could be a single. Their music touches on so many genres without loosing flow or continuity. I think it’s the best record of theirs to start with if you haven’t heard them before.

- Begening to End, Masterpiece

Do yourself a fovor, put on some headphones, listen from begining to end and let your mind wander.. this album is Amazing! "Thoughts of a Dying Atheist" is my personal deep-cut favorite.

- The best

A masterpiece.

- fabulous

the entire album is awesome, i highly recommend buying this.

- Our time is running out!!!!!!!!

This is an iconic Muse album. Time is Running Out, Stockholm Syndrome, Butterflies and Hurricanes, Sing for Absolution, and Hysteria are some of my favorites but every song on this album is incredible and haunting. A must buy for everyone who wants to get into muse.

- Best Album To Date

Every song is amazing, best album to this day. Wish they’d make a sequel/pt.2 to this album… I LOVE IT

- I enjoy

:>

- Aah, Muse.

This album just shows how great Muse is! From hard hard rock, to peaceful love songs all in the same album, and all of the songs being awesome, this is a must own for any Muse fan or rock fan.

- I thought this was their best

I think this is their best album. When I first heard them I did in fact think they sounded like Radiohead but over the years of listening closer, I think they have a distinct sound which is oftentimes heavier than Radiohead. I also heard some Queen in their sound which is more pronounced on their later recordings. Almost every song here is a winner and the music is, well, very intense.

Absolution Wiki

Absolution is a theological term for the forgiveness imparted by ordained Christian priests and experienced by Christian penitents. It is a universal feature of the historic churches of Christendom, although the theology and the practice of absolution vary between Christian denominations. Some Christian traditions see absolution as a sacrament—the Sacrament of Penance. This concept is found in the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, Oriental Orthodox Churches, Assyrian Church of the East and the Lutheran Church. In other traditions, including the Anglican Communion and Methodism, absolution is seen as part of the life of the church, with the Thirty-nine Articles and Twenty-five Articles respectively counting absolution amongst the five rites described as "Commonly called Sacraments, but not to be counted for Sacraments of the Gospel". Confession and Absolution is practiced in the Irvingian Churches, though it is not a sacrament. The concept of private absolution within the life of the Church is largely rejected by the Reformed tradition that includes the Continental Reformed, Presbyterian and Congregationalist denominations.
