- Im not mad... I'm disappointed

I always been a fan of deftones... But to me they always had a stand out sound, edgey and aggressive. This album sounds very boring and extremely lacking that "groove" only deftones carried. They need to go back to their roots, where they stand out. Albion like adrenaline, around the fur, whit pony... I mean, there's so ma h songs to me that when heard, u get goose bumps and get a shot of adrenaline...teething is such an underrated song, that style is crazy good. For this album, tome it's forgettable:-(

- KRAP

What is this? I'll tell you it's KR@P!

- Ugh...

Never understood the hype with this band. It's always the same distorted slow chord strumming with whiny vocals. Don't know why I though this might be different, every song sounds the same and has the same formula. Uninspired.

- New but still sounds like the Deftones I know and love

I'm glad the Deftones seemed to have stepped out of their comfort zone some and then also worked a few more songs with that beautiful melody they're so good at. Every album always grows on me. Great album, in my opinion.

- Gore

Even when others think it's not the best Deftones album it's still better than 90 percent of anything else out there. In my opinion the Deftones can do no wrong! Get it!

- Great band great Album

I've loved this band since 1998 and they just keep getting better and better. They are even better live!

- Leaving much to be desired

Patiently await every deftones album and they never disappoint. Some of my favorite songs come from Koi no yokan and Diamond Eyes so I feel I have grown with them. Unfortunately this entire album left me hanging. Waiting song after song for that tune that would bring me back in and say, “Yup, this is the deftones I know”. well its not on this album. I hope their next work brings back the balance that is deftones. Until then..

- What happened??

The last album was so great!! What happened on this one?? I've listened all the way through at least 7 times and not one song sticks with me. The only excitement I get is when the album ends. So disappointed.

- Takes a few listens

Ok so I see a lot of bad comments on here. Deftones are by far my favorite band. So while this album isn't my favorite it's definitely still a great album. The more I listen the more I like it. Chino himself said its not a first listen. So save your judgements people. This is still Deftones and it's a great album. Chino left his mark on this more then in the past and that's just fine by me. The man can do no wrong. I will say I'm a little disappointed that Steph isn't more prevalent on the record. Steph said in an interview that he had a hard time getting into it, and it shows here. Now that being said its still a great Deftones record. Must buy for any fan

- DEF TONE

When I got the album, on the first listen, I was a bit disappointed, but the funny thing, I knew I would need to listen to it 3 or 4 times to see how amazing this album is! Every Deftones album is different, and that is what we love about them. Of course it has been influenced by Chino's side projects, but how could it not, this ablum comes after 10+ years of Chino experimenting on different sounds, I would imagine it impossible to completely block out previous work. Nevertheless, this album is once again completely different and unique from any previous release, and that is the reason we love and await new material by Deftones as we always know to expect the unexpected.

- A few good tracks

I'm a huge deftones fan and almost every album I have enjoyed thoroughly. However with this album something is missing.. There are a few good songs like Doomed User and Phantom Bridge but most of the others are just off. Maybe this album will grow on me but I'm just not digging most of this album yet.

- A spacey kind of different Deftones album

Listened to this album twice so far. 2 tracks really stand out: Phantom Bride and Prayers/Triangles. Doomed User is decent, albeit repetitive. My guess is that this is an album that requires multiple listening and will grow on you over time. Definitely has more of a White Pony/Saturday Night Wrist feel to it. Saying that it's nowhere as good as Koi No Yokan or Diamond Eyes would be a disservice...this is a completely different feel than those two albums. If you're looking for the more metal-type edge that those two albums (along with Adrenaline, and Around the Fur), then you won't find it here. Stick with it for more of a mellowed out version of the Deftones.

- Saturday is not alright for fighting

Hey it's better than Saturday night wrist. 😃

- Almost a complete let down

I can say that the Deftones I have dearly loved since Adrenaline are no more. This album feels extremely lazy and is very poorly mixed and produced. It almost feels like they were just putting something out to satisfy the record contract. There is no substance to this album and the bulk of it contains the worst songs they've ever written. The backbone of the 'Tones which is the ferocity of Carpenter and Cunningham have been traded for soft melodic rock and it is clear that the Deftones have become none other than an additional "side-project" for Chino. It is very unfortunate, but like most other good things, they eventually come to an end.

- Deftones "Gore"

Well balanced, moody, and room for several listens that will differ each time.. Has been on repeat since release, and I am still finding different elements in each second of each song. Bravo. 5/5

- Lacks the groove of recent releases

I loved Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan but this album sounds too close to the self titled album and thus itself really only has a few stand out songs but the majority of the album sounds alike and I couldn't really sing along or tell where I was along in the album while gaming. Maybe with repeated listens it'll grow but not their best effort. Standouts include Prayers/Triangles and (L)mirl. That was it for me.

- Meh

This album falls so flat for some reason. It's like they didn't try as hard. Koi is so good, and all of the others. I play them all the time. Maybe I just need to give it another go...although twice didn't do it. No big hooks. Mellow. Still can't wait to see them in Philly. I went from 2stars to 4. I'm liking it in the mellow mood I'm in at the moment. Little Team Sleep action but more melodic. The Yamah system helps. Ha

- PfBuff Statement

In the review by PfBuff I have to point something out... He writes and I quote "Doomed User is decent, albeit repetitive." Now think about that for a second. The song is about a doomed user and the song is repetitive. Doomed users repeat their habit over and over. Don't you think that was the point of the song PfBuff, to be repetitive. Hilarious!

- Holy sleepy times!

Snoozefest!

- Prayers

Prayers song got me here

- BEAUTIFUL CHAOS

I have to think the negative reviews are either upon 1 pass listen or from strickly metal fans wanting the old band back. They just delivered us two pretty hard albums and I think they were so smart by going a different sort of deconstructed approach on this. I will admit I was thrown off by the signles and worried it wouldnt be good but I have been listening through, everyday since its release and can honestly say this is some amazing material. I am really loving this more and more as the days pass and find myself choosing a new favorite song. The album really flows, perfect sequencing and the textures and writing is stellar for a band this far in their career. The pushed themselves, maybe in a different direction, but I truely think that was the smartest thing they could have done for their legacy, instead of dishing the same old fomula.

- Great Album

I was hesitant at first since I couldn't get into Deftones last album but this album proves much better for me. If you haven't listened to do it, do it!! You will not be disappointed.

- Unfortunately not their best work

Boring. That's what comes to mind when I first listened to this. This album has no variety to it at all. It feels like for the most part that it is one big long song. White Pony is usually hailed as their best album and I would agree. Its songs ranged from the slower paced Digital Bath to the destined to be radio hit Change (in the house of flies) to the ultra heavy Elite. I am not against them slowing the pace and showcasing Chino's singing, but I'd like them to remember their roots and incorporate a little of that in the mix. To me slow does not mean a band has grown or have become better song writers. It just means a talented band has a new vision.

- Another quality Deftones release...

Been a Deftones fans since the beginning…Gore is good/really good. It’s not fair to compare it to other Deftones albums…listen, love, share with friends. A solid release from a solid band.

- Deftones

Just put Gore "album"on repeat and you'll stay satisfied, guaranteed. Deftones all time hits (oldest > newest) 2 per album. Greatest hits!!! 1) Minus Blindfold 2) One Weak 3) Be Quiet and Drive 4) My Own Summer 5) Digital Bath 6) Change 7) Needles and Pins 8) Bloody Cape 9) No Ordinary Love 10) The Chauffeur 11) Mein 12) KimDracula 13) Diamond Eyes 14) Prince 15) Swerve City 16) Tempest 17) Doomed User 18) Phantom Bride.

- Give it a few listens.

If you're a fan, don't listen only once and write it off. This album is really good. People expect artists to stay the same through a 20 year career and that is not realistic. There is a nice mix of Heavy and soft here.... I'm happy with this. 👌🏼

- Best Album Since Saturday Night Wrist

This album is a LOT moodier than the last two. It seems to have a more unified flavor to it. Although, I think it is rather interesting to name one's album "Gore," yet feature a flock of flamingos as the artwork. It's not my call, though. I'm totally behind the Deftones no matter what route they take. Stef did mention this album wasn't his favorite to be a part of. I can definitely tell that Stef's style has gradually been disappearing out of the scene over the years, which is honestly too bad. Stef is one of my favorite guitarists, namely my favorite 8-string player. While this album didn't have my favorite tracks for all of Deftones, I think it was one of their more solid and unified albums that they've released for a very long time. Prayers/Triangles - 9/10 Some people really didn't like this track because it didn't wow them as much as past singles. I disagree. The ambient guitar in the verses sparkle like never before. The chorus is really catchy too. Acid Hologram - 7/10 Solid follow-up to the first track. I'm surprised people don't like this one either. I love the bridge where Chino sounds like he's talking to himself while Stef's riffs shake the room. Doomed User - 8/10 My least favorite of the singles, but still a solid song. The 5/8 and 6/8 alternation is fantastic and the 8-string riffs are brutal. Geometric Headdress - 7/10 I love the 5/8 time signature in the verses. It really makes this song danceable in a timing we're not usually accustomed to. Hearts/Wires - 8/10 The Pink Floyd-like intro wasn't super appealing to me, but the track is great when it gets started. I love the emotion behind the chorus in this one. Pittura Infamante - 5/10 This is the only low point in the album. It's still a fun song, though. The bridge kinda sounds like Chevelle to me (maybe other people thought so too). Xenon - 8/10 Great chorus on Chino's part! I also love the riffing in the verses. (L)mirl - 7/10 People point to this track as being one of the most refined, I think. But I'm not sure I enjoy as much as others do. The intro is the best part, but it doesn't reappear, so I didn't love that. It's still a good track, but I didn't find it to be the treasure that most others did. Gore - 7/10 Heavy track! Although, the doom metal-paced section at the end is a bit too drawn out. But at least it's the eight-string guitar. Phantom Bride - 8/10 This track could've beena single along with the other three. It's composed very well. Jerry Cantrell really adds to this as we hear the first guitar solo on a Deftones song. Rubicon - 9/10 Favorite track from the album. And I'm glad it's the LAST track! The best part is the emotion behind the chorus. Chino nails this song, and Stef really supports it.

- it's a good album.

I love it.

- Awful

I've been a fan since day one but this album is awful.

- Solid Album

This is definitely one of their best albums in my opinion, Phantom Bride is probably my 2nd favorite Deftones song right behind Tempest

- Career Departure - Career Highlight

I've heard some complaints about this album being too 'Team Sleep' and too much Shoegaze and not enough sludge. This is not untrue - as with any long-suffering Deftones fan, I absolutely live to hear the (oft-cited) push-pull between Stef Carpenter's unmistakeable sludgy guitar riffs and Chino's once-in-a-generation vocals. This album is certainly not their heaviest. Stef's well-publicized dissatisfaction with his role in this album clearly shows - it is easily the 'lightest' album they've put out. Having said that, anyone who experienced albums like 'Saturday Night Wrist' (you could hear the tension with every beat) or even 'Diamond Eyes' (which was a liberation of sorts and a powerful creative renaissance) will know that this band thrives on the creative differences between the individuals, and the tense end product. This is definitely a 'tense' album, and while I was a little disappointed there wasn't a "Rocket Skates" or "Elite" type track, to me, Gore opens yet another door to this band and its creative exploits. While "Prayers/Triangles" sounds vintage Deftones (more Chino than Stef), "Acid Hologram" truly sets the tone for what to expect with this album: a cornucopia of sludgy riffs, understated (and underrated) methodic drumming, and all the atmosphere you can handle. This is very much a "let's get stoned and listen to this" type album, but the scope of their creativity, while not very heavy, is broad and frankly very beautiful. I was hopeful for a louder album (please release 'Eros,' guys!), but I can honestly say that Gore stands alongside 'Saturday Night Wrist' and 'Koi No Yokan' as being incredibly artistic, tense, and absolutely gorgeous. Metal heads, give this one a chance - these guys only get better.

- Wow.....This is the worst Deftones record

This CD tries to be Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan's offspring but doesn't even hold a candle to either...This is very slow and disoriented and just all around boring. I am with Stephen lets get more metal on the next record please!

- Love this album!

It's like Deftones meets 90's Pink Floyd.

- Deftones’ Most Challenging Album Yet

As a long time fan since Adrenaline, I’m thrilled to hear Deftones take their music is yet another direction. “Gore” is easily their most challenging record yet. It took me a few play throughs to finally get it. These songs are definitely meant to be paid keen attention to, focused on, and listen to at high volume. I would not recommend this album to be played as background music. Like a good book, the listener ought to play this record, lie down, and give it their full attention. My favorite song on the album has to be “Gore.” The guttural roar at the end sounds like Deftones summoning a demon. Truly visceral music.

- It's alright..

Been a Deftones and Chino fan for a good while now, this album is good but a little disappointing to me. I don't like how there's so much reverb in his voice, it just sounds more like yelling than singing to be honest, maybe it's also partly due to him not having young vocal chords anymore that could take a beating when they were touring and producing albums in the mid 2000's and still produce a spectacular melodic vocal track with alot of harmonic overdubbing ... But more importantly they have lost their touch with being a hard driving metal band with soft lyrics that has been fantastic to hear in the past albums up to Koi No Yokan. However, I am still awaiting the next one as always, hopefully they will try a new approach to what they have now..

- The Matrix is real!!

I know this reference is a bit dated, but its the only way to describe how the Deftones manage to continually up their game. I dont see another way around it. They are hard-wired into my soul and the architect has provided them with a digital copy of my sonic DNA. It's a genuine priveledge to be a part of their evolution. They are the composers of the soundtrack to my dreams and nightmares!

- Gore is Great

Since it seems to be a requirement, I'll start this by saying I'm a long-time Deftones fan. With that said, I love this album. It's still too new to me to put it in the running for my favorite of theirs, but I'll be honest, the only album that comes close to White Pony is Diamond Eyes. In any case, I really dig Gore. For me, what makes Deftones is their ability to embrace the heavy riff driven songs and the melodic songs with the same level of creativity. If these guys suffer from anything, they suffer from a portion of their fans that would rather hear them put out the same album again and again. I'm not one of them. I'm always excited to hear what the artists I follow come up with. I'm excited to hear them break new ground. My being a Deftones fan is no different. "Prayers/Triangles" is a great opener. Great riffs. Great atmospheric sound. "Rubicon" creates an awesome book-end effect. Everything in between is equally as impressive. From "Hearts/Wires to "Xenon" to the title track, I'm digging this record.

- I feel horrible for saying this but...

This was rather difficult to listen to all the way through. Of course it’s no ‘White Pony’ or Self Titled, etc. But I never expected to be this… displeased… (Long time fan)

- Disappointing......again

Each album just keeps getting worse and worse. Deftones is one of my favorite bands but I can not support this album. Chino is doing too much and the band needs to get back to basics. Hard to hear this when you have such high expectations.

- Blecchhhh

This album sounds awful. Maybe it’s the mix, the master, or the compression, makes me want to move to vinyl.

- Pure rock album

Acid Hologram just grinds it out. Hearts/Wires has a Cherry Waves feel to it. (L)mirl is outstanding and Rubicon leaves you wanting the next album. The evolution of this band is outstanding.

- DEF worth the purchase

Stellar album

- LISTEN to the album!

I can listen to this album all day. At first I didn't think I would like it, but I let go of my expectations. We should all know better than to expect a new Deftones album to sound like the previous albums. One reviewer just labeled the tracks as "forgettable" yet they loop over and over in my head when I'm not listening. If you're a fan it is a must buy.

- They're innovating...

I have been a fan of this band to the point of tears. Their music has been therapy and direction for me through good and bad. Whilst looking at the extensive timeline of their music, backed by consistent success and support, Gore is a byproduct of their obvious deep desire to innovate as a band. Yes, Stef had his share of reclusiveness on the writing process/album, and it does honestly upset me, but I also noticed at a live show that he's playing some more dissonant and ambient parts now. Expanding his horizons, if you will. Maybe he's growing, changing, maybe they all are. We as humans are all finding our ways in life, even this band. The beauty is that you don't know where you'll really be tomorrow, this band didn't know. Let life happen. I honestly believe that Gore will ferment wonderfully and stand a long test of time. It will change people's perception of taste, even though now it's a hard pill to swallow for some. That's the genius of Deftones. They know how to create timeless music, somehow completely and subconsciously change your taste to accommodate them, and pass the harsh test of time with flying colors.

- Sad but true

I gave it three stars because it’s OK and I do like it. But I kept listening to every song hoping for so much more. The whole album felt safe and didn’t push a lot of boundaries. For some artist that isn’t a bad thing. But Deftones are known for pushing boundaries and evolving lyrically and musically. There definitely are some bright spots but for the most part the album falls flat for me.

- Keep listening to it

I was thrown off at first. Thought this album a flop. But i bit the bullet and kept listening. It more than grew on me. It became my white pony. It's so fresh to your senses. I'm in love all over again. Thank you deftones. Never stop creating.

- Garbage

This albums horrible. I can see why Stephan hates it. Don't buy.

- Album will take shape after repeated listens!

On most deftones albums I feel instantly mesmerized with gratification. Although this album was a little different, no instant gratification here. With that being said, I have grown to love this album. On my first listen, I was digging the first half but by the second half the tracks were coming off a little dull and boring. Weird thing is now I'm enjoying the second half about the same if not more than the first half. "Hearts/Wires" is where the album starts to change its pace. The track is really low key and easy to overlook but on repeat listens the song is really captivating. It has a Palms(Chino/Members of Isis side project) like vibe that is nice and calm. The next track "Pittura Infamante" was also kind of just there on first listen but as of now it might be my favorite song on the album. The song drives forward with never letting up and isn't heavy nor melodic. It hits all the right notes for making a fun, uptempo and catchy track! I'd say that one complaint I've read from many fans on this album is that it doesn't have any stand out tracks or that it is boring. I'd actually like to say that those statements are kind of truthful but at the same token it's the initial interpretation of the album. If those same fans gave this album some time to grow, they might find there's actually a lot of substance within these songs that for whatever reason are overlooked on first listen. As of the other songs that make a strong impression after repeated listens are the last three tracks. Starting with the album titled track "Gore" which is a dark, slow plodding, groove heavy number that has an nostalgic deftones style that older fans like myself should appreciate. "Phantom Bride" is a solid melancholy ballad that's written with somber lyrics plus having Jerry Cantrell on the latter portion of it is an awesome bonus. And then there is the closing track "Rubicon" which I loved on first listen. It's a typical heavy/melodic deftones song but as a closer it makes it more memorable due to the album not having a similar style. The chorus soars on this track and feels therapeutic/uplifting for a nice way to end the record. But then there's the outro to the album that brings back that gloom and impending doom kind of like the band winking at us saying "nope the dark/evil still lurks out there".

- Still Without Equals

The 1990's yielded some of the most cliched and forgettable “metal” bands in quite some time. However, this era also gave us the ever-creative and always uncompromising Deftones. Just as with past albums, “Gore” is not a standard hard rock album, but an artistic amalgamation of energy, melody, and emotion. The album is quite strong as a whole, yet each track can easily stand on its own. Chino's vocals simultaneously cut through and complement the musical storm of the band. The spark of experimentation resonates throughout, yet never exceeds the listener's capacity to continue on the auditory journey. “Gore” is another masterful album from a band that seems only to get better with time. Be it alternative metal, experimental hard rock, or art rock, Deftones' have a style all their own that is unlikely to cease any time soon. Personally, I hope to see Chino and his guys continue to rock for us well into a “Rolling Stones” amount of time. Furthermore, I'd bet I'm not the only one hoping for such longevity.

- Title

I like songs like God's Hands, Mx, Shove it, Lhabia, Goon Squad, Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away), Crenshaw Punch (I'll Throw Rocks At You), Beware (The Water), Beauty School, Rivière,- I am not $upporting this lyrics are always interesting but I can't get jiggy with these melodies they sound like theyre for old people who are ordinary.
