- Good stuff

Ran into some dude that said he was the manager of this guy in Grand Rapids, MI. Gave him a listen and I gotta say I can dig this in a good way. Miss the ol' country greats but wanna blast something new outta your radio? This is your new dude and this album here is a solid one even with a cover in it.

- Blown Away

I have been listening to this album on repeat since it came out. The songs are a perfect memorandum for his son, and the horns give it a groovy, fun feel. Yes, it is different than the last two. But that's what makes it so wonderful. True artists have many different influences - jazz, blues, country, rock. For Sturgill to go out on a limb and produce something out of his norm is ballsy. And, let me tell you, it payed off. If you appreciate good music, no matter the genre, you're going to dig this album.

- A good album.

With this album people expected traditional with a blend of outlaw with his own little touch like his previous releases though i think sturgell really made a unique country album influenced by soul and 70s rock music. While its by no means traditional it is a good album! Best songs are Call to Arms, sea stories, welcome to earth, and prepare for landing. Give it a couple spins pretty decent alt country release!

- Complete Album

This is the best complete album I’ve heard in a long time. This should be up for album of the year.

- Thank GOD! Some genre-defiance in high gear.

Thank God for Mr. Simpson. For those who are 'disappointed' in this offering, I feel bad for you. I can only assume you have had no exposure to artists who actually can sing, write lyrics, play instuments, compose on their own. In this generation of posers, pitch-fixing and computers telling suits which tones our brains respond to, it is no wonder you don't recognize a genuine ballsy talent. I an so grateful I grew up in a house that played The Band, The Doors, Otis Redding, James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, John Hiatt, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass,The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Santana, Heart, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash and a thousand more diverse sounds. Thanks to that I moved on to K'eb M'o and Vangelis, John Mellencamp and Midieval lutes. Pull the plug on corprate programming and your own narrowly defined sensibilities. Open your minds, open your ears - this is good stuff.

- Sturgill Goes Overboard

Overproduced, over-conceptual, and the instrumentation is over-the-top.

- Original Country Music

Two words...In Bloom.

- Sturgill is the man!!!

Absolutely fantastic album from an absolutely fantastic artist. Don't stop with this, Remember the albums meta modern sounds in country music, and high top mountain!!

- Thank you

Thank you for being true to who you are despite the critics.

- I can DIG it...

Like his last album it's a story and an experience. Music with a soul.

- Varied opinion

Do not like the "soft rock" type of music in this album. Simpson has talent, but it's not shown here.

- Amazing

Stapleton and Simpson keeping it alive

- Sturgill ain’t standing still

This is terrific. Sturgill is exploring, jumping off rocks, and basically too antsy to sit still. Some of it works, some of it doesn’t. Now and then on this album he’s out of his element, but isn’t that where an artist belongs? I love his previous work. And I love Merle, and Waylon, etc,. etc. But if I want listen to Merle or Waylon, they left plenty of recordings to keep me satisfied. If I want to listen tot “Turtles All the Way Down,” I’ve got Metamodern Sounds in my library. Yes, we always like hearing more of what we love. But when a really talented creative mind chooses not to stand still, there can be only upside. You can always still listen to the music they made that you love. But the chance that they’ll create something new and wonderful is there. And some of this is wonderful. The Beatles could have recreated A Hard Days Night 10 times, and they’d have been terrific pop songs, but we wouldn’t have Strawberry Fields, Hey Jude, or Eleanor Rigby. We’d just have ten more versions of Money Can’t Buy Me Love. I’ll suffer through Revolution #9 for that. And I’ll take a misstep here and there from Sturgill to hear his baritone against a Motown horn section. This is a damned good album.

- Incredible album!

No doubt this album is quite different from his others, but it is very refreshing none the less. Sturgill is doing a stellar job at filling the void left by all other "country musicians". It's nice to hear music with some substance and depth vs the generic fireball, jacked up trucks and dirt roads songs that litter the radio. Keep em coming Sturgill!

- A sailors guide to earth

Very disappointing. I had touted Sturgill to friends as a great new talent, and hope they don't tune into this. What's with the ocean theme, the coast has moved to Nashville?

- Everything that went Wrong with Country Music in Microcosm

Adding elements from rock and soul cheapen the recording; it is either reluctant or dishonest country. Unfortunately, that is the formula that major record companies want, and that's how country got into the mess it's in. Moreover, this is a boring collection of songs unless you want the novelty of hearing Nirvana with Randy Travis as a frontman.

- Utterly Amazing

I never write reviews but felt like it would be a disservice to all music fans if I didn't for this album. Instantly after listening this became one favorite albums. Sturgill is a genius!!!

- ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Yes. So much yes.

- Incredible

Every song

- Outstanding!

This is one of the best albums I've ever heard! It is so funny to read the other reviews here and realize that some folks just don't get it! I'm glad Sturgill is out there making the albums that HE wants to make! I can't seem to take this record off my turntable

- Where did the sound go???

Thank god I still have Whitey Morgan. This isn't the sound that made me love your music. Don't let the suits get in your head man. You where fine before them.

- OMG Just Awful..WHO likes this???

I was hoping for Country, a modern country outlaw sound but instead I got something closer to 90s Enigma. Listen to the samples....it doesnt get better.

- Amazing

Everyone that doesn't like this album can go back to flg or Luke Bryan. Because he wrote sung and produced all of this. He has his own style an not everyone will like at first because of its distinct difference but give it a few listens an you'll be singing along. Good music

- Best album of all time

To all of y'all that are giving it two stars... Go back to listening to Luke Bryan and FLGA line. You can't understand real music. Skinny jeans vs sturgills converse? Uhh is that a question?

- Producer

To those saying go back to the old producer.... He produced this album himself, so if you don't like it then you don't like the truest Sturgill. This album is not as "country" as his others but if you do you're research you'll find out that he was not aiming for the Waylon sound. Good album, he put his heart into this one.

- Listen to the whole thing

This is a great album. So its not the phycadelic merle reborn tribute you though it was gonna be? Some folks think that every song on a new album should sound like their favorites on the last one. Give the guy some credit for trying something new. There’s a lotta country on here. The last three songs on the album are epic. Oh Sarah hits pretty dang hard at the end. Listen to every song straight through a couple times...I get some of the same hairs standing up as I did when I first heard Robert Earl Keen’s Walking Distance. Sturgill knows what it means to make and album...Bravo for making music his own way.

- Thank You God For Sturgill ❤️

There are truly very few artist or true talent in country music anymore. Just your record company cut from the same mold tight pant, cowboy wannabe's Luke/Jason/Eric's yada yada... Sturgill and his band are gifted, original, PURE talented musicians who are a much needed revival to a over saturated bubble gum generation of lost country/rockabilly sound. Do your ears and soul a favor and buy more Sturgill !!!!

- Wonderful!

I am not a fan of country music; however Sturgill Simpson is an exception. His music is moving and reminds me of old country albums my parents listened to when I was a child. I had the opportunity to see him live, and it was amazing!

- Bad

I love the first album. I have memorized the words, own a Sturgil shirt and force his music on my friends. This album is a no go for me. I'm good with him keeping my cash but after 3 plays I'm done. Sorry but not a fan.

- Solid, Entertaining, Unique.

Fantastic album. It doesn’t get boring. Lots of diversity.

- What a disappointment.

I have never made a review but couldn’t stop due to listening this three times hoping I would love the album. First, I love listening to artists like Miles Davis, but trumpets, horns or whatever this is does not mix. I think “In Bloom” and “Brace for Impact” are awesome, but the rest is, in my opinion, horrible. It reminds me of the Black Keys when they became commercialized. When I know the trumpets are coming I always bite my lip in hopes it gets better. Alas, it doesn’t. It’s like George Straight decides one day to get rid of his fiddle and steel guitar thinking a tambourine would sound great in its place. Maybe ACDC up and decides to go acoustic one day. Just doesn’t fit. Sturgill’s song writing is great in this, and yes I know it is a concept album. I live near where he grew up and people are so disappointed. Oh well, it’s back to Hightop and Meta for me and hope years down the road the next is better.

- And you wonder why Pop-Country is so Popular

Reading the reviews, go figure that Pop-Country trash is so popular. People are crying that it isn't country enough, not like his old music, blah blah...He's an artist and evolving. This is an excellent testiment of his growth. If you want his previous style, then go lsiten to his older albums, but a true artist seeks growth...or go enjoy the endless songs about beers, the river, whatever ish is plaing on the radio.

- Fantastic

Breath of fresh air!

- Flying Above The Radar!!

How in the world this mans music doesn’t get much (if any) airplay is beyond me. I was just turned on to him a few weeks ago right here on iTunes with the pre-release song “Brace for impact”. It hit me like a ton of bricks!! I now own all 3 of his fantastic albums and I have to honestly say there is not 1 song that doesn’t grab me!! He to me is what you would get if you slammed Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Eric Church, And Jamey Johnson together. Absolutely AWESOME!!!

- Incredible!

Well done Sturgill! Wasn’t expecting this sound, but I love it. Keeping it real.

- LOVE IT

I think MSCM is the best album I've heard. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the musical diversity of this album and Sturgill's song writing. FABULOUS MUSIC!! "Call to Arms" could go down as one of the best ever!! Wish I could blast it around the kids with the rest of the album. It's important to be exposed to good music at an early age.

- Sturgill did it AGAIN!

Anyone who gives this album three stars or less does not understand good music. Sturgill has completed another masterpiece. It is different from his first two albums. This album proves Sturgill is a solid lyricist, and the compositions show that he is willing to push the boundaries.

- Disappointing

I was hoping for some expansion of the psychedelic twang of Metamodern. This record has strong songs but I don't connect with the sound at all. Regret buying it without sampling first.

- There aren't adequate words

But I'll attempt them anyway... The art of sitting down and listening to an entire album from start to finish, with no interruptions, is presumably one most adults don't do. My brothers and sisters, this ought not be! I bought the latest CD (not the mp3 download but the case with cover art and everything) of Sturgill Simpson's latest album, A Sailor's Guide to Earth. I had been interested in this album ever since a friend shared the cover of In Bloom with me. At the time, I thought it was interesting but it wasn't until today that I truly "got it". I had also listened to the next release "Live a Little" and knew I had to get the album as soon as it came out, but an mp3 download just didn't seem right. Getting a CD is a throwback for me (since records weren't a player for us in the casette/CD era). The artwork was amazing and I realized I might have been messing up by getting mp3 albums over the past decade or so. Anyway... Today when I listened to the Nirvana cover in the context of the album, I realized it's perfect. It's a completely new song and taken in context, it fits to tell the story he is telling. Simpson said when he recorded the album, he intended it to be taken as a whole and not carved up to get hits from. One of the most important factors into why it's so good is he wrote these songs and recorded them as a love song to his son, who is still a toddler. It's full of advice from a father to a son and it's told alongside some of the best original music I've heard in years, with lyrics that are quite profound (when I could understand them, which is always a struggle for me). His opening line is one I did understand and it sets the album up perfectly: Hello, my son Welcome to earth You may not be my last, but you'll always be my first The rest of the song continues down the same path, hitting all the daddies right in the place where all the feels are stored. There hasn't been a country concept album like this since Red Headed Stranger, at least that I can recall. As amazing as that album by his Willie-ness is, it doesn't have the heart that Simpson put into his... And frankly, this isn't even a country album. It's just what I would call "really, really, ridiculously good music", without a clearly defined genre. Since the album is one continuous flow of thought, the songs blend together to form a cohesive mesh of country, rock, funk, and everything in between (except rap - Simpson clearly got the memo there are some things you just can't mix). The guitars make your jaw drop with the sick work done by Laur Joamets, the horns are blasting some of the funkiest riffs I've heard in years, and the overall musicianship is stellar. I still can't believe he produced it himself, which tells me this guy is on that upper level of musical genius we rarely have the opportunity to actually see in action. There are some standout tracks but now that I've heard it together, I'm going to have a difficult time putting it on while I'm in the car or in any situation where I can't devote the entire 40 or so minutes to listen to it the way the artist meant for it to be listened to and the only way it should. If he plays these songs on tour in any other way than start to finish like they're laid out in the album, it'll be a travesty. That said, if there is anyone I know who appreciates art, being a parent, amazing music, the Navy, all the above, one of the above, or none of the above, you need to get this album and figure out how to sit down with some headphones on and really listen to it. I did it whole mowing today and my yard has never looked better. I promise you will not regret it. I was on my second listen through the album when the family came home from a skating party. Instead of listening to it again, I decided to "live a little" and invited my son onto the mower to help me finish mowing. I am ashamed to admit this is the first time I've ever squeezed him onto the mower because it might take a little longer to mow while he's with me. Well I'm thankful to God for giving Sturgill Simpson the ability to write beautiful songs and amazing music that can help this struggling dad connect the dots a little better. Hopefully Simpson will continue to have kids and continue to keep sending them love letters. WELCOME TO EARTH (POLLYWOG) LYRICS Hello, my son Welcome to earth You may not be my last But you'll always be my first Wish I'd done this ten years ago But how could I know How could I know That the answer was so easy I've been told you measure a man By how much he loves When I hold you I treasure each moment I spend On this earth, under heaven above Grandfather always said God's a fisherman And now I know the reason why And if some times daddy has to go away Please don't think it means I don't love you Oh, how I wish I could be there everyday Cause when I'm gone it makes me so sad and blue And holding you is the greatest love I've ever known When I get home it breaks my heart Seeing how much you've grown all on your own Hearing you cry makes me cry It made me cry Hearing me cry A thousand miles away Every cry (greatest love I've ever known) (ever known)

- Completely Addicted

I couldn't sleep the other night gratefully God had this guy on the Jimmy Fallon show. My life has been changed. I'm only beginning my journey of exploration to this genius. What I love is when I try to explain what kind of music he plays. All Around Me had me in the Van Morrison vibe, since then I have uncovered his country twang. Don't try to keep this guy in a box we will go all over the place with his music. In love. All breathtaking, all intoxicating. Hmm.

- Only Nirvana song tolerable!

Simpson is renewing my faith in musicianship in country music. The fact that he made a Nirvana song actually enjoyable to listen to is impressive. If Cobain did actually write it then this is a tribute to his contribution to music since up til now Curt's most meaningful contribution to music was two sounds, click...boom.

- Good Album...

Good album. It is no where in the direction of “High Top Mountain” or “Metamodern Sounds” which is kind of a bummer in my opinion. I will continue to buy his music and support him as an Artist but “Metamodern Sounds” was a far superior album in my opinion, which is just that, an opinion. So give it a shot, you may love it! If not, then go download his first two albums, those are both solid country gold.

- Sturgill is the man

This album is definitely different from his last. Still a great album. A must have for SS fans

- Not a fan of this one

The guy is an amazing musician & song writer. This album has a total different sound and feel than past works and that's what I was expecting. It's a well written album, but most of it is not my cup of tea. I'm already for the next one.

- Masterpiece

A bright light in the darkness of modern "country" music. A complete album that flows like a stream from start to finish. Sturgill has done it again. Best country artist in the last 30 years

- Best Country/Folk Album of this year so far

Sturgill is a true genius, his composition and his voice really take your mind and ear to an adventure

- Wrong way

The first two albums were great. The sailors guide doesn't have one song that I want to listen to again.. I have some respect for the entirety of the album (because I have 2 young kids), but it has no hooks at all... Drop the jazzy alternative junk and get real again... I am glad he didn't sing more songs about writing/singing songs though.

- Sturgill!!!!!

This man's songwriting just keeps getting better and better. The first play through of this album for me left me a tad disappointed, but then it started to grow to me. Now I think it may be his best album. Sturgill deserves every bit of success he gets!

- Astoundingly incredible CD & concert

I downloaded the CD & then saw Sturgill Simpson in concert. Both were incredibly wonderful. Can't get over the musical power of Sturgill and his band. No doubt one of the best CDs (and concerts) that I've listened to. This guy is an up-and-coming superstar, without question.

- Well Put Canpeyoke

My sentiments exactly. This is a great album... I dig the songwriting as well as the talented band... I love watching the drummer play... Just cool.
