Metallica - Spit Out the Bone

Spit Out the Bone by Metallica Song Info

This is the closing track of Metallica's tenth album, Hardwired... to Self-Destruct. Colombian radio station Radioacktiva asked vocalist James Hetfield whether the "Hardwired... To Self-Destruct" title was inspired by how people are connected to each other through mobile devices and how everyone is becoming more dependent on technology. He replied: "That as well. Sure. The song 'Spit Out The Bone', which is getting rid of the human flesh part. And machinery is so much more efficient. And ourselves as people, [we're] very… I don't know… We want things quicker, we want the convenience of technology, but at what point is convenience leaning into dependency, and we need it, or else we don't know what to do." The song's epic, dystopian music video was directed by Phil Mucci, who has previously worked with Korn, Disturbed and Stone Sour among others. "I was really nervous ever showing that to the band," Mucci admitted in a behind the scenes film. "I was nervous to show Metallica the rough cut of the video because it was terrifying. If I were them and I had read the treatment that promised all this really fun old school effects and puppets and robots and you get this green screen edit in which there's no robots, there's no puppets, there's nothing in it … so I waited until at least some of the pieces filled." The song originally ran close to 10 minutes. Metallica realized they needed to trim it, making it leaner and thinner, more concise. Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone: "That was just an adventure, man. I have versions of that song that are two to three minutes longer. We just kept going and going and going. That was also the first song where we went, 'Wait a minute, is there too much of a good thing here?' And then we started peeling it back. It was one of those where you just keep going to different universes and different modes and areas because it was super fun. It was like this journey. Old-school Mercyful Fate–type stuff was kind of the inspiration for that." James Hetfield explained the song's meaning to Metallica's fan-club magazine So What: "This is a little different, just the wonder and fear of, again, what's happening to man. Without future tripping too much, just the possibilities of Terminator, stuff like that, you know. We're wearing smart watches, things are getting closer and closer to just being in us. "Why would I not have the internet in my head all the time? Why do I have to worry with all these 'emotions' and stuff? Falling in love and getting your heart broken? That doesn't do anybody good. You know, the heart and blood? It's in the way of efficiency! We could be a much more efficient race if we just allow computers to help us. "And yeah, they are helping us, but how far does that go? All of that craziness. So 'Spit Out the Bone' is that your bones aren't needed. They break!" Hetfield took the title phrase from UK street punk band GBH's 1982 track about the 1972 Andes flight disaster titled "Passenger on the Menu." The lyrics in question are: Had no choice, lost and alone. Eat the flesh, spit out the bone. On October 13, 1972 Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed on the remote Andean peak called Cerro Seler. Many died in the crash and several others quickly succumbed to cold and injury The 16 survivors were forced to feed on the bodies of dead passengers in order to keep alive. Hefieldt said: "Yeah, thank you GBH for the 'spit out the bone' line. I know their song was a little different. Their song was about the Donner Party and cannibalism."

- Metallica still has it!

This album rocks! Metallica still got it!

- Haters are savage

I'll hunt you down all nightmare long haters. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Metallica

- Murder One

NICE tribute to Lemmy with Murder One. I like to sound of this album better than the last few. It has 5 or 6 good songs, THE deluxe edition if worth paying a couple of bucks extra.

- Dumbwired

Metallica hasn't been METAL since ...And Justice For All. Plus I heard the first song and thought they where going back to METAL, Then I listen to the next song Nope. If that is what you call METAL you need to go back to school, I'll Stick to Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Overkill, Exodus

- The hardwired album is so addictive

I wasn't so fast to fall in luv with this album. But, it's really a classic. It has everything I wanted in a Metallica album. My all time favorites all in one album. I wanted the hit the lights type of album, a ride the lightning kind of movement. It has all the rhythm of Phantom lord and and an edgier Frantic verse. It's chaotic but eloquent.

- Name Brand

Pretend this album wasn't stamped with the name brand logo of Metallica. Either way it's a crappy album. There is nothing special about it. Everybody expects this or that... Either way it's not a good album. I'd like to see these guys put out something under a different alias and see if it gets any critical acclaim. If I'm wrong good for them.

- AMAZING COMEBACK!

The album sounds GREAT! It's like a combination of Kill Em All, Master Of Puppets, and A LOT OF The Black Album, plus a small drop of ReLoad. I would call Hardwired... To Self-Destruct the perfect album for introducing someone to Metallica because it ties in sounds from the majority of the earlier albums.

- About time

It sounds like they went back to there roots a bit, about time.

- Very good album sound like they are having fun.

Before you judge listen to the 2nd CD (Tracks 7-12) some real gems here. Sure there are the refined radio play songs but Metal needs that in a world of pop rock and hip-hop. While it lacks in the old raw rage of the 1980s, this is a well recorded album and they have moved on from Bob Rock Production.

- Buy the Deluxe album

Metallica is the only band of which I've bought an album; this being #10. As stated in my subject matter, I have found myself listening to the 3rd CD more so than the other two. This isn't to say that the first 2 are bad (far from it) but the 3rd CD has some awesome material. My least favorite track on the record is Am I Savage. Too slow & repetitive for my liking that gets boring & annoying the longer I listen to it. However my favorite track is Spit Out the Bone. Mix of old Metallica with new that is simply unrelenting. Love this album and hope Metallica keeps rolling for #11. Their music has single handedly changed my life. Rock on, friends 🤘🏻

- just not there anymore

the 80's Metallica was undiscovered gold. never gonna be anything like that again, it is gone and will never be back.. hopefully they will play all the old stuff on the tour for my kid to hear.

- Metallica is the best!

I love all Metallica songs

- Yes!

One of their best albums!

- They call this METAL?

Wow, Seeing how these guys are the "Worlds. Greatest Cover Band!!" No I'm serious about that. They haven't had a real "Metal" album since 'And Justice for all". That was fresh and thrashing to the point that all you wanted to do was rock out. This "New" album is so commercialize it's not even funny. It's actually a ripe off to our ears. Do yourself a favor and don't spend another dime on this "Covers Band". Old Pantera is more metal than this double album.

- Awesome Album

This is a great album

- Best Album in a while

Metallica is FINALLY going back to their roots! i LOVE this album!

- Metallicas back time to headbang

great album thanks metallica for this great album five stars for my faviote band huge fan love the bouns songs to thanks guys

- best album of 2016

I bought this the day it released and played the hell out of it, well worth the money and best album I've heard in 2016

- Metallica is dead

How great was And justice for all Master of puppets and Kill'em all. It seens metallica's potential is buried with Cliff

- Best album in 30 years

The songs grow on you just like their old stuff. Long songs with lots of changes. The 4:00 mark of spit out the bone is one of the best riffs they've ever written. Brilliant album.

- You will think it's 1988 again

They should have called this album "...And Justice For All 2." I thought I was back in high school after I listened to it the first time. "Spit Out The Bone" is like an updated version of "Dyer's Eve." And if you have lost your copy of "Kill 'Em All" just purchase the Deluxe version and you will have several redone (harder) songs from that album at your disposal. I haven't bought a Metallica song since the sell-out "Black" album - until now. This is true 1980's Metallica in 2017--with a style like the best of Cliff Burton and Jason Newstead combined.

- Nah

This album sounds like a cover Metallica band that decided to write original material, on the positive note this album does have one good song which I like.

- Yes

Absolutely glorious, love them forever

- The more I listen, the more I like!

I was skeptical and the demos on iTunes doesn't do it justice!

- It's Metallica.....

It sounds like every other Metallica album (minus Load/Reload). Lars ripped Dave Mustaine for Cryptic Writings years ago saying it sounded like every other Megadeth album. Funny, this is by far the most bland, by the numbers Metallica album yet. Maybe I am just getting old and have listened to way too much heavy metal in my life; but this album made me feel nothing. One or two "ok" songs, but no way is this on par with early Metallica (Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice..). Very boring, very lame album. Time to retire Metallica, time to retire....

- Atlas rise

This song is awful and I love Metallica too, the rift during the chorus is literally Iron Maiden's hallowed by thy name...

- Haters. Lol

All you haters that still haven't gotten over feeling butt hurt about the Black Album 25 years ago (which was awesome, BTW) ... LET. IT. GO. Obviously, you're still checking them out if you're still writing reviews after 25 years. (On an album you won't listen to for fear you might like it) Move on. Seriously.

- *****

Metallica's best album since TBA. Moth into Flame, Halo on Fire, Here Comes Revenge, and Spit Out The Bone are highlights on the album.

- Continued Disappointment

I love Metallica and have since I could first appreciate their music in the late 80's! I so very much want them to be the band that I love, but the fact is that they are not even a shadow of their former selves. The insturmentals are repetitive and there is no diversity in the tracks. The lyrics are generic and James's voice has suffered too much formal training. When I hear their new music, I just hear a band that is desparately trying to regain what they once were, but the more that they struggle to find it, the worse their sound gets. I will never stop being a fan, but I won't lie and give their music good grades when they are utterly failing to meet expectations.

- THEY'RE BACK!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

It's got new songs, new sounds, it's all any metal fan can ask for. They need to make more albums! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

- Metal Legends

I've been a fan since 12 years of age. I'm 44 now. They lost me for a while sometime after the "black" album. This album is great! Give it a chance. Respect to one of the greatest bands of all time. Thank you Metallica for decades of in your face metal!

- Eh

Could be better

- Oh yes!!

I am still jamming this like it just came out. Great stuff guys. Can't believe after all these years you guys can still crank out a gem like this. Thank you!!

- The best

The. Best. Band. Ever.

- Sigh

This is awful. Why can't they make albums like Ride the Lightning, Kill Em All and Master of Puppets anymore? Those were masterpieces. Shocking how people can like this trash. One of the most influential bands of all time reduced to making garbage. Truly a shame.

- G

Awesome songs

- It's a Meh outa 10

The album is just ok. It's got some good moments, Atlas rise is great, Hardwired is good, and moth into the flame is great, but the album just isn't there. It's almost try hard in a way. I think the real issue is that it's not something I would really ever want to listen to over old Metallica albums, or something like Megadeth's Dystopia. It's just lacking something for me.

- Eh, still....

From Enter Sandman on I lost interest. I guess when James cut his hair was when it was all over. Just horribly redone music on this album. Like what's with the weird punk sound? Used to be creative and complex and now it's like just too lazy to really work those guitars and drums. Lyrics are horrible and he always makes that stupid weird sound at the end of some words. I can't believe they're calling it metal still. Oh well

- Awesome

Just Metallica 🤘🏻😍

- Never a great sign when the title track is the first song

I was all excited when I heard the first song hardwired , then they released another and another , then I was like uh oh , this isn't sounding like old school Metallica anymore . I don't understand why they can't get to that level of heavy anymore. It's not a terrible album It's just not what I expected

- Wow

They're back. Nuff said.

- Hardwire

Great music!

- It doesn't move me as a whole, but certain songs amaze me!

I have loved Metallica since I was 10 and good music seemed to still exist. My favorite by them will forever be and justice for all, because at the moment it arrived it spoke to me at that age and changed my tastes forever. I am different from most of their fans in that I adore the Black album, I love the SONG St Anger but not really the rest of the album. I love the songs The Memory Remains and No Leaf Clover as much as I love Master of Puppets or For Whom The Bell Tolls, or Death Magnetic. I think this album is alright. I LOVE the song Moth to Flame. Some songs sound a bit too similar to each other, some sound over produced, yes. However, compared to 99%of all " music" being done since 1999, this is great because its not R&B/Rap crap Nu-Metal NONsense. It is still Metallica and you know it at first lyric. I dislike the intro song too, but thats ok. It should not have been the early released song tho. Soured people to the rest, and the rest is fine. No, it does not sound like AJFA or Kill Em All, and why should it? Those songs have been done already, bands need to make new stuff, not copy over and over. Everyone hates on bands when they try new things and its stupid! Like people who hate Danzigs Blackacidevil just because. People will hate new Metallica just because a lot. I am giving it a fair chance! You should too.

- SPIT OUT THE BONE

If this were an EP containing Hard Wired/Atlas Rise/Spit Out The Bone/Lords Of Summer/Moth Into Flame it would be their best work since the 80's

- LOVE IT

Awesome, powerful, and frenetic. Just the way I like my metal. Great album!

- Best album since 1991

I'm a Metallica fan and not a basher. I know everyone cringes at St. Anger and thinks Load/Reload were not fast enough, but come on seriously guys. The Metallica boys know how to write and rock. Death Magnetic was a high quality album, but Hardwired feels like home. The songs are epic and cover every iteration of Metallica you could think of. It has gotten better with repeated listens and never bores me. The only song that doesn't really work for me is Am I Savage?, but the rest of the album makes up for it. Hardwired is nothing special but does feel like the old days. ManUnkind, Halo on Fire, Dream no More and Now That We're Dead are all worthy of the Metallica canon.

- MetallicA

Plain and simple!! If your a Load or Reload fan than this is the album for you!!! The 80's sound and style that is the best and always will be is gone !! Just be thankful that we got Kill to Justice out of them when we did!! This album should have been called RE-MAGNETIC!!! Best song on this is Iron Maiden cover Remember Tomorrow which was done years back but never released on a album!!!

- There is a reason

There is a reason haters give them 1 star without listening to the album. The reason is because haters are just gonna hate. This album is worth the price for just any ONE of the tracks. Dream no more is my personal fav, then atlas and moth. Spit is a old school Metallica fans wet dream as well. Go ahead haters, 120 million albums sold.

- Pretty Meh

Best work they've put out since the Black album but this isn't a heavy metal band anymore and certainly not a thrash band. They sound like Black Sabbath. Barely distorted guitars and slow, slow songs. There is 1 great tune at the end and 2-3 ok tunes on the record. The rest is about as boring as they come. Unfortunately the sound of the disc is poor just like the last couple of albums. Like classic rock with James Hetfied on vocals you may like this. Like metal and you'll be disappointed.

- They're back

- First real heavy album since justice!

Can be considered a Metallica album finally. Not disappointed this time.

- MOJO

Wow it sounds like they got there mojo back

- ITS ABOUT TIME!!!!!

The song rules!!!!! I can't wait for the album I've already pre-ordered. It has all the classic Metallica tones, and is the best material to come out of Metallica camp for 20 years. THRASH METAL IS BACK AND THE GODFATHERS ARE LEADING THE WAY ONCE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!! \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/

- Much hope!!!

This new single that was released sounds awesome, super digging it and I have high hopes for the full album when it comes out!! Can't wait :)

- Was that old school Metallica I just heard??

Where was this song in February 2014 when I was going through a rough time in my life? DAMN!! THAT'S THE METALLICA I GREW UP LISTENING TO IN THE 1980s (Master Of Puppets v2.0?)

- Martin666

F U C K I N G A W E S O M E !!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

- #AllAboardTheHYPETrain

Can't wait for the new Album!!!

- 8 Years Worth The Wait

This album is fantastic. Very different than there other ones, yet very heavy and no shortage of awesome riffs or drum grooves. Everyone sounds amazing on this record, and the sound quality is superb. Best sounding Metallica album in my opinion.

- Missed Opp

Catchy tune, but totally missed an opportunity for a fantastic solo. Sorry Kirk, your 20 second whah whah on this one just didn't cut it. You set the bar high and we want more metal! LP is prebought and ready to rock!

- OMFG

They're back!!!!!!! Omg friggin awesome first single! Hurry up November!!!!!!

- Wow!!

Wow man! METALLICA ARE BACK! THE KINGS OF METAL! LEGENDS RETURN WOTH FORCE! What an awesome song! I've been listening it for 3hours straight now!

- Metal

Just so you know Metallica are not the kings of metal,if it wasent for Dave mustaine they would be nothing.slayer are the kings of metal ,andmegadeth are a close second.metallica aren't even close.

- Potential

Everyone knows that Metallica has done nearly everything and that they're all pushing their 50's now. The creativity is running low. That being said, Hardwired sounds like an improved death magnetic. Fast, loud, and vulgar. While I'm not expecting another master of puppets, I certainly see this album going out as a top 5. Rock on🤘🏼🤘🏼

- Like what I've heard but.....

My Question are the remaining songs on the album long winded overly long??,Like the older material where the sons were short, brief.

- Metallica rules!

Love the new song! Great energy! Metallica is back after a long hiatus.

- TOO damn AWESOME \m/

I've been waiting for this for way too long!!! And holy F*** this is good, cannot stop listening!!

- not bad can't wait for the full album too come.

the first song is great can't wait for the rest too come out

- Metallica - Hardwired

Killer tune!

- Hardwired

This single is fantastic! It's like a marriage between whiplash and my apocalypse. Old Thrash but mixed with their modern sound. Doubt the album will all sound like this but it's an exciting start!

- Fan For Life

Been a fan for life! This is a magnificent return to what I've always loved about this band! Fast and raw.

- Hell of a first single boys!!

First glimpse at the new album shows huge promise. I was huge fan of Death Magnetic among all the rest except hopefully they don't revert back to the St Anger sound with the rest of the album and keep with the current direction, can't wait to see the next tour with this song live!

- Hell yeah!

Pre-order complete!

- Sick Song !!

Metallica sounds like Metallica again , been rocking out to this song for days now !!! Can't wait to hear the rest but this is a damn good start!!! Great job guys !!! 🤘💀

- \m/

This will be their best album in a ton of years.

- Wow

I just love it, it's been a long 8 years, but the day has finally come!

- Must have

Must have all of this album, amazing from what I have heard to his point.

- Killer!

Great song, cannot wait for the full album! I hate to wish summer away but come on November!

- Mediocre at best...

Sounds just like Death Magnetic. Over produced pro tooled to death! Where is that old school edge? Ok lyric wise but weak music wise. Lars needs a new drum tone...

- Awesome

Love this new track.... cant wait for the full album... been awhile, and been waiting in anticipation.... Metallica hasn't disappointed!!!!!

- Really good

Finally after 8 years we get something new, I've been listening to hard wired and moth into flame for hours now, would definaely recommend
