There has been some eager anticipation for this Elton John tribute release, with a whole posse of modern artists lined up to cover some of Elton’s pop classics and closest melodies. To start: A pumping remix of “Bennie and the Jets” with P!nk and a random throw-in by Logic, setting the scene for what could be a neon blazing party. It’s not. What comes next instead is a lesser known cover by Chris Martin from Coldplay, a song close to Elton’s heart - “We All Fall In Love Sometimes.” It contains only vocals, a creaking piano and strings - but it’s beautiful and show-stopping. When you whittle your way through the varying contributing artists - Ed Sheeran, The Killers, Miley Cyrus, etc - you really get to hear how well these talents put their own signature touches to these past hits and melodies. Especially Demi Lovato and Q-Tip funk up “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” and when Lady Gaga sings her soul out in “Your Song” with the most powerful vocals in the entire album. By the time Queens of the Stone Age say goodbye to the yellow brick road, you’ll realises why the party ends at the first song.
