Dave Matthews Band - Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin) Song Lyrics

The day you came

Naked, afraid

Young mother screams and pushes you
The day you came

Oh joy begin

Weak little thing
More precious there'll be nothing, no
Oh joy begin

Let's not forget these early days

- Loveeeee it!!!!

Dave and the boys did it again!

- Excellent release

This is a great release by DMB. The best songs are She and That Girl Is You.

- Preparing for the future

I’ve been listening to DMB since 97’ at the grand age of 5 and I’ve loved them ever since. When I first heard they were in the studio for their summer 18’ album release for number ten I had a feeling of apprehension but also, excitement. I wasn’t too sure what to expect but I figured most likely the songs they’ve been playing live since 2015 would appear on here (Black and Blue Bird, Virginia In the Rain, Samurai Cop, Death On the High Seas, etc.) but I heard Mark Batson was a producer and I immediately said “oh no” thinking they were returning to that vibe of over produced contemporary r&b. The “Stand Up” songs are great live but the album was just not very good in terms of production, which really was what I was worried about here. As I was driving home from their 6/7/18 show at Riverbend the album dropped. Opened up Spotify and Samurai Cop opens, heard it as a single and it’s a great song. After that I was immensely happy with the fact that each song is perfectly done from front to back. My only complaint is that on That Girl Is You I wish they would have jammed it at the end in the studio similar to how they build to it when they play live. Other than that I couldn’t help to feels Grux vibe across the entirety the album in terms of production. The song writing is always good. Dave’s very signature play of words is very present. Although it is a very commercial and produced sound, probably the most they’ve ever had on an album, I feel it’s an adaptation to the changing music industry. They are trying to easily secure theirselves a spot for them to bring in new fans for the next duration between albums.

- Vintage DMB

Very enjoyable album with some known songs (to those wife seen them live) and some new ones too. Interestingly, Leroi Moore, who has been gone almost 10 years, plays on more songs (2) than Boyd Tinsley (1).

- Not bad

The more I listen to it, the more I like it!

- !!!!

Amazing.

- Love it

Have been waiting for this album for years. And the wait was all worth it

- The boys are back!

Love the new album thank you DMB

- That’s it?!?

Disappointed that after six years and a “collaboration of producers” that this album was the best they could do...I still love DMB, but this effort is way down on the list for me

- God i miss LeRoi

This just isn't the same band anymore. The ideas are scarce and there is. no. fire. LeRoi was both of those. He could add something to songs that made them....and steered them....it's just not there anymore. They're not hungry. Got nothing to prove and it shows. Too comfortable...and it shows. The last 5 albums they've told us how great they are before they come out when they used to just release them and let them blow your head off. There's just nothing interesting anymore and it's a painful thing to say...

- DMB takes it up another level

The new levels of maturity in their music album after album always impresses! The DMB you love and then some!

- A grower

This album takes a few listens to click for sure. I am disappointed they moved away from the instrumentation and jam sections that were prevalent on the last two albums. But this album is great for what it is. It’s a more straight forward rock/funk album. More distorted guitar with vocals/guitar carrying the songs. It sounds like if Everyday and Stand Up had a baby that was better than those 2 albums.

- AMAZING

This band is absolutely incredible. They've blown me away again, in a completely different way.

- Oh Joy!

This is a very appropriate evolution for this band, who I have been listening and grooving to since middle school, with UTTAD. I love the inclusion of electric guitars, juicy bass and addicting, head bobbing drums. This just feels right - Virginia in the rain is a gem, and there are others here too. I feel however, that there was room here to bring back some of the saxophone magic that LeRoi brought to the sound. Maybe next time. This is such an excellent blend of old and new, some of these tracks could fit on earlier releases.

- Come on Come on

This may not be the Dave from my adolescent years, but just as I have aged and moved into different situations in my life; so has DMB. He isn’t a 20 something guy singing about sex, politics and changing the world; he’s singing about his wife, his kids and the love he has for them. I really love all the songs. Every time I listen to it, I like it even more!

- Phenomenal

I’ve been a fan since the beginning and this album did not disappoint. Absolutely in love with this and continue my love for this amazing band! See you guys in August!! Much LoVE! 💜

- BAD!

Not the Dave Matthews Band I know from the 90's. Very disappointing material!

- I “Can’t Stop” Listening to this album!

Put in some headphones and push repeat! Some excellent tracks! I can’t wait to here some of them live!

- Been waiting for this

Long long long time Dave fan, I’ve been wanting something just like this from Dave. He mixes in the old with the new perfectly and I feel that this album really shows off Dave’s unique vocals. Many of you will appreciate this album.

- Riffs

A few GREAT songs but the rest are riffs that grew out of playing the last few years. I was hoping for some songs written together in the studio by the whole band. And where is Boyd on the iTunes pic??? I’ve been to see them every year since 1995 and over 200 shows. Hope to see another album right away!

- Beautiful Song Writing!!!

The new music has beautiful lyrics! I’m particularly fond of “Samurai Cop” and “Come Tomorrow.” And, thank you for FINALLY doing a studio recording of “The Idea of You.” It 👏🏼 is 👏🏼 awesome👏🏼!!!!!

- Kids See Ghosts

Buy Kids See Ghosts instead

- Meh. The new DMB

The new DMB. Trying too hard and staying musically irrelevant. A few highlights on this album for sure, but the majority is an over produced wastes effort of some of the most talented musicians ever to sit in a room together. Such a shame.

- Oh Joy They’re Back!!!!

What an amazingly beautiful album. It’s so full of love which is what the world needs now. Favorites are That Girl is You and Here on Out. Great to hear LeRoi at the beginning of Idea of You and happy to hear a studio version of that song. Excited for a DMB summer!

- Exceeded my expectations

As a long time listener and fan, I was hopeful that this would be reminiscent of the band’s original unique sound. I am more than impressed with how wonderful this album is. It hits on every level. Highly recommend.

- Get over yourself...It’s a SOLID album

So the “get over yourself” is for all the self-prescribed experts who’ve deemed this new album “boring” or “not the same band anymore” and all that other nonsense. And interestingly....they fail to provide much evidence that they’ve even listened to any of it other than maybe preview some of the tracks. Is it the same DMB? No. But that’s what happens. Bands change and members come and go, unfortunately. This is a SOLID album and effort. I’ve been a DMB fan since the beginning and have been to many of their live shows. I was a little concerned about what this album might bring. I was happy with the first released single “Samurai Cop”. While it doesn’t quite live up to it’s live performance, it’s still a great song. Admittedly, “That Girl Is You” had me worried when I first heard it. I didn’t like it. I like it now because it’s just raw/dirty/funky Dave. It’s got a great groove if you allow yourself to get into it. I think “She” ends up being my least favorite and probably ends up being a “pee break” song at the live show. I REALLY like “Virginia In the Rain” and “Come On, Come On” and probably go with those as my two favorites on this album. It’s nice to have a studio version of “Idea of You”. The “live” beginning of the song is fun, but I wish the rest had been done slightly better. I’ve not previously really liked “Can’t Stop” at the live shows, but this album version has changed my mind. The remaining songs are good songs as well and will probably get better with more listening. Do yourself a favor and give this album a chance. Music like this is rare these days. I don’t know how many new fans this album will bring in or cater to and I don’t particularly care. If you’ve been or are a DMB fan, this new album should serve your needs just fine...if you don’t automatically write it off.

- The boys still have it!!

While the album does hold many songs played live the last few years, hardcore fanscan hear a different approach to their studio counterparts. New songs like She and This Girl Is You def dig deep into Dave's soul. Album is beautiful from front to back.

- Love forever

As always Dave Matthews band does not disappoint!!! Love the album very single song, have been listening to the band for many many years now and will continue to listen to them and see at least one concert every summer as long as they tour!!! Thank you Dave Matthews band for being a band that I can listen to every track and love every song you guys have made.

- Awesome

The music is amazing, they never disappoint. Never stop writing Dave.

- This album is great!

Wasn’t sure what this album was going to sound like and quite honestly was skeptical, but WOW...it’s really great. It’s a new sound for DMB and I really dig it. DMB 4.0 is spot on.

- Another dud

I used to be the biggest fan of DMB. I ate up every album, even the live ones. And I’d go to see the band when they were in town. But the last three albums have been a giant bore, each worse than the last. I keep checking in, hoping the band will turn it around. But no dice. Such a disappointment from a band that used to be amazing.

- Love at first listen.

It's been a long time since I was just 100% pleased with a DMB album start-to-finish. "Away From The World" has some stellar tracks, especially on the latter half, but also several songs I just want to pass by. Right now this album is vying with "Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King" for the #4 spot in my mind. The audio mix on this album is brighter and less compressed than on Big Whiskey, and I think that's part of why I'm enjoying it so much. Sounds great in the headphones AND on my speakers. While the loss of Roi's sax and Boyd's violin have changed their sound, DMB 2.0 (or perhaps we could call this 3.0 now) is still making great music.

- Masterpiece

This album is a masterpiece

- DMB

It’s still got the DMB vibe but you can tell they’re taking on different styles a bit to branch out. Still solid, just listened all the way through. Blows my mind how people can give a review before the release date and have it be wishful thinking reviews: “The time has come”...”can’t wait for this album”...etc. It is kind of annoying to people who want to actually see a fair review. So... stop being those people! Wish review on your social media accounts lol

- Picking Up Where They Left Off

Dave and his amazing band have not missed a beat! This album is simply put, beautifull from start to finish!

- Amazing Mathews!

Even after two decades these guys can still put out an amazing album! “idea of you” and “Black & Blue Bird” are instant classics...If you asked me how I would compare this album to others, I would say it’s a combination of his solo album “Some Devil” and “Stand Up”... Great Music!!!

- Better than I hoped for!

Some funky stuff and some classic DMB. Love it!

- 5 STAR

GOTTA. LOVE. DAVE.

- DMB fan since 1994

As someone who has been to 25+ DMB shows and owns every single album I have to say this album is a disappointment. The best song on the album being Idea of You which has been around for years now. The rest of the music is kind of a snooze fest. If you're looking for an album like Crash this is NOT it. Sad to see the band in decline and now with Boyd Tinsley's departure I might just have to live on my memories of the past going forward.

- Yes! 20 year+ fan

My first ‘Dave’ concert was TAMPA 1998. Il be jamming to Come Tomorrow over and over this summer. Thank you Dave and crew for sticking in there, overcoming adversity, and leading with our love for music and each-other. ❤️🔥💃🏼❤️

- Well done

A beautiful record.

- FINALLY! An album worse than Big Whiskey!

Really wanted to like this one... but I can’t stand to listen to it. I thought Everyday sucked until they released Big Whiskey... which also sucked until they released this... try to tap your foot to a single song, I dare you. DMB is truly dead.

- Best Album!

One of my favorite Dave Matthews albums so far! My favorite song from the album is Come on Come on

- Elegant. Mature. Swan song?

I'll never forget seeing DMB for the first time in 1996 right after Crash came out. Ben Harper opened and came out to jam like hell on "All Along the Watchtower" to close the show. I was hooked. I lost count of how many times I'd seen them around 2004. Having not seen them since Big Whiskey came out, most of these tunes are new to me. Only songs I've heard at all are "Can't Stop" and "Idea of You." Overall, I think this may be the "prettiest" collection of songs they've ever done. Dave has matured as a songwriter, guitarist, and singer, and the focus is truly on him all through the record. To me, it feels like their last hurrah. Boyd is done and LeRoi is gone (though he made it onto the record). Many of the songs focus more on Dave specifically than they ever have before. I'm not sure if this is what happened or not, but it's almost as if they had a bunch of songs they'd recorded for other albums that they didn't want to go unreleased before they called it quits. I imagine Dave will always collaborate with Carter and Stefan, but it feels like this could be the swan song for DMB. If so, it was a beautiful run and this is a sweet note to end on.

- Best yet?

It’s a highly debatable subject, but could this album be in the conversation for best Dave Matthe s Band album? I say yes resoundingly and can’t stop listening to this album. It is music at its absolute best and Dave Matthews Band at their absolute best. What a gem and surprise of an album this one is. 10 stars

- Good evolution

I’ve been away from DMB for a handful of years....and this album launches me back in. Good stuff!

- This may be their best Album!!!!!

I am a fan from day 1 and was worried that they may have fallen off, but this album hit my happy ears. Thanks for bringing back the timeless melodic artistry and meaningful lyrics that originally had me fall in love with DMB😍

- Thank You!

I remember.

- #9 can’t wait for #10

Fantastic album. Happy to see the band has been able to continue to make new music while not doing the exact same album as they have done before. Come On Come On and Here On Out are great. Virginia In The Rain has a fun eerie feel. Again and Again is a ton of fun. None of the songs are overly long. That doesn’t mean we won’t eventually get a 10 min live version.

- Love it!

Dave’s vocals are amazing. It has been a challenging time for this group-glad to see a silver lining! ✌🏼❤️🐜
