"broken" is a song by the American indie pop band lovelytheband, released exclusively to Billboard on April 13, 2017. The song was later included on the band's debut album, "finding it hard to smile". This song details the joy of finding another person who is comfortable as their real self instead of always trying to put forth a filtered, best-life version of themselves. Love isn’t as its portrayed in the movies, in song and on social media. Real relationships are sometimes awkward. But the only way to find a true connection is to do away with the pretense, let your guard down and show who you really are. Collins: "That song came about actually before I even met these guys. It came about in the middle of 2016. I was in a pretty low swing of my life. Just was a very lost time for me. I was coming out of another project situation, so it was just like kinda like a heartbreaking time. I kinda like fell out of love with music for a little bit before that, and spent the year or so prior to that trying to find myself again. Stumbled my way back into the studio with a longtime collaborator of mine, and I was like, “hey, I gotta get back to work. I gotta get stuff going again.” We were hanging around all day, just like fumbling around chords and riffs and drumbeats and different stuff in the studio. Nothing was really clicking. And then, the last hour we were in the studio, he pulled up the beat that would be the beat behind Broken. You know, doom, DA doom doom DA DA. And then I started, that riff fell out doom dah, doom dah. And then I was like, oh, this is interesting. And then that melody just kinda started bonging out. And I was like looking through my phone and stuff because there’s where I have a lot of lyrics and whatever. That lyric had just been kinda there, and I’d seen it in my phone for the last couple years. And, I was like okay, maybe this I’ll find it’s way into something one day. And then I read it, and I was like, oh, this could work. “I like that you’re broken, broken like me …” And I was like “Oh, that’s great,” and then kinda stumbled through the chorus a little bit. Then the day ended. Literally came back a couple days later, and I was like, because every song I write, it happens every time, I hate it. I hate it with, like, a passion. I’m like, that’s not good, this is terrible. Then I’d listen a couple days later, I’m like, oh. It’s not that bad. And I’d go back in and then the rest of the song fell into place. Looking back on it, it was like, it started as like a storytelling thing of this person who meets another person who bond over their insecurities, and struggles in their life. But in reality, it was far more introspective for me." lovelytheband went on the Genius Verified series in December 2018 to explain the lyrics. The lead singer said this about the song: “The whole time I thought when I was writing the words and writing the lyrics, I thought that it was just a story that I was telling. About these two people that meet each other, that bond over their hardships and struggles and life. But looking back after that, and especially now, it’s very clear that it’s my brain telling my heart "You’re going through it right now”. It was like a very low swing in my life, one of the hardest times of my life and I luckily was able to find the other end of it.
