- Good and bad

The remaster is great. There's clarity to the high end and low end, and fantastic seperation. However, if you were hoping for Jason Newstead's bass to stand out like it does when you play the Guitar video game with Metallica's name on it, then you're in for a bit of disappointment. I'd rather have the video game versions, whether the bass was seperated for people playing it. Because it stands out beautifully. I like the versions on the internet that give Jason's instrument the importance it deserves (this coming from a drummer, btw; I've been drumming since 1994). But even those versions don't have the remastered sound for newer and more dynamic sounding stereo systems. And for those who said it doesn't sound any different than the original ... get yourself a high end BOSE, or some Shure IEMs, or a nice set of cans for your ears (any brand, so long as they're dynamic and designed for listening to things in studios), or sit in front of a pair of studio monitors. Studio monitors are the only thing that seperates the bass guitar enough that you can hear that it's there. Else, on just about anything else, (multi-driver Shure IEMs, for example), you mostly just hear low end on James' guitar. The songs really impress with the YouTube versions that depict Jason's bass brought to the front. There's more depth and resonence, and for the first time in history, I wanted to listen to the album more than once or twice. I started listening to the entire album a few times a day for about a week. It was sonically wider, more powerful, and it made the singles into magnum opus pieces. I don't care WHY Metallica asked their people to use a minimal amount of bass. Maybe it was part of the grieving for Cliff, and that's okay. I'm not upset. It's just that they had the chance to make it right with this reissue, and they didn't. I'll have to keep listening to the old flat repair job that I found online. I was looking forward to buying this (since I have all the other remasters so far), and I am REALLY REALLY REALLY looking forward to the black album's remaster. But I'm skipping this one, after listening to all the clips, and after listening to the entirity of this on YouTube. Sorry, Metallica. Not this one. Don't worry, I'll BUY this album, and then listen to the repaired internet version, but I won't listen to it as you guys intended it. I'll listen to it as the sound guy would have wanted to mix it. He's the sound professional. Not me, not you.

Raw energy & emotion deserves a lot of praise!

- Finally Listenable!

An all-time great metal album, but plagued by horrible sound quality. It now sounds great, and is (finally) a pleasure to listen to. About time!

- Should’ve kept both on here

I hate when they remove the old album to make room for the remastered version. 900+ reviews gone
