Samo by Vince Staples Song Info
“SAMO” is the ninth track off of Big Fish Theory. The title is most likely a reference to a graffiti tag developed by renowned artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and his friend Al Diaz. According to Basquiat, the name originated from a stoned conversation with Diaz, in which they called the marijuana that they smoked the “same old shit”. The theme of the song also plays to comments Vince recently made in an interview with LA Weekly: "If a photographer took the same picture over and over again, you’d call them crazy, right? If an architect built the same house, if a designer made the same clothes, if a painter made the same painting—we’d all discredit them,” Vince explains. “Then why do we expect musicians, and rappers specifically, to do the same thing over and over and over? It’s because they do not look at rap music as art. They like to say the word, but they’re not really holding anything to those standards.” In a video of him touring Long Beach Vince says that he wouldn’t have done music without guys named Dijon Samo and Chuck Wun– the song title could also be a shout out to Samo.
