Carpenters & Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - Ticket To Ride

Ticket To Ride by Carpenters & Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Song Info

"Ticket to Ride" is the debut single released by Carpenters on November 5, 1969. It is a cover of The Beatles' song, written by Lennon–McCartney. Richard Carpenter recalled: "I happened to hear [the song] being played as an oldie one day in early 1969, and upon hearing it this particular time, decided the tune would make a nice ballad." As arranged by Richard Carpenter, the song became the plaint of a castoff lover, with the opening line: "I think I'm gonna be sad", being sung repeatedly as the track fades. "Ticket to Ride" became the Carpenters' first charting song, peaking at number 54 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1970, reaching number 19 on the same magazine's Adult Contemporary chart, and number 24 on the Canadian AC chart in February. The single's success led to its parent album, their debut "Offering", being reissued as "Ticket to Ride". The music video was filmed to recall Beatles film "Help" (1965), were the song was first introduced. The shot took place in Squaw Valley, California, on Karen's 20th birthday. Richard mentioned they both had a lot of fun filming, even thought the temperature was very cold. In 1973, "Ticket to Ride" was re-recorded for their first compilation The Singles 1969-1973. In 1974, the Carpenters sibilings got to met Paul McCartney, who invitated them to watch the recording of Mike McGear's album at 10cc’s Strawberry Studios. McCartney complimented them and Karen's singing. In a 1977 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, McCartney praised Karen Carpenter's vocal abilities and referred to the Carpenters as "really good."

- First 3 songs...

I have always loved the Carpenters music. I have all their regular albums and several of their compilation albums. I'm trying my best to hear something new in the instrumentals but I don't hear anything that would make me want to purchase this collection. Over the years they have released updated versions of their songs on the compilation albums. This one just doesn't scream "BUY ME...I have something new to offer.". I agree with other comments, it would be nice to have new music from Richard...or music they recorded but didn't use on any of their albums.

- From the Snippets

"Ticket to Ride" sounded more orchestral than "Yesterday Once More", but I will wait for the entire album to decide. Would have liked to see "A Song for You" included. But always happy to see anything new. Overall, I think this is a great idea and looking forward.

- CARPENTERS GREATEST GROUP EVER !

THE CARPENTERS AND ESPECIALLY KAREN CARPENTERS VOICE ARE HEAVEN SCENT SHE IS THE BEST VOCALIST OF ALL TIME. THIS ALBUM USES THE BEST TECHNOLOGY TO ADD HER VOCALS TO THE ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA IN 2018.

- The Carpenters And The Royal Philharmonic

I had my doubts about this release because of the gapless presentation. Don't let that stop you from purchasing this album. From what I can hear, only Tracks 3 & 10 are affected when you start playing them. They pick up the ends of tracks 2 & 9 respectively. The songs sound great and are much clearer and less bass heavy than their previous releases. I thought to myself, what more orchestration could be added to improve the originals? Give a listen and you'll hear the difference. Get this compilation! Also check out the other Artists in this series. Elvis, The Beach Boys, Roy Orbison and who could ever forget Aretha Franklin!

- Carpenters & Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

I pre-purchased this album, however, both of the songs that were downloaded immediately, Yesterday Once More & Merry Christmas Darling, cut off before the end of the song. Very annoying. Will this be corrected?

- Nice

Any album that features Karen Carpenter is wonderful, but I really don’t hear much of a difference in these new arrangements. It’s still Karen Carpenter though.

- Will Buy...

Will buy this recording, largely for nostalgia. As someone else has already mentioned though, would love to hear new Richard music. Where's the Christmas album that has been teased for years? I heard a radio internview where Richard stated that he had retired. I can only think that A&M/Universal did not think that his new music would be profitable...If that's true, I disagree. I would SO BUY Richard's compositions with guest vocalists. Yes, it's not Karen. Yes, we all love Karen. But how many times can I hear Close To You And We've Only Just Begun? There is an audience for Richard Carpenter. He is our connection to Karen and, I believe, he likely has more to contribute. Come on folks. None of us is getting any younger!

- Love Them!

Love them and I’m excited for this album. ❤️

- Very nice

Pre-ordered and can’t wait till the release of the entire album. I’m sure it will be perfection. That said, with the advances in all things electronic, why can’t Richard do something with all the songs that are floating around on the Internet from specials, TV shows, etc? It would be great to hear them remastered.
