Foo Fighters - Making A Fire

Making A Fire by Foo Fighters Song Info

Making a Fire is a song by rock band Foo Fighters, the opening track of their 2021 album Medicine at Midnight. It was the fourth single for the album, releasing as a single on June 8th, 2021. It was Foo Fighers' 11th song to reach #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. It also reached #1 on the Billboard Canada Rock, US Rock Airplay, and OCC UK Rock & Metal charts. The song features female vocalists during the chorus, one of which being Dave Grohl's daughter Violet. A re-recorded version of the song produced by Mark Ronson was released as on June 25th, 2021. This version featured musicians from different bands, such as the Budos Band, Antibalas, and the Tedeschi Trucks Band. Musially, the song is much more poppy and upbeat than most Foo Fighters songs have been in the past, true for most of Medicine at Midnight.Speaking on the BBC Radio 6 Music Show, Dave Grohl says "We felt like that was the perfect place to start. The groove in that song, it's almost like a DJ sort of breakbeat. We had touched on something we hadn't necessarily done before." The song won the 2022 Grammy for Best Rock Performance. Making a Fire is featured on the Foo Fighters' cover/live album Hail Satin. The song was included in the soundtrack for the baseball video game MLB The Show 21, released on April 20th, 2021.

- WEAK SAUCE

Coldplay, Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox 20 ?????

- Dad rock at its finest

Well its great for dad rock, but don’t expect old style Foo Fighters.

- Wow!

Just sad really. After listening to this garbage I immediately went back and heard Everlong, The Pretenders and Breakout just to name a few

- It’s ok

Not my favorite!

- Relax people , this still rocks.

This sounds like Dave remaining true to his Prince and Led Zeppelin influence. It's nothing that out of context to he's been doing for the last 30 years. Just slammin beats and hooks. Happy to hear the band break out of the "Foo fighters box" like Zeppelin had to break out of theirs regularly, but not at the expense of the groove.

- Awful - dump the keyboards

Wasting light was the last rock album these guys put out. the record just straight up stinks!

- Bleh

Yawn

- Bland

Not this one.

- why?

Compete Garbage.

- So Much Better Than I Expected, Don't Sleep On This.

I've been getting concerned with the Foo (my favorite band) for awhile and have approached this album caustiously. I knew I'd get the album regardless cuz I'm such a sucker for the Foo Fighters, but I was completely blown away by how good this album was as a whole piece. They definetely harken back to some of their older songs with like Waiting On a War feeling like But Honestly, Chasing Birds feeling like a track from Colour and Shape era, Love Dies Young has that quintessential Foo Fighters album closer sound that reminds me of New Way Home or End Over End or Walk. Shame Shame definetely brings the David Bowie vibe which is a new element to the Foo sound which took a lot of warming up to but in the end enjoyable. No Son of Mine is like a classic rock radio rocker with the ferocity that we all know and love about the Foo Fighters. But the thing that this album has most importantly is the quintessential Foo Fighters sound, maybe not the same guitar textures or simplistic arrangments in years past, but in the melodies themselves... they all sound like Foo Fighters songs.

- I like it

Reminds me of some of Dave’s very early stuff...at least had that vibe to me! 🤷‍♂️☘️

- The Foo does it again!

Great new album! They were going for a pop sound, but it definitely has a rock edge - I mean it's the Foo Fighters. I loved all the songs but my favorite is probably "No Son of Mine." Another awesome album from Foo Fighters and definitely worth a listen!

- What a disappointment

The Foo Fighters used to be so good and fast paced and their music felt powerful, now this is just pop rocks. Not cool Foo Fighters. And kwoo I don’t care, the Foo Fighters are meant to be grunge.

- Solid album

A very good album, only one song that didn’t catch my ear. The lead track is a great song and in my opinion should have been the first single. Glad that they released something.

- Awful,Awful,Awful

Can I please get a refund. This sounds like computer pop mixed with techno. No thanks Foos.Get back to Wasting Light rock and maybe I’ll listen. This is absolute gerbage.

- Pleasantly Surprised

I am a very big Foo Fighters fan, and I have to admit I didn’t particularly care for Concrete and Gold. It had some great songs, but overall I felt roughly half of the music was throw away. Medicine at Midnight is far better. It has a great dynamic to it that previous Foo releases lacked. It sounds like they had a great time recording it. I really feel that 8 out of the 9 tracks are keepers. Highly recommend to anyone on the fence about this to give it a few listens and it will quickly grow on you.

- Overhyped Foo Fighters.

My friend who is a big Foo Fighters fan bought this cd and I listened to it in it’s entirety and quite frankly nothing really impressed me. I have one Foo Fighters cd from way back when and never bought another. This in my opinion is the most overrated band I’ve ever heard. And Dave Grohl is not a great guitar player nor singer but I’ll give credit where do, he was a good drummer in Nirvana who was a far better band. Two stars for this latest and that’s being generous.

- Yo pls come to king villa this is a great place to preform you have so many fans

You the boss

- Good

Good luck

- Can’t Base Rating Off ONE Track!

It’s pretty hilarious that people start bagging and bashing on an upcoming album just from hearing 1 song so far. This track sounds way different but I honestly love that it has an 80s retro vibe to it, yet also showcases the multi talent of Grohl and the guys’ writing ability, plus you still hear that original FOO when Dave starts to belt out his vocals. At least it’s not your typical auto tuned pop run of the mill over saturated genre that we hear sooooo much of today, or excess hip-hop with the “bragging” or dirty lyrical themes! I’m excited to hear more of this album and the talented onslaught the guys bring within it! God Bless you all :) ***now that the album is officially out, it’s absolutely killer 🤘 FOO always slays!

- Shifflett is all over this and I love it

Really fun album to listen to and DG’s voice sounds much better than the last album. I suppose not touring for a year will allow that!

- Shame Shame

As a Foos fan I say shame shame on this album.

- Great Album

The Foo Fighters have some strange fans as I think this is a great album. Music is totally subjective, so I understand why some don’t like the album as it represents a bit of a stylistic shift, but the signature core Foo Fighters sound remains on each song. After each listening, I like the album more and more. Bravo Foo Fighters.

- Not remotely good

FF's have gone down rather badly since Wasting Light, their last good full album. Sonic had good songs, but was a poor overall album, C&G had maybe 2 good songs and was a poor overall album, and M@M is just plain bad. Lose the keyboardist, Dave, your music has sucked since you brought him on full time.

- roosterrn

wow, guess dave wanted to try something different. different isn't always better

- Pretty good

Was skeptical at first, but holding poison, making a fire, cloudspotter are so good! Feels similar to wasting light.

- Never disappoints

A little weird at first but trust he knows what he’s doing

- A Bit of Foo Disappointment

Being a huge Foo Fighter fan and coming off the last album Concrete & Gold (which not one of their best efforts) I was looking forward to getting back to their sound they are known for. Wasted Light was what I was hoping for but we got this departure to "Pop Rock". Look I understand when bands want to branch out and do new stuff, but it just doesn't work for me at all. Anyhow, Dave and company, get back to your roots, and do what you guys have done best for so many years.

- Foo Fighters

You guys are cool

- Fun

This album is what Grohl said it would be, a party album. It's fun, it's pop, it's written and performed well. Shut up.

- Funky, Groovy, Sexy

This is excellent, particularly Medicine At Midnight, Cloudspotter, Holding Poison, Shame Shame... There’s a groove that’s different than other Foo records, and that’s ok, it’s great! I’ve been a fan from the start and FF did not disappoint. There are great lyrics in here and I can’t wait to hear them live.

- Good album!

I like the new album, not the single. Good stuff!

- 10/10

I see what the Foos were trying to do with this album. After listening to this album a couple times through I have really grown to love this album. I think this album is FANTASTIC!!!!

- You’d be foo-lish not to like this record!!!!

A great album that has all the foos signature licks. The new direction songs like shame and medicine at midnight are great songs that are needed on the record.

- Meh

It’s not that good.

- Cloudspotter best

Most peeps prematurely put reviews like silly Williams

- Not Rock

This Album is not good, there is no Rock in this at all. It’s more Techno style than Rock.

- FANTASTIC!

This is great music by a great band. I’m glad they have the courage to do what they want to do and still make great music!

- YUK!

After Wasting Light I suppose there is nowhere to go but down? I really miss that kind of production & sound. This stuff is just too Bubble Gum. Like what happened to Tesla.

- Good for What ‘Ails Ya

Drums sound incredible on this album. Great to see Dave back at it. 🙂👍🏻

- Excellent

Open your mind. Don’t let genres and “what they should sound like” influence you. This is still a Foo record. It’s fantastic in so many ways. Really well done. Zero complaints. Solid front to back.

- A Theme, 3 ALBUMS IN A ROW

Soooo.... ive come to the conclusion of a couple things with the FOO’s.. 1. They heard loud and clear from others that most of their previous albums had the same exact sound .. some I couldn’t differentiate from one album to the next .. and they changed it up.. 2. My guess is Wasted Light “which is tied as a favorite with Color and the shape” was a crescendo for the same and same RAWK the Foos gave us from 95-2011.. sounds like they experienced the same thing that Pearl Jam did when working with Neil Young.. and were so inspired they stuck to that blended sound of Neils indie rock with their own.. when Foo Fighters came out with Sonic Highways .. they worked with so many of their influences It stuck .. carrying that sound with Concrete and Gold.. and now Medicine at Midnight! I don’t mind this at all.. I actually like Midnight more than the previous two albums.. but honestly .. Now I’m ready to go back to WASTED LIGHT AND Echos , Silence and Grace please lol.. with a couple concrete , Sonic HWY, and Midnight influences as well. This album is short and sweet .. Took me 3 listens to really stick as a whole .. and it’s a 1-9 listen.. not a “put on random” .. doesn’t flow right on random ! That is all!!

- Not their best but...

I like it. Go back and read what they were trying to accomplish with this album. They did what they set out to do. It’a a great mixture of pop, rock, funk and R&B. But, it still has that FF’s sound. The more I listen the more I dig it!

- True Artist

Longevity in music is done thru experimentation.....examples: Stones, Zep, Beatles. And thats what Dave and the boys have done. Not sayin' they're on the same level, but WELL DONE! Liked all the songs from the first listen and found myself wanting to re-listen the next day!

- Mad song

One of my favorite songs you should listen to it for sure

- I Changed My Mind

In hearing only one be song from this album, I was initially skeptical that I would like the rest of it and wasn’t expecting much when I began to listen to “Medicine at Midnight” in its entirety. Well...was I ever wrong. This album is fantastic! Some songs are very different that what I am used to hearing from the Foo Fighters, but different in a good way! And then there are other songs that sound like traditional Foo, which I love! It was a great combination of sounds, rhythms and lyrics that I was pleasantly surprised by. I definitely changed my mind about this album and will be downloading and enjoying it today!

- Not Feeling It

Love Foo Fighters - DOnt love this album

- Punk Pop

Dave and Foos congrats on a brilliant LP. I think you have finally got to your ‘nirvana’ blend of Black Flag and ABBA. Congrats.

- I’m dancin’

I love how the Foo Fighters are always changing it up! It’s their 25th year so why not celebrate with some rockin tunes that will get you moving! I love every song and I’m sure they put in “Chasing Birds” to slow it down a bit & keep me from keeling over. Favorite tune in the album is “Love Dies Young”....but it’s so hard to pick just one as they honestly are all great!

- Great album!

Sounds like some of there older stuff.
