The Shining by The Neighbourhood Song Info
"The Shining" is likely in reference to Jesse’s relationship with Devon Carlson. It’s not secret that Jesse is deeply in love with her and that he’s trying to live up to be someone worthy of her love and affection. He feels she naturally has a “heart of gold,” which is defined as having a kind and generous disposition. He doesn’t want her to be “all alone” in the sense that he feels she deserves someone who is just as loving, pure, and kind as she is. He’s letting her know that he’ll continue to earn her love. These lyrics really work to define Jesse’s alter ego Chip Chrome, a chrome-coloured alien. To match his partner’s bold and glamorous persona, Jesse paints himself chrome. Jesse has explicitly stated how being with Devon can be somewhat difficult due to his insecurities and constant need of validation. "You’re too pretty for me Baby, I know, it’s true, yeah" He sometimes feels outshined by his girlfriend and often finds himself comparing himself to her. Jesse feels undeserving of her and doubts himself when he thinks of her unique perfection, but reminds himself that she chose him for a reason. “You’re so down to Mars” is a playful twist on the phrase “down to Earth.” He puts her on a level that is among the stars, but appreciates how genuine and “down to Earth” her love is for him. The song loosely samples part of Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" in the instrumental.
