Twenty one pilots - The Outside

The Outside by Twenty one pilots Song Info

“The Outside” expresses frontman Tyler Joseph’s criticisms toward the music industry as a whole, commentary on the monotony of mainstream music, and his reservations that what is considered mainstream will replace twenty one pilots. Tyler uses a variety of metaphors (e.g. a Megalodon and Megatron) to express a sense that the band was once a leader in their music due to their success during the Blurryface era when many of their songs topped the charts, but now that time has passed and the Megalodon faces extinction as well as Megatron watching the cogs he once stepped on rising up. “The Outside” expresses the inevitability of how the music industry moves on from one artist to the next and highlights Tyler’s bitterness towards the industry and how it prioritizes non-controversial, non-challenging music. This is not the first time Tyler has been bold in declaring his criticisms. On twenty one pilots 2011 hit “Holding On To You,” he wrote: "Lean with it, rock with it, when we gonna stop with it? Lyrics that mean nothin', we were gifted with thought." And on 2015’s “Lane Boy” he says: "Don’t trust a perfect person and don’t trust a song that’s flawless." Tyler has always been at odds with music that is thoughtless, but “The Outside” sees him tired of having this argument and even accepting that if twenty one pilots can’t be mainstream, they will still make music from the outside. Additionally, listeners can read “The Outside” as a confrontation with Dema and their control over Tyler’s character and his music. The “The Outside” made its live debut on May 26, 2021 as part of The Livestream Experience, the same day the studio version was released as part of "Scaled And Icy". While this performance has not been officially shared post-stream, its audio was remastered and released as part of the "Scaled And Icy (Livestream Version)" album. It was later performed for the Corona Capital Festival at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City on November 21, 2021. The performance video was released later on December 16. A tweet promoting the performance video also teased that a music video would be filmed after the year-end holidays.

Twenty one pilots killing it again with a sick as frick album 🙌🏽

- Amazing

This is a beutifal sounding album and I absolutely loved it

- IOVE IT

I LOVE THE ALBUM MY FAV SONG IS SATURDAY

- No good

It really bad that I think my dog could do better

- Very bad!!

The song on this album sound nothing like but not in a good way.

- Got too cute with this

So they went in a completely different direction with trench using a sound that was so different compared to all their previous, highly successful albums... and it worked.. then came this trash... they tried doing a totally different sound then all their albums and the exact opposite of trench. Sounds like a wannabe jamiroqui.. so far off base from what made these guys successful. Can’t wait for them to your again but hope they leave this entire album of the set list

- Don’t let Dema win...

Don’t listen to the vapid “I use to love them” reviewers. This album is more upbeat than Trench, and that’s largely because Tyler is in a better place in his personal life. He’s happily married with a beautiful kid. No one should stay hardcore emo forever. As some other reviewers have mentioned, the livestream concert did a fabulous job of presenting these new songs and meshing them with previous albums. If it’s time for you to part ways with TOP because they’ve found some bliss, Dema wishes you well.

- Can’t stop listening

This does not sound like dumb lisztomania by Phoenix

- Absolutely amazing

Please don’t write a review until you let this album play multiple times. At first I was disappointed. Played it again and liked a few songs. Played it again and love them all. They continue to make awesome music.

- Eh

There are some good songs but this album doesn’t sound like them. Blurryface was the best album they released so far.

This album is definitely worth purchasing.

- 👎

Worst album yet. No dought. Too poppy. Bring on Trench II

- Amazing!

This entire album is amazing. Redecorate, mulberry street and never take it are definitely my favorites! And for all of you haters, just STOP. TØP is always changing their style and if you don’t like it then its your fault for not liking whatever style it is. 🔱

- T∅P

Nice to know my kind will be on my side …hype!! CORONA is best beer

- TOP Charts Album ❤️

I absolutely LOVE this album and Twenty One Pilots! I’ve been listening to their music everyday for 9 years and it never gets old. ||-// 🔱🐆 East is up! I love Bounce Man, Mulberry Street, Formidable, Never take it, and basically all of it. Redecorate has a good message.

- SHUT UP HATERS😍❤️✨😘🤌🏾👏🏾

Omg yes I love this album. Redecorate and The Outside are bomb. Don’t listen to the haters this album is fantastic✨✨✨

- My 3rd fave tøp album of all time

My favorite album is Regional at Best, 2nd is Vessel, Scaled and Icy is a very close 3rd. Definitely get a lot of Regional at Best vibes of very upbeat music with very thoughtful lyrics. Honestly there are some major BOPS on this album and I am more than willing to put all of my stamps of approval on this album. Cannot wait to see one of their concerts and see them perform live.

- A new era!

Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!

- Its not the worst

I will say that I did not appreciate as much as their previous albums which contained more angsty and driving songs. But after a couple of listens it has grown on me but it still isn't perfect, and yes it is true that it is most albums aren’t perfect because it is very hard to achieve but my hopes were very high due to their previous album trench which was a musical masterpiece. Over all SAI is good but not good for TØP, just my opinion.

- Beast

This Album is fire!

- Yikes

I don’t even have the energy to describe how much of a let down this album is as a follow up to such a perfect work of art.

- I have a theory:

Clancy is ALIVE! I THINK So many people are just writing theories on here I wanted to join in 🙈

- On repeat

Cant get enough

- Such a good album

In my opinion it’s their best album! Redecorate is a work of art, and the rest are so upbeat, which is also important right now. I love how they really grow with each album.

- Good after a day or two

At first I hated this album but after a few listens I absolutely love it. Especially The Outside and Never take it.

- Inbetween good and GREAT

I love this album and I can listen to it all the way through, but it's missing what they had in their last 3 albums. Trench, Blurryface, and Vessal has poetry, meaning, storytelling and such RICH beats that fullfil my mind to this day. The stories are what I remember and relate to. Trench is by far the best, best best album of theirs. The Scaled and Icy album is fantastic. The beat in each song is very nice, the vibe is there, but it's missing what they poured into their past albums: A story of a war, a man, love, battles with the devil, battles with ones self. Stories of doubt, lonelyness, and much much more I can't even comprehend. It's beautiful, it's a story of stories that I love. Scaled and Icy is missing depth. It has more of a pop genre then the rock/rap/alternative before although it's scattered in this album. Good album this is, but GREAT album this is? It's inbetween. It's there. I love this album, they did a great job.

- Outstanding

Every song is great but Formidable is by far and away my favorite track on this album. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

- it’s ok

I mean I didn’t add any songs bc it’s just now the “top” I used to listen to back then with them screaming in my ears blaring it so everyone around me can hear it but I miss it when they wrote sad songs about dying and making me want to cry myself to sleep every single night

- No

Off-brand daft punk, or known as “Saturday,” made it very clear that this album was never to be taken seriously. If it were true that this album was meant to be something experimental and “for the fans,” then it wouldn’t be so heavily commercialized. The lyrics for every song are uninteresting, and sounds like anyone could have written them. The instrumentals could be better; they’re not the best quality, and the constant dissonance with the weird bass synths not lining with the drums, and second pair of synths, are annoying. I simply didn’t care for this album.

- Varying degrees of awful

It’s simple. Boring. Derivative.

- Amazing for what it is.

This album was purposely made, and it’s amazing from top to bottom. These guys are generational song writing talent, they can do no wrong.

- I don’t hate it

Been listening since 2013, Trench was my favorite album, by far. I have mixed feelings about this one.

- Your biggest fan 💯

I am your biggest fan I’ve been listening my whole life and I love everything you guys do. This album is for sure a 5 star in my opinion.

- Poggers

Poggers Poggers Poggers Poggers Poggers Poggers Poggers Poggers Poggers

- SAI IS PROPAGANDA

Don’t trust a song that’s flawless... Okay. So most people who are writing reviews for this album seem to either 1. Not have seen the livestream performance that accompanied this album and or 2. Not understood the deeper storyline here. THIS IS A SATYRICAL ALBUM. This album literally was announced through the DEMA ORG website in an incredibly cryptic way, there have been hidden messages like the fact the album name is an anagram for “Clancy Is Dead” (if you know Trench lore, you know who Clancy is) as well as standing for “Scaled Back and Isolated” which is a term Tyler coined for the pandemic. Also a hidden message in the image of their Christmas single that is a present in the background that says “SAI is propaganda - Clancy”. Yes it doesn’t ‘sound like them’ because it’s supposed to be Tyler and Josh through the brainwashed lense of DEMA. This is SUPPOSED to not sound like them. But this is still twenty one pilots. Here is why: At first listen, most of us would assume this is much more ‘bubblegum pop happy’ than any of their other work - and indeed it’s meant to be taken that way at surface level, but listen to it closer. There is heart in here - the lyrics are actually very deep, touching on being happy to please others/conform to society standards and the existentialism of death (Good Day, Mulberry Street, Choker) as well as police brutality, the corruption of the government and the political divide (Never Take It, No Chances, Redecorate) to fast culture, deportation and racism (Bounce Man, The Outside). Redecorate on it’s own is a phenomenal song - I was incredibly impressed by this track, it shook me to my core. Tyler sings about 3 different people with 3 different stories but all the same pain of dying and leaving everything behind. The song is based on the idea of a parent losing a child and leaving their room exactly as it was - “keep it on display, or redecorate”. This song absolutely touches on classism and murder, I even take it as an LGBT song about wether to present yourself authentically or change in order to be safer. That is the fun thing about good art, you can make it into your own. No Chances may seem kind of cocky and surface level, but this song also speaks on police brutality and death. It’s a direct reference to the bishops of DEMA as well as the prison system. I think most of us probably would have listened to this body of work, not knowing the fact that there is a specific flavor to this album. We probably expected it to sound like Blurryface or Trench, we wanted Tyler to flat out be screaming about pain and depression. But this is still here, it’s just hidden. It’s woven into the pastel colored fabric of this work. You just gotta search for it. Plus lemme mention the fact that he (Tyler) as an artist has grown a lot over the years. He is a father now, so that means he is automatically writing with a different purpose than his younger self. Tyler is still here, and he is still feeling and struggling and contemplating existence as he always is, it’s just in a different way than we are used to hearing from him. It’s perhaps the most complex he has ever spoken about these issues. If Blurryface was writing about hard topics from a character and Trench was an expansion of that character into a full environment about being oppressed and controlled by government (as well as the mind/thoughts) then Scaled and Icy is retelling that story the way the actual government wants you to hear it. It’s genius - to create a fictitious world that mirrors our own in order to address and speak on real life issues. Think of George Orwell’s 1984 or the Truman Show. This is a post apocalyptic story here. The live performance - (which I highly recommend watching) tells a lot of this story. Tyler is in obvious discomfort/unease playing these new songs. They seem rather fake and forced, like something or someone is making him only play these new happy pop songs and cutting him off when he gets too emotional. Of course this isn’t the case, he is playing a character as he often does. This is still Tyler. I’ll be honest - These are my favorite musicians and at first listen I was a little confused by how different everything about this album sounded. Then I relistened along with lyrics and watched the SAI live show and realized that everything I can expect from them is still there, you just gotta read between the lines. This album is actually incredibly brilliant. Tyler himself said - that there were two albums that could/would be made. One was darker and more align with Trench’s sound and direction and the other would be lighter, funner. The reason he worked on and released this album now is because he felt the world needed some brightness, some positivity, some imagination. This album is actually inspired by a blue dragon toy that was inside Tyler’s studio - he thought about this dragon toy growing and stretching it’s wings to fly around his room with him, this is what led to him basing this album off the idea of imagination and escapism, creating a brighter/happier environment than what is in the world right now. Let’s be honest, we could all use And again, hidden messages and cries of help are still there. The production is vastly different on here too due to the different producers working on it with Tyler and Josh, Tyler learned guitar for the album. There is a lot of maturity in the sounds. This album can be listened to and taken as really positive and happy, or it can actually be incredibly intense and sad. Either way it’s a whole spectrum of emotion. ~ Bravo my dudes, you’ve outdone yourselves again, even when I didn’t think it could be done. Don’t listen to the haters, only few will understand. And those who don’t understand, are just surface level fans. We get you, we hear you, we love you. Thank you for all you have done/continue to do with your artistry and hardwork. This album is nothing short of a masterpiece. Just listen again... And you’ll feel the saturation.

- Amazing

Such a good vibe with amazing messages

- Why does it have to sound like the old stuff?

Why does everyone get so mad that “It doesn’t sound like the old stuff?” Listen up people, every band needs change. Do you literally want them to give you the same music over and over again? That sounds kind of boring.

- Low key not loving the new direction

This doesn’t sound like a twenty one pilots album. It sounds like they’re performing someone else’s songs. Gone is the heart, soul, and passion, traded for off-the-shelf sounding milquetoast pop. They used to sound like a unique band but this new sound is all digital drums and synths. Is Josh even on the album? Shy Away and Saturday are the clear radio-friendly pop grooves. But Redecorate is the only song that feels authentic. All the other songs seem like lackluster album fillers. Is it just me?

- It all feels wrong

I bought the album with really high hopes as. I've been with TOP since self titled, and they've never released an album I didn't like until now. The songs don't have any meaning to them anymore. It's disappointing to say the least. I'm hoping their next album is better

- Change is great!!

When I first came across TOP, I listened to vessel and it was amazing. And when I listened to trench and blurryface, I was still amazed by the uniqueness. But did not find what I found in vessel. SAI is like the godlike reincarnation of vessel and got listening to the same songs over and over. People do not like it because it is happy and different than trench. Don’t get me wrong, I love trench as much as any TOP fan. I just loved the happiness from SAI. Favorites are The Outside, Choker, and Redecorate.

- By Far Their Weakest Album

This album is incredibly boring and lacks any of the charm all of their previous albums had. They’re one of my favorite bands and this was a huge letdown when the singles they released were actually good. It’s all of the other songs on the album that are lacking creativity and has cringe lyrics with no depth.

- Good

At first didn't like it because it just wasn't twenty one pilots like, but then a few days later, I couldn't get it out of my head. Regardless of the storyline, the album is still good, just happy tøp released some music. I would recommend for people that aren't used to twenty one pilots.

- Amazing

Don’t know why everyone’s mad it’s amazing

- its a grower

wasnt too sure about it at first and didnt enjoy the new direction too much, but it really grew on me! artists are allowed to change their sound, so im not sure why everyones so upset about it.

- Not what was expected but amazing!

Certain people will be disappointed with this album if they were expecting more of Trench. New approach, varied style, deep lyrics, songs that meet people in a variety of places in their life. All of that is still there. It’s a great summertime vibe. Tyler is a musical genius and won’t be kept in a box.

- I LOVE THE NEW ALBUM

This is such a good album it just makes me relaxed and I feel free when I leasen to the music in the aulbum.

- Not This One, Not for Me 👎🏼

Have been a fan for a while, love all previous albums, but this one sounds too forced, lyrics and beats not like before. Not for me.

- Ok

Not like they used to be its not that good

- Amazing!!

Amazing storyline, Great music, these guys go beyond what any artist does anymore

- scaled and icy

different from past albums and was unsure how to feel about it at first but i’ve grown to love it!

- Garbage

This new stuff stinks

- Honestly Disappointed.....

When ‘Shy Away’ came out, I didn’t like it that much and was worried about the rest of the album sounding the same. I unfortunately was right. This album is such a downgrade compared to ‘Trench’ and ‘Blurryface’. The only songs I actively listen to are ‘Redecorate’, ‘The Outside’, ‘Never Take It’, and ‘No Chances’. I don’t know if the pandemic had an effect on the album writing process, but I’m sad to say I really don’t like it.

- Disappointing

I’ve seen them in concert 4 times...that’s how much I love them. Unfortunately, this album I found to be very disappointing :(

- Obv great

Everything they create is wonderful, so I'm not surprised with this. I love how their sound evolves, yet I can hear their older albums in these songs. Sometimes I think "oh, there's Vessel, and that's Blurryface and Trench." The lyrics, music, and vocals never ever disappoint. I'm particularly a fan of The Outside, but all of these songs have been stuck in my head.
