Journey - Only the Young

Only the Young by Journey Song Info

Only the Young" is a song recorded by the American rock band Journey in 1983. Previously intended for the Frontiers album, it was pulled from the album within days of recording in favor of songs "Back Talk" and "Troubled Child". The song was eventually released as a single (which reached #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in March 1985) and appeared on the soundtrack for the 1985 film Vision Quest. The song's lyrical theme focuses on young people and the hope and future they all have in front of them. The song's first live performance was for a young boy named Kenny Sykaluk who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. His mother wrote a letter to the band telling them about her son's terminal condition, and how big a fan he was of Journey. The band flew to his hospital bedside at the request of the Make a Wish Foundation. Along with a Walkman containing the new track, the band also brought Kenny a football helmet signed by the San Francisco 49ers and an autographed Journey platinum record award. The experience of playing the song for Kenny left Steve Perry and Jonathan Cain deeply affected. Perry said "As soon as I walked out of the hospital room I lost it". Perry also says "The nurses had to take me out of the room". On VH1's Behind the Music featuring the band, Cain broke down in tears recalling the event, remarking that "children should not have to live with that kind of pain". Kenny died the next day, with the Walkman still in his hand. The song brought life into perspective for the band and left them humbled. Neal Schon said that Kenny's death affected Journey by making them re-evaluate the issues that were causing friction inside the band itself. In honor of Kenny Sykaluk, the band used the song as their opener for the Raised on Radio Tour. The song was also recorded by American rock band Scandal in 1984. The song was featured on their album The Warrior.

- A Definite Must!!!

This double-disc compilation is, without a doubt, the best Journey compilation out there. Almost every song is a must, and when you can purchase all 32 tracks for just 20 dollars, why hesitate? That's like getting twelve greats for free! The first disc is basically a slightly expanded version of their outstanding Greatest Hits CD. On this disc, you'll find almost every song from their Greatest Hits album, along with two other good songs ("When You Love a Woman" and "After the Fall"). Although my favorites from this disc are "Only the Young," "Don't Stop Believin'," "Faithfully," "Any Way You Want It," "Ask the Lonely," "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)," "Girl Can't Help It," and "Send Her My Love," every track on this disc is a must. The second disc contains a number of huge hits, mixed with great, lesser-known songs. My favorites here are "Chain Reaction," "Line of Fire," "Stone In Love," "Be Good to Yourself," "Still They Ride," and "Escape." But, once again, they are all great. Don't even hesitate to press the "Buy Album" button for this one. The only real exception would be if you are like me and already own their Greatest Hits disc. In that case, just get the best ones not covered on their Greatest Hits, and that should do the trick. If you're new to the band and are hesitant about spending twenty dollars on them, go for their Greatest Hits, and then come back here and to their core albums if (or should I say "when?") you want more. There are a few minor hits (such as "Where Were You," "Keep on Runnin'," and "City of the Angels") that aren't covered on this collection, but this does an outstanding job of capturing the band's very best. In summary, if you're looking for a thorough and definitive collection of Journey's greats without having to sort through heaps of filler, definitely look no further than "The Essential Journey." This collection really lives up to its name. Hope this was helpful, and happy listening =)

- ok this is why i wish i wasn't born in 1993

as you can see by my title...i really really wish i had been around when they were huge. but i'm not. so i get them through CD!!!!!!! i got this two disc album for my 13th birthday (hahaha...i also got tom petty & the heartbreakers greatest hits...hahaha) but anyway this is the second best album ever!!!!!!!!! second only to fleetwood mac's "the dance." yea i'm thinking that you should buy this whole thing...or at least the greats like "don't stop believin'" "any way you want it" "lights" and "open arms"<3<3<3<3<3

- I LOVE JOURNEY

Journey is one of my all-time favorite bands and this was the cd that introduced me to them, I had heard a couple of their songs on the radio and thought they were a pretty good band so when I saw this CD in the store I went a head and bought it. It is probably one of the best cd purchases I have ever made. So if you are looking for a great cd than look no farther cause you've found it!

- Definitily Essential...

This is arguably one of the better put together "Best of..." compilations in recent memory. It is a great mix of all their early stuff leading to thier creative high points of the early 80's. It gives you a glimpse into how great this band was and how tight a set they delivered in concert. This really does flow much like one of thier concerts. Neil Schon was great guitarist and provided a nice counterpunch to Steve Perry's melodic vocals and the lyrics were perfect for thier collective talents. It is a must have for any Journey fan and if you enjoyed 80's Rock then this is a great trip down memory lane. I highly recommend it

- Not All Essential

Great group. Great songs. I've given this album 4 stars because it lacks the top 40 hits, Walks Like A Lady and Suzanne which peaked at numbers 32 & 17 respectively on Billboard. Other than those 2 omissions all their top 40 hits are here.

- The classics will live forever!

I have always listened to Classic rock. I have Loved Journey since the 80's. I got hooked after listening to wheel in the sky on the radio in '83. The only other band that I prefer to Journey is The Jimi Hendrix Experience. This album I a must have for a Journey Devotee. If you Cant get the whole thing than get Don't Stop Believin, Wheel In The Sky, Any Way You Want It, Lights, Faithfully And Open Arms.

- JOURNEY BEST CD EVER

I LOVE JOURNEY I LOVE EVERY SONG TO BAD HE LEFT THE BAND THERE WILL NEVER BE JOURNEY WITHOUT STEVE PERRY

- This cd is ok

it had all of journeys greatest hit but also some of their worst songs it was just to big they should of kept it down to the first cd

- All the best in one place!

As a hardcore Journey fan, I own all of their vinyl, CDs, etc...but this is the CD I go to time and time again. It has all of their best hits in one place. This is a must have for all Journey fans.
