- BLOOD MOUNTAIN IS MASTODON'S PEAK

While most extremely heavy metal bands all sound bland and grating, Mastodon has always stood above the rest with amazingly catchy tunes, brillaintly played instruments, and a plethora of amazing guest stars. "Blood Mountain" is Mastodon's "Master Of Puppets," the group's first two records were amazing but this one tops them all. Right from the opening blast of "The Wolf Is Lose" to the closing thanks from Queens Of The Stone Age and Kyuss guitarist Josh Homme. This is pure metal bliss right here, I feel we can only expect more amazing metal from this band in the future. This record is easily a contender for the best metal album of the decade so far.

- Unbelievably dynamic

There's not a bad song on here. Completely top notch. This is the best that metal can be.

- Album of the year, at least for me.

For me this is the album of the year. So, so, so, so right on time. They have outdone themselves. I was happy to pay 16 bucks for the hard copy, cool dvd too. Thank You Mastodon for rocking so fing hard.

- BOW TO THE NEW METAL MASTERS!

it has taken a while, but metal is finally back. blood mountain should be the record of the year. hands down. metal, and alternative music is so full of bands that sound the same only with different riffs, that it is refreshing to hear something completely original. 5 stars isn't enough. i'd put this album alongside master of puppets as a new benchmark in metal.

- Prog gods

amazing progressive albumb. wish i could have hiven it 6 stars. From a technical stand point this albumb rains king.

- ALBUM OF THE YEAR!

Mastodon have outdone themselves. Being a fan since the Remission days, it's so nice to see them progress into more that a typical "one-dimensional" metal band. Blood Mountain is the best album to come out this year easily eclipsing Tool and their mediocre 10,000 Days disc. GET THIS ALBUM NOW!

- Just plain Bad

With the acception of a few songs this entire album is terrible. Mastodon might as well become a hardcore band. The vocals switch horribly between semi-death growl to singing..... Terrible is the only way i can express this album. Thier old stuff was much better, buy Leventian not this.

- Aurally stunning

I'm a new fan of this band and this CD. My only complaint is that iTunes does'nt offer better kbps. Currently iTunes music is 128kbps which is good for some people, but not this CD or my personal taste.

- Love it!!!!

I cant't get enough of Mastodon. Apple please get the Wolf is Lose Music Video!

- Sick

Mastodon gets me pumped! With there oh so sick songs that get the blood flowing.

- The Evolution of Metal

I'll be honest, when I first listened to this album I really wasn't sure if I loved it or if it was just another album. Since this was the first Mastodon album I had listened to, the unconventional guitar riffs, ever-changing tempos, ultra-heavy vocals and tolkien-esque lyrics caught me by surprise. However, after a few listens, I was just completely overwhelmed by just how pure metal Mastodon is. Every song on this CD is explosive and amazing. I see Mastodon as a group forging the way in the evolution of heavy metal music and there is no end in sight for what this band can accomplish.

- Best metal album in some time

Album is fantastic, every song is excellent! Nice evolution in their sound by adding some new dimensions to their singing, and the song construction is great as usual. Check out "This Mortal Soil", and the hyperactive "Bladecatcher".

- THE CROSSING OF THE THRESHOLD!

My friend told me to check out Mastodon. Not knowing what to except, I looked for Blood Mountain. I found it and listened to it. It's frickin amazing. The drummer is a one-of-a-kind person. Great Riffs on this album. The Wolf Is Loose, Crystal Skull, Capillarian Crest, and Circle of Cysquatch are the best songs on this album

- Mastodon rocks.

Mastodon is thinking man's metal, and along with All That Remains is the only good band to come out of the new metal group... Mastodon transcends genres with Blood Mountain. I'm glad I bought it.

- This SHREDS!

An epic follow-up to Leviathan. An absolute classic!

- Excellent

i never really heard mastodon untill recently i saw the The Wolf Is Loose, and Colony of Birchman music videos and i was quite impressed. i am generally a progressive rock, and metal fan and to hear the mixture of the two was absolutely awsome. the only thing that did not completely win me over was the repetition of lead (guitar) parts. but still over all this album is defenately worth your time and money! (those who are musicians who write progressive or metal this album is for you! its a big influence for me, and i hope it helps you!)

- Niiice

I entered Blood Mountain a human being, I left a Mastodon fan. I had heard about Mastodon earlier, around the Leviathan era, but never really got into them. Blood Mountain did it for me. I went back and bought this album, and right off the bat comes this crazy fast drum (riff?) at the beginning of "The Wolf is Loose". I assumed that the rest of the songs wouldn't be so fantastical as the first track, with the exception of one or two singles (like some bands), but boy was I wrong. Crystal Skull didn't **** around. Once you hit 0:11 on that track, you know some **** is gonna go down. I wasn't a big fan of the third track, "Sleeping Giant" and thought that, "Okay, this album showed its stuff, that's it." Wrong again, Brain. The guitar riff at the beginning of both "Capillarian Crest" and "Circle of Cysquatch" were pretty amazing. By now I was very impressed, and I enjoyed the rest of the album without any worries. In conclusion, nearly every song is a "I feel like jumping off walls and kicking someone in the balls" kinda song. I strongly reccomend it. Thanks for reading this review.

- Best album of the year PERIOD

even if you don't like metal..... even if you don't like mastodon..... BEST FRIGGIN ALBUM OF THE YEAR- HANDS DOWN!!! Every album they put out gets better and better.

- Amazing Album

This is one of the best heavy metla albums i have ever heard. I have heard many CD's where every song sounds the same after a while, but this CD feels like every song is very different and unique. Ive got a good feeling we will be seeing Mastodon getting bigger every year and i believe they will be one of the main stage bands at Ozzfest in 2007. By the way, there song Colony of Birchmen got a nommination for an Emmy for best Metal Preformance. These guys are GODLIKE

- Absolutely Awesome

I had first heard Mastodon when I heard Blood and Thunder on the radio. Since then I was hooked, Leviathan was so epic sounding, I never thought they would top it. But Blood Mountain does just that. It's some of the heaviest stuff I've heard yet, as well as some of the most unique sounding riffs written. Definitely a great buy.

- Ahhh....Metal.

I thank the Rock Gods for Mastodon. It has been a long time since a band has come along where you know this music will be just as important 20 years from now, especially in Metal. If you are already a Mastodon fan you will love this, they have added more to their music and while aspects of the other records are not as much a highlight, there is still tons that is new.

- so amazing

This is great, I love how they grew a lot, no more screaming the balls of tactic (though it wasn't bad) it also tells the story better than leviathin. This is magical, its amazing and progressive, with great riffs to boost. Sleeping giant is awesome with that spacey reverberating solo. then you have a rcrystal skull, a track laced with massive riffs, and of course a song like circle of cysquatch, its just relentless. Colony of Birchmen is brilliant, heavy and haunting, then asiberian divivde, oh, pure genious! those were my favorite tracks, but the whole album rocks!

- So good

i just saw these guys last week and they were incredible...

- Mastodon softening up...but only a little bit.

Title says all. Mastodon's softening up a bit, but not as much as to ruin their sound, and what the band stands for. Buy "The Wolf is Loose". Underappreciated, but very, very, very good.

- Amazing!

This album is just too good, and I know my metal pretty well. Buy it now.

- Very nice. How much?

Amazing album, got it one day early(sept. 11) and have not been disappointed yet. Had a chance to see them live and it rocked! On to the album. very very good guitar work....troys bass and vocal skills have drastically improved from leviathan and the same goes to brent as well. Brann is still destroying on the drums and bill plays some killer leads. very good album. a must buy. i love this album dont get me wrong but i still think leviathan is the most brilliant album to ever be created.

- tHeY sHrEd!!!!!

amazing mastodon has done it again levathation is hard to follow up, but they did it. i am now actually proud to be from atlanta

- Badass

I haven't made it through this album yet, though I've had it for days. I just keep going back to The Wolf...it's too good, hail Mastodon.

- oh god, they're so f'in good!

I love these guys!! I don't even like Metal, that's the weird part. If anything I'm a Neil Young Folk-Rock guy, and I generally avoid metal but these guys just seem so far ahead of every other metal group that it's mind-boggling. They are a smart, talented, quasi-literate Hard-Azz band. And that is a rare thing in today's industry. This album's just as good if not better than Leviathan. That's saying a lot!

- The best of current music.

To classify Mastodon as metal is just silly. The are a great metal band, but they are also a great rock band. Blood Mountain is really an epic achievement. In my opinion it's their best album yet. It is surprisingly accessible to a wide audience, but it doesn't aleinate their long-time fans. I love the King Krimson-like jams. You can't buy an album better than this!!

- what the f...?

ummm...I'm not really a big fan, but i got this cd as a christmas present, and it turned out to be okay..ummm...yeah...not the best metal you can get, but not bad...not bad at all...

- Awesome

I just recently listened to Mastodon and i love them.Im a drummer and Brann Dailor is awesome any metal or just hard rock lover will love this album.now we just need Tool on Itunes.

- wow this album is godly

ive been waitin for this album for awhile and i gotta say ive seen no better album than this

- anything Mastodon

Blood Mountain is a fantastic album no matter how you slice it. I got into mastodon after hearing "March Of the Fire Ants" a few years ago. Granted, the raw, gritty, heaviness of Remission is gone somewhat on this album. Blood mountain is not as heavy as Remission or Leviathan. While Blood mountain isnt as heavy as their previous albums, it shows an amazing maturation of the band's style. For example, take a listen to "Capillarian Crest"....this is easily the most complex song muscially mastodon has ever written, and it is a highlight of the album. hands down though my favorite song on blood mountain is "sleeping giant". the guitar riffs in that song make me feel like iam floating through the air ( recommended listening for all you stoners out there). mastodon rules, can't wait to see them on their east coast tour.

- AMAZING!!!!

These guys are amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The album is great.Mastodon is by far my favorite band ever.I managed to catch these guys at the Unholy Alliance [best show i have EVER seen] and they are amazing live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!These guys can really play thier instruments, most notably Brann Dalior and Brent Hinds.Over all, great band, great musicianship, and great album.I reccomend The Wolf Is Loose,Crystal Skull, and Sleeping Giant.

- sheer bliss

this band is great, they have the ability to attract many people to thier not so popular genre. Almost every song on this album is incredible. you cant go wrong.

- New Masterpiece

This could very well be the greatest album that i see in my lifetime, or at least until their next album. From start to finish, it never lets up, and also adds new twists to this already amazingly talented 4-piece combo. Now, instead of only having Troy Sanders' growl and an occasional vocal from Brent Hinds, we have a more evenly distributed performance with Troy doing cleaner vocals and more layering of the two, as well as some memorable guests. If you come across this album buy it at least 3 times...maybe 4.

- Another smash album from Metal's Proggy Grandkids

I think this album is definately their most ambitious to date. They have kept their same signature form: twisty, melodic guitar lines, raucous rhythm on the bass and guitars, and some amazingly complex jazz drumming. They use these rules to once again tell the listener another tale. While Laviathan told the tale of Moby Dick in morbid reccess, this time the story is of their own ficticious Blood Mountain, a place where a dangerous, mystical, shape-shifting wolf begins its terror and a living, thinking forest terrorizes those who walk through it. Basically, they tell the story of a magical, living mountain full of terrors and surprises. I felt the sound on this album, though highly polished, definately fits the album. Much in the way that Leviathan had a watery sound to it all (through the mixers wonderful use of uni-vibe effects and rotating speaker emulators), Blood Mountain seems to have a more solidified sound than its predeccessor, making the album feel more solid, and rockier: the way it should be when telling the tales of a haunted mountain. If you're a fan of Metal, then I highly reccommend this album. If you're a fan of Prog rock, I highly reccommend this album. If you're a fan of intricate classically arranged music, I highly reccommend this album. Over all, I highly reccommend this album.

- Incredible Sounds, Metal or Not

Prior to Blood Mountain's release, I had only listened to a couple songs from Leviathan. It was pretty neat stuff, but it didn't interest me enough to buy the album. When I heard about the new album coming out, I knew it would be amazing considering Mastodon has gotten better with every album they've released so far. I then read a review from Rolling Stone that, in a nutshell, said it was amazing (they later rated it the 9th best album of the year). So I bought the album, listened through it once...then listened to it again. I was literally shocked after listening to this album it's that good. With that said, returning listeners of Mastodon, listeners of metal, or listeners that are just interested in venturing into something new, buy Blood Mountain, because it freakin' rocks!! First and foremost, Mastodon is pretty heavy stuff. Even though every popular music magazine has given it praise, that doesn't mean that it is easily accessible to all audiences. The band is full of very talented musicians, but the drummer is the main spectacle. This guy can seriously destroy the drums like no other. The other guys are pretty good; both guitars are amazing and the bassists, well, frankly he's just background for the most part. The singer has a pretty neat voice as well. At times it's ear-grinding, cookie monster singing that nobody likes, but most of the time it's pretty unusual (sounds cool but you can't really understand what he's saying). The album starts off with 'The Wolf is Loose', a fast/heavy song that really sets the standard for the rest of the album. The next 9 songs are amazing, but you can skip some of the last songs. 'Capillarian Crest' is the most popular single off the album and it is also one of the best. The song starts off with some vocals, then it completely changes into a crazy guitar solo for the remaining length. I also recommend listening to 'Colony of Birchmen' and 'Bladecatcher' if you only have to download a couple songs from the album. I would definately recommend this album to returning listeners of Mastodon, as Blood Mountain is arguably better than Leviathan, those who listen to metal, and general fans of music with a well-rounded taste. Seriously, buy the whole album, it friggin rocks!

- Not really a mastodon fan, but i still like it

At first, i didn't like mastodon, but when i saw them at the unholy alliance tour, i instantly liked them. This album is good, maybe better than Leviathan

- Metal for everyone!

Mastodon have created a masterful explosion of storytelling and prog-metal in "Blood Mountain". Each song is a story of inner depth, consisting of hatred or anxiety. The album itself serves purpose to show that metal itself can at times be flawlessly entertaining and creative. I am not a metal fan myself but I can see the artistic credibility that comes out of this tour-de-force whirlwind of raging screams and hardcore riffs. Some songs even have a dark beauty about them. You have to give this album more than one chance to understand it. At first I didn't believe the hype but now after seeing and hearing the visions for the second time I can honestly say this may be the greatest metal album of all time, if not, the greatest metal of the year.

- I Love Mastodon

Really, there's not much more to say.....

- Best metal cd I've heard in 10 years

Mastodon has expanded upon their previous style of straight-forward heaviness, and put in elements of progressive rock and even blues. Truly incredible.

- pretty sweet

brp

- Throw the goat! Hail Mastodon.

Blood Mountain is an awesome follow up to Leviathan. The riffs are huge, solos shred throughout, and Brann Dailor is one of the sickest drummers out there. Nice guest vox from Joshua Homme on Colony of Birchmen and Pendulous Skin is a great closer.

- Excellent album.

Mastodon are one of those bands no one really likes until they're seen touring with someone that everyone does. Likewise, I saw them with Lamb of God and Slayer on the Unholy Alliance, and I was instantly in love with the sound. Blood Mountain is one of the best albums I've heard in a while, and with good reason. For any fans of death metal, metalcore, and the like.

- lastest and greatest

This was the 1st mastodon album i purchased, and i was blown away. this was one of my first approches to heavy metal, and this was a good introduction. while most people say that colony of birchmen is the best song, with a grammy nomination to prove it, many others are outstanding. pendoulous skin, capillarian crest, and the wolf is loose are just some. a great album by a great band.

- Thank God for Mastodon.....

For those of us whose passion for metal started with Sabbath and grew with the evolution of the genre, Blood Mountain, and Mastodon in total, has a way of incorporating what appears to be so many different influences. Having said that, what they do is so unique and original that I truly believe that they will go down in history as one of the greatest metal bands of all time. Every true fan of metal must embrace this record. It is OUTSTANDING.

- Phenomenal

Amazing album: great guitars, fast drums, new sound to voices, truly a masterpiece

- Mastodon Rocks!

Just like their website says... they rock! Excellent production, killer musicians. As a longtime (30 years plus) bass guitarist I'd like to say "that's the best one in the group" but that would say the others were lesser. So I'll just have to say they're all - great! My current favorite is "Colony of Birchmen" but I'm really getting into the other ones too. The addition of Blood and Thunder (Live) is excellent too. You can't go wrong with these guys.
