Wanted John Lennon music....got this in my search results....great.
I bought the cd from the store and didnt get the extra 13 songs that are on iTunes, but I still enjoy the music. Even though there are a few songs that arent as good, the overal of the cd is awesome, and it goes to a good cause. Ignore the bad and enjoy the good. Carrie
If people are really as concerned with what was going on in the world they would do a lot more then just buy a song from itunes. think about it how much are you really helping and listen to the music you like and try the ones you don't. be open minded, kind of ironic so many people are negative about a bunch of lennon songs.
Why doesn't iTunes play ACTUAL John Lennon songs?? I want the originals? Also... WHERE ARE THE BEATLES ON ITUNES??!!??? Also, the artists chosen to sing these songs... not always so good... Avril Lavigne singing Imagine...is a HUGE MISS
The songs on this cd are all amazing (but its john lennon, what else did you expect?). I love the way so many of the artists made the songs completely original, and I expecially love Green Day's take on Working Class Hero. So all in all, its a great album and it goes towards an great cause. What more can you ask from you music?
all i have to say u2 made an amzing song and that is all
That this is for a tremendous cause is neither debatable nor critiquable. These reviews of the music album shouldn't necessarily speak one way or the other to that. I find it odd that people are up at arms for those who are critiquing the music regardless of the cause this album was made for. The cause is worthy and just and that's all that needs to be said. Now, as a review of a music album, I can't help but find this album lackluster. The hodgepodge of pop stars - elder statesmen and en vogue tastes - makes for a pretty hit and miss endeavor, just by its nature. And while some surprise (Avril Lavigne's "Imagine" is a fair bit better than I had expected and the Deftones use of the filtered voice recalls Lennon's own on "Jealous Guy"), many disappoint. Both "Instant Karma"s are bad (with Duran Duran's just plan atrocious), Kravitz' "Cold Turkey" needs to detox somewhere and Rossdale's take on "Mind Games" is way off the mark. I won't comment on the inclusion of 3 different versions of "Imagine" (Lennon has a large enough catalog that they could've picked a different song for each artist featured). As a tribute album to Lennon, while this has a few gems, it is overall a miss. Pick up the much better "Working Class Hero" tribute album from Hollywood Records done about 10 or 12 years ago and donate to the cause independently.
Regina Spektor does a wonderful version of "Real Love", and Los Lonely Boys fuse Lennon and Tex-Mex like nobody else could. However. Not that impressed with U2. Christina Aguilera? B.E.P? Green Day? Avril Lavigne? The music is overall not that good. Half of these bands are just here for a political statement, I am willing to bet. Sure, it's for charity. But know what else is for charity? Charity. If you're gonna sell something, make it good. Otherwise, I'll just donate to the Red Cross.
John Lennon left such a mark in our world. It's pretty hard to honnor him properly. But, with the cause, and the effect, this made a good try! I want to give props to The Amnesty International Campaign to Darfur, for bringing attention to Darfur, and all of the horrors going on there. Anyway, there are quite a few excellent remakes on here. They are: -Real Love -Working Class Hero -Instant Karma -(Just Like) Starting Over -Power to the People -Beautiful Boy Anywho, support the cause learn about Darfur, and listen to great music all at the same time!
I started listening to this album right after I downloaded it from iTunes around midnight, and I couldn't get to sleep until 1:30. Inspired and inspiring performances by some surprising performers, old and new. Lenny Kravitz funkin up "Cold Turkey", Jack Johnson breathing new life into tired old "Imagine", Christina Aguilera delivering a searing "Mother", and so much more. And you 'do good' by making this purchase. We should all do more than buy a CD, but if you want to start wading into citizen activism and have a lot of fun at the same time, then check this out. John Lennon like you've never heard him before. Very fun.
This has quickly become one of my all time favorite albums. What a great tribute to a great man, and all for a great cause! To see so many different artists come together in John's memory is a testimony to his lasting influence. There is truly something here for everyone. Out of the 34 tracks there are only two I don't care for, but the album is well worth every penney.
Why do they hate John Lennon so? No stars for the album, 2 for the cause.
It is really great that they are doing this, but they just can't beat the original. Working Class Hero, Oh, My Love, and Instant Karma are good.
While Darfur is a serious problem..... So are some of these covers. They are so painful to listen to. After hearing the Jack Johnson cover of Imagine a little part of myself died. R.I.P. John Lennon. Glad you didn't see this
Some hits and some misses. A lot more misses than hits.... U2 did a great job. Green Day kind of messed up. Overall not very good- good cause thought. Don't mess with Lennon's stuff in the future.
Imagine people from diverse musical backgrounds coming together to sing the songs of John Lennon for a charitable. It could be a messy montage, but it is not. These artists are theselves dreamers, searching for an answer to the horror that is Darfur, one that the governments involved can't seem to see. This album actually makes you forget that it is for a charitable cause.
This album talks about peace no poverty. And this is the way the world should act, so who cares if it doesn't have all the songs but it is a good album! People who wan't peace should so buy this album!
It should be obvious to everyone that since this is not John Lennon. So none of these covers will be as brilliant as his work was. That's a given. But the work these artists have put forward is, for the most part, pretty good. I particularly enjoyed Jacob Dylan feat. Dhani Harrison and Green Day. People may complain that these artists aren't as good as John Lennon but that's hardly the point in a cd like this. Kudos to these artists. John Lennon songs are layered in emotional complexities and it's always nice to see new musicians taking on the challenge of Lennon's music.
Firstly, this is such a great cause, and it says a lot about each of the collaborators who took time out of his or her own careers to record a song. Everyone will like different songs because of his or her individual taste in music. I will say that I cannot stand Avril Lavigne, but admittedly she does a wonderful, simple version of "Imagine" that, coming from such a youg voice, sounds innocent and idealistic. Quite beautiful. What I really liked about this album was the original takes on old gems. Me'Shell Ndegeocello's "Imagine" was totally original, U2's "Instant Karma" is great, and Xtina sounds raw and personal on "Mother." She really nails the song, and spares the usually vocal hystrionics. Other highlights for me include Postal Service's "Grow Old with Me" and Regina Spektor's flawless and gorgeous "Real Love." If nothing else, from a musical standpoint, this album is really interesting; it's fun to see some of these artists either depart from their usual styles, or add their unique perspectives to old classics. .....and it's all for a great, worthy cause.
Seriously people. Stop dissing this album. It's for an extremely good cause. To the haters, do you even know what's going on in Darfur? Exactly. I personally think that this album is a very good take on many of John Lennon's songs. It's not only a good album, but it's also charity.
This album was fabulous. Some of the songs might of not been up to par, but there are some that just exceed it. Like Christina Aguilera, Mother. One of the best on there. I think the cause is great and I love to have younger people listen to these amazing lyrics.
I have to be one of the biggest fans of Xtina. She has one of the most natural gifts for singing in the world. In the song, "Mother," she not only delivers her superlative vocal abilities, she gives a heart felt song that is filled with meaning. It is a must have for anyone who loves her music and even for those who are skeptical of her. Some people say that she is too wild and "out there" to be on such a meaningful album, but she is the best person to shout the message to the world. I’m so glad that money from her and other’s songs is going to this cause…
John Lennon spread a message of love and peace and being brother and brother. Having all these talented muicians come and make this album for a good cause is great. People dont know what is happening next door, let alone in Darfur and this album will help those in need. All we are saying is give peace a chance.
This is a great track to bring attention to something that's been happening for quite a while. If you can only buy a few tracks, here are my suggestions: *Instant Karma-U2 *#9 Dream-REM *Cold Turkey-Lenny Kravitz *Imagine-Avril Lavigne & the Jack Johnson version *Nobody Told Me-Big & Rich *Working Class Hero-Green Day *I'm Losing You-Corinne Bailey Rae *Beautiful Boy-Ben Harper *Isolation-Snow Patrol *Real Love-Regina Spektor On a side note, rerleasing Lennon songs as the originals is a terrible idea. Why would people buy something they already have. No, these aren't as good as the originals, but there's a lot of diversity in here that a lot of people would enjoy listening to.
I was so happy to see that Amnesty International was realeasing an album to raise money for Darfur (an issue very important to me) and using old John Lennon songs (I am a hugh fan) and having new people perform them (U2! etc.) It had a promising single, Working Class Hero performed by Green Day so I was optimistic and pre ordered it. While I am happy to have supported the cause I feel these amazing songs were not performed as well as they should been with the exception of Instant Karma. Worknig Class Hero, and Give Peace A Chance.
None of the songs are markes as explicit, but Working Class Hero has F--- in it 2 times
I cant seem to figure out what the Lennon/Yoke-oh angle is. Having a couple of Manhatten capitalists "shill" for peace is kind of beyond me. The usual suspects are here, General Bono in his hat, Lenny, etc. Ok enuf of that, back to the music. It's it & miss as with any of these affairs. The music overall is great but the songs are a little weak. Thank goodness for mondern digital production. I would say definatly cherry pick your favorites, leave the rest for he "where are they now" file...
probably my favorite song in this whole album is imagine.
A little comment on #8: Daddy, can I have some talent? just kidding, Jakob is a great artist and I'm not familiar with Dhani but I'm sure she is too
this cd is awesome. i mean, what other way to help darfur then to get great muscians together and make a cd to fight the poverty? love it x9843750972345 soo hxc
This album presents a unique comination of good music for a good cause. Attention is finally being attracted to the key issues of today through admired ambassadors of good will. A rebirth of the hippie-esque protest songs is at hand, with the support of the people behind it. The "new generation" of musicians is remolding the exquisite music of John Lennon, providing a pleasant way to feel good about doing something positive for our world.
Lennon is amazing and everything following his memory is enchanted with his power. I like the Snow Patrol, Regina Spektor, Jaguares, and Postal Service covers. I suggest downloading at least one of these. -To Lennon
This album is great!!! I will admit it has some less than perfect songs BUT it also has some great ones. Plus it is for a great cause, i would recocmend this album to anyone. And to all you people who give it a bad score you are all critics and morons.
To the people out there whining, if you wanted to hear exact replicas, then why buy the album? Buy the original! The album is a great mixture of artists doing their rendition of some great classics and it is for a great cause. Yeah a few songs arent on it that are available in stores, I understand the gripe there. Overall of the songs included REM, Aerosmith, Green Day, Christina, Duran Duran all do fantastic versions of the originals, but dont forget the lesser knowns who do an equally spectacular job as well. I love the album!
Excellent Music and great cause!
I gave this album 5 stars because it has some great songs. But that is not the only reason I am giving it 5 stars. Another good reason would be because the money taken in for this album is going to someone in need. That is why these people who made this album are heroes. And you can be a working class hero if you buy this album! So if you ever say that life isn't fair, you should remember the people of Darfur and other poor countries around the world. Rock on and keep the peace!
Some of the songs on here are excellent. My two favorite songs are imagine by jack johnson and imagine by avril lavigne. Jack's Mannequin didn't do so well. I guess there are some songs only John Lennon can sing.
you have to look past the negative you see in the album if you see any. Think of the cause, the cause of this CD makes up for the negativity some may see. I myself enjoyed all the songs on this CD. It really makes you think about life and how fortunate we are.
I've had a really negative view of this collection when it first appeared here. In some aspects I still do, but I've reconsidered my opinions somewhat, because after all it is a noteworthy cause, and I knew that John would definetly have supported this. Suffice it to say I like SOME of what's on here, not ALL. Some of these covers I'll admit are decent, but I'm not jumping for joy for the rest though. BTW, John Lennon's classic album "Double Fantasy" WAS on iTunes for a couple of weeks. As for me I was overjoyed to say the least, because I thought his whole catalog was soon on it's way, but for some disturbing reason, both Lennon and Double Fantasy disappeared together and has not since returned. Does anyone know what happened? I'd really love to find out why it was pulled from the iTunes store and hasn't so far surfaced again. Thanks.
Well priced at 34 songs for $20 Its for a cause to help people. Good song selection is evident since I am 21 and I recognize a number of these songs. If your curious. If you like to listen to full albums of good songs. If you have any ounce of a reason you should buy this. In summary if you've read this far then you should start downloading the album!!!
Three different versions of "Imagine?" Hasn't been my favorite album, but hopefully at least it went to a good cause.
I love this album. John Lennon was such a great guy. and so were all the beatles. i love Green Day in Working Class hero. and the Give Peace a Chance by Aerosmith. & All of the songs are great. :D R.I.P John Lennon
Okay I guess my review didn't make it (Probably becuase I talked a little about who sang the songs on this album). Well I just wanted to say that it's a good cause for charity, but they could of gotten different singers. John Lennon is very political and it's sad to not have him here, but I think you should also listen to "ACOUSTIC". John Lennon and Yoko made it together (I think it was pretty recent before...you know) It's really good too because he just let's you know how he sees things and it's just him and his guitar (no distortion, no word changes, and no remixes). The guitar chords are very simple too. Some I must admit are kind of tough to listen to. It's not in iTunes so go to your local music store (they should have it). I did by 2 songs to help out charity a little though. The words in Real Love (by Regina Spektor) are different than John's, but it's seemed like a response which was pretty cool. I also like Jack Johnson's too. Okay that's all I'll say.... Good Cause, But Too Much Pop and Alternative for me. I never heard of Double Fantasy....hmmm.
If everyone just buys at least one song off this album darfur would be over by now so go ahead spend somemoney get good songs and help save darfur
I recommend this completely. The songs aren't terrible at all. Everyone gave their own twist on these songs. ((Though originals are always better, sorry)) And it is for an awesome cause.
With all of the hateful things going on currently in our world, and stars reaching out with the help of iTunes to stop a genocide, what can't buying 1 or 2 songs from this album hurt (many of these songs are really good, too)? As Jesus said, When you have a banquet, invite those who cannot repay you, for you shall be repaid greatly". Well, here's your chance to sponsor and invite someone to a banquet who isn't able to repay you!
Buy the amazing Flaming Lips cover of Just Like Starting Over. Most of these artists dont deserve to be covering John Lennon... Big and Rich, Avril, Black Eyed Peas, ect.??? Only Youssou N Dour and Flaming Lips really need to be here. Wilco, Iron and Wine,Nice Cave, Tom Waits, ect, so many others could have done justice to a truly powerful body of work
This set of songs is a master piece that, in my view will be remembered for years. Not only are most of the songs great covers, the relief they go to is all for a good cause. Lennon was a genius, I doubt that anyone will deny this fact, but what these 34 artists did is genius in it self. I think that this an album that will stand the test of time and society. This album deserves its five star rating.
working class hero imagine and power to the people are the only good songs on here
I loved this cd and its also a great cause. my favorite song is imagine.
