Santana - Smooth (feat. Rob Thomas)

Smooth (feat. Rob Thomas) by Santana Song Info

Smooth is a collaboration between Santana and Rob Thomas, the latter of the rock group Matchbox Twenty. The song was written by Rob Thomas and Itaal Shur and sung by Rob Thomas. Originally conceived by Shur as a song called "Room 17", the lyrics were stripped off and the track was given to Thomas. Thomas re-wrote the lyrics and melody and re-titled it "Smooth". Thomas's original thought was to have George Michael sing the song. Thomas recorded the song as a demo to play for Santana. After hearing the song being sung by Thomas, Santana decided to have Thomas record the final version. Matt Serletic produced the record and it was released from Carlos Santana's album Supernatural and became a massive hit in 1999, entering the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 on August 10, 1999, and spending twelve weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 beginning October 12, 1999. It was the first chart-topping song in Santana's long-running career (his previous biggest hit being "Black Magic Woman", number four in 1971). According to some charting standards, "Smooth" is Billboard's most popular song of all time. Though some songs have spent longer than 12 weeks at number one, when combining total sales during the entire time the song has charted, "Smooth" ranks higher than any other. The song was the last number one hit of the 1990s. The song won three Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. It spent a record-breaking ten consecutive weeks at the top of the VSpot Top 20 Countdown, a record that held up until the Dixie Chicks broke it in 2006. According to Billboard's Hottest Hot 100 Hits by Fred Bronson, this is the number-one song of The Nineties (2003). A cover version of the song is included in the Wii version of Samba de Amigo. Escape the Fate also recorded a cover version of the song for the compilation album Punk Goes Pop 2, released on March 10, 2009. The song features a Latin-influenced feel, inspired by the classic Santana song, "Guajira". Rob Thomas wrote this song for his wife, Marisol Thomas. The pair married in 1999, after meeting backstage in 1998. Of Spanish origin, she was the inspiration behind lines such as, "My muñequita, my Spanish Harlem Mona Lisa". Thomas stated in interviews that the phrase "Spanish Harlem Mona Lisa" was inspired by the 1972 Elton John song Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters, which includes references to the 1961 Ben E. King song Spanish Harlem. On Billboard magazine's rankings of the top songs of the first fifty years of the Hot 100 singles chart, "Smooth" was ranked as the number-two song overall (behind only "The Twist) and the number-one rock song in the history of the chart.

- WHERES CARAVANSERAI???

Why in all the glory of this CD did they forget to include any of the songs from that legendary work of art? This is a great compilation, but needed some Caravanserai at least one song.

- Missing a few

"She's Not There" from Moonflower has the definitive Santana solo and was a big FM hit from "back in the day".

- eh

good collecition i guess but if you want the real best of Santana check out his first few albums

- Santana rocks!

Carlos Santana is one of the best guitarists ive ever heard. I love hearing the unique, jazzy, latin sound that Santana has. Of course, nowadays Santana mostly does features with other aritists, but most of the old classics are just as good. Santana can take the crappiest aritist and make them sound unbelievable. I would definetley recommend buying Smooth (with Rob Thomas) Into the Night (with Chad Kroeger) Why Dont You & I (with Alex Band) and my personal favorite, Just Feel Better (with Steven Tyler). Also, remember to buy Black Magic Woman and Evil Ways. Both are excellent songs.

- into the night

i seriously love the song "into the night" its great. got good music. anyone who loves rock would like the song. IT FREAKING ROCKS! and i would have to say its definately my very favorite song at the moment! i would surely buy it! DO IT u wont regret...

- Awsome

One of santanas best

- YES!!!

All Santana's Greatest. Including: "Smooth", "Into the Night", and "The Game of Love", with Rob Thomas, Chad Kroger, and Michelle Branch in that order. What more could you ask for??? Thanks again Santana!!!

- Ultimate Santana

This was an awesome collection of the best of Santana. I would highly recommend anyone who loves Santana's music to add this to their collection!

- santanas great

santana is such a good guitar player. i feel so lucky that i got his autograph when my dad went to work for him.hes a really nice guy and i see him every where in my town. hes soooo great

- SMOOTH

Smooth RULES

- Not Feeling It

I ve been a Santana fan for a looooong time -- we are the same vintage, ya' know. So, I was dissappointed when the last tour ended having gotten to see him 2x - Vegas and Atlanta. You can imgine my excitment when the new c.d. was announced -- and my disappontment when I realized I already owned the tracks -- I was expecting NEW material....serious bummer. What have you Santana been doing for the last year! Go back to work!.... Peace - Johnny

- great. just great.

Santana's music is some of the most enjoyable to listen to, and has (I feel) more talented guitar playing than a lot of bands I've listened to. Carlos Santana is a musical god, enough said.

- great album

i love the songs "into the night" w/ chad kroeger from nickelback, and the song "Smooth" w/ Rob Thomas.

- into the night rocks

good song really liked it

- WOW Just Amazing

A great album of new and classics directly from Carlitos to you!

- Missing

With the lack of "Winning", "Hold On" and "Nowhere To Run" (not to mention a re-record of the great track, "Game of Love" - for which is odd to say for someone who loves Tina Turner as much as I do), I find this collection only worthy of it's sound quality. But song selection is beyond the typical complaint most have with collections. WAY BEYOND!

- All in one!

Ultimate Santana has great songs I haven't heard in a while. Of course Into the Night the greatest song on there, it still has other songs I like.

- Fantastic as usual

Santana never fials to impress with their great mexican feel and carlos santanas shiver inducing solos and they produced again.

- Woo Hoo...

Can I just say that this is one of the sexiest albums I own!!! Carlos makes that guitar sing baby...

- SMOOTH!!!

OMG! I love this song! Smooth great song it gets you on a happy nice mood I just love it!! I'm 16 but so? who cares? I told my friends and they laughed! I was like ok... I dont care I LOVE THIS SOONNGGG!! and so should you!! LOL JK!!! ♥

- luv the guitar!!!

out of all of these songs i think that into the night is one of the best ones. def buy it!

- Great Album!

This was the third album i have from santana and it has most of his classics. I urge anyone who likes santanan's music to buy this album!

- Totally Awesome Except For One Song

I love this album. The only song I didn't like was "Into the Night" because it was mostly Chad Kroeger and there was very little Santana.

- missing one thing

this compilation is missing the best song ever by santana which is song of the wind

- ROCK ON!

A great collection of great songs. If you got some cash, buy it.

- Awesome Album!!!

Santana is my favorite and I was so happy when this album came out. In my opinion there is no song on this album that is bad, they are all great songs. The only thing that I was dissapointed in was that more than half of the songs are with another band. His next album though is going to only inculde music that he choses which will rock!!! Go Santana!!!

- SANTANA! CHAD! MARIA,MARIA! SATANA!

Sorry, I couldn't hold anymore excitement or my little heart may have bursted!

- Best of all Santana

Top 5 1. Into the night 2. Smooth 3. Interplanetary Party 4. Put Your Lights On 5. Black Magic Women

- Into The Night? No.

Despite the addition of an over-played song, this album is still amazing. But screw the appearence Nickelback's vocalist, there's so much better on this album.

- great varioty of singers

satana is the chillest guitar player ever with a great taste of artists. chad kroeger from nickleback and rob thomas have the best tracks on the cd. the hottest songs are, into the night smooth, game of love, and why dont you nd i. great cd, worth the money

- No Soul Sacrifice

Great collection, but without Soul Sacrifice (especially the Woodstock version) this is NOT the ultomate Santana.

- YES!

If only they had this for everyone...18 awesome tracks for 10 bucks? Heck yeah!

- Great if you want the commerical stuff

The greatest Santana album of all time is Welcome and the next greatest is Borboletto. There is not a single song from either in this compliation. That is understandable in the context that we are looking at commercial hits that people recognize - but wouldn't it be great one day if we could get compliations with really the best songs from an artist?

- Great!

Santana is great at mixing elements of latin music with classic rock. I love Tina's version of "The Game Of Love". Chad Kroeger performance on "Into The Night" is great! This CD is outstanding.

- INTO THE NIGHT!!

GREATEST SONG EVER!!!! SANTANA IS A LEGEND!!!

- 99cents worth get..

This boy's fire its the best song next to maria maria of course

- You really need to listen!

My first song that I ever heard by santana is Smooth. My play count 7608 times. It is one of the best songs on the album. Into the Night is fantastic. And Just Feel Better with Steven Tyler is just amazing. I would recommend listen to the previews of all the songs.

- question here

Question: Does this album play the entire "Black Magic Woman" with the incredible closing jam or does it cut like on Sanatana's Greatest hits Album? (infuriating!!)

- Carlos for Prez!

This is a must buy for any rock fan. Nickelback fans should love "Into The Night" too because of the Nickelback lead singer singing and playing acoustic guitar. This is one of the greatest albums ever!

- Santana is timeless!!

I love Santana's music, always bringing his singnature guitar solos to the songs, which is a main reason of why i love his music. Maria Maria, Into the Night, and Smooth have got to be my most favorite songs on this album. No one will ever stop listening to Santana, I know i wont.

- Great CD

It's all good. Not a bad song on the whole disc.

- rpbb86

One of the finest cds ever!! I love It!!

- This is Santana?

I am still trying to understand why there are only three new songs on this 18 song compilation. Santana needs to find his producer and manager and fire them immediatley!!! Bring back the ROOTS...we need another Abraxas!

- pretty sweet

.

- Gnawsome!!

This has my favorite songs by Santana, but I haven't heard over half of these songs.

- Santana Does It Again

Wow. I have loved Santana since Supernatural came out when I was...not very old. I would always liten to Maria Maria and Snooth. And now I love Into The Night. This whole CD, and anything by Santana is amazing that anyone would love. A must-have!

- A collaboration? At least it was on sale.

Half the tracks are "with" someone other than Santana, and they sound like it. The Steven Tyler sounds like Aerosmith, Tina Turner sound like Tina Turner, the forgettable mooks sound like forgettable mooks.... Some of them are tollerable and some are even good, but I've already deleted 3 tracks from my library after one listen. Yes, deleted from my library. I don't want to hear them again. Skip this album and buy the individual tracks of the people you like. If you want Santana for Santana try another album.

- carloes santana hot hot hot !

santana is one of the most best guitarist that known.his music is the best.i have my own guitar to and when ever i hear his music it makes me want to practice more and more so i could be as good as he could play.this is my favorite aulbum keep rockin santana.
