Fugees - Killing Me Softly With His Song

Killing Me Softly With His Song by Fugees Song Info

Lori Lieberman was the first to record Fox and Gimbel's song, in 1971, but it became a bigger hit when covered by Roberta Flack in 1973. Her version won three Grammy Awards: Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Female Performer and it was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for 4 weeks. Hip hop group The Fugees covered the song in 1996 on their album The Score, with Lauryn Hill singing the lead vocals. Their version became a massive hit reaching number two on the U.S. airplay chart, and had similar success in the UK, reaching number one and selling over a million copies, becoming 1996's best selling single in the country. Propelled by the success of the Fugees track, the version by Flack was remixed in 1996 and topped the Hot Dance Club Play chart. The Fugees version of the song is on the game Karaoke Revolution Volume 3. In 2008, it was ranked number 25 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop. Other major artists to cover the song include Carol King, Herb Alpert, Engelbert Humperdinck, Frank Sinatra, Tori Amos, Alison Moyet, Eva Cassidy, Perry Como, The Jackson 5, Mina, Anne Murray, Luther Vandross, Toni Braxton, Alicia Keys, Jaco Pastorius, The Plain White T's, The Youngblood Brass Band, Shirley Bassey, John Holt and Usha Uthup.

- I get mad frustrated

I don't understand why not a single review mentioned "How Many Mics," which is my favorite song on the album by far.. but that's okay.. the other songs are awesome too..

- Cornerstone of Hip Hop?

This aint even in the ballpark iTunes. Disgrace to put these fools up there. Wheres eric b, De La? y'all are lops.

- One of the Best Ever!!!!

If for some reason you don't have this album, got get in right now. Listened to it for the first time in a while the other day and remembered how great it is. One of the best Hip Hop albums ever!!

- Simply Incredible

The Fugees put out The Score when Gangsta Rap was at an all time high, so this album was truely out of left field. Not only is this one of the most successful Rap albums of all time, but it revived the true essence of East Coast Hip Hop. This is a great piece of musical history and truly a work of art. Thank you Fugees for giving us this masterpiece.

- LOVE THEIR VOICES

their voices work so well together. I LOVE IT! the best song is Killing Me Softly With His Song. LOVE IT TOO! I WOULD SO BUY THIS CD IF I WERE U!!! <3 peace

- Fugees-The Score

this is easily the best hip hop album ever made! Beats to bob you head to, hooks you love to sing along with, sick rhymes, intelligent well thought lyrics, and beautiful singing thanks to Lauren Hill! A must own! This album is timeless... So good that when I had it on cd, I wore it out!

- greatest

one of the best ever

- illest music ever made

These are some of the best mc's ever, and not only that but the beats are hot, and their sound is truely original. Seriously, forget your soulja boy and get this album instead, because along with PE, Run D.M.C., and N.W.A, this is one of the best rap groups of all time.

- the best hip hop album ever.

the is the ultimate hip hop masterpiece. period.

- Real Hiphop

This is a classic album! A real Hiphop album! It can't ever be duplicated and I'm glad iTunes has it in its entirety. This is a great addition to my collection.

- Classic Hip Hop!

This is one of the few CD's that I can listen to from beginning to end without skipping. Every song has a different theme, style, or meaning. I wish the Fugees could pull it together to make more classic hip hop!

- Hit or miss for me.

I like this album, but I hate about 25% of the songs. 50% are good and the other 25 are amazing. I'd still recomend it because although its not really for me, that's just one man's opinion and what I say shouldn't impose on your tastes.

- Ooh La La La

Here goes a true hip hop classic....This album stands out amongst others released around the same time, because not only were they one of the few crews with a female MC, but they had IMO the best female MC (others being MC Lyte, Bahamadia, Lady of Rage, Jean Grae). Wyclef was about to breakout as a star as well. I almost deducted a star for Pras's sub-par performance, but Clef and Lauren made up for him lol....

- You HAVE to buy this

This is probably the best Hip-Hop album ever. Start with Fu-Gee-La (Refugee Camp Remix) and Family Business and Manifest, and then work your way trough the album. Their songs are so great. Lauren Hill is the best female singer in the world (cuz she's the only one I like).

- Classic

Words can't even depict this album, only ears. There will never be another hiphop album that will reach that status

- Fugees are Simply Unreal

Beats are outrageous. Pras, Wyclef, Lauryn Hill absolutely dominate the mic. This is what it should be. Flow is absolutely ridiculous. Personal favorites include The Beast, Zealots, The Mask, Family Business, Fu-Gee-La, Cowboys. All of them are too good to be true. I can't imagine trying to write even one verse of any of these songs. Lyrics gel and mesh with the beats like no other. The Score is what its all about. Simply one of the best rap albums of all time, and it will be forever. Period. Let's get high off the Fu-Gee-La.

- Where fugees at?

This album makes me hope the fugees never get back together (unless they're doing a back in the day concert). This is a must have album for anybody who is a real music fan. It's labeled hip hop but really it more than that. The magic of this album is one of a kind, crossover and real all at once. They will never come close to this magic again and that's ok.

- Simply amazing!

I have listened to this album through and through. It is truely a great hip-hip album; waaayyyy better than what is out now. If you're thinking about buying this... DO IT! You will not regret it!

- This is somethin

one of the greatest albums of all time. why the hell did they have to feud? if they would not have split, they would still be killin it with the right stuff. and oh yea, Lauryn hill has the best voice ive ever heard.

- best rap album ever

this is simply the best hip hop album ever created. It's a shame the Fugees are having issues with their record label in terms of artistic freedom. This album has reason for being the best selling hip hop album ever (18x Platinum), because it is simply a masterpiece. Every song has an amazing beat, with conscious, well though-out lyrics from Wyclef, Lauryn Hill, and Pras. Lauryn Hill does some of her best rhyming on the album and shows why she's an inspiration for all women in hip hop. There is not a bad song on the album. At all. Listen from beginning to end with no problem.

- the best of REAL hip hop

this is the only good hip hop theres been in years!

- its about time

wow itunes it took u this long 2 get this masterpiece, now all we need is the beatles

- The real deal

Every song on this album is mind blowing. You gotta listen to this masterpiece from beginning to end. Peace.

- Masterpiece

This is one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. I have more or less stopped listening to hip hop, it is just not the same anymore. This album is timeless, and is always in my playlist and in my cars CD player.

- Lauryn Hill is awesome!

She is the biggest flameout of all time! I respect her for not wanting to take part in the Hollywood scene, but man is she good! I agree. Why do we have pop-fake-synth beats like flo rida and soulja boy and others riding on top of the charts when real artists like lauryn hill lurk in the shadows just because they sound, well, real.

- ready or not

awesome song, took me back in the day

- Takes me back

I loved the Fugees in high school & listened to this "tape" every day. I'm so glad to have it in my collection again. They just don't make music like this anymore =( One of the best albums of all time!!!

- Great album

This is a wonderful album it is not like all the other rap out there. This is actually good. and degrading to women. Lauryn Hill has an amzaing voice

- SO fly

This album has got some insane beats and they all hav got mad flow. Most of this new hiphop is crap compared to the oldschool stuff like Jeru the damaja and mobb deep

- The score

Awesome beets and rhythms. Lyrics are great and killing me softly , ready or not, fugeela are my favorite songs on the album. Major r&b and the hip hop is off the chain

- Classic

If your into Hip Hop and dont own this album then theres something wrong with you

- Realness

This album is the dopest one of the best I've ever heard I remember I bought this when it was on tape used to listen to it everyday

- Love it

The Score is one my favorite hip hop albums Lauryn Hill has the most the most beautiful voice ever on this album

- Long Live The Refugee Camp

Simply this is a blue print album many of todays rappers should follow beacuse this album has it all R&B,Rap,Hip-Hop,Reggea all without Killing the Genre wish they made a comeback or anyone make an album like the Refugee Camp so if you dont have this album is a must.

- Still Gettin' High Off the Fu-Gee-La in '09

Along with Illmatic, Enter the Wu-Tang, Wu-Tang Forever, and 2Pac's Greatest Hits, The Score is one of my favorite cd's. It's a shame that they can't get their ish together and put out more music. The production is superb. They address so many subject matters like street life, family, overaggressive law enforcement, wannabe gangster rappers, their critics, and so on. L. Boogie shined on this LP. They'll never be another album like this.

- Great

This is old school.

- Painful to the ears

After listening to this album i wanted to bang my head on something because that would have been preferable to the way this album made my ears and my head feel.

- ridiculous.

this album is one of hip-hop's masterpieces and it only has 3 reviews? these mc's are sick.

- Why can't more albums be like this...

This is the only cd of it's kind. Soul/R&B/HipHop done well. Most people who listen to mainstream (ie people who don't listen to enough music) will enjoy "Ready or Not", or "Killing Me Softly" because they're radio friendly and have good harmony and beats. This cd has far more to offer than just the mainstream songs, Manifest, The Mask, Cowboys, The Score, Zealots are all amazing songs that in my opinion have a far greater message than the sugar coated mainstream songs. Bottom line: Get this cd. If you don't like at least one song on this cd, then I can't imagine the crap you listen to.

- HIP HOP

teens take note,THIS IS HIP HOP,not Soulja boy and Flo rida, eminem(angry yelling, not hip hop) etc "Ready Or Not" is wonderful,as is 'How Many Mics' 'Killing me Softly with his song' 'Zealots' 'Fu-Gee-La' 'No Woman No Cry',is good, the melody reminds me of Whitney Houston's 'My Love is Your Love' wich is produced by Wyclef Jean

- Timeless Classic

God knows we need someone to fill the void left by L-Boogie. Nicki Manaj is some A**. With Lauryn, you admired her beauty, and skills. Wish she would return. Cop this as wells as Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

- Just fab!!!!!!

Love it! It's amazing how this album doesn't get old!!!! Buy it u'll love it as well.

- Hip Hop is unfair

How is it that great hip hop albums like this are compltely overlooked, and crap like souja boy or flo rida sits on the top of the charts. This is true hip hop. These mc's are extremely talented and the lyrics are creative and thoughtful. The fact that great albums like this don't get any recognition just blows my mind

- On Vinyl, CD and now from iTunes!

Paid 3 Times for this Album, bought almost every Single for DJing and I will never mind! Played the hell out of the CD back in the Days in Car. Bought almost every Single in 12" for the Clubs to DJ with, but the original Vinyl ist still untouched in my all time Favorites Collection. This will be for my iPad, iPhone and iPod! If you also Love this Masterpiece of Hip Hop Music click BUY!!! ;-)

- One of the Best!!

This is one of my favorite albums of all times. I have played the heck out of it but it still delivers. Every track is solid. Wyclef shows his genious on the production of this album.

- Real Hip Hip

Saw Ms Hill last night for her winter mini concert/tour in Atlanta. When "Many Mics" dropped and a snippet from "Zealots" whoa! ....Awesome song and the performance was amazing. Definitelu worth the download. I listen to The Miseducation album religiously. I got a feeling she's gonna come back hard! Love Lauryn and her spirit is just beautiful. God Bless her. "I add a mothaf*cka so you ignant N_s hear me." O_O

- Best hip hop album of all time

This has to be one of the best hip hop albums of all time, their voices goes so well together and it is a true classic. It is a crime that only 4 people have commented on this albm. The best songs have to be Killing Me Softly With His Song and Ready Or Not.

- Legend Album

This album is one of my favorite albums ever every song on this is off the chain and every one of the fugees did there thing on this album man i wish these guys never broke up.

- - Speechless -

This album is the most amazing thing I have ever heard - no lie. As some reviewer on here said, "How is it that great hip-hop like this is overlooked, while crap like Soulja Boy and Flo Rida is topping the charts?" I totally agree with that. This is the REAL DEAL folks. Hip-Hop can't get any better than this. Just don't buy this if you are offended by language, as there IS a lot of profanity. It's just not shown. :) BUY THE WHOLE THING! The reason why its so good is the way it's constructed. Buy without hesitation!

- Awesome

This is the Fugees greatest album and it can't be duplicated at all. I love this classic sound of raw HipHop and the acoustics of the instruments that you can't really find in todays HipHop. This album was so full of emotion and talent. Lauryn Hill was in her prime and brought so much to this album. Its a shame that this talented group of artist broke up.
