Dr.Kiwi - five stars!Classic Collection!! cheap to, almost to cheap ;)
Robee990 - This is so amazingI went to one of his concerts and i came home satisfyed. He was such a good musician and even defness didnt stop him! well i didnt go to one of his concerts but this sounds alot like what i listened to as a little kid! THANKS MOM! <3
NEK10 - Good Music, Good dealGREAT! All the symphonies for under 10 bucks! These are some of my favorite versions, and I believe that anyone who listens to them will think they are fantastic(especially for $10) ; )
Mr. Beale - Really. All 9 Symphonies for 8 Bucks.I know what you're thinking: this can't really be true, can it? All 9 symphonies for 8 bucks? There's a catch, right?
No, there isn't. This is all nine of his symphonies performed by one of the best orchestras in the world, with a great conductor at the helm. You can't go wrong here.
Moussorgsky1 - Okay, but am i the only person who notices the Change of pitch in the 9th?Most of these are solid, great performances (this is the LSO, after all.) But one of the problems in making these recordings is that, in the 9th symphony, 4th movement, the producers got the speed too high, and then they corrected it. So, it sounds wrong, then slowly gets right. Okay Performances, not entirely worth my money.
Charlie Carr - Amazing!I think these works are amazingly well done. You absolutely CANNOT beat the price for this amazing 34 piece album. All of the recordings are professional and stereo! I don't just comment anything. This is seriously worth the buy to anyone needing really good recording of these symphonies. Thank You LSO!
OgMac - Things You Should Know...............................*The man has no right to tell someone to "do some reserch" on this matter. If the guy doesn't like the third and fourth movements combined than he can still appreciate Beethoven's work without getting a history lesson over it. The other thing is, How can someone that goes into such great detail over Beethoven's music, be this bad of a speller and cast one stone of judgement on what the man should be doing research on? I don't care if this is petty, the man is a complete moron and made us all a little bit dumber by reading his rant. Shame on anyone who wrote this review as helpful. Here is some helpful info; Buy the music and go to the library...At least the Spellings correct in those books.
Eltrompetista - Great!!!!Over all it's a great price for a great cd
Orchestra - Absolute perfection. This album features a gorgeous rendition of Beethoven's music, and the price is to die for. What's better than that?
DJ Gringo Star - just to let you knowdude the 3rd and 4th movements are put together for a reson. that is how he wrote them, with no pause inbetween, If you are spiting up his symphonys you are losing the point of the work. the 5th is a story of beethoven over coming his destany and the life he was delt...ie... his hearing loss and sickness, the cencership from the austrian empire, the supresion of the lower class, and not to mention nipolean was taking over. do some reserch.
Eric Kracinski - Good interpretation, poor recording...These are recordings from 1960, when Krips was the principal conductor of LSO, and were considered among the best of the time along with Van Karajan's a few years later. Both offer similar interpretations, but this one suffers from a poor recording that peaks out on many of the more intense sections of many of the movements, the finale of the Ninth in particular.
I too am annoyed by the combination of movements in the Fifth, Sixth, and Ninth. Yes I know that they were written that way, but would it be too hard to ask a recording engineer to add a track mark with the tracks flowing together? All the other Beethoven cycles I have do so, why not here?
For the $10 it is a great intro to Beethoven's symphonies. Buy this one as a starter, but look for the Van Karajan or Norrington versions for better quality recordings.
Leroy Bubba Spanks - Terrible Recording QualityI bought this album, downloaded it to my iphone, listened to it, and then removed it because the quality of the recording is so poor. I didn't want to waste the space. Not Recommended!
aej2122 - Great for Studying! How can you pass up this price for the amount of value you recieve?
I needed an update to my study music collection, and this was a great choice. The 4th movement in Beethoven's 9th is simply amazing.
Sabep31 - Krips no goodI bought this CD at Best Buy, thinking it was a good value, but no. Josef Krips should not conduct Beethoven. Much, much better recordings exist.
LAK53 - One of the best buys on I TunesThese are very solid performances from the early 60s. Despite other reviews listed, the sound is very acceptable early 1960s sound. I'm not sure what the "these are too fast" comment means--they sound like middle of the road tempos to me. If you are looking for an intro to Beethoven for $10, you can't go wrong here. I found the Pastoral performance particularly enjoyable.
KPPKPP - GoodIf you are a classic music savvy you probably will not be impressed by it, unless you want to play it as background music or even at a gathering. The price is not bad so it's worth a listen.
Epicocity - Personally...I believe that DJ Gringo Star is correct. I do believe that he did write them that way, and it should be KEPT that way. Other than that, a perfectly good selection.
Aster Clementine :D - Alright as an IntroThese recordings are..alright. It gets the point across. But if you want some really fantastic renditions of Beethoven, find Die Berliner Philharmoniker (The Berlin Philharmonic) recordings. They're absolutely beautiful. But as to this particular collection, it's well worth the eight dollars. I mean, it's not the best Beethoven, but it's eight dollars for his ENTIRE symphonies.
Ethenz - PricingiTunes shouldn't charge for this! This music is public domain!
bossk226 - love iti am a big fan of good music like this
herzen - wonderful economical setI had these as LPs in the 1970s and liked them a lot. Great intro to the Beethoven Symphonies.
Krips was an excellent conductor and underrated. The LSO is a fine orchestra. The performance of the Pastoral is particularly good. If you dont know the Beethoven Symphonies, this is a great place to start.
box778899 - Don't buy if you are interested in audio quality. These are good performances, don't get me wrong. But the sound quality isn't up to my standards. You can hear a bit of distortion and "garbleness" when the songs get quiet. Maybe find this on a physical CD and import using apple lossless...
Arthurcello - Are you really sure?My father had a set of these recordings in the early 1960s so I don't know why it says 2008. They must be at least 50 years old and were the first classical LPs I ever listened to. Although not up to Krips and the London Symphony's usual standards they were quite good performances for their day but the sound is totally unacceptable my modern standards and the interpretation is very traditional. If want to get into Beethoven then save your money and try something more modern. I'll give it 2 stars for old times sake.
Former Irish Piper - Love the recordingI love this recording. Its great to be able to pick up all nine symphonies for such a great price. It is great tyo have somehting like this to listen to whule at work. So soothing.
Adrian14 - Awesome for the PriceHey I just want everybody out there to know how good of a deal this is. I mean, you're getting some of Beethoven's best and most known works all for under ten dollars. The only downside, and the only downside I see is how poor the sound quality is. I think for 90% of people, it won't matter. But I hear a lot of swishy swashy compressed stuff in the back and it sometimes drives me nuts. Other than that, an awesome deal and I think everybody should have this in their iTunes music collection.
currious reader - not bad, but leaves some to be desireda few decent recordings, but during the last movement of the 9th there is this AWFUL recording error that really ruined that piece for me. not bad for under 10$ though.
mike91740 - Mike’s Professional Ears Love It! FIVE STARS!Here’s a professional recording engineer’s opinion: To all the so-called “critic-reviewers” and naysayers in the list of reviewers of this work, I say PHOOEY!! This is a sublime collection, comprehensive and impressive, and EXTREMELY well recorded and performed. Yes, the recording techniques of the late 60’s were different than they are today, but not necessarily worse, especially with classical music. I can hear accent mics on the tympani and string bass, each string section, the woodwinds and other select instruments, but as a whole, this recording is marvelous. The stereo soundstage is terrific. It’s an analogue recording for goodness sake. I’ve heard modern digital recordings that are not nearly as good! Those who have complained of distortion or other perceived anomalies should dump their cheap, god-awful-sounding Apple earbuds that come with your iPod and get headphones of PROFESSIONAL quality (I use Sony’s exquisite MDR7506 Professional Studio Headphones), capable of reproducing the power, intensity and amazingly subtle nuances of this truly remarkable recording. There is NO distortion, NO strange compression in the recordings, only the dreadful compression that is inherent of the MP3/M4A technology that iTunes uses to deliver the music to us. And, yes, I’ve listened to the entire collection 3 times in a row, finding them increasingly breathtaking. The original recording engineers are to be commended for their excellent work. Most of you newbie listeners have no idea how complex and difficult a serious classical recording is to make, but these guys pulled it off - magnificently.
If you are not using GOOD headphones to listen and prefer to listen to a room stereo, your audio playback system and the room in which it’s installed play an all-important role in the correct and accurate tonal and stereo soundstage of the music. It must be high quality, and calibrated and tuned to be accurate. You can’t just pop these recordings into a boom box and expect to hear everything these gems offer.
BRAVO! Kudos and congratulations to the fabulous London Philharmonic Orchestra and their amazing recording team for a brilliant, relevant and completely enjoyable collection. Bravo! Oh, and thanks to iTunes for making it available.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!! Also, be advised that these SAME recordings are available elsewhere in iTunes and 4 times the price!! Buy this collection and receive your money's worth!
r marcus - Josef Krips, elegant, warm and musical; this is my favorite. This Sixth and Ninth are aristocratic. This is humane playing with all expression of the great romantics. Clear wonderful chorus.
R Marcus
Cheese!!!!! - Hours of ListeningAt only ten bucks, your first thought is that it is going to be a cheap worthless recording, but in actuality, they sound amazing!
I love pastoral and the choral!
SomeRandomGuyOnTheInternet - Not So GoodFor an audiophile, this is disappointing. For an audiophile and a classical musician, this is even more disappointing. You can't beat the price, but you also get what you pay for. The performances are mediocre and I believe this was remastered from an album as there are some anomalies in the sound.
BJ_MusicFan - Not up to today's standardsThis may once have been a good set of recordings, but compared to today's offerings, it just don't hold up. Yes, it may be a bargain buy, but that doesn't mean to say it's a good investment. Sound quality is awful - I presume these were converted from LPs. If you want Krips's interpretation from years ago, then fine, but there are far better cycles around.
Vrand Openon - Genius. A Great Recording!I hesitated on buying this album because of the pour recording that other reviews alluded to, and I have to say they could not be more wrong. After some dozen albums from Itunes this is defiantly one of the better ones when comparing quality and any others who say differantly are pure idiotic straight and simple. Putting that all aside the performance is one of the best regarding the nine symphonies that I have ever heard and I have heard and played these symphonies many many times. This is indeed the crown jewel of the LSO. And at ony eight dollars!!! My god don't even think; buy this album!
violin hero - AmazingThis is an incredible deal. These are some of the most celebrated recordings of the Beethoven symphonies, and they are only 10 dollars! My friend has them, and he had to pay much more than this. This is one recording that cannot be passed up!
Dr. J. Christian - Excellent interpretationHave this Collection in vinyl since the mid-seventies. Couldn't find it on CD. Had Solti/Chicago Symphony version on CD and gave it away; just no passion, only technical precision. This version by London Symphony has passion, soul, feeling like no other. This is really a must for any Beethoven collection - excellence in every way.
Camel51 - Sry about the first reviewNever mind I just has to Load the music twice to see all te songs for some reason
Slobo1 - Ninth Symphony variationDoes anyone know of the "practice" version of the 4th movement the Ninth Symphony? It has been called a variation, but I found it over 20 years ago when I was in college, and I haen't come across it since.
maestrowannabe - maestro and orchestrajust wanted to write what a conductor and what an orchestra.not to mention Composer! They have given me constant delight.
saw Previn do a blow the house down Berlioz Le Corsair Overture+ Vaughn Williams, No.2, Abbado
a blow the house down Bartok Miraculous Mandarin and Tchaikovsky 4
and Sir Colin Davis an amazing Scherzo Cap, and Dvorak 8, just amazing. They are some of the
all time best in the business, and God bless Maurice Murphy. I think retired. Best of luck to maestro Gergiev.
They are in amazing hands, even if you don't love him, and I do. Regards.
and am about to purchase the Mahler 7, and I always loved Lenny's,(Bernstein) and Lenny too.
.
Picky Pauly - The benchmark of classical Rock 'n RollThe original headbanging long-haired Heavy metal. The battle and acceptance of doom perfectly brought together hundreds of years before its time. Though I prefer Solti's version with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for it's softer nuances during the interludes this version retains and captures everything that Beethoven must have meant to convey during a very powerful performance.
cornstreehouse - DreadfulDreadful old recordings made when dinosaurs still wandered the earth.
heyrolled - I recommend itI'm not a classical music expert, but this is nice to listen to. I enjoy it.
