- You MUST buy this CD!

I’ve got so many songs that I have three iPods: one for working out (CNN-tamped Nano); 160-gig for movies; and the 80-gig with more than 4,600 songs, ranging from jazz to hip-hop to opera/classical to blues to zydeco to gospel to country to R&B. And I can tell you that there have been few full albums I have downloaded in recent years that are exciting as Raphael Saadiq’s “The Way I See It." Critics have called it inspired by Motown, the Philadelphia and Stax Records sound, and Saadiq doesn’t disappoint those legendary music periods with this throwback jam, which was released in September. Saadiq has enjoyed a topsy-turvy career, first as a front man for Tony! Toni! Toné!, and later the combo group, Lucy Pearl. The guy is incredibly talented, but in this crazy world of commercialized of music, especially with corporate radio, he is the unique artist who really has no place because it’s no longer about artistic genius. My suggestion is that you listen to “Love That Girl.” (My wife can I attest. I listened to the song about 20 times this morning on repeat. Don’t blame me. My dad did the same thing when I was a kid!) I can guarantee you that the infectious jam will lead you to buy or download the full album for the other throwback treats Saadiq offers up on the thrice-Grammy nominated album, “The Way I See It.” It’s time that this guy get his props.

- Amazing

This is an amazing album. Take precaution though... You could end up making a lot of babies to this music.

- Watch it Now!!!

Simply OutStAnDinG!!!! A tremendous blend of melodies and tunes. Reminiscent of classic detroit studio work. Tunes to groove to, croon to, and just be cool with. It's a joy to listen to and share with my 9 year old. She's diggin' it as well. It's rare to find an album today where Most of the tracks are solid and worth listening to more than once.

- Do your thing!

As a fan of that old sound, this is an excellent rebirth/rethinking of this real instrumental rhythm and soul music! Go 'head Raphael, do your thing!!!

- I LOVE THIS ALBUM!!!!!! best of 2008.

this record is so dope. Listening to it just makes you feel good, which is a helluva lot more than I can say about pretty much any other music that's released these days... lush, fun, uplifting, gorgeous, soulful, sassy, heartfelt...love it.

- Fantastic!

I am blown away by this artist. What a wonderful display of 'throw-back' artistry inused with a distinctive new millineum attitude. A must have for anyone who 'feels' the Temps, Tops and similar sounds.

- Carlos Stanfield

See, The Way I See It is that Raphael keeps giving me reason to be proud of him and his music. I'm an old school cat from the 70's and I love this music. Cus I know that in the ghetto, there is a lot of funny stuff going down, but a man got to walk tall. Raphael Saadiq is one to Keep Marchin' onward and forward and so can You! Love, Peace and Soul.

- LOVE IT!!!

This is the best album that he has made!!!!!! I love the smooth jazz like tunes. He sounds a little like Al Green back in the day. I can't get enough of this album!!!!!! Keep up the good work!!!!!

- Raph's nod to 60's music

Great vocals He still on top of his game cop the cd

- The Best album of 2008 in any genre..

Period!

- Great CD! Love It!

Great old-school sound, great lyrics, great sounding voice. I love this CD! My faves are (even though I like every song) are: "Sometimes," "100 Yard Dash", "Just One Kiss," "Staying in Love," and "Calling."

- $7.99???

This album is well worth more than the price of admission and it is a sound that you will not soon forget. It takes you back to the 60's while keeping you in the new millennium. Amazing. Seriously. I had turned away from R&B for a long time because I felt that it wasn't stirring my soul, making me feel the way the greats made you feel when they brought the classics. But, this here is just great, feel good, sit around with your woman, dance a bit, contemplate ... and feel good, good, vibrations. For real.

- Soooo beautiful

What a great album! It shows that if producers and record companies allow it there can be good new music. This is so refreshing, the old style sound and real singing! Can highly recommend!

- An amazing collection of songs!

It's been ages since I've been able to sit down and listen to an entire album without skipping songs. You know what I mean. You buy the album for a few songs, maybe even just one, and the rest is dissapointing. After I heard a few snippets of songs from this album on NPR's Fresh Air, I knew it was worth buying. What really surprised me is that I like the entire album! Not one dud! So, if you're sick of listening to your old Motown albums, give this one a try. I thought I was over the whole genre. I guess I was just sick of the old songs and needed to hear some new stuff.

- Saadiq is not Neo-Soul, but an extension of Real Soul

You can always tell the age of reviewers when they place inaccurate labels on artists. The mid-1960s born Raphael Saadiq is not, and has never been, Neo-Soul. Born smack dab in the middle of the Soul era of the 1960s, Saadiq's past and present work is steeped in the music of his childhood. The opening track "Sure Hope You Mean It" is a throwback to the best compositions Smokey Robinson wrote for Motown's Temptations. "Just One Kiss" brings back the nuances of sexy Soul so emblematic of Stax Label artists Issac Hayes, David Porter, the Emotions, etc. The rump shaking "Let's Take a Walk" brings back vivid memories of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles in their prime. "Never Give You Up" with Stevie Wonder on harmonica has a definitive 1970s feel associated with groups like the Dramatics--when Soul music had matured along with its audience. Saadiq stays true to the Soul genre while bringing a slight New Jack undergirding to the melodies. Perhaps it is fair to say that some of the artists who are labeled as Neo-Soul are receiving more artistic and commercial accolades than they deserve. But Saadiq is not Neo-Soul. Raphael Saadiq is on the younger end of the Soul era--Not a bad place to be, if the contents of this superb CD are any indication of what one could learn by having been born in the 1960s. Buy with confidence!!

- The way I see it

This album has built a bridge that will cross over all the pre packaged garbage that has been spoon fed to us for years now..(I never ate it never listened to it) I'm talking about the ne-yo's and or whatever his name is..and Beyonce too. I hope she finds a good producer, actually I don't know why these people don't call quincy jones? She's hanging on a string with her corporate garbage. The only person who has any kind of vocal ability in this generation of music is Christina Aguillera! Listen to her on Herbie Hancocks album Gershwin.. Alright the point is Raphael Saadiq has arranged a great album here buy it now! I'm not saying we always have to do "old School" music but it is the best sound to build a great foundation for artists with great vocal ability. It encourages artists whatever they know it or not to bring in real arrangers and producers into the studio and: The Magic Word??? CREATE! I feel sorry for these people between 19 and 23 years of age listening to computer produced garbage like the ne-yo's out there and truly believe its great music..

- Old Times

Awesome! Raphael Saadiq really knows how to dig in the past. The music took me back to listening to songs on the record player with my parents. Great Job!

- A Bit Disappointed

I'm a big fan of Raphael Saadiq, and I do appreciate his attempt at a modern take on vintage soul. The trouble that I have with this album is that the use of artifical sound artifacts(the crackling effect used to simulate the old phonograph sound) distracts from the music, and the tracks don't exactly bring anything new to the Soul genre. I'll be picking up the next Saadiq release, but I do wish that I had passed on this one.

- This is the truth!

This album reminds me of summer vacations at my grandparents house in L.A., dominos in the garage, and BBQ on a Saturday! Smooth melodies and a perfect blend of Old School and New School. Preach Brotha Saadiq! Preach! This one is a winner!

- so very cool

this recording is never leaving my rotation. Damn!! So good.

- this is real music

i've heard everyone cd that said it old school..... there arent even close to this cd .....if cd doesnt get 10 grammys i wont that show ever .. the engineer did a great job also all i can say wow

- Radiant and Refreshing...

Smilin' and dancin'...I feel good!!

- Incredible playback

What a great job Raphael ! You brought back the essence of the sixties and seventies. I sure can hear it and as well feel it and picture it. Once again outstanding job.

- An Album That Goes Back To My Time

I saw this cat on Tavis Smiley tonight and had to check out his music. Every tune reminded me of something that came across the vinyl and radio waves in my youth. It's refreshing to hear classic soul interpretations in 2008. You know you are doing it well if Stevie Wonder shows up at 1 am to play harmonica on a track. Mellow, real, smooth and worth having if you really want to hear what R&B should sound like.

- VERY GOOD

This is a really good CD actually. The best song is probably "Love That Girl"

- Truly "Instant Vintage"

Even back in the days of Tony Toni Tone, Raphael Saadiq was displaying his unique voice, passion for great music making and innovative ideas. He continued his groundbreaking ways on his first solo album "Instant Vintage" and carried it even further with his second release, "Ray Ray". Though much of his career has been made up of his work behind the scenes producing hits for many of today's most celebrated artist like John Legend and Joss Stone, his third album is a masterful throughback to the Motown sound, and his voice lends itself beautifully to the music. Though the whole album is terrific, the "must haves" are (in no specific order) "Sure Hope You Mean It", "Never Give You Up", "Love That Girl", "100 Yard Dash", and "Staying In Love". Hopefully, we'll continue to see much more from Raphael....and not just through production, and also, with any luck more artist will take notice and bring back some of that classic sound that Mr. Saadiq has managed to do for us, the listeners, so well.

- easy way to cool

hip jivin' bass lines in the classic philly style; extra whiz with the motown rhythym accompaniments- get your face in the place!!!! snatch this one up quick!

- Never!!

I used to be able to say that I NEVER gave a five-star rating to an album...until listening to this one! I cannot believe this album was made in this generation. Raphael Saadiq brought it back, but with neo soul! This album is 'jammable' from beginning to end...no lie! If you're reluctant to buy this, check out "Never Give You Up", "100 Yard Dash", and "Staying In Love"....I PROMISE you'll want more! This is definitely a feel good album.

- Raphael Saadiz is doing it straight R&B style

Raphael Saadiz is so talented and always comes with freshness, even with doing it old school.

- THE WAY I SEE IT...ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF 2008

FROM START TO FINISH THIS ALBUM WILL TAKE YOU BACK TO A PLACE THAT MAY EITHER BE FAMILAR OR LIKE IN MY CASE A PLACE YOU'VE NEVER BEEN BUT WANT TO GO BACK AND EXPERIENCE. I'VE ONLY HAD THIS ALBUM FOR ABOUT A DAY AND I CAN'T STOP LISTENING TO IT.

- WOW! Throwback at it's best.

I have loved Raphael for a long time, but this by far is his greatest work to date. He has reminded us what being a musician should really be about. Get this album now if you treasure classy music at it's best.

- Finally real R&B

I've always liked Saadiq since back in the day and he's always been different... This album saved R&B for me period. You cant listen to these songs and not feel them. Finally a true eclectic sound with no samples and no hooks, ATTENTION OTHER SO CALLED ARTISTS STEP UP OR GET OUT OF THE GAME.......

- The Way I See It

Glad to see more real old school R&B music making a come back. This CD has all the flavor of the 70's....

- Real R&B Soul

I am really impressed with the way this album captures that motown 60's 70's sound while staying original; this album in my opinion is one of the best R&B Soul records of the year.

- Next 70’s funk

I want to see you bring back each era Mr Saadiq from a fellow Oakland playa I want to hear the 70’s come back I’m working on my 80’s project can’t wait to hear more Must buy this album worth every dime. And for the dude that gave this two stars your a joke he barely uses tambourines.

- wow!

i love it.. my mom loves it.. my kids love it. timeless.

- wow wow wow

this has to be 1 of the best if not the best album i have heard the whole year, i cant stop dancing to these tracks. well done Raphael saadiq. people you gotta have this on your playlist seriously.... love it...

- Spectacular

Fresh & Old (wha?)

- AMAZING!!

This is soul music at it's best! One listen to the opening track and you will be hooked. This album deserves a GRAMMY!

- Winehouse + Duffy = Rapheal Saadiq

so amazing, and beyond soulful!! if you like amy winehouse, or duffy, or even just soul in general check this out!!!

- Where have you been Raphael?

You know it's a great album when everyone in my family, from my 50 yr-old parents to my 18 yr-old little brother, loves it. I can't find anyone with rhythm who doesn't like this masterpiece!

- see also...

If you like this sort of revival, you may be better served by Ryan Shaw's album, This Is Ryan Shaw, on iTunes. Still, it is nice to see artists returning to this style from a more optimistic time.

- Awesome Project

Raphael Saadiq has been given us his soulful sounds for many years now and the man is unstoppable. His latest work is well produced and sounds outstanding. This is one to get a long with Robin Thicke's "Something Else", Nikkole's "Creolepatra" and Alicia Keys' "As I Am. People this is the real thang.

- Great addition to an already large collection

this is a great album that stands out in my musical library. it has a throwback sound with a welcome freshness. The samples provided by iTunes are good representations of the sound and songs (which is not always the case), so feel confident you are getting what you are hearing. i could not recommend this album more highly.

- Fast Eddie

Flat out this is the best throw-back success album I have heard to date...nice work Raphael. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys the Motown, old skool sound.

- Instant classic

This album is amazing... listening to it has almost made me tear... before this album was released he came out saying he wanted to bring it back... sounds like some old school fire! hard to believe it came out this yr if you like old school sexed up motown this album is for you!

- holy crap. just a great album.

listen, let it all sink in. you'll love it.

- A trip to the past with a new-age spin

Awesome album!!! Finally, amongst all the artists out there incorporating old-school Motown/Soul beats and sounds into their music, Saadik leads the pack by infusing his music--at times--with almost exclusively Temptationesque sounds. You can listen to the album over and over and never get sick of it. An instant classic!!!

- Amazing new discovery for me!!

He opened at the John Legend concert last night and I had to find his music! So good and so fun! If you haven't had the chance to see him live - his energy is awesome! Definitely worth listening if you haven't already : D

- Simply Beautiful

I have been a longtime fan of Raphael Saadiq, and I am absolutely in love with this album. It offers something for everyone to enjoy. What a breath of fresh air!
