It's not the original but each deliver a stellar performance. Review based on quality and content not expectations to mimic the legends.
Columbus Short's recording of Little Walter's "My Baby" is jus fabulous; Bravo Columbus Bravo...
I purchased this song because I fell in love with it after hearing her sing it during the first dance. Then when Etta James did the 3 year old act it really pushed me over the edge. She should be honored that someone could sing this song that well.
This is an insult to Etta! Beyonce has no pain or heartbreak in her voice! Hopefully the only good to come out is younger listeners will look up Etta James music and see why the original is the only one who can make you cry and rejoice all at once!
Seeing the movie before hearing the soundtrack generally helps put the emotions behind the songs, but with "Etta" it's all there. Beyonce did a wonderful job of bringing Etta's soul and emotions into these songs. I actually find myself playing just those selections on repeat throughout the day. Everyone did a good job on this soundtrack but Beyonce's renditions on Etta's classics...simply beautiful ...without trying to mimic...in my humble opinion
I loved the movie, the soundtrack is great and I think that Beyonce did a fabulous job. I was pleasantly surprised with Columbus Short, who I loved even before this movie, he was great.
I personally like columbus short's cut of "my babe" but honestly guys, it's just a sound track to a movie. They're not tryin to make a trend out of 1950's music. As far as the the album goes as a soundtrack, they did just fine.
Every one of these actors did a wonderful job in this movie. The big names in pop culture is what attracted the younger crowd, who may not have gone to see it otherwise and introduced them to history they may never knew existed...so while the originals will remain classic, groundbreaking hits that changed the sound of music. The movie remakes are good as well and served their purpose, which was to educated many on the birth of blues, jazz, and rock n' roll and the struggle those artists went through to receive proper credit for their work.
Beyonce and Mos Def portrayed their characters wonderful musically as well as actors.
Beyonce ruined a classic : ( and Michelle Obama's white dress looked terrible she could have looked good but she came out in THAT!!! dissapointed : (
I have been reading some of the reviews for this movie and soundtrack and I have to say that a lot of you have missed the point of both. I think that the actors in this movie who also sang did a great job, its hard to sound like a legend in music. And the whole thing about Beyonce vs. Etta James vs. J. Hud is ridiculous. J. Hud looks nothing like Etta James first off and she would have over sung every song like always. Beyonce has some great curves and a great voice to go along with it and from looking at pictures of Etta James the movie got it right. Beyonce has a lot more control of voice than J. Hud could ever imagine. I also have to say that I enjoyed the movie which you have to see to truly talk about what is going on. Mos Def was great and sound great but he always does. Jeffery Wright who is an amazing actor played is part well to.
It's nice; it's a tribute; it's decent. However, Beyonce's covers of Etta James just sound a little bit too poppish and with not enough soul. It must have been challenging for Beyonce, since Ms. James voice is certainly deeper than hers, but still, she is not the best of the soundtrack. Besides that- Mos Def, Wright, and gang- job well done.
Well I'm normally on the other side of these arguments, I would have to say that Beyoncé covers these songs superbly. While she isn't Etta (and we can all agree on that) I like the quality and tone of her voice more, and I think it better suits the song. Her voice is fuller and rich, while Etta (while still great) is more flat and trebly. I just think that Beyoncé gives this song so much soul that you cannot deny her talent. I think she really put a lot into these covers and that definitely shows.
you guys are being way too hard on beyonce. shes doing an awesome job and her version of the song is great. it doesnt mean that she hates etta and thinks hers is way better, she probably admires her. you need to think of them as two different songs. i actually like beyonces version better, but that doesnt mean im going to put down etta, because she is awesome too.
i think she played the hell out of that part go girl!!!!!!
I just saw the movie on 12/13 and OMG. "I'd rather go blind" is THE SONG! It was the most emotional point of the movie for me. Because you could tell how Etta and Leonard felt for each other...it was awesome..
The characters are completely incorrectly portrayed and the only person who did thier role right to any extent would be little walter played by colombus short i was proud of him he lived up to the blues
Beyonce plays the part of Etta James and the other actresses too. But for all you haters who thinks its not good, how about you trying to sing them songs??? I think the movie was FANTASTIC and it showed the history of these people with talent. THIS MOVIE IS THE BEST!!!!!
I think that this soundtrack is great! Every artist on the album sounds good. Beyonce did a good job too!! I dont think she is trying to be Etta as some people on here think, she added her own way of singing to the classic songs and it sounds great!
I heard Beyonce singing to the new President and his wife during their first dance. It was magical. Perfect song for the occasion, and she did a fantastic job singing it. First thing I did was to look for this song on iTunes, but didn't see the Beyonce version at first. Found the Etta James version, of course, and previewed it, but it just didn't sound the same, however great it was when she sang it. I wanted to hear Beyonce singing to the President. Then I found this one from the movie, that Beyonce sang. That is the one I wanted to listen to, to remind me of that magical moment in time, when this country has a new start. I wish they made a recording of the actualy song she sang at the ball. But this is good enough for me now.
beyonce killed it on the etta james tracks!
I am 31 years old and I love music, and I think most of the greatest music humans will ever make has already been created. I am open minded and hopeful so I do still listen to new artists, I am a big fan Mos Def, probably one of, if not the best hip hop artist ever, but he could not touch Chuck Berry, and I’m sure he would be the first to admit this and I know he is not a singer but this just shows how sharp Chuck Berry is. Some songs like “At Last” and “Somestack Lightnin’” should never be attempted because Eta’s and Wolf’s versions of these songs cannot be topped. This all goes to show you how good these greats were. Just listen to originals Little Walter and Buddy Guy on this album, then listen to everyone else, it's like night and day. I hope this album connects younger people with the original greats. Just try listening to the originals, they have something that these new artist cannot reproduce.
I just saw this movie. It's pretty good and the performers do well both acting and singing, considering they are performing songs by some of our country's greatest musicians. Still, if you like this music, look for albums by the actual artists: Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Etta James, and Chuck Berry. Check out the Chess efforts by Sonny Boy Williamson and Bo Diddley, while you're at it.
okay people, obviously, beyonce wasn't going to be as good as Etta James because the remake is never better than the original, but she did an amazing job. the rest of the songs are great too
Yes, Beyonce could of done much better. However, what about rest of the soundtrack? I feel they did a great job picking the right songs for the movie. This soundtrack is probably the best soundtrack I ever heard in spite of Beyonce. Great music for a great movie.
This CD is great... Beyonce's songs are AMAZING!
Love Beyonce but I'm not a fan of this :(
If you havent seen the movie go see it.. The Soundtrack is great Must Haves: I'm a Man-Jeffrey Wright At Last-Beyonce No Particular Place To Go-Mos Def Once In a Lifetime-Beyonce I'd Rather Go Blind-Beyonce Trust In Me-Beyonce I Can't Be Satisfied- Jeffrey Wright Come On- Mos Def All I Could Do Was Cry-Beyonce
Wow! Beyonce has been a good role model to lots of girl she's a great actress and she is sweet to she can act like anyone she deserves this more than anyone ,and Jennifer Hudson couldn't pull this off in a million years, give Beyonce an emmy. Press yes if you think beyonce pulled etta james off. also if she is so bad at playing etta james why is the songs sung by beyonce the most popular in this album. answer that those of you who don't like beyonce .if your going to trash a great singer get your facts straight. don't listen to the people who gave it ones because they were mad about one thing.
Just a heads up, Etta released her version of "At Last" in 1961, and it became her signature song. However she is by far NOT the original artist. The song was written by Harry Warren and Mack Gordon in 1942 for the film "Orchestra Wives" and the original artist was the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Harry and Mack had two other songs in that film that were both nominated for Oscars. Now you know.
The talent chosen for this film, in terms of acting AND AS MUSICIANS is by far the BEST they could've chosen. People who are Etta James fans (if they live with the world) will find this to be a remarkable tribute. I AM a musician, and I did NOT use to be a Beyoncé fan. SHE ROCKS. People often just prefer originals because of nostalgia and because they just love dwelling in the past and what they know. That DOESN NOT take away from Ms. Beyoncé, who in my opinion, has certainly proved she's not just one more music industry "biz" trick. She is a true, genuine talent. And so is everyone in this film and album.
Beyonce is one of the few singers out there who can do a respectful, yet unique cover. She keeps just enough of the song the same and yet makes it her own. Did you see her at the Kennedy Center Honors? She sang a Streisand song so beautifully it looked like Barbara was going to cry. I love Etta James, have loved her since I started listening in college. I wouldn't trust anyone else to portray her - and I haven't even seen the movie yet.
Having seen the movie and listened to these songs, I think a lot of the reviewers missed the boat. This is a soundtrack from a movie made about an historical record company in a certain place and time. It was not meant to be a tribute album. Although I prefer "the best of Etta James", I think in this context the artists did a fine job, incuding Ms. Knowles. If you want the real thing -- I'm sure it's somewhere in itunes.
really, i think the movie and music is amazing. you cant deny it. no matter how much you want too. its no longer a matter of opinion. its a statement, that this cd, and movie is outstandingly amazing.
I think beyonce is getting a bit more trash talked than she deserves here, I thought she was pretty good on at last though the others weren't that good. Kim Wilson sounds extraordinary on harmonica, as he allways does.
Great vocals and instrumentals!! But it did not quite resemble Etna the way I remember her.
Just go to "The Best of Chess Records" to find all of these songs by the original artists. Why waste your money on bad renditions of classic songs. Beyonce is no Etta James, Mos Def is not even a singer, let's not forget rap is not singing. Jeffrey Wright is good actor, but don't ask him to sing. Think about it there was a reason why they would not let Jamie Foxx sing on the "Ray" soundtrack, you cannot reproduce perfection.
Beyoncé is a good singer stepping in the shoes of a great singer. Etta's control and passion do not come across in this recording. So what you get is the essense but not the heart of the song. Listen to each version back to back of "At last" and you'll start to understand. It is great however, that this opportunity to be a witness to this era in music history is available. Now maybe some new "artists" will be inspired to write some songs with lyrics that speak to the heart & soul not just the body parts.
She is talented and I never would have picked At Last for her to sing but once I heard it, she did a great job! She said that Etta put so much heart and soul into her music that it made her want to be a better artist. Very becoming of her. :)
Instead of getting someone who can actually sing (like Alicia Keys), they got Beyonce to be Etta James. Beyonce isn't worthy of bringing Etta James a glass a water, let alone singing her songs. The rest of the soundtrack is decent, but I give it one star based on that mistake alone. It's a HUGE mistake. Etta James has more talent, soul and heart in her shoes that Beyonce has in her whole body.
As soon as I saw the movie preview, I thought "Man, there better not be any singing in this movie, Or Beyonce's gonna be screwed." I can't stand modern singers, 'cause they can't do anything except their own stuff. Find someone who has some friggin' artistic flexibility if you're gonna cast them as an influential individual in musical history.
I don't know if I'm watching the same movie that other people are watching. I watched the movie, and I loved it. Beyonce made me cry. During the end when she sang "I'd Rather Go Blind" it made me become emotional.
Every body who is hatin on anybody in this movie needs to get over themselves i thought the movie was great and they all did a great job playing the roles of these great artists!
I personally don't think Beyonce did a good job singing Etta's songs. She has that distinct "Beyonce" voice and you imediately know it's her. Etta James is a ledgend.
This is the best...The Originals are also awesome too! I mean Columbus Short as Little Walter is magic..My Babe is the Bomb! Anything Beyonce/Etta James is Great! Personally my Top five is 1.My Babe 2.At Last 3.Trust in Me 4.I'd Rather Go Blind 5.I Can't Be Satisfied!!! This is Awesome so go buy it. The only problem is people for the classics listening to the remakes. I wish itunes would combine all of these cds into one!!!!!! Buy it!!!!!
For all you people saying that this soundtrack is horrible...What are you thinking? The meaning of this cd is to commemorate the artist that the actors are portraying. Even better, they are singing the songs themselves. And for the people saying that "it doesn't sound like the original." It's not supposed to. I personally was shocked at Columbus Shorts immitation of Little Walter. He sounded the most like his character, Job well done! Overall this is an excellent buy.
... is making me wince. His songs are painful on this record...painful.
I loved it! Simple as that. The movie was a great tribute to the past and all the artists involved nailed it. How could you say Beyonce does not have the passion of Etta....watch the movie and then say that. I do feel Etta not Beyonce deserved the opportunity to sing for our first black president as it would have been more significant considering all she has gone through to get where she is today.
When I first heard Beyonce was portraying Etta James in a movie, I wanted to cry. I am an avid Etta James fan, and Beyonce totally destroyed her songs. Though I like Beyonce as a pop singer, she DOES NOT have the chops to sing Etta’s music. I can't sit through this CD without getting upset.
Everyone is judging the soundtrack in the wrong way just because beyonce sings on it. So what? She did a good job portraying Etta James. So did the rest of the cast. But you all are judging HER not the soundtrack. So stop it. I loved the movie and I love the soundtrack. That's why it gets a five-star rating.
