This is their best studio album by far; crash is the only other one that comes close. I like DMB much better live, but this is one of his studio albums i will listen to. All the songs are very different. Everyone likes Crush, and Don't Drink the Water is one of my favorites by him in general. Don't skip on Pig or the Last Stop, two very different, and excellent, songs by him
This is without a doubt DMB's best released album as of yet. PnP >> Rapunzel is a great opening track, And Spoon with Last Stop Reprise is priceless. I'd Highly Recommend the purchase of this album.
A flawless album from top to bottom, Before These Crowded Streets is truly DMB's finest work. From the joyful opening chords of Pantala Naga Pama through the reflective, mysterious Spoon, BTCS is a brilliant showcase of the Dave Matthews Band's talent, as well has Dave's finest songwriting and lyrics. It is a must listen for anyone.
After (much long overdue) commercial success from the 1996 release of 'Crash', DMB somehow found studio time between their hectic touring schedule to produce this magnificent album. Never conforming to any certain genre or style you can find many emotions present on this masterpiece. Starting out with the very enlightening song Rapunzel and then getting right into something more vengeful with Don't Drink the Water, this album will take you for a very passionate ride. At some point you will begin to find yourself asking if you've been missing something. Well you have and now you've just found it. Enjoy.
I'm a huge DMB fan, and in being so you could say i'm quite astute on their recorded work. (I think I can name every song on every studio album in order) and if you take it from anybody, take it from me that Before These Crowded Streets is not only one of the best, but THE best of all those recorded works. This album is when the Dave Matthews Band pushed themselves from another good 90's rock band to the apple of their fan's eye. It built the fan base that they carry to this day, and if they had missed this one I daresay they would not sell nearly as many tickets as they do to this day, 11 years later. From start to finish this album exemplifies the Dave Matthews Band's style, relying on improvisation over conformity and switching tones, moods and influences in the beat of a drum. Rapunzel and Stay are swirling tapestries of sax, violin, keyboard and playful, uncompromising lyrics, The Last Stop and Don't Drink the Water are emotional takes on the the ugliness of tyranny and oppression, The brooding Halloween and the enthralling The Stone are about the misery love inevitably brings, Crush is the true love song of the album (as is number 8 on UtTaD, Crash and Everyday) and one of the prettiest Matthew's ever wrote, and then the true gold of the album comes. The last 3 songs are collectively some of the best work ever recorded. Pig's chorus and hook will make anyone dance and sing along with it, and The Dreaming Tree and Spoon are amazing and incomparable meditations on the doldrums of depression and looking back on spent time. Spoon alone, with the involvement of Alanis Morisette's wailing sincerity and Bella Fleck's banjo together with a series of fantastic bridges and an incredibly powerful outro to the main song is enough to separate this from the pack, and the two together on the same album push Before These Crowded Streets into the promised land of 90's music. Busted Stuff was a welcome return to the style this album put the spotlight on, but the other 2 albums the band has released since then, Everyday and Stand Up haven't quite captured the majesty of BTCS.
Before These Crowded Streets is a dark, rich blend of musical genius that shows the Dave Matthews Band at the height of their powers. The instrument work is stunning, with numerous different sounds -- adding banjos, electric guitars, horns and strings -- to compliment the work of Matthews, Beauford, Lessard, Tinsely and Moore. The result is a sound that is, at the same time, worldly and familiar with a certain timeless quality to it. Its a testament to the work of all involved that now, some 10 years after its initial release, the album still sounds as fresh and relevant as it did the day it was released. The strength of all the tracks -- from the radio-spun "Crush" to the ethereal "Dreaming Tree" -- helps allow the disc to be listened to with no skipping, as it was clearly intended. Musical interludes and reprises are scattered throughout the album as well, highlighting the idea that this was a carefully crafted album. Even if you aren't a fan of the Dave Matthews Band, this is one album that is simply a must-own.
After listening to the first two albums from DMB I was excited to get this one. It didn't disappoint me one bit. It's one of the few albums that I own that I can listen to from beginning to end and back again :) I especially love Crush...that bass line, oh that sweet bass line...it's one of my favorite songs on this album. Dave's guitar playing is melodic as it is chordal all at once. It definitely speaks throughout the whole album. I am a hardcore DMB fan and I will say that this was their best album ever!

This without a doubt one of the best albums ever. If you have any doubts about Dave Matthews read the lyrics and listen to this album. Rapunzel - amazing, upbeat and just plain sass. i've never heard another song like it The Last Stop - incredibly dark and passionate, this song defines an epic struggle between war and peace Don't Drink the Water - a classic. Stay - a great change of pace. so upbeat and makes you genuinly happy Halloween - once again, so much rage. such great violin work The Stone - Boyd at his best. the violins are so incredible (last minute) Crush - plain sexy. you can't hate that bass line The Dreaming Tree - best lyrical song of the band. written about Stefan's daughter. absolutely incredible Pig - really optimistic. uplifting. great song. Spoon - great album ender. This album deserves more than five. click yes if you agree. arguably one of the most underrated and greatest albums ever made.
Can't say much other than this is a truly awsome DMB album but for Newcomers you should first try "Crush" and then listen to the other songs as their melodies will float right into you and touch you by the heart and soul!! :^D
I would not reccomend this for someone new to DMB. However, Dave's finest and deepest lyrics can be found here. Nearly flawless musically. Overall, my favorite album of all time.
For those new to the DMB world. This is it. This album sums up DMB. In my opinion THIS is when they were at their absolute finest. This album knocked the Titanic soundtrack off the billboard #1. In the end I think this will be considered the opus of the Dave Matthews Band.
