- *Brilliant-Pure-Original*

Mat Kearney does a great job on his second album!! Worth every single penny. There is a song on this CD for everyone to fall in love. I really like Fire & Rain, Annie, and All I Have. His voice is one of a kind!!!

- Kearney's follow-up is a masterpiece for those that love life, and all it has to offer.

I know most of you who love the brilliant debut of Kearney's "Nothing Left To Loose" are thinking where is the lyrical flow and rap that set him apart from other singer/songwriters? Well, I believe this is a step in the right direction and he'll get back to those roots soon again, but this album is a great bridge to what's to follow. I think Mat needed to put out this album to show the world he's not a singer/songwriter/rapper... but a true storyteller of all those feelings we all feel as human beings. We live, We Love, We Die. Life is what you make it, and I like to make it while listening to Mat Kearney...I hope you do too.

- amazing!

o my gosh! closer to love is such an amazing song! his first album was okay seeing as it had the rap stuff, but this one is so much more contempory! awesome. definetely one to buy!

- Amazing Record, ever better than the last one!

This album is full of fantastic songs, especially "On & On". Buy it now!

- He is amazing!

Mat Kearney has made such an amazing album. I love "Here We Go" especially the acoustic version. so good!!

- Not ONE bad song!

This album is WONDERFUL! There is one one "bad" song on this album. Mat Kearney's voice is amazing...smooth, sultry, lulling, almost dream-like, mesmerizing. It is rare that one album is good from start to finish, but this one certainly is. It is a MUST have.

- excellence

This album is great! Let me silence all those people who thought Mat Kearney couldn't make a great album without his spoken word. Kearney has the ability to write beautiful songs even without a whole lot of garbage thrown in. As a matter of fact, I think he has expanded his horizons as a musician. He involved much more syncopation, which is a huge step forward for him. Many of his past songs involved straight rhythms that seemed flat and just carried the songs along. I'm glad he involved the instruments more in his songs. He also used a slightly better vocabulary (though it still needs improvement) and got his points across very well. I'm also glad he dropped the spoken word. It allowed him to be more direct, and he still seemed to employ the same amount of creativity. Plus now he knows he no longer has to rely on the spoken word to make his songs great. Favorite songs: Here We Go, Lifeline, New York to California

- Disappointing

This album was a disappointment! I loved Kearney's spoken word/rap vibe that he mixed into his last album. It was exactly what made him different than every other male singer. Yes, he has a nice voice, but without the individual style he incorporated into the last album he is just like everybody else. Overall, really bummed with this album. It is not worth the money.

- Great Album

Get this album. Its even better than his first!

- great

Mat kearney's songs are always so beautiful I just wish more people got to listen to him. He is great

- It's ok...

The reason I loved his music was for his unique style, not just because he was another good artist out there. I really miss his hip/hop mixed in with the pop sound. I was expecting some more of the good stuff like his first album but I am disappointed in this one.

- Amazing!

Mat Kearney is a genius and this album is amazing!

- perfect

He is a true artist when he feels it he goes for it and he accomplishes greatness on this album good flow throughout a album that you can just sit and listen to for hours with a nice chill feel to it. Yeah his older stuff had a different vibe to it but this is alot better then the mainstream crap that is played on the radio over and over again.

- Welp... dang.

I won't lie, I loved Mat for his rap. The complete absence of it in this CD kills my soul. Plus, I'm not a big pop fan. Now, I'm all for artists going their own direction and if this more poppy style was Mat's decision, I say he should go for it! ...but I can't come along for the ride. The two stars is more because I was expecting something flavorful, but all I got was vanilla. Very good vanilla, but it's not what I was in the mood for when I bought it...

- songreview

kk, mat kearney has kinda left his old rap-in-the-song style, buit this is not BAD. its just not rememberable (if thats a word), well some of them are remeberable, but some are generic 1. All I Have (3.5/5)- This song is kinda catchy, but it is kindof boring to me. There are some good parts, but collectively its a so-so song. 2. Fire & Rain (100/5)- OMFG OMFG IF YOU BUY A SONG BUY THIS ONE!!!!!! by far one of my favorites. 3. Closer to Love (4/5)- i liked it on the single but here i skip it everytime it comes on. Good song, though. 4. Here We Go (5/5)- I like this one. Catchy in the chorus and nice beat. 5. Lifeline (5/5)- Nice slow song. i love the chorus, and is reely a good chill song. 6. New York to California (4.5/5)- Good song, except the slow progression fades towards the end. I expected a huge crescendo, like in Lifeline, but there was just a decresendo, and the end. Good song, though. 7. Runaway Car (5/5)- GREAT CHORUS! catchy and nice, good beat, upbeat song. 8. Never Be Ready (5/5)- this song is not about the song (that nmakes no sense lol) it is about the words. The song itself is not amazing but i love the lyrics. 9. Annie (3/5)- Not great. Ok guitar and beat (if there is one) not rememberable to me. 10. Straight Away (4/5)- Ok song, the part where he says, You can shoot me straight away, is reeely extended and doesnt folo the beat. (Is it me, or does mat always say, Coming out of the grey? 2nd line of Closer to Love) 11. On & On (4/5)- I like this song because it is chill and relaxin. But i think that the overusage of the stringnoise when u move ur hands up and down a guitar is just irritating 12. City of Black & White (100/5)- THIS SONG IS LIKE FIRE AND RAIN- BUY IT! its calming and relaxing with awesome lyrics and steady beats. I like how at the end, he resays the chorus, and it just adds to the power and feeling that make up the impact of the song (i ramble =D) Album= 96% Theres some great songs like Runaway Car, Fire and Rain, CIty of Black and White, Here We Go, Lifeline and Never Be Ready= these are my buyable sugegstions there is some trash in this ablum but barely so, making it a great album. I give it an A GOOD WORK MAT! (one question- kearney pronounced Car-knee or Kee-ear-knee?)

- Undeniably NOT MAT!!!

After loving every minute of Mat's first album, I've anxiously awaited this release ever since I heard he was back in studio. Having given this album a full 2 weeks worth of listening, I'm really let down by this release. It's put together flawlessly, but to me it's missing everything that made his first album so special. It's not often these days that you find an artist that stands apart from the crowd because of their incredibly unique talents. Mat's first album did just that. I really feel like he's left out of this album what made him so special, the seemless mixture of lyrical hip-hop genius with perfect melodies. I miss that so much listening to this album. I want to like it, but it's just not him. There is nothing unique about this album. I really hope he decides to return to his strenghs in the future.

- Not Bad, But Not Great.

The spoken word/rap element is gone, and unfortunately, that was where most of the creativity and originality was in Mat's previous albums. It was unique. Now the songs aren't bad, but on first listen, there weren't any really stand-out tracks that made me what to keep listening. Somewhat disappointing, because I've really enjoyed his other albums. He's got a great voice, and combining hip-hop and acoustic music was a creative combo. I recommend the older albums over this one, though this one definitely is well-produced and isn't BAD at all. It just doesn't really do much to stand out.

- Growing on me, however slightly disappointed.....

I have to agree with many of the reviews already posted. This album is okay, but leaves me feeling a little empty. Mat's first 2 cds were indredible (especially Bullet) because they were a unique mix of rap verses and acoustic choruses, something no one else was doing. Also, the lyrics and depth of his past songs really captured his love for Christ! (Ex: Trainwreck, Poor Boy; make sure to hunt down "Memorial Stones," on a EP b4 Bullet and you will really see what I mean) However, on this new cd, all the songs seem to be mainstream, surfacey, and lack spiritual depth (all about guy/ girl relationships). The songs sound very similar to each other, and the rap is completely absent. This album is slowly growing on me and is good music to chill to, but I miss the REAL creative genius of the "Bullet" Mat Kearney who was not afraid to be bold!

- Flawless and Beautiful

need i say more? This record is brilliant!

- Mat does it again!!

once again Mat Kearney blows us all away! At first, I wasn't looking forward to City of Black & White, I thought for sure it would be a repeat of his first album, Nothing Left to Lose. But Mat's orignial sound and passionate lyrics have gone above and beyond my expectations. "City of Black & White" is my personal favorite track, but the whole album is absolutely outstanding!!

- New summer favorite

It's good to see Mat back with such a great follow-up to one of my favorite albums of the last two years. This new work has every track leaving you feeling, happy, melancholy, upbeat, but mellow all at the same time. It's well worth the money. Buy it.

- Best yet

compared to his other albums this is more fast paced pop, which is good in this sense. with new beats and melow vocals, along with a steady set of guitars I would definitely suggest buying his best album yet.

- Artistic Evolution At Its Best

I first listened to Mat Kearney back in February 2006, and immediately climbed aboard because I knew he was a talented artist with longevity and creative depth. The profound power of his lyrical style that was revealed in his debut 'Nothing Left To Lose' album returns to the audience shore more powerfully in this album, with even more thought-provoking lyrics and catchy hooks. Both 'Closer To Love' and 'City of Black & White' reveal his stronger and smoother vocal range; while 'Here We Go' combines his lyrical style with a rhythmic, mellow rock beat that is new but also telling of how comfortable he is with his newly forged artistic path. This comfort is evident throughout the entire album; it is more fluid than 'Nothing Left To Lose,' but doesn't clip away the moving and emotional simplicity he is known for. The three singles mentioned above highlight Mr. Kearney's newly achieved comfort zone - if you don't believe me just give them a listen.

- IT ROCKS!!

Every song is great and a little different. Buy it, simple.

- Breakout Album

Wonderful breakout album from an outstanding singer. Loved the title track and Fire & Rain. Lyrically and musically sound. Worth every penny. Can't wait to see him in concert.

- come on mat...

I am severely disappointed. His rapping style in his first 2 cds is flawless. Its smooth, well written and extremely powerful. Not ONCE does he rap on this album. All the passion and raw lyrics from the first two cds is completely gone. Come on mat... I really expected more.

- 100 stars

This is one of the best albums I've bought in years! Mat Kearney just keeps getting better and this album is pure emotions and great beats to go with it. Mat nailed it on this album and I can promise complete enjoyment if you get this and it shouldn't be missed! I'm so glad he came along...I'm so glad this album came along.

- Alright

Mat's an excellent writer but this album makes me sleepy. I miss his hip-hop/spoken word edge. I'll give it a shot although after the first listen I prefer his previous record much more.

- Better than ever!!

I first hear about Mat Kearney on VH1 when his first album came out, and i loved him! His first album, Nothing Left to Loser, was great, but this album is 100 times better!! Buy this album!!

- A Great Second Album!

Mat Kearney is truly brilliant. His lyrics are meaningful, and every single song is catchy. He reminds me a lot of Coldplay, Gavin Degraw, and Brandon Heath. His voice is reminiscent to Chris Martin. When i listen to this album, i dont have to skip a track. Every song is amazingly crafted and sounds awesome. Some highlights are: Here We Go, Fire & Rain, Closer to Love, Straight Away, On & On, and City Of Black and White. I strongly recommend you to buy this whole album. You will not be disappointed.

- FANTASITC~~~

Ive been a Mat fan from the beggining, and this is his best album yet! ( well, the last one was amazing too ) Songs like Never be ready really hit me. This is just a fantastic album, I love it, I pre-ordered it and got a signed photo of him!

- The Good Stuff

Mat Kearney is the quintessential artist, having provided now two listen-on-repeat albums. Though this new album differs from his first album (which was more rap/song), it stands on its own with soul-filled melodies that all manage to feel like waking up on a Saturday morning or watching a sunrise. I am continually blessed by the way he interweaves the experience of living with incredible musicianship. Thanks Mat, for giving us songs for the journey.

- Where'd Mat Go?!

This album was a huge disappointment. This isn't the same Mat Kearney from the past two albums. Where's the rap, slow acoustics, and meaningful lyrics? This is like a pop album. All I Have and Closer to Love are good songs, though they're still not like the Mat of the past. COME BACK!

- City Black and White

Good second album since nothing will replace the first. Thought I was listening to Coldplay (before their last crappy album) in a couple of songs. Keep 'em coming, Mat.

- Profound, inspiring, entertaining

A wonderful, well written and profound album. Definitely Mat Kearney but so very different from "Nothing Left to Lose." "Closer to Love" is one of the best songs I've heard in years. Won't be surprised to see it top the charts. Enjoy!

- Lost his orginality

I think this album is ok, the sounds of each song make them sound too much alike. The problem with this album is that Mat has lost his originality, I loved the spoken word aspect of his music, it makes him unique. This album is a bit monotonous because the tempo is pretty much the same on each track and there is not much to break up the tracks like his previous songs that used the spoken word. I wonder if he chose not to do the spoken word because some people critisized him for it, but then again those people are probably the same ones who don't like things to be overly creative.

- undeniably amazing

This entire cd is unreral.I honestly do not understand why he doesn't get more publicity. For some reason artists like Mat Kearney, lifehouse, jon mclaughlin, parachute, dashboard confessional, and others like them just don't get the deserved respect. You should totally buy this album.

- Quality issues.

I think this is a great album from Mat. I was wondering if anyone else was having quality issues with the download. Playing it back it gets real soft and then real loud. Is this my ipod? Or is it the download?

- love it.

i love this album. although it is different from the last album, i still love it. my favorite songs from Nothing Left to Lose were his ballads and am so pleased that this cd is only that-you can really feel the emotion put into these songs. im really pleased with this cd and it is already one of my favorites-id recommend it to anyone.

- Nothing Left to Record??

I loved Matt's first album and have been looknig forward to this for some time... but after listenting to it, it sounds just like the tracks on Nothing Left to Lose where he DOESNT rap. Its like he just re-wrote a bunch of songs. What a dissapointment.

- Unsatisfied

Ok, Mat. We need to talk. "City" is...fine. There are some nice choruses, some lovely lyrics, and your usual mellow and highly listenable voice. But unfortunately it's forgettable. The problem might be this: You set the bar for yourself incredibly high with your last album which was...and I don't use this word often...brilliant. The combination of your vocals, the meaningful lyrics, the memorable tunes, and the RAP/SPOKEN WORD was unique, surprising, edgy...and brilliant. So what happened? I know many us are really really curious. There are so many albums out there with nice vocals and catchy melodies...so your latest addition is going to be lost in the crowd. Why did you do away with the rap/spoken word? What were you thinking? It's like spaghetti. Your last album served us up a delicious plate of spaghetti and red spicy sauce. This album is like the noodles without the sauce - edible, maybe even filling on one level...but boring and forgettable. (Eating the sauce by itself would have been too spicy...too much...like most rap albums.) As I listened to "City" I actually got sadder and sadder with each song - I was waiting for the edge, the surprise, that amazing combination of rap and melody that took my breath away last time. Upon a third and fourth listen I've begun to appreciate several of the songs - many are actually quite good - but here's my fear for you, Mat: Another album like this one, and people will stop listening (buying). One meal of plain ol' spaghetti noodles is fine...but I'm not ordering it twice.

- Awesome

I've been a fan of Mat's since I first heard him sing. This release showcases the maturity of his music.

- AMAZING!

Totally loving the new album! Different from the last, but the jams are amazing and I find myself listening to the entire album over and over! Keep it up Mat!

- More singing is good

While I appreciate the rap heard on his last album, this guy has such an incredibly beautiful melodic voice that it's nice to hear more of it. :)

- Great Deviation

Not much like his first two albums, he left most of the rap influence behind with those two. The album sounds much bigger and fuller than his previous two. Great job, shows he is not limited in his style.

- Great Album, CDs sold out at the Tower Theater

thank you Mat for an amazing show opening for Keane tonight at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby (Philly) PA. I didn't make it down to get a cd, they sold out to quickly!! Going to buy it online now!!

- Awesome

buy this its so good.

- abandoned

his first album, "bullet," was amazing, revolutionary to me. it featured a new and original energy with its rough, artistic mix making good use of its less-than-techie-savvy production. it was a truly special record. when it was recycled into "nothing left to lose," i was thankful for the remixes, and even the newer songs, but i felt the soul of "bullet" was tampered with. now, "city" features an entirely different artist than the one who recorded "bullet." the energy is missing on "city," as well as the unique style of rap and melodies found on "bullet." "bullet" was new, invigorating, raw. "nothing" was molded into a commercial record, and "city" is a complete abandonment. most fans will not be happy with this new endeavor, even though the songs are good, and his lyrics are spot-on, it is an album that will get lost in a collection sooner than later. mine already has, and that is very, very unfortunate. here's hoping for a solid return back to his original vibe with the next record.

- White Bread

First, I will openly admit that I'm very picky in my music, so if you love everything on you local top-40 station, you can ignore most of what I say. I imagine this album was created to make Mat Kearney a little more mainstream; frankly, soft rock-rap is a fairly small niche, but he filled it spectacularly in Nothing Left to Lose. To me, these songs seem to have far less soul and deal with more superficial topics. While this is a good album, I'm fairly sure it will be forgotten quickly.

- this is a really beautiful album

i don't know much about mat kearney, but this album is really sweet to listen to.it's just the kind of melodic with meaningful lyrics record i've been wanting to hear.high five mat kearney!
